Any idea when z3 is getting lollipop and move to sd card feature?
You will need root. SD fix on PlayStore let you get sd functions
FixSD
There's the FixSD card app in the play store that resolves the issue. But you must be root as the previous poster stated. I can confirm it works great. I'm running 128GB SanDisk. If you're scared about unlocking (as I was) read my posted, I saw no changes at all. Post = "UL Bootloader I see no changes...pics attached"
Please post questions in the Q&A section

The fix in itself is very simple, but needs root indeed. But as it is by design of android that there is no full rw to sdcard you can't really blame sony for not implementing it (even though other manufacturers do have this enabled, and I would love to see it enabled).
The (manual) fix is a change to the following file:
system/etc/permissions/platform.xml
to add <group gid="media_rw" /> in the following location like so:
<permission name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" >
<group gid="sdcard_r" />
<group gid="sdcard_rw" />
<group gid="media_rw" />
</permission>
Afaik all the sd-card fix apps simply do the same but edit the file for you...
5.0 needs apps to sd
I really do hope that apps to sd card can be implemented within 5.0
First time i have had an android phone and i brought the xperia z3 only to find out that my 64gb sd card cannot be used for application installations unless rooted. Im not to sure about the root side but the sony z3 deffinatly nedds to have the option to store and install apps to sd card officially.
Sony has said Lollipop won't arrive until early next year... like Jan/Feb. They will start with the newer phones such as Z3 and then work their way down to the Z.

I totally agree with you. I had a galaxy s4 and it was same in the beginning. But they gave an update in which move to sd card was enabled. Sony should give this option as its very essential for 16gb device users.

Root is not an option for me. I root my devices on which i want to develop apps. For personal use i prefer to have unrooted device with stock features. Thanx for the solution

Ah, in that case I guess it's gonna be nearly impossible that you'll get full sd card access on Lollipop I think

As long as DRM key loss carries through all updates etc and the limited proof we have that losing them does nothing to our phones, which I very much doubt.
I have no intention of unlocking the bootloader on this thing unless it can be completely reversed with all DRM etc in tact as we have absolutely no idea what they may or may not be needed for now or in the future.
I also want a resell value to my phone, and unlocking the bootloader doesn't always guarantee warranty etc will remain in tact.
App devs need to move to the new method. APKs still live on the internal, but they can save assets to the sdcard

I realise this thread is from a while ago but didn't want to start yet another thread on this.
I have installed sdfix and it states there is no need for it as I already have write access (I may have previously installed this app I can't really remember)
My question is, now that I have write access what do I do? How do I install apps to SD, this option is not available to me in the "apps" section even after installing SD fix?
Apps needs this features enabled from the dev side. They decide if you will have it or not.
Guys, sorry if I am repeating something, just to summarize this so I understood you all correctly.
Even though I have in the App Manager for the App MOVE TO SD CARD enabled. (Epic, Sygic bla bla ).
I press the button, it creates the directory on the SD, but the files won't be moved if Rovio or Sygic do not change their application to the new Move Process.
Right now I do have all the applications directories on the External SD (633x Lexar 128GB) which I moved. But they have only the directory structure. No files. Only Google Play Music, music files, but I think that is because the Play Music has also another option of caching the songs which are there.
Meaning that even though there is MOVE TO SD CARD (or checkbox in the SD Card tab) , it means nothing for us.
PS: I am z3c lollipop, but I think this should be same
Hey Guys -
Amongst other devices, I have a rooted Nvidia Shield Tablet which I primarily use for gaming (of course) and love. Recently, I upgraded to Lollipop and soon after even completely reset the tablet by reapplying the recovery image, then upgrading to Lollipop via OTA (since recovery files still haven't yet been updated.)
There's just one main issue I cannot find a solution for: I have many legacy apps / games and for some of them need to have SD Card write access. Take for instance "Star Wars - Jedi Academy." It's a paid app and when downloaded installs a small APK as well as a folder with the Demo version of the PC game's files. The app says if you copy the retail version files to a folder and point it to them, it will play the full game and does - however - these files are 3.5gb therefore I copied to a folder on my SD. When I open the app/game and point it to the SD Card folder (which it sees), it says the target isn't writable.
When Lollipop first came out, I know many apps needed to be upgrade to be able to write to the SD card - due to Storage Access Framework I believe. They must know that some legacy apps probably may never get updated. How are we to use these? I'd think the fix would come in one of the following forms:
- Xposed Add-on (Installer/Framework still not compatible with Lollipop, though )
- Play Store App - Non-official workaround like ones offered for KitKat
- Lucky Patcher modification?
- Some other method which may require root
- A base Android setting I've overlooked
So... does anyone know a method which is currently out and working? Thanks!
I recently wrote a post about this. Tl;dr you need to reformat your card as ntfs to get it to work, and then do some craziness with the Google Storage Access Framework on command.
Wait a second. Can't you write a simple app like SD fix to repair the way the SD card is accessed?

Not sure it will solve your problem, but when I first upgraded to Lollipop I could not write anything to my sd card. Someone else mentioned that if you install Folder Mount, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.devasque.fmount, upon first launch it would recognize the issue and offer to fix it. I tried it (used Folder Mount on my old Hisense Sero Pro 7 for a long time so I trust it), and sure enough it works great. Then just uninstall it once you've rebooted. End of problem for me...
Easy fix. If you have root use SD Card Fix by NextApp
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix
Gives you read write back to your ex SD.

this fix did it for me without installing any app:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44370296#post44370296
Wow - Thanks for all the replies guys! I got it to work!
After reading each, I decided to first try w.0.o.t's suggestion which is a direct but simple edit of a system file instead of installing an app for which I don't know what it does exactly. The example in the link he sent was a bit different as it was for 4.3, so here's what I ended up doing to make it work for 5.0:
1. Opened Root Explorer Pro on my tablet
2. Browsed to the file "/etc/permissions/platform.xml"
3. Copied it to the root of my internal storage (sdcard0) for backup
4. Held down touch on it and choose to Edit in Text Editor. It asked if I wanted to mount volume as RW to which I replied yes
5. Located the section "WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" and made the edits listed in the "EDITS" section below these steps
6. Saved file, held touch on filename again, went to permissions, and verified that it was set to "644" - it was
7. Restarted tablet
EDITS
Original Data in permissions.xml
Code:
<permission name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" >
<group gid="sdcard_r" />
<group gid="sdcard_rw" />
</permission>
Edited Data in permissions.xml What I changed the above values to...
Code:
<permission name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" >
<group gid="sdcard_rw" />
<group gid="sdcard_rw" />
<group gid="media_rw" />
</permission>
Notes when editing:
- Make sure that you change "r" to "rw" on the first listed group - may easily be missed when coming above two
- When typing extra line, my tablet auto-corrected the word "gid" and changed it to "god" without me noticing. After rebooting and it not working, I went back and saw the error, fixed it, rebooted, then it worked
To test, I opened FX File Editor and browsed to a file on my SDCard which I previously could not delete. This time, I was able to delete it without issue
Thanks again guys!
glad you sorted it out.

No root is needed.
It requires a computer, and probably for you to eject your SD card from your shield and insert it into the computer in a different way, so it's recognized by Windows Explorer.
So you plug in the SD card as mentioned.
Open it up in Windows Explorer. (This usually comes up when you insert the card, but if it doesn't you can usually open the Start Menu or Start Screen and type Explorer to find it.)
Copy everything you want to save out of the card.
Right click in an empty space, then choose Format...
Format the thing as NTFS. Turning off Quick Format probably won't hurt. Don't bother with any other options.
Cross fingers. Try the card again.

No luck whatsoever. I'm getting the same issue as the original poster. I've tried with both ES File Explorer and FX and Documents crashes as soon as I select the SD Card. The SD card is in NTFS format, would exFAT format make a difference?

I have tried using ES File Explorer on my LG G3 running Android 5.0.1 and I was able to write to the SD card. So at this point its an issue with the tablet, which is immensely infuriating since I can't install games to the SD car properly, which is the main thing this tablet is for isn't it?! I really want to play some Hearthstone on it!
You know, at this point, any change in format might make a difference. I'm scratching my head as to why you need to explicitly provided Storage access to ES File Explorer, maybe it just no longer assumes it has the permissions (stock Samsung apps are okay with writing anywhere and preliminary documentation about OEM installed apps said the same thing).
The good news is that I've never destroyed an SD card by formatting formatting it. Go nuts. Try things other than what I suggested... At this point there's a good chance I'm missing something. And I'm sorry for botching my suggestions.
Here's an idea. Between switching formats and maybe allocation sizes (I'm leaning towards trying the smallest one), try formatting your SD card in the system's Storage settings.
Here's another: try the SD Formatter application available here. Raspberry Pi SD cards are sometimes as cranky as Shield ones.
http://www.raspberrypi.org/help/noobs-setup/
I got it to work! I used the SD Formatter you suggested, although it only let me format it to FAT32. I did see some other threads though that said something about renaming the SD card too, so I decided to rename the volume label to "Shield_SD", and I'm guessing that this is the problem, as I never named the SD card. I noticed also that on my LG G3 that the external SD card had a name that was a bunch of random characters, but I could write to it.

Hello, i am starting this post, since there were a number of post already made similar to this, but none could provide a valid solution.
U see i want some files and documents be transferred from my phone memory to memory card. My mobile is Samsung Galaxy Core 2 SM-G355H
I understand Samsung has disabled those feature after releasing Android 4.2.2 Kitkat and above i suppose.
But i read a lot about rooting and what is it.
The main question is how can i achieve to copy/paste files and documents from phone to SSD card.
I hope my question is simple, i could really use some expert opinion here.
Hello, i understand that samsung has restricted the access of SD card from Android 4.2 and above i guess again.
So is rooting a solution for that.
Please i need some suggestion. I have downloaded all the tools needed to root, all i need is some confirmation, i tried posting in there
blog, but they refuse to reply.
I want to know, is rooting device a one time process, if i need to factory recover, will the rooted device still stay in effect.
Do i need to re-root the device.
Give me some suggestion or give me a green light.

Rooting is a solution for this fix, but not always needed.
If u root your device you can use many apps to fix sdcard access ( root access needed ) like SDFix.
Well next thing ( without rooting ) is if u use stock or custom recovery, you can change or owerwritten platform.xml in /system/etc/permissions/ via update zip ( can made it 4 your version ) this is a way without beeing rooted.
the changed lines :
Code:
<permission name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" >
<group gid="sdcard_r" />
<group gid="sdcard_rw" />
</permission>
Code:
<permission name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE">
<group gid="sdcard_r"/>
<group gid="sdcard_rw"/>
<group gid="media_rw"/>
</permission>
I can make the update zip for you to owerwritten the default values only for this file, so you will be able to access and copy files to/from SDCard without root.
It's up to you what will you do ...

Yes i am using stock Recovery to choose the option of updating from the external storage.
I don't any other way.
Sorry, actually i hadn't copied your file to the SD Card, which i did later and ran the update.
However, i still cannot perform copy/delete option from the device.
I found out one site which specifically tells how to perform root for my device Samsung Galaxy Core 2 SM-G355H
Here is the site, do u think its the right way to do it.
How To Root The Samsung Galaxy Core 2 (SM-G355H)
Hello again, so i rooted my device from the link i provided. But when i try to delete some application files from the device,
it still doesn't allow it to do.
What am i doing wrong here, after rooting a application called Kinguser 3.4.057 got installed, it gives the permission to have access
for root permission , backup permission etc.
But i can't figure it out, how do i access my SD Card (8 GB) , i really need to delete some files from the card.
Any instruction from you. How do i do that.

The FS /system and other too is/are readonly (ro) in device, so if u want to delete or copy inside this partition u must change it to rw (readwrite), it's better for you to use some Explorer root based application like FX Explorer with root addon ...
If u have copied the update zip to extSdCard and run the update procedure in stock recovery U should be able to copy/edit/delete files on your extSdCard - Card if the install were sucessfull.
For a check: Install app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix and check again things now U'r rooted. Regards

Did you reboot?? If not, apply it again and reboot.
If it still didn't work, get a root explorer and go to system/etc/permissions and taka a backup of platform.xml (just copy and paste it in a place you know) then edit the original platform.xml:
under WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE add <group gid="media_rw" />
it should look like this:
<permission name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" >
<group gid="sdcard_r" />
<group gid="sdcard_rw" />
<group gid="media_rw" />
</permission>
Then all you have to is reboot.
hope this helped.
Hello
I have lollipop rom with root available, and i like to use folder mount apps to move data and obb from internal memory.
But in lollipop, i cant get the sd write fix, it says not compatible or error, i try several sd fix apps from play store, but its keep it error, i try to search in google, but the answer is for another phone.
Maybe someone can help my problem, thank you so much for the answer
you need to root your device and use SD fix from play store.
otherwise, wait for the app developer to update their app

You can test this:But make a Backup from your Rom or platform.xml
in System/etc/permissions/platform.xml
and in -<permission name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE">
add the Line <group gid="media_rw"/>
that helps in the in System/etc/permissions/platform.xml
