Heating issue explained (sorta) - Xiaomi Mi 4i

So there are lot of questions about people asking if this heats up or not mostly by people who want to buy this phone nywas there answer is "YES" it heats but its like only the tip of the iceberg i have used lot of mid range and some high end phones before and believe me every phone heats now and then depends on the tasks you perform so is this with this phone but main reason this phone heats up are
1. Snapdragon 615 the 8 core processor is a beast in snapdragon 600 series but with great power comes great responsibility running 8 cores simply means a lot of work so yes if ur playing a game or something that actually uses 8 cores the phone will heat up more compared to a 4 core processor(do the math).
2.Compact motherboard you have to understand that the phone is remarkably slim and compact.
The above are the two main reasons due to which this phone might be getting a little warm. But that doesnt mean this is only phone in the world that heats up the above mentioned are only reasons for this phone
My experience with the phone..
Yes it get got hot during games but believe me it didnt surprise me because the other phones i have used got hot too. And when i say hot i dont mean hot as in a freshly baked cake hot but you can tell its hot (kinda hot)

FYI its not a true octa core phone which means that all the 8 cores never simultaneously work together. The processor is a combination of 4 low power cores for balanced performance and four high power cores for gaming and intensive tasks. They switch as and when required. So your "math" is complete bull ****. However everything else is sane and meaningful. It will be a pity if you bought the phone thinking that the 8 cores work together considering the fact that there exists true Octa core phones in which all the 8 cores really work together.

So you just mean to say that all other phones with this processor heats so that gives Xiaomi a lame excuse for heating.
If they are aware of the extreme heating problems of the processor, why to launch such a lowly device in the first place.
One should not blame and compare other devices just because you are incapable of producing a good phone.
Shameful act by Xiaomi.

No it means dont buy a phone with this processor if ur a power user coz this processors known issues are heating up

Hey man i guess u didnt read till the end i never said all cores work lol i know how it works i also know no app uses 8 core for real (threading and all) anywas i wrote" if they actually work" i guess u didnt read that part.

You are absolutely right, it is established that all 8 cores can be used together, however I am still researching on the fact that how much do we gain on performance by using both the low and high performance cores together (at least for benchmarks and tests). The tools which I am using for benchmarks have a lower resolution rate than the amount of time a core reports to complete a thread and thus the delay.
However apologies for the wrong info, thanks for noticing and correcting.

current firmware (V 6.5.5) has options for change max.freq. for cores ?
Or only switch between "high perf." and "balanced" modes ?

No manual frequency modes as of yet. Just the in-built PERFORMANCE & INTERACTIVE governor modes. I guess we are all waiting for root.

Undervolting FAQ

I read a lot about undervolting on here and i think i have an idea about what it does but i may be way off, and im sure each device is different. in pimp my cpu there are multiple options, and while this sounds newbish i think this should be explained to folks in some more detail.
this is what im assuming.
undervolting allows for less power consumption.
UV on higher OC levels controls power spikes to the CPU?
what is a safe level to UV and at what frequencies specific to the G2x

Here's my understanding of the whole undervolting thing..
In order to maintain stable operation across devices with varying production quality (not all chips are created equal), manufactures use voltage levels higher than necessary for most devices. They cater to the least common denominator. But most phones will still operate reliably at a lower voltage. By undervolting you can extend your battery life and ward off chip killing heat. This all becomes even more important when overclocking. When you overclock your device you increase the power usages (those extra megahertz aren't without cost). This increases both the drain on your battery and the heat produced by your CPU. Undervolting helps to offset both issues.
As for the proper undervolting levels...that will vary with the tolerance of each individual device. But I'm sure someone can provide some general guidelines...sorry I haven't undervolted the g2x yet and don't want to steer you wrong.

what confuses me on this topic is the "it's different for each device" phrase that I keep reading. Is this in reference to the rom/kernel that is being used or is it specific to apps installed/how the phone is used.. or is it a combo of both?
It's confusing me because its seems that OC/UV is hardware specific and each phone has the same hardware. So I don't quite get this "it's different for each device" thing..

Each phone doesn't have the same hardware....for example, G2X has an nvidia tegra 2 and the nexus s has a hummingbird.

yes all g2x's have a tegra 2 chip.
But production does not always produce the same tolerances for all the chips.
ussually(with the quality control apparently given to the g2x who knows) but ussually all chips are tested and every chip that is in a g2x will perform reliably at 1ghz as it is specified and sold at.
some of these will run reliably at 1500 or better while some will not go over 1100 without starting to get unreliable.
example is the droid 1 was sold at 550 mhz. they did an update that upped it to 600mhz so they knew all chips were tested to be ok at that threshold. Mine would run at 1200 reliably no overheating(except running flash) no reboots.
with 2 different kernels. there was another kernel that they messed with the voltages so that i would get constant reboots even at 700mhz.
some droids would not run over 700 without experiencing problems.
So yes the tegra 2 chips is the same but the abilities of it can be different. they are guarenteed to run at the speed they are sold at but most will function at a much higher speed without problems while some will not.
oh just thought of a great example. the AMD tri-core processors.
those are quadcores where 1 of the cores did not pass the tests but the other 3 did so instead of scrapping the entire chip they turned off the bad processor and sold it as a tricore. there are motherboards out there that allow this core to be turned back on and many have done this and it works just fine. its just that core didnt pass whatever minimum they set on it even though it was perfectally functional they determined that if it got to this temp or didnt run at this speed(over what it was sold at) it didnt pass.
So while this kernel at this voltage may run fine on your phone it may caused reboots or lock ups on others.

recently i have bought yu yureka bu micromax
- 1.5.GHz Snapdragon 615 MSM8939 Octa Core Processor / Adreno 405 GPU @ 550 MHz
- 2 GB RAM
- 5.5 Inch HD IPS Touchscreen Display
- Dual SIM Support
- 13MP Primary Camera With LED Flash
- 5 MP Front Camera
- 4G LTE
- 2500 MAh Battery.
- Customizable Cyanogen 11 OS
the phone been heating alot.. the CPU temperature is normally 45C and it raises as we use.. when gaming it goes between 60-65 C and when i run benchmark tools or play heavy games over an hour the temperature goes above 70C the top i observed is 77C..
isnt a processor supposed to shut off at 70C? as for safety reasons till it cools down?? how much this snapdragon 615 processor can get the most? will it burn or burn other internals?? please some1 clarify my doubts! i even noticed many people are facing the same kind of issues with samsung and moto phones which runs on octa core processors.. is it a hardware related issue or a software issue???

No It will not burn any material. It is not the PC Processor, but it seems that your device heats a lot, may be it is a manufacturing defect. Try asking others with the same phone. And don't overheat your phone, dont play games for hours and hours

i dont play games that long.. with this device its hard to play for more than an hour.. 90% of the ppl having this device facing the same issue but most of them seems to be not caring.. some even said the snapdragon615 can withstand up to 100C is that true??

I can't find any temperature values on the qualcomm website. Just write a email to qualcomm for first hand iformations Phone's kernel works with thermal throttling, means depending on the actual cpu temperature the cpu clock is lowered to protect the cpu from overheating. If your hardware works as it should, you can't overheat actual processors by using I suppose. If you can find a custom kernel you probably can set own values for thermal throttling. In any case you should try a kernel tool e.g. Trickster Mod or Performance Control for setting up the cpu. If you think its getting too hot, just deactivate some cores or lower the cpu clock, your phone will still be fast enough for all your applications.

70-80 Degrees isn't a "Worry" Moment, It's actually quite normal for a Octa core to reach that high what do you expect? Since a phone doesn't have a Fan or something like a PC, so it relies on something else which needs longer time to cooldown.
My Nexus 5 using Quad Core reaches almost the same Value (65-70).
Remove the case if you have one since a case will have your phone increase in temperature too.
thanks.. i already hve done it.. i bought a flip cover which i used only for an hour... i worry only when it exceeds 70C.. i can feel the heat near the cam.. it gewts hard even to hold it. i heard meadiatek processors doesnt heat only qualcomm processors does. is it true??
is there any other phone with the same kinda heating issue? like over 70C still survive??

then i guess only the experianced/developers in this forums can help me.. all i wanna know that if its safe to have such high temperatures ( 65 when gaming and 75+ when running benchmarking-stress test) is it ok with this qualcomm anapdragon 615 processor... some said these processors can withstand upto 100c and 90c is the cutoff temprature unlike the old processors.. can some expert who is experianced with developing any apps for any quad/octa core processor out there please help me. i just want this much info only

It comes down to preference really as I dont really like phones bigger than 5" and xiaomi is quite established. Its got the right size, ir blaster and a good SOC which should get good rom support, cm12.1 already available
Where are you based? The Global version of the Zenphone 2 has band 20 which the Mi 4c doesn't have (may be able to be unlocked manually but I'm doubtful). The Zenphone also has expandable storage which the Mi 4c lacks - you may already be used to this and the larger form factor due to currently using the G3. That said, I've heard (but cannot personally verify) that the Zenphone has erratic battery life and performance in addition to being more expensive than the Mi 4c.

Well, my Mi4C had battery drain. Around 3%/hour on idle with WiFi and 4G all off, so when I woke up a third of my battery was already gone. I ended up fixing it by flashing the international ROM but after that, I've been getting 5 hours of SoT which is great. Can't comment on the battery of the Zenfone.
Regarding the battery problem:
Looks like it could different between your's to anyone else.
I read a review in a site in my country and the person who made the review praise the battery life.

My Mi4c has very good battery life. The same like the z1 compact i had. Other phones i had i charged sometimes more than 2 times a day.
The zenfone 2 has worse battery life, build quality and performance. If you don't mind the SD card and 5" screen then the Mi4C is your phone. Zenfone 3 could be very interesting when (should be kinda soonTM) it gets released though!

How abt Redmi note 3?
No battery issue with my Mi4C. Left it idle for most part of the day with cellular and Wi-Fi connected the whole time and managed 0.7% / hour idle time. I also have many apps installed (not facebook or any messaging apps though). It's rooted and greenified, running original stable Chinese Miui 7 Rom with some Chinese bloat apps removed. It's also scoring 52K on antutu 6.

Processing power wise, ZenFone 2 (the high end 32 GB internal memory with 4 GB RAM model) is comparable to Mi4C, the GPU is even slightly better. However, when it comes to video recording, ZenFone is waaaaay below Mi4C. The still image, if you use latest firmware, is already fixed though. Note that due to the use of Intel processor, some apps that use native libraries might not be installable. Ensure your apps are architecture-neutral or have both arm and intel version available.
OTOH, Mi4C has thermal issues and I still can't find the best thermal configuration so far. This causes the cores, both CPU and GPU, get shutted down or their upper limit is decreased to lower down the temperature. I break this limit by changing the limit a little bit higher, but if you play games while charging the phone, my best record reaches 90° C. Hot enough for a sleep killer tea

Having owned both phones i can say the Zen2 is a dud. The screen is dim, the speaker is weak, some apps drain crazy battery as they are using an ARM emulator to run on x86. It wobbles on the desk and the battery dies after your lunch break. The camera has low exposure that makes everything look darker than it is. The Mi4c just works like you expect a flagship to do.

I dont believe in 90° C unless your phone is borked and termal throttling doesnt work, also phone would shut down anyway with that temperature.

It is, well the screenshot I have is 87 actually in one of the many thermal zone (they're all varying from 60 or so) but during that time I did see and feel 90 (as a hot tea drinker, I know how hot is 90). Thankfully I have a flip cover that absorbs the heat, but if you touch the scree, it's really damn hot. Thermal throttling doesn't work on my device, because I've disabled the thermal driver :cyclops:
I don't really know the actual upper limit, but I guess it should be around 100-120. My PC was 120, but I don't think smartphone's SoC will differ much.

Hahaha, worry not, it's been back to normal temp (30-50). The problem only happens if you play resource intensive games while charging.
My last phone Mi4i also reached ~90°C after playing with the thermal engine. The flashlight turned on in the pocket of my pants and burned for half an hour. I just noticed it because my leg got hotter and hotter luckily the phone wasnt damaged through this. Also, i think the CPU can handle these temperatures without being damaged, but i would worry about other phone components such as SD Card, battery or glued components

Lag

I know i made some negative posts on the htc u11 but tbh i love this phone and i was just feeling annoyed by some things.. But i wanted to ask, i expected this phone to be lag free and super fast, yes it is super fast abd smooth but the thing is that it does lag with me and it is noticable. Happens a couple of times a day i think, am i the only one having lag problems? I do have the power saving option on and idk if it's what's causing the phone to lag or not but all i know is it does lag with me and it is unexpected since this phone has htc sense and snapdragon 835. Share your thoughts below

Turn off the power saver. It's not needed with the Snapdragon 835 and it alters the distribution of the load between the clusters. Things that would complete swiftly and thus conserve power on the big cores gets offloaded to the little cores. The kernel isn't optimized to take advantage of the efficiency of the 835. With it being incredibly easy to get 7 hours of SoT, there is no need for the power saver. Somewhere on XDA there's a very detailed explanation as to what the power saver does and why it shouldn't be used unless your phone is about to die but it curbs both clock speeds and shuffles around the load, preferring to not use the big cores at all. It basically abolishes the efficiency of the big.LITTLE premise and often has opposite the intended effect if you're actively using the phone.
If you need optimization, you can use Boost+ to set individual high drain apps up to be run in 1080p, limit background usage, etc. This is much more effective than essentially killing the performance of the phone and gaining little, if any, additional battery life. It can have the opposite effect and in fact did so on the 10.
Think of it like this - the little cluster may take half the power per cycle than the big cluster (I don't know the exact numbers and highly doubt it's anywhere near half but it works for the example). You open an app that would have completed in a single cycle on the big cluster. That same app can take four to five cycles on the little cluster. You've just thrown efficiency out the window.
If you have a lot of background apps misbehaving and a lot of apps constantly syncing, it can be advantageous but I haven't seen any evidence of that since the Snapdragon 820. The 805 in my Nexus 6 benefited from it but my Note 5 with the Exynos 7420 and my 10 with the Snapdragon 820 suffered.

I had freezes on my previous HTC(one m7), and the reason was some crappy game I installed. After removal - no lag at all. Just try and revise your applications and remove ones you have doubts
0 lag. None, Nada, zilch. Either the person who started this post has an app or setting that is causing it or they are intentionally trying to keep people from buying it...Which seems crazy...who would care that much...?

what are those ,,other users"? I think only 5% of the Exynos owners won this lottery. I mean, this is a failed chipset and Sammy doesn't want to recognize this, or at least give us the ability to purchase a Snapdragon version.

35 is not high, to my mind. Around 39 i tend to notice it. But it rarely happens to go that high, usually around 36/37. Maybe if I'm charging and playing it will go high

When Samsung developed the Exynos 2200 it was supposed to power the central core clockspeed at 1.9GHz. After they finalized development (or possibly before they finalized development) they discovered any speed over 1.34 GHz generated unacceptable overheating. Instead of re-engineering the SoC they decide to throttle the crap out of it. In the meantime they've been tampering with the other cores in an attempt to find an acceptable balance. I would submit to date those efforts have failed. Welcome to the wonderful world of Exynos!

make some test please
make factory reset and dont install anything - is it still heating?
disable cellular overnight - is it still heating?
enable cellular, but disable data & wifi - is it still heating?
enable cellular, data off, enable wifi - is it still heating?

And I don't understand why people are still buying devices with Exynos from Samsung..Only because it's a Samsung? Don't get me wrong, I would go instantly to Huawei if they would have again GMS, because I really loved my P30 Pro, but without GMS my only alternative it's Samsung since other brands are having a lot of things that annoy me.

btw, 35 isn't high. my a3 usually heats up at 40-60 (when playing games) and also has an exynos processor (Exynos 7580)
Get Good Guardians and install Thermal Guardian.
It will let you change the thermal profile, like if you are in a hot day or cold place. Also logs all the apps that might warm your device, then you can turn problem apps off or set more battery savings aka less power, aka less temp.
i found when converting .vob to .mp4 on the device it gets very hot, but of course that is quite an intensive task, i would be interested to know how a snapdragon version handles that
Snapdragon!! Very useful to Cook egs, with exynos in the last ten years and for note (with s22) never seen a minimal rise in temperature
