general overall color and rom questions - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hay all,
I have several questions/issues that i am hoping someone can help with and or point me to the location for the proper help.
First,
original boost mobile galaxy s5, running 4.4 Rom
Flashed OA6 using ODIN to put 5.0 on
flashed CF/root using ODIN to gain root
flashed Philz recovery
At this stage i have a completely stock rom with root access.
Second i dl several custom roms to try including cryogen, metal rom, and unadulterated. I had the same issues with all of them as follows,
*no data when leaving an area where phone is on wifi
*cannot move apps to sd card
*no voice mail notifications
*gps not working
*phone reads lte but no lte speeds
I did a full wipe of cashe/divlsk cashe (however is spelled) and format for new rom. this did not allow the above to work. Had this issue on 2 s5's.
I have tried the 'fixes' that others have suggested to no avail. I have also tried to send the developers some of these questions with no response (i get they are busy).
After repeating this procedure (back to Stock ODIN/CF Root/Philz/new room) over and over with the same results i decided to STOP after flashing Philz
Then I DL-ed 'root app delete' from the play store. Took off all the crap i didn't want.
Flashed volume boost
installed adw launcher
This 'stock' room is the only one i could use where everything was working correctly.
That being said, i would like to have a dark theme for contacts, system ui, settings, etc. Without having to worry about screwing up everything i have set up for the 15th time.
Additionally, i had quick pic installed and a gallery hidden. Now, quick pic not installed and cannot get that gallery to show back up to use the new 'protection mode'. I have check the permissions using root explorer. They are set to rrw for all. I have cleaned cashe and still can get that gallery to show up.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance,
Steve

*I am the same user from above just recovered my prefered email and user name association.
Its been almost a week. Does no one have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

How to restore using Titanium Backup

I had recently rooted my phone and had installed Titanium backup using which I backed up all the apps+data.
Using Titanium backup I tried to remove a stock app provided by lg. During this process the phone rebooted twice and after that I saw that the phone had been reset to the factory settings.
I restored by following the below steps
Titanium backup > Backup/Restore > menu > batch > Restore > run Restore missing apps + all system data.
After restoring I observe that the phone is not being able to connect to any wifi, however previously when it was in factory reset it was being able to connect to wifi. Could anyone please help.
Which stock app did u remove?

I think it was one of "Dhingana", "Bollywoodji" or "AG indian newspapers". I had restored after that but currently I do not find "Dhingana" among the installed apps.
It would be the best of you would factory reset again. If you have a custom recovery, then reboot into it(either from ROM Manager or with phone off holding Volume Down+Home+Power) and wipe data, cache etc. If you haven't got a custom recovery, then power your phone off and use the key combination above. It should work.
And don't use "restore system data" option in Titanium. Better restore individual apps in the "Backup/Restore" without going into the Batch mode.

Which setting/file are the system settings saved in? Things like the nav bar, notification bar, display, account syns, etc....? I know all about the pitfalls of restoring system data across different ROMs and for those cases, I just bite the bullet and redo all of those settings. But it seriously takes an hour or two to go in and redo all of those settings and if a RM is getting updated every couple of weeks, this just gets way too tedious for it to be worth it.
I know I can just do a system data + app and data restore for those cases and I do use that but there are times when I do not want every single thing restored and it would be nice to know which file all of those settings are saved in. I tried tinkering with just a few of those but I could not seem to find it.
Thank you in advance for any help, much appreciated.
And/or which file(s) cause the android.process.media to stop working and in general causes apps to crash? Also, does the Android ID cause/affect that? Thanks again.
[Edit] After much trial and error, I found the cause of the android.media.process and all apps in general crashing as a result problem(s). It was the file(s) Download Manager eng.prbassplayer and/or Downloads eng.prbassplayer inside Titanium Backup - Restore System Data selections. Just fyi for those wanting to know. I restored all other system and app data besides those and had no problems whatsoever with all Interface settings restored. I still did not figure out which file restored the Interface settings, if anyone could still shed some light on that.
This post relates to custom ROMs and restoring stuff with TB. Hoping someone can help.
I have been playing with Resurrection Remix for the last 7 months and have recently switched to Vanilla Rootbox.
With these two ROM's (and probably others) when an update is released a wipe/factory reset is required before installing the update. This causes a great amount of inconvenience as I have to manually re-setup all my shortcuts/widgets, email accounts, custom settings such as custom settings (toggles, etc...) ringtones and notifications sounds and so on.
All this takes ages and I'm getting a little tired of having to do it. There must be an easier way? Can this sort of stuff be restored with TB? I could be wrong but I don't think it can.
Many thanks.

try to save them in TB, if you can find in TB and save them it will be restored to any rom you will use in future
I was under the impression that those settings caused problems if formats were needed and especially between different ROM's?
And yeah, tmarinos I definitely her you there. I have stopped using those extra customizations for my ROM, though I can usually restore my home screen and app drawer settings safely, thankfully.
The developers of my ROM (Slim Bean) have started that they want to include a feature to restores those settings between resets, so hopefully that type of feature becomes more integrated as time goes on. Hopefully.
On another note, my phone's TB is having issues. When it runs an automated scheduled backup task, it keeps saying "insufficient storage" but if I manually run that exact same task it runs just fine. Anyone have any idea what that's about?

verizon g3 apn settings!!!!!

So, I'm obviously new... I've been flashing roms for about 2 months now. Anyhow, I recently flashed a rom (rls12) and for some reason, my mms settings are gone! I managed to find bits and pieces online and it [artially works. What I mean is, if I'm not on wifi, it sends in a hurry. If I'm on wifi, nothing happens. It just keeps spinning, like it's trying but nothing happens. Will someone give me the Apn settings. I tried to do a backup on titanium, but for whatever reason, when i either restore the dialer data or dialer app or both, the message app forcecloses. So I'm kind of out of options... Please helpppp..
I would suggest flashing SynergyRom r484, The installer has a superwipe option, Make sure to backup everything you want to external sdcard! And install from external sdcard only. Then select superwipe and the apps & options you want. If your on Verizon select Bypass activation but Don't select the GSM option. I don't like the last two performance options myself. Repeat BACKUP EVERYTHING YOU WHAT AND NEED TO EXTERNAL SDCARD AND INSTALL FROM EXTERNAL SDCARD ONLY. Not trying to be rude just its very important to do if you superwipe. That should get you back apns if not then read up on odin. That will take you back to complete stock and you will have to root and unlock again. But you will be able to take the ota and then root and unlock if you want. If you go this route follow the instructions for jb the old ics root & stuff will not work.
Good Luck
Cruzin the Galaxy SIII via SynergyRom/Anthrax kernels
484 will work. MMS over wifi is not native. It is a hack and has to be in rom.
I fixed it. Not sure how really. Lol. Well I do know. Lol. I did a dirty flash of rls12 and changed to aop. Then it was force closing. I restored my back up of my messaging settings from rls11 through titanium back up and it worked. If anyone else is having this problem I'll be glad to send my backup settings. Once someone tells me how lol

Multiple problems updating CM10.1.1

Hello, I am new to the forum when it comes to posting but I have done lots of research and can not figure out the solution to my problems. A little about my device: VZW sgs3 SCH-i535, currently on version 4.2.2 running CM version 10.1.2-d2vzw.
I originally ran 10.1.1 and worked fine (except I had no notification sound) and have been having multiple problems ever since I tried updating to different versions. here they are:
1. after update I no longer am able to connect to google play store.
2. Unable to open and view messages and rom manager due to immediate force close.
3. I no longer have superuser app on phone but some apps (like titanium backup, LMT, EZ-Unlock, and AdAway) still request superuser access when phone reboots.
4. Lock-screen displays "no data ? tap to refresh".
I have tried multiple things to try and fix like, clearing cache and dalvik cache, restoring system from a previous backup, restored apps and system data. I was unable to find this problem anywhere else on this forum so I decided start a thread. My next step is to wipe my phone and start over unless I can get some help from you guys/gals. Any help is appreciated.
forgot to mention, when I updated the last time to the 7-24 build my phone got stuck in a bootloop which is why I ended up restoring the phone from a previous backup.
Thanks

[Q] Laggy performance after JB 4.1.2

Hello there..
I was on stock ICS.. i installed the stock JB and the performance was very laggy even worse than Honeycomb, i was advised to backup my apps via titanium backup, wipe cache and data from the cwm recovery and restore my apps again. I successfully did that and the performance was a little better but lots of apps crash and restart, the biggest problem is when i open any app specially a web browser or a game then go to home screen or use another app for a while and get back to the browser again its like i open it from the beginning "the browser tabs reloaded and if a game it restarts".. This problem was on honeycomb and was solved by installing Go Launcher and was fully solved by installing the ICS.. Is there a solution for the JB to get that performance back?

JB is very good and much much better than HC or ICS...
So I guess your concern would be the backup/restore procedure...
When you restored from TB, did you do a full restore or just apps restoration ??? ^^
If you did a full restore : including system files and configuration, then this should be your issue...
Try to do a factory reset (no need to use cmw, just from your settings) and only restore your apps, and see if that helps ?!?!?!
As another option, use the Google or Samsung backup/restore procedure... ^^
I know, I know, Samsung Kies may suck sometime... But some other times, it may help...

I really appreciate u took time to read and answer so thank u so much
i backed up my apps and few system stuff like Bluetooth and wifi points and alarms.. i've been told that some apps may not be compatible with JB that's why it crash and close
so do u think i should do the backup again before the factory reset ?
Still i can't find an option to backup my apps by kies, i can only see few things to be backed like contacts and sms not the apps
and i dont know what is Google backup restore thing, i googled it but i only find apps on play store
There seems to be TRIM (or flash handling) bug in official firmware [SOLVED]
I had official ICS 4.0.2 firmware on my Galaxy Tab 7.7 phone (GT-P6800), but it becomes slow and sluggish and I was unable to do anything. Even popping up screen to accept phone call was so slow, the caller hang before I was able to do. Also writing on touch keyboard was really slow and unusable.
I tryed to reflash, I tryed Slim version of official firmware too with no luck. The system was faster, but even no apps were added (just system update through Google Play), the responsibility of the system become sluggish again (and even worse than before).
Then I recognized that even I pick firmware reset from CWM or from Settings (in Android system), my internal flash memory is not deleted and many (hidden) files remains there (one may think that internal flash was empty, because hidden files are not normally shown). As I had some applications making A LOT of (hidden) files (maps, geocaching, etc), the clues become visible to me. [I tryed to do factory reset from system and from CMW too, so there could be bug too]
To make story short, I manually deleted all files in internal memory (by running "My files", tap on Menu, and pick "Show hidden files"). This takes LOOONG and then the system become more usable, but still not enough.
And yes. There is legendary TRIM command which makes flash memory to know what portion of the flash memory is free to use. Without that even one deletes files, the flash itself does not know that the place is really free and keep data on it. When TRIM command is used, the internal FTL (Flash Translation Level) system in flash chip can use place marked by TRIM to spread writes and wear level writes to not destroy some parts of flash with excessive number of writes (they are limited to 10-100 thousands times or so). The TRIM allows FTL to breath. So what now? Android officially support TRIM since 4.3, but there is no 4.3 version of Android for Galaxy Tab 7.7 at all, only 4.1.2 (but only for East Asia officially). But this is better than nothing. Maybe Samsung put some support to 4.1 (backport?) as Samsung do for other features or (maybe) fix some other issues related to flash support? I don't know...
Then I decided to go to 4.1.2 from from here and wrote some info to the Wiki. And I reflashed, deleted cache, Dalvik cache (from CWM), then I fill up space in internal flash memory and then deleted all files from "My files". And viola! The speed is incredible again
To the end - maybe it is not necessary to go to 4.1.2, maybe just make sure you delete all files (including hidden ones). But I does not care about it. I have KIES_HOME_P6800DXMD3_P6800OLBMD3_1157844_REV00_user_low_ship.tar from URL mentioned above (no M3D DEODEXED was put on top of it). This is East region stock firmware and I happily use it in central Europe (SMS, normal call works, MMS was not tested yet). The only thing that seems to not work is support for 5GHz Wi-Fi (I don't see it in Wifi Analyzer) but I do not care and I'm enjoying full speed of my 7.7 again Sorry for long post. Just FYI.

This happens when Dalvik cache contains data about more recent applications (ie. you install one with older time mark than was before). You have to go to CWM and delete Dalvik cache (in Advanced menu). As I wrote below, there could be bug even in CWM so you may want to try 6.0.3.0 (I have this now) see link.

[Q] white settings menu

Hi guys, been using this great phone.for.2 months already. Used a couple of roms in the past but returned to rooted, locked bootloader stock rom with the latest update. I just had a question is it possible to make the settings menu white witout being deodexed? Or at least without modification of system files. Please.note I do not have any sort of recovery installed. Just rooted so I can use greenify and Uninstal bloatware. I really like the white menu, been searching and only foind it in custom.roms. anyway I can do that on stock? thanks in advance. I've decided to.use.stock as I could.find lots.of.bugs.on the.custom roms. Aand.I really like the stock ui. ANY advice?
Hey mate, sorry to inform you but I think you have to deodex. However I think there is another way, I understand you prefer clean stock rom, I can't unlock my bootloader and it is indeed the fastest rom do the following, search on the themes and apps for Honami white settings and you will find a port that even has cpu control.
Go to your apps folder (use root Explorer); delete your settings and settings.odex, and now copy the files you downloaded from the port and copy them with correct permissions. Then reboot and I think you are all done. Also search for an app or way do delete your cache, including dalvik so you avoid errors. I'm thinking about doing this myself so try it and tell me if something went wrong so I can help
