After upgrading to Lollipop, all text messages has disappeared.
I've tried installing different SMS apps, with no change.
Checking App info - there is a Phone/Messaging Storage and it has Data on device - 193MB so I'd like to hope the messages are still there but I'm not sure how to access / recover them.
I was trying to find the data folder with that archive but couldn't.
The phone is Sony Xperia ZR, Android 5.0.2, Build 10.6.A.0.454
Any ways I can try and recover the data?
Any idea where the storage is, the 193MB?

Was this an official update?
When flashing a Rom via TWRP or CWM it is best to backup using a backup app e.g. Titanium.
It creates a xml backup of the SMS messages which can be restored.
Unless you have a backup of the previous KK? rom which can be restore, I do not think they can be recovered.

Yes, an official update from PC using Sony PC Companion.
Unfortunately we didn't had a backup.
What makes me think the database is still there is that the data seems to be there - there is a Phone/Messaging Storage and it has Data on device - 193MB...

So I have an Xperia Play on official 2.3.4, but I want to update it to 4.0 MIUI, without losing my data.
If I absolutely need to wipe all my data, is there a way of backing up SMS messages, then restoring them back as if they were never wiped, after the ROM change?

MyBackup and Titanium Backup are two popular apps that can back up all your SMS/MMS and much more. They will back up just about everything you need to your memory card and allow you to easily restore that data after flashing your new ROM.
Ok, I have Titanium Backup Pro with Google Drive enabled, but I can't figure out how to sync to it. I think I'll back a ROM Manager backup just in case..

Hi guys, I recently just flashed CM 12.1 w/ Android 5.1.1 on my Zenfone 2.
Before doing that, I backed up my apps+data using Titanium Backup. After flashing, I transferred back the Titanium Backup folder in the internal storage where it originally was. I then re-installed Titanium Backup. Unfortunately, there's 0 apps that can be restored according to Titanium Backup. I even checked the Storage location and it even showed my backups.
Help ASAP. TIA
Install the apps before backup. It might work.

Nevermind, just found out that my backups were corrupted. Anyways, is there anyway to restore the data of the apps instead? I dont mind re-downloading the apps again as long as I can get my data back
In the titanium backup.
One off the two zips will have you apk inside. Just open the zip and install the apk

Hi there...how did you solve the problem?
I also have the same problem...I backed everything up then flashed cyanogenmod Marshmallow 6.0.1 then after flash copied all the backup folder back to internal memory so it can be seen by Titanium backup app and still doesn't work...it doesn't see anything...although it sees the location and the files under titanium backup/preferences/Backup Settings...Backup Folder Location..but in the app I cannot see any of the apps I backed up...how can I solve the problem..please help me
i think titanium needs to be updated to the latest version. the older version somehow doesn't work and don't see the backups properly (on my stock z3c pre rooted rom). after I installed the latest version, it worked like a charm
WARNING: Titanium doesn't backup the media folder for Whatsapp nor Wechat. backup the media that you want manually before flashing. the chatlogs are backed up properly

Sorry for digging up an old topic but I have a very similar situation and almost got gray hair already

Here's what I have done (and already regret it
- I was on stock 5.1.1 android for xperia z1 compact D5503
- I have installed Kingroot to remove some bloatware applications through titanium backup.
- Then I have made a backup of all applications of my interest (sms/mms, k9-mail etc.) and copied that to a folder on external sd card.
- Then I came over idea of Pre-rooted stock roms. Performed that (downgrade to 4.4.4, root, dual recovery, instal pre-rooted rom from zip).
- Installed TiBackup, copied all backups from sd to internal memory.
- Opened TiBackup - mind blown - no apps with backups.. In Preferences - Folder backups are shown.
Any ideas? Corrupted backups? That would make me very sad

I have solved the riddle. So easy and obvious that I didn't notice.
When I was doing all the stuff from the post above I was using sd card reader.
So to be on the safe side - i have copied all SD card content to win10 PC.
Then when I thought I was ready - copied all to 1 folder "Stuff" and then to SD card.
What I have missed was that during that process file extensions were changed. So all *.properties were now *.properties.txt and all *.bzip were *.bzip.zip and so on.
So my problem is solved. Perhaps someone else could use it too.

Previously, I would just wipe system and flash new ROM not touching data partition and that worked just fine.
That is past seems.
I have flashed new ROM which is based on stock Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus ROM so I could get official updates. The problem is my phone lost one fifth of its performance according to benchmark and it experiences random reboots (I hope not while I am typing ?)
All in all, by restoring previous data on new ROM some of the files seem not to be overwritten well on new ROM (possibly application versions not getting downgraded well).
LogCat did not help.

When switching ROMs, restoring data from a previous ROM causes issues, especially when the data contains system data and apps from the previous ROM, user apps and their data usually restore fine, but the system stuff doesn't.

So this is quite a hard question before trying it myself.
I would like to move from phone but don`t want the hassel of reinstalling all apps ect, I have currently rooted my device and plan on rooting my next one.
My question: Can I backup phone 1 then restore the backup on phone 2? (not same model)
And will all settings and configs like whatsapp ect be the same?

Use Google to backup your photos, videos and contacts.
Try helium for your apps and app data.
Use something like SMS backup to backup text messages there is also a way to backup and restore text messages via Google.
But, you will only be able to backup and restore user data and data partition, you will not be able to do this with any of your system apps or system app data or system data or system settings, these will not restore and work properly on the new device.

I backed up my s22 today to google drive and smartswitch on my pc before factory resetting it. Everything was also backed up to my samsung cloud. I went to smartswitch and did a restore and it said it was successful but I don't have any of my text messages back and although it downloaded the app install files it didn't actually install anything. I'm not too concerned about the apps as I can do those manually but I really need my texts back. Any ideas? I have a backup on SMS Backup and Restore but want to see if I can figure this out before I go through that slow process. Thanks!

Text messages have to be backed up via a separate process such as the SMS backup/restore that you used. If you want your texts backed up and restored, that is the process you need to use.
Long story short, restore your backup from the SMS Backup/Restore app that you already have. This is the generalized/generic way of backing up and restoring text messages. As far as I know, there isn't a simpler/more user friendly method of doing this other than using tools&apps similar to SMS Backup/Restore.
