Im looking into the S6 and the research I've done has been inconclusive, so I'm here. I'd like to know if I can use 3g or lte during a phone call? Im currently on my s5, I do a lot of tethering and when I get a phone call it stops my data. I really need to maintain my data connection when I receive calls, so I'm considering going back to an s4 for that one feature alone. Can anyone who actually has an s6 tell me if they can use 3g or lte during a phone call? Thanks.
Depends on the carrier. I have Verizon, I can do both. Stock firmware. Although I do have advanced calling enabled, which is what makes the iPhone able to do it. I didn't check with it off. I'll see if I can turn it off and report back.
Edit. Cannot use voice and data without advanced calling enabled.
Go to settings and activate, then enable it.

I have the cricket GS6 which is virtually the ATT variant and service and I can talkno the phone and use the internet at the sender time. Only thing is if you are on LTE the phone will go to 4G while on call.

My S4 had that ability on sprint. But now my S6 can't
Sprint uses CDMA and from what I know they cant do data + calling unless the carrier supports it for the said phone.
Has less to do with what the carrier supports and more to do with whether the device has 2 antennae instead of just one. The s4 has 2 antennae, one of which comms with voice for calls and a separate one which comms with data, allowing you to use 3g or LTE during a call. Even phones as old as the HTC hero, OG evo, evolte, Samsung moment etc all had this capability due to the hardware. Now I want to know if the s6 is following the same "less for more" path that the s5 started by excluding hardware for their crazy high prices on the devices...

The chip they used for the CDMA radio is the first ever to allow voice and data at the same time over CDMA. Also, if you're in a 4G area, it works by keeping voice on CDMA, and of course using LTE for data.

I have used it for a week, and I can tell you this: You CAN do that talk and browse the web thing at the same time on 4G AND 3G. I did it many times, and no problems. No need to jump on wifi or anything.

You can use Voice + Data while under 3G or 4G, but only if you are in an eHRPD area. (Settings > About > Network > Mobile Network Type) If it shows CDMA EVDO rev a or 1xRTT or whatever, you may not Call and use Data.
EDIT: Also, from what is available on the Net about eHRPD, this is the 'transition' between CDMA/EVDO and LTE.... It would be my guess that this means that anywhere eHRPD is available.... they should expect LTE in 2011. Just my two cents...

Hmmm.. I have been wondering why Verizon isnt using this feature to silence ATT fanboys, but I guess not everywhere with 3G supports it, so they dont want to really advertise the feature if it doesnt work everywhere.
They are most likely trying to perfect their system, as there are probably bugs (not that have seen) they would like to squash out - before going out to squash at&t.
Although i do laugh when i see that at&t commercial now....

No, eHRPD has more to do with LTE smooth handoffs than simul voice and data.

Probably cuz the iPhone doesn't use it yet?. I have only seen iphones on those att commercials doing the talk and browse thing.
I talked to a Verizon rep and asked them why all their phones didn't do this, they said something along the lines of because they wanted to keep calls on a seperate networks that way it can help stablize and keep from getting dropped calls.. Not sure how accurate that is.. I would think if they are on seperate networks then they could both be utilized..
Tbolt has two radios in it. One for voice/sms and slow data, the other for 3g/4g. That is why you can browse and talk at the same time (as long as you're in 3G or LTE area).

I went with this phone simply because it was inexpensive for the hardware and I don't have to renew my contract to avoid paying an arm and a leg. The phone has to support SVDO in order to do voice+data on Sprint. Very, very few phones do (the EVO 4G LTE did, the HTC One didn't, for example). It requires a special antenna configuration as well IIRC.

Unfortunately no, the nexus 5 does not support SVDO or SVLTE. This means it also will only connect to one airlink at a time - when you receive a call, it will switch to 1x, pausing your LTE, similar to older handsets.

"That is what we have been told. Sprint tri band LTE devices will not support SVLTE. Whether that is due to band 26 LTE 800, band 41 TD-LTE 2600, or the combination of the two, we do not know. And the sample size is very small right now to project unconditionally into the future. But the standard expectation going forward should be no SVLTE on Sprint multi band LTE devices. Simultaneous voice and data will have to be accomplished by other means, such as third party VoIP apps and eventually VoLTE."
I are a sad sprint customer lol. Also why I went with a multi carrier phone off contract June 2014 can't come soon enough, cause I loves this phone!
This was my biggest complaints with this phone on sprint. I couldn't do it so I activated it using straight talk for att and couldn't be happier. It's unfortunate that spark phones on sprint won't do simultaneous voice and data, at least for now. But I'm not willing to compromise.

I hear that. My biggest issue with switching providers is that I average 5-6gb of data usage/mo on my line and about 12gb combined with the other two phones on my family plan (Ting told me not to switch lol). It's hard to beat the bargain offered for services rendered from Sprint. Nickles and dimes I suppose. Oh well, maybe 2015 will be the year of the phone... (Oh wait, we'll probably have 5g by then and tri-band will evolve to octa-band with the same problems )

I still have a family plan on sprint so if my data amount becomes an issue I'll go back but for now I'll sacrifice more data for fast and always available data, and at a rate of $45 I'll take it.

I have ST AT&T service. When I am on a call though, I lose LTE. It switches me to H (HPSA I think). Speed is not terrible, but would be nicer to have LTE while on a call. Do you have the same experience? If not, do you know how I can have LTE while on a call? Thanks.

Nope, that's by design. It has to do with available radios. If LTE isn't on a separate radio it can't be used simultaneously. On the upside, having less radios means better battery life overall.
Has anyone gotten the T-Mobile Wi-Fi calling features to work on the moto x?

I'm on Republic Wireless, our moto x is a modded sprint phone. My WiFi calling works amazing.
PS I used to be on T-Mobile with my HTC One. I just couldn't resist the savings that RW gives me.

How's sprint service? I'm tempted, but everything I hear about it is horrible. I had sprint before and it was bad, especially data.
I had sprint before actually. I had a GSII that I bought on contract 30 days before the GSIII announced and launched. So I was stuck with a 4G wimax phone in an area where we have no sort of 4G. And I was stuck paying for that useless 4G.
I'm happy with republic since with WiFi I don't worry about call reception. And it roams on Verizon if needed.
And for data plans I can pay and use 3G if I wanted to or 4G if it ever comes here. But I'm happy not having data when driving or shopping. And only paying $10 makes me happy with that decision.
But yes I won't lie. Sprints 3G is usually abysmal. My fiancée just got an iPhone 5S on sprints one up. Now he's paying $96/month for the same service I get on a ****ty iSheep device.
If I wanted to use 4G I'd only have to pay $40/month and thats comparable to T-Mobile pre and postpaid. And republic let's you switxh plans twice a month if you want. They are talking of simply selling buckets of data too for people like me that are happy with just cell calls And texts with WiFi only data, but occasionally wish we had a bit of mobile data.

No input on Wi-Fi calling but I will chime in on Sprint services with the Moto X!
I am coming from and 18 month old Evo LTE, rooted to the Moto X with the Sprint SIM card installed (bought from MotoMaker Cyber Monday) Had to activate the phone through a chat conversation on the activation website.
-I will admit that I am now actually very pleased with Sprint service in my area....
-It actually connects really well to 4G and STAYS connected....
-It (usually) re-connects to 4G when in an area of 4G unlike with my Evo (meaning it would sometimes connect to 4G then the next day I wouldn't even be able to connect to force 4G in the same location)
-The Sprint 4G speeds SUCK at best though. Check Sensorly speeds in my 4G area..... you may see a 14mb but average would MAYBE be 6MB, me that's 3G speeds.
-I still am thinking of dropping Sprint. Sure it's unlimited but Sprint has taught me to rely on Wi-Fi.
Well doing some research I found that republic wireless uses sprint signal. Even doing a coverage check they say to look at sprints maps. So I also seen that bringing a sprint phone to republic wireless is not possible because of republics wifi calling or what they call hybrid calling has specific code baked into their phones Rom.
So with that info how hard would it be to extract that features code from their Roms for use on Sprint phone s? Or could a Sprint phone flash a republic rom and be able to use that wifi calling feature on Sprint.
Wifi Calling has always been closed source and will never be available on 3rd party ROM......If something change it would be #1 news on XDA

I took a look at his phone and were settings in his phone related to WiFi calling. But it was wanting account information or a sip account. Thought that was interesting.

I think the SIP internet calling options were added waaay back in GB?. Maybe it wasn't until ICS. OP wants native wifi calling. Google Voice + Groove IP is about as close as you can get for now.
Odd, I thought you could activate Internet Calling with a build.prop change & something in the permissions folder... Noticed I had it on my CM10.1.3 Galaxy Note.

I have no problem doing both while connected to advanced calling. However, if advanced calling isn't available, I can't surf the internet. This isn't a Verizon thing, it's a Samsung deal. They didn't include the radio to allow for it. This may very well have sealed the deal for me to take it back and stick with the Note 4. Being in a rural area a lot, I need both no matter what network is currently available.
It's a CDMA carrier issue with these newer phones that only have a single antenna for cellular radio.
Droid Turbo, Moto X, Nexus 6, HTC m9, etc...
It would be the same on other CDMA carriers such as Sprint.
I first noticed it when I got a Droid Turbo, and it was really frustrating. You also notice it when using SignalCheck Pro, on my G3 you see a 1X and LTE connection active, but on the S6 you see either or depending on your connection.
You wouldn't think it would add much cost to the phone with the second antenna.
VoLTE has always required LTE to function. The giveaway is the freaking "LTE" in the name.

I'm fairly certain everyone in here knows this. The issue isn't with VoLTE, it's that they left a radio out that allows talking and surfing without VoLTE. Note 4 and LG G3 could do it before they received the update that made them VoLTE capable.
You're confusing simultaneous voice and data with VoLTE. OP sure didn't understand that LTE is required for VoLTE.
What has changed is that Verizon is starting to ONLY support simultaneous voice/data VIA VoLTE, in place of extra radios.
Unfortunately this is Verizon's trend. In theory it should improve battery life vs a two radio system. In theory...
They're pushing for this and honestly I think it's a bad choice, at least in the short term. Calls while using VoLTE on Verizon are 100% dependent on your LTE signal. So if it gets too weak or you have to switch to 3G, the call drops. It also can be unusable if the LTE signal is weak. Verizon's FAQ even says if you're in an area of weak LTE or spotty LTE, to disable VoLTE. AT&T and T-Mobile have a fallback so the call won't drop.
To be sure that I am understanding correctly, let me ask it in a dumb downed way.

If you make a call while in LTE, you CAN use the internet while in the call.

There are a number of techs involved with have both voice and data for CDMA phones/network like VZW. In the past, VZW LTE phones could connect Data on the 4G LTE and have voice connection over 3G/CDMA simultaneously but on the newer phones like the Turbo, Nexus 6, S6 this is no longer possible UNLESS you have VoLTE enabled and are in a 4G LTE location.
The Thunderbolt actually can have both 3G data and Voice simultaneously and one of the few phones which could do that but the battery quickly dries up

Guess I will hold on longer to my Note 3 and S3(love it)for a while longer. The S3 is still a great phone in my opinion. Does what you need, and fairly well. Plus you pretty much can recover from any brick status.
Sad to see the way phones are going. Locked bootloaders, no root, forced crapware, no sd card, built in battery.
Next up will be DNA link to your device for "Security". That silly fingerprint reader is so yesteryear.

Talk and data works fine on LTE.
You won't lose your unlimited plan to use VoLTE, I use it just fine.
The G3 was one of the last phones to use two radios simultaneously. A ROM won't fix it.

Yes. If you don't have an LTE connection and don't have Advanced Calling enabled, you won't get simultaneous voice and data.

It's all recent Verizon phones. The Nexus 6, Droid Turbo, One M9, S6, etc. None can talk and surf at the same time without VoLTE.
Yeah I'm guessing we are headed towards total VOIP.

That's what Verizon wants. It would be great if Verizon had a fallback if LTE was weak or drops... but as it is right now, it simply takes what Verizon was known for (call reliability) and throws it down the toilet. Ok, it's not that bad... but in the years we were with Verizon before VoLTE, I really don't think I ever dropped a call. I'm sure that's not true, but it was rare. Since VoLTE, it probably happens a few times a month, easy, maybe more . And since I got the S6 last Friday, I've had 4 total due to what appears to be a weaker LTE signal in general on the S6.
My old HTC m7 had this. On Sprint. It's terribly frustrating tethering to my consoles and getting kicked off when i get a call. So is this possible on our phone? Am i missing something?
Well, data and call work fine however when you get a call it'll pop you down from lte to 3g or h+, I'm assuming it's a feature to conserve battery but I'm not 100% on that

This is how the new/ enhanced Sprint network works:
All calls are routed through 3G network. Sprint 3 G is CDMA(Support either data or voice)
For some reason when sprint rebuild this so called Spark network they limited the phone Bands to have either Data or Voice(not both)
How ever some of the Old phones(Gs4 non spark, HTC M7) doesnot have spark capabilities they do Voice over 3 G and data over LTE (if any service available)
To answer your question: This will definitely happen on SGs6. As a user there isn't much you could do unless you use google voice and allow calls to rout to your hang out app.(this works great for me with most of of Commute route has solid LTE and wifi at work)
