You need to flash the new bootloader first

I'm trying to retain my Root, User Data, and CWM Recovery. Can I simply sideload the system.img? Basically create a zip containing only the system.img then use CWM's sideload?
I found my answer here:

Thanks.

[BOOTLOADER] (v4.23) (Android 4.3 JWR66V) N7 Wi-Fi - grouper

Hi guys, here it is download link of Nexus 7 WI-FI (grouper) bootloader v4.23 (stock one shipped with just released android 4.3 JWR66V)
It's not flashable via custom recovery, though.
Flashable version soon (if anyone is faster than me, PM me and I'll post it here :good
for short, fastboot command for flashing:
in fastboot mode, from computer terminal or prompt:
fastboot flash bootloader NAME_OF_THE_FILE.img
complete flashing guide (from adb setup to the end here - thanks to azoller1)
(Download)

SHA-1 7B28B45A035EFB9AAD9E61AD09B1906EB5508721
(I don't take any responsibility about procedure, etc. You know the story, bootloader is from Google's factory image)
Thanks, is working well. For People who asks: You can still use 4.2.2- Roms with this Bootloader!
Is there a need this, or some advantage to it?

I tried to flash back to stock 4.3 earlier and it wouldn't let me because my bootloader was still on 4.18
Also, note the fact that the Google factory images website has the JWR66Y stock image instead of the JWR66V that is found here. For me when I was trying to flash the new bootloader earlier today, the version from the JWR66Y version gave me a 'Signature mismatch' error while the version found here did not.

[Q] Creating a flashable zip from factory image

Hello and thanks for taking the time to read my question. Recently the MicroUSB port on my Nexus 5 stopped functioning leaving me unable to flash the factory image to my phone.
I do have TWRP on my N5, so i was wondering if there was a way for me to create a flashable zip from the factory image so I can at least flash that via TWRP.
Thanks!

I flashed elix rom to experiment one day this week out of boredom, was just seeing what else is out there - was on slimkat and before cyanogenmon -
Then I wanted to go back to cyanogenmod but when I tried to flash, somehow unknown to me my bootloader seemed to have rolled back....typically I had deleted the zip containing the bootloader about three days previous.
ANYWAY - I just found it again and if anyone else should need it, here is the link to the forum that has the bootloader in it

Regarding Rooting Nexus 5 Running Lollipop

I have a confusion after going through various threads.
I have an unlocked bootloader and the device is running Lollipop and I would like to root it.
Should I use Nexus Root Toolkit or CF-Auto-Root.
I'm confused because somewhere I read that I need a custom Kernel, but I have stock Kernel.
I would no want to change my kernel as it will stop further OTA Updates which Google Rolls-Out, according to me. Please correct me on this too if I'm wrong.
I really need help. Thanks in advance
starting from stable supersu 2.35 modified kernel is NOT required.
stay away from auto tool
Flash latest SuperSU in recovery. Stock or custom doesn't matter.

If you have a custom recovery you could flash a custom Rom. Look for the stock Rom by vomer in the development forum. Or you can flash the factory image with fastboot. See the sticky rollup thread in the general forum. In there you'll find a guide to flash the factory image
