HI-RES AUDIO on Z3 via USB has vanished - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So it seems Sony removed Hi-Res Audio from the Z3 when they changed Walkman to "music".
I have been using the XBA-Z5 earphones and MDR-Z7 headphones through the
PHA-3 Sony amp with Xperia Z3
and the sound with this set up, while not really mobile,
is beyond incredible.
BUT after lollipop the option to use the PHA-3 amp for hi res audio
through UBS is missing.
Here is the old settings page on z3...( sorry Japanese )
and the new one

Yup not there for some time now.
Sony is promoting their new HiRES player. So they removed it on Z3. They always do that. It's called marketing.

The option still exists in the latest "Music" app for Kit Kat. The reason why you don't see it in Lollipop is because Lollipop supports sound over usb natively. Kit Kat did not. It was a custom option that Sony added to our phone.
"Android now includes support for standard USB audio peripherals, allowing users to connect USB headsets, speakers, microphones, or other high performance digital peripherals. Android 5.0 also adds support for Opus audio codecs."
https://developer.android.com/about/versions/lollipop.html

Sorry if I bump an old thread but does the USB amplifier works natively like the previous poster said or they removed the functionality? I was thinking about buying one but I'm worried it might not work properly now that the option has vanished.

I would say the above reply is correct, this was simply blended into 5.0 and you no longer need to check the USB box,
it is automatic.
Still, I was inspired to buy a ZX2 walkman in fear we were losing the hi res audio and sadly now no going back, wow.
Now I get why the phone app was changed to "music".
Still, I'd say above issue and this thread issue has been resolved.
Hi Res Audio is still a part of Z3 ( though I noticed they dropped the Hi Res Audio logo when promoting the Z4 in Japan ?? )

Kind of off-topic but how is that ZX2? Worth the investment?

In my opinion absolutely without question, the sound when used with the correct headphones and amplifiers, and even without the amplifier, is beyond belief incredible. So I would say a very strong absolute yes.
I grabbed the xbaz5- in ears by Sony for when carrying this thing around outdoors, and that too is an incredible experience and also well worth what many are are going to be a ridiculous monetary investment.

While I'm perfectly content with my Z3 and ATH-IM03's, I can only wonder and dream what nearly $2k of portable sound equipment provides to the ears.
I imagine it's something like being cradled by a choir of singing angels in a cloud chapel.

Thanks for the information. I just removed the Music update and gone back to Walkman. Now i´m able to use my DAC again.

video out

this is probably a silly question but is this impossible?
somehow have a usb to svid lead and some software?
i forgot about sound.. could audio be run through miniusb also?
Well, while I can't say its IMPOSSIBLE, I can say its highly unlikely to exist.
The mini USB on these devices is designed only to be a slave port (meaning, it can connect to a host, such as a PC, but it cannot act as a host to other devices, such as a mouse or keyboard... the connected device needs to host it). That being said, the mini-USB wouldn't appear to have the capability on the surface.
I have seen mini-SD cards that use the SDIO interface to control a VGA output, but the problem with the Tornado is that the card slot is under the battery, making it impossible to have a wire sticking out to a screen. And even then, its not a "true WYSIWYG" video out, but rather the ability to show slides, such as powerpoint using their software.
Now, the reason I saw that its NOT impossible is because theoretically, I've already done something similar using a Media Center PC attached to my TV. I had a video on my phone that I wished to show someone on a bigger screen, so I plugged the tornado into the PC using the USB, and started WM5torage, which effectively made the tornado a mass storage device. Then, the media center PC played the video from my storage card on the TV.
While this may not be exactly what you had in mind, I think its possible (if someone were inclined to design it), to make a box that could pull off video files on demand from your device, and then output them to a svideo or RCA jack. It still wouldn't be a real VGA out, but it would sorta make you feel like you had an ipod video.
As far as audio, your device already has a stereo audio jack. You can plug that into a Television using a 3.5mm to RCA adaptor cable (similiar to the ones that sell for the ipod video), and then a 2.5mm to 3.5mm coming out of your phone (I did that once too, don't ask why...). Won't help with video though.
Some more information that is interesting to note:
-There ARE some windows mobile devices that have USB host capability, particularly the Toshiba pocket PC's of yesteryear. They allowed usb keyboards, printers, mice, flash drives, etc... to be connected to the port directly on the device. So, that would make what you are describing much more feasible. However, the Toshiba's also supports an expansion pack that included a VGA out, so you'd already be all set if you had one of those! too bad they haven't come out with a current device in a long time (there's some new ones on the horizon I've seen though).
-New Bluetooth specifications are being laid out that include protocols for transfer of video, much like A2DP is for audio. The problem is, much like A2DP for audio, there will most likely be many hurdles with compatibility, and it probably won't be so reliable even when working.
Good luck!
That would be pretty cool, to have something like "bluetooth audio/video distribution profile"

I'm pretty sure it will need BT 2.0's enhanced bandwidth to carry all that data smoothly, so either way when this comes out, we'll need to get new devices by then.
But yea, the concept IS cool... Bluetooth totally rocks when used properly!
inasmuch as i would like to believe that such a thing can be done, dishe's right. it is unlikely. theoretically, it possible - but the cost and hassle to create something like this would not be cost effective (and hassle-effective ^_^) for the inventor... unless there are reaaally generous people out there... sigh.
anyway, check this picture out. if this were real, that would make this the perfect phone (oh, and hot swappable SDIO... almost forgot about that ^_^)

A few ways do do this...
Run MyMobler via BT and use camtasia or windows media encoder to Live Screen cap the MyMobler window. Then Stream to any format and publish. You can also play out to webcam.
There was a miniSD video output cad you can get on ebay, but for some devices where the SD card is under the battery it wont work.
Lastly there is Comvu.com try thier cab it works well with wifi and 3g

I guess it does, same connector. Give it a try.
Is working perfectly with tf3d and fm receiver
Can you use your own headphones with this?
http://www.expansys.com/d.aspx?i=150195
if you check the description and a user comment says you can 3.5 mm
Yes you can!
Key Features
- The E100 includes 3.5mm stereo earphones or use your own!
Nice to know that this is working, can anyone post some real pics, so I can get an impression of the real size and colour!
who can i buy the RC E100 (will this be sold separately as an accessory)?!
Yes you can, check HTC homepage or use google.
Can anyone try if this works with the diamond as well? Especially the buttons on the control device.
Tested and approved.
I bought it for my Trinity and now it works perfectly for my diamond.
Works as an antenna for the FM. All controls working nativly with the new TouchFlo3D.
perfectly, thank you for your confirmation!

I read somewhere in the net, that you might have problems with some of the HTC devices. Can you please confirm, that:
a) with this remote attached, the screen turns off (save battery time)
- I read, this is not the case
b) the screen will always turn on as soon you press any key (even in you pocket)
c) works perfectly with the Diamond
Thanks in advance
RC E100 plugged without any driver or software added - screen turned off
- by pressing Play, it plays the music and the screen stays turned off
- by pressing next-previous, it changes the song and the screen stays turned off
- by controlling the volume (buttons at the bottom) it changes Volume and the screen stays turned off
the only buttons that turns on the screen are the one for phone calls.
Tested right now with my Diamond
How about the sound quality, is it better than the ones that come in the box?
I had a P1i before, and I planning to buy the RC E100 and use the intra speakers from the hpm-75:
Has anyone tried the same? Do you think I'll get the same sound quality as my SE phone, which was much better?
I plugged a basic Sony headset. I didn't try yet the one in the box.
Peio64 ? With a name like that, you are from Euskadi ?
(edited sry double post)
Haha yes, I probably have the only diamond in the region
So you use your sony headset with an adaptor, can you compare with the crappy htc one?
Other question: I found the volume really too loud, I usually listen to music at work, and even with 1 volume bar (hard to set with the finger by the way), I think it's too strong. Does the minimal volume change with other handsets?

Can you please concretize what you mean by "crappy htc"? I have a SE and the same headset as Peio64. And. I am quite happy with it. Is the htc worse?
When I say "crappy" I mean
- no bass
- bad "isolation" (everyone around can hear what you're listening)
It's about the headset that comes in the box, don't know about the RC E100, anyway I will use the RCE100 remote with the HPM-75 intras, the lenght of the wire will be perfect
Has anyone has tried the RC E100 with a hermes?
What other devices (besides the Tytyn II and Diamond) can confirm?
Does anyone know the difference between the two (RC E100 and RC W100)?
I tried the RC W100 with my hermes ( with a few different ROMs) with no luck...
Is it true you can only control audio manager and WMP?
Can anyone look over the "driver cab" to see if other players might be possible?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Guys,
Can someone, anyone, please confirm the difference between using the supplied headphones that come with the HRC diamond which are
a) bass-less (and I already know about the Audio booster bug - I mean they still dont have much bass when you have worked around that bug)
b) not isolated well (as pointed out above)
and compare with using a decent set of 3.5mm headphones that are connected with the RC E100 or with one of those USB to 3.5mm adapters that you can get from ebay.
Does better headphones = lots more bass? The supplied headphones just don't seem to push out much but I wonder how much of a role the actual diamond plays in this....
Thanks in advance to anyone who can confirm this.

Audio out

If i use the 3.5mm headphone breakout cable with headphones, i hear music fine, if i plug a 3.5mm lead that goes to my stereo, nothing is output, if i play with the 3.5mm jack, i can maybe hear music for a second before the music app closes and again no music is output except internal speaker.
Does anyone know the answer to this?
its something to do with the output resisitance. we need to change it. there was some development/research into this a while back.

The answers are a bit scattered across several threads, but if you have a look at Post #7 and onwards in this one is a good start. There are also some photos of made up leads showing how to address.
In essence Oly's comment is correct, but the nub of the issue comes down to the fact that the uUSB port is not just a hard-wired audio output in the manner of a traditional 3.5mm socket. The same contacts are used for multiple functions depending on the resistance presented to the sense contact. That causes the device to change mode and then channel data or audio or go into charging mode, etc.
I can't instantly give you all the links, but if you search on the TG forum for 'audio' and my username, you will find several further references. One in particular on Brighthand gives details about connecting an external hard drive successfully.
Hope that helps,

Kevin
Audio Output to amplifier
Here

and here, as kevinpwhite say, was the first thread facing this problem
http://www.modaco.com/content/toshiba-tg01-tg01-modaco-com/298887/headphone-amplified-sound-output/
Below, my own experience "tuning" a couple of PHILIPS portable amplified speakers to use with TG01 soldering a couple of 470 Ohm resistors:
1)between input left cable and ground cable
2)between input right cable and ground cable as well.
This doesn't affect to the sound at all and you can use any other sound source without problems.

Anyone got any idea?
thx!
to my knowledge, i think you're out of luck. but i know there are some apps that can work like headset controls. eg. im using an earphone that's made for iOS, although i can't use the volume up and volume down button, i can customise the middle button using the headset control app. All the best!

i use that thing with some quality in ear phones from shure Works perfectly.
I use PlayerPro for music. So 1 click is play/pause music or take/end call. 2 clicks is next song, 3 clicks is last song. For volume i can use the hard buttons on the dhd And of course it has a microphone so you can use it as a headset. Oh and its quite affordable!

no offense but it's hard to believe that it's a good quality product for that price and i'm not talking about the earphones just the control !
of course you don't have to believe me. It was just my opinion and the cable did work brilliantly for me, it serves the purpose- take calls, pause, fast and back forwards etc. As for the extra earphone , of course it was no match compares to the Shure 530, but it's fantasic considering it is free. Shure 530 it's about £350 pounds, will you believe now that I think it's good? Or you still don't think it is expensive enough to be of good quality? Don't judge a product by it's price.

Question Audio - better quality, wired & wireless.

Hello everyone,
By way of introduction: I'm some kind of audiophile, and really like good quality music, I would like to make my s22ultra to the best mobile device (in terms of sound quality).
I would like to mention a few aspects related to audio in this topic.
1. App for audio (streaming) + audio player
2. Android Auto & sound/music
3. Devices wired & wireless
4. Others additional devices/apps to make sound better quality
What is your experience ?
What are you doing to improve the sound?
Ad.1 - switch from Spotify to Tidal (master, hifi) and think that quality is better - incomparable.
I'm don't using any app too source music - which app is good?
Ad.2 - I was change options with codec in AA by programic options, and its better too ! (see below)

Ad.4 I think about headphone amplifier (dac fiio k5) to make better sound quality - it have sens? AA in car will play better quality (connected by usbc, by phone)?
Someone use a adapter (usb-C to minijack 3.5)? Can someone something recommend?
Poweramp, only .wav, HDCD or higher resolution* files. Buds+** sound pretty good once dialed with the Poweramp equalizer. Next step up be a LDAC bud or headphone solution. Otherwise you're stuck using the inconvenient C port.
*MP4's are ok... better than mp3's I believe
**if you get the Buds+ DO NOT update the factory loaded firmware as it will screw up the sound. They run very good on the factory load, this applies to the last production run firmware.
If you like the Buds+ try to pick up a new pair, not used manufacturer shortly before being discontinued. I don't like Samsung's current Buds lineup... I have 3 pairs of Buds+
Just use an external DAC on USB-C port

I'm currently using this which is arguably one of the best out there for SQ in the under $15 budget category..
Media Monkey has an excellent AA compatible player app that supports all formats. They also have windows software that will organize your music library, includes a server function to stream to all of your audio systems via Wi-Fi.
Has ripping, formatting and a host of other features that are included in the 'Gold' package.
I've used it for many years and would say it's a must have setup for 'some kind of audiophile types'.
In the car I use AA for convenience. I also use a flash drive loaded with 1,800+ flac files. That sounds superior with the Lincoln Revel Ultima 19 speaker system.
I can't help with the audio settings for the phone. I use it primarily to control my music more so than playback with headphones/earbuds.
