WiFi Connecting... but never does, also missing MAC address - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've ran into a very odd problem on a Nexus 5 I picked up off CL today. It appeared to be working when I purchased it, but didn't test WiFi. I got home, loaded up the stock Androiid ROM fom their webpage and now bluetooth and wifi appear to be dead. WiFi always just says connecting but never finds anything. The MAC address on it is also 'unknown'. I followed these steps:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52441901&postcount=47
but WiFi is still dead on here I also downgraded the ROM from 5.1.1 to KitKat, just to see if that yielded any results. Anybody have a couple of ideas on what I might be doing wrong?

[Q] wifi problems

im having trouble connecting to wifi. my phone just hangs at obtaining ip address and then eventually fails. ive tried with many different wifi connections not just mine. all the same. Anyone else having this problem?
Yes same problem here.
It seems a general problem like the GPS.
I found out that depending of the router brand it works better (for example, no problem with a linksys).
To go arround the problem you can try this:
- go in flight mode
- activate wifi
- when you have a wifi connection (test with to browser) reactivate the phone
I hope it helps

Bring the phone back, and get a replacement. I have had no such problems with my Captivate.
I do notice that the WiFi signal isn't as strong as on my iphone's in the same area of the house though.

[Q] Samsung galaxy i9000 won't connect to wireless any more

Hi all,
I have a Galaxy i9000 and it won't connect to wireless. It used to connect just fine, then one day it stopped working. I ignored it for a while (3G still works) and once I finally got around to trying to see what had happened, I could see that the phone does connect to wireless networks (at home and at work), but once it had authenticated to the network, it would fail at "Obtaining IP address from <network name>". There's no error message, but the phone just sits at that stage forever. Not obtaining an IP address makes it pretty hard to connect to a wireless network
I don't know what happened to make this problem occur, it's been about a month now since it happened. I have AdFree installed on the phone, that writes to the hosts file, right? I suspect that it may have been a hosts file update which had caused this problem, but I'm not sure.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what may have caused the problem?
Thanks!
what about reflashing your phone?
so you have everything stock
if this doesn't solve the problem then contact a service, or if you have warranty, just send it back...
same problem
The funny thing is is have exactly the SAME PROBLEM ... SINCE the same time?!?!
mybe we got some kind of virus for phones? ... altho i do have anti viral software on the phone. and i didnt upload any kind of stuff on it for at least half a year.

try resetting your phone to factory default
I am also experiencing similar wifi issue..except I get pass obtaining ip address it's after that I get error message "authenticate problem".??
My brothers works fine connects within second on home wifi, when I connect on same wifi I get error message..I have tried restoring previous wifi data..I have done phone reset too but nothing works
I did some googling and found brief answers not that helpful..but it was mentioned that frequency range I'm trying to connect is incorrect.
"does anyone know how to change wifi frequency mgh our any help"
question

One S on Orange - Wifi issues after 4.0.4 update

So wifes phone got the update a few days ago, since then the phone struggles to connect to the home wifi, was fine before the update. Once connected it's fine but if you go out and come back you either need to bounce the router or the phone to get it to connect. Anyone seen anything similar?
Mine came back from HTC repair last week to cure the home button bug. They have upgraded the firmware to 404 and since then, connection to my router is ok, but I have a Huawei ws320 repeater for use in the bedroom, and the phone can only hold a connection to that for about a minute before it drops. The connection status is "obtaining IP address" which it never seems to do. Wasn't a problem on 4.0.3. Another problem for me since the update is dropping connection to my Bluetooth car hands free...
Sorry I can't solve your problem but if anybody out there has any guesses....!
also having the same problem after 4.0.4. update
i am also having this issue, befor the update wifi at home worked just fine and after update it just says obtaining ip adress this phone has had so many issues im starting to think it was a bad idea. please if anyone has any info tell me. thanx in advance

stack "Wifi turning on"- Problem updated

Hey,
I have a problem after updating my (tab 2 Wifi-3G 10.1) to Android 4.2.1. the tablet was working so well while and after updating, but after that I wake up and I had anoyning problem. the problem is when I click on the setting and try to turn on the wifi it shows only (turning wifi on...) and nothing happening. it feels like the wifi cannot start or establish the connenction, therefore no available wifi routers or Hotspots can be listed.
What happened the last two days, I tried to check if the tablet will work again after 2 weeks no charge and drain all the battery, SO IT REALLY WORKED BUT ONLY FOR 5 MIN and the problem came back again.
I downgrade to Android 4.0.4, tried fix apps like "FIX MY WIFI" it says (cannot enable the Wifi -unknown issue), also download the patch file " wpa_supplicant" and changed the wifi setting for standby policy to (allways on), all these steps did not really helped or fixed this problem.
XDA and google didnt really gave me the good answer and there are many android tablets with similer problem.
I hope someone knows about this problem and could share the solution
I just received two Galaxy Tab 2 (P3113) tablets and I am experiencing a similar sounding issue as you. I personally own one already so I am able to check on certain parameters to see where exactly it is failing. What I have found is this:
On my good working GTab I can see my WiFi mac address even when it's turned off (the WiFi mac address is 1 digit higher than BT). On the two I recently received both display the mac address as "Unavailable". Can you check yours to see if you even have a mac address? Goto settings, about tablet, status or under WiFi goto advanced and see if it is displayed.
Once upon a time I had a Sprint Galaxy Nexus and I had an issue with randomizing mac address on reboot. I was able to pull a partition called param, Hex edit it so it could retain the real mac address and then flashed it back. This hardware is slightly different and I am not expert on how to do this but maybe someone on here will have an idea on how to do this.
There's always the possibility that the WiFi chip is just dead. I'm gonna keep looking for a solution and if I find one I'll pass it on to you.

Install cwm recovery then try to wipe cache and dalvik cache, after that download latest firmware from sammobile.com then flash it via odin.

WiFi Connection Failure

Hi.
I only have one wifi network around atm. My N5 was working fine with it, and yesterday it started disconnecting from it.
Right now, when I try to connect, it connects for 3 or 4 seconds (it gets an IP address and actually connects to the Internet) before jumping back to data connection. When entering the Wireless menu on my phone it says "WiFi Connection Failure".
I thought I might have tweaked something I shouldn't (since also yesterday I installed Franco kernel and App Ops), so I went back to stock (using the Nexus Toolkit) and in the process I updated to the newest 5.1 release (I had LMY47D version and upgraded to LMY47I).
It didn't help. I also tried changing the router channel and security type to no avail.
Of course, I also tried to turn airplane mode on/off and forgetting network. And I just downgraded to LMY47D to see if that was the problem. But it didn't fix it.
I'm attaching the logcat. I hope I did it properly.
Any suggestions? Thanks!
UPDATE: I noticed it works in Safe Mode. I'll try to find which app is causing it.
I'm having exactly the same problem.
Updated to 5.1, after a run with Nike+ and Runkeeper, with GPS and Cellular Data on, battery drained and phone switched off. After a recharge, this problem emerged, different ROMs, different stock versions, different kernels. Nothing seems to make wi-fi work again.
