[Q] titanium freezes trying to restore? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S6

I hope I am just doing something stupid, but....I cant get titanium to restore from my backups on my Verizon S6.
Once rooted, I backed up all my apps and data and archived copies of them on my server.
When I try to restore any app that I had removed, titanium just freezes at "Restoring App+data" screen...no progress.
If I reboot the app shows up in drawer, but is fails...reporting " Unfortunately "" has stopped.
The app I wish to restore is the voicemail app, because I lost voicemail notifications....I believe it is the culprit.
I have tried other system apps as well....none will restore.
When I force a reboot, I do get a screen that "android is upgrading", it is finding some of the restored app. On boot it shows in drawer....but will not run.
Any ideas?
Been using TB for years...and purchased it the day I learned it existed. Never had a problem before.
Have tried the suggestions in the help section of the TB app......no difference.

Same here. just tried it to see if it would work but it sat at the same spot for about an hour. i rebooted and have yet to try again. Want to do a factory reset, but would like to restore. Maybe a fresh start on clean rom will be good for me though.

Same here. 0% progress and nothing. Rebooted 3 times, nothing.

Its strange that only we three have posted on this issue!?!

I have tried many different settings, still no luck.
On another note, I was able to convert one user app to a system app and it runs. (WiFi Analyzer).
Also, tried converting a system app, Dual Clock, to a user app. Didn't work.......it just disappeared like it was uninstalled.
Cannot be restored.

This is my last work day of the week so I am hoping to toy with it over the next few days. Surprised it is only us though.

Let us know if you find anything!

Will do.

I'm on Clean Rom and have no issues using a backup I did while on rooted stock.

I'm on rooted stock and just did a backup, removed an app, then restored the app and it's data with no issue. Wonder what the limiting factor is here? Very interesting.
edit: somebody check menu > preferences > backup folder location. Mine's set to storage/emulated/0/TitaniumBackup

So let us know how it goes when you try the directory I listed.

Could not map the given root

Try not selecting the first app it's trying to restore. Leave the rest

I am not sure what you mean but I am only trying to restore visual voicemail so that is the only one I checked off. The reason I am trying to restore it is because ever since I removed it I get no notification that there is a voicemail. I am looking for the cassette notification in the upper left.
I am new to this and have been banging my head and searching for a remedy. Any ideas on how to just fet the damn icon back when I get a voicemail?

Yes. Then redo your backup and try restoring again.

And again, I'm sorry but I'm new. This location would be in Titanium of My Files? just don't want to screw it up.
---------- Post added at 02:09 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:04 AM ----------
It shows 450 backups under storage/emulated/legacy/TitaniumBackup
---------- Post added at 02:19 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:09 AM ----------
Ok...Found under Backup storage location 3 folders.
1) A red This folder is not writable.
2) 0
3) legacy
They both appear to have the same files in them but when I click on 0 then TitaniumBackup the line to the right of DETECT! goes to /storage/emulated/legacy/TItanium Backup. I can't figure out how to make it stay with /storage/emulated/0/TItanium Backup

Be careful here.
I just told TB to change the folder from /legacy/titanium backup to /0/titanium backup and it said it was moving all of my files to the new folder.
They are all gone now.....titanium cant even find them with a search.

Has anyone gotten Titanium Backup to restore apps from 2.2?

None of the processing modes work for me, and I get "parse error" when using the interactive mode. Any ideas?
i was able to restore succesfully
Hmm. Maybe it's because I downloaded straight from my Dropbox. I'll try directly copying the files.
Edit: That did the trick.
Any ideas why I might be getting a problem where I select an App, it says 'What would you like to restore?' and there are no buttons underneath to select App or Data?
Hi all,
Yes it should work with 2.3, I've already got positive reports, including a couple from G themselves
Parse error means an apk backup is corrupted. I'll do some additional tests on the Dropbox download code, since it might be related.
Thanks!

This happens when you have a data-only backup, and you can't restore it because the app is not installed anymore. The typical case is system apps that are gone in your new Rom.
Okay, it looks like I backed them up wrong I guess. Will have another go, thanks.
I tried again, still not working...
Each app has 3 files in the folder. Some apps I can install from the market and then re-apply the data, but others wont (K-9 Mail for example)
Any ideas?
This is very strange, you should definitely be able to restore the data from any backup, as long as the corresponding app is installed...

Indeed, there was a serious problem with the Dropbox download code. That's the last time I'm taking Dropbox's sample code for granted. It's fixed in 3.6.5 (and the problem existed only for *downloading*, not for uploading).
Thanks !
I can restore app data if I manually install the app first. I used to be able to batch backup all my apps and then batch restore them all. Why can't I from 2.2 to 2.3?

Probably something wrong with your source, in this case, the apps and data. I've had no issue at all besides updating busybox when I first launched the app. I just transfered the TB folder from my computer to the phone and did a restore, everything worked fine.

Am having difficulties too. Restoring from a Desire (Leedroid 2.2f) to a nice new Desire HD (Leedroid 1.51). Have even tried to restore from the original SD card, but Titanium on the HD never sees / recognises the backup made on the desire. And yes, the backup folders in titanium are set to the same name and path (default). The Titanium app versions are different - The newest version is on the HD and I understand that it is meant to support backups from previous versions. I can see all the backup files in the backup folder too. Any ideas or advice would be appreciated.

Wouldn't that be 300 minutes at 1 per minute...?
I think it's 0.1 mins/app, or about 6 seconds each based on your time and apps.

Am not using the same gmail address for the new phone - Does Titanium try and be very clever and link the backup to a user or a specific device?

[Q] Cyanogen 10.1 not working with Titanium Backup

I decided to go back go Cyanogen and am having problems getting Titanium Backup to work properly.
It doesn't appear to be able to read my SD card. No apps show that have been backed up. And when I press the search icon, I get the error "The current backup location ("/mnt/extSdCard/TitaniumBackup") cannot be accessed.". I've tried /storage/sdcard1 and also /extSdCard, but none seem to work.
Any ideas out there?

Thanks for trying! I hope someone else can help! I'm pretty much stuck right now until I get this this working. Nothing seems to make a difference.
Okay, this is weird. It's working now. Even though I rebooted multiple times, and tried every other option I could find, it just wouldn't work. Now all of a sudden it's working. Go figure!
Problem Solved
I used system app mover from play store to convert TB to a system app
This solved the issue. I had the exact same problem on Avatar and Pacman. So do that and it'll be all good.

I've never had problems restoring data between roms, but I've read many warnings against restoring apps when changing roms.
Also, when changing between very similar roms, you often don't need to wipe data, unless you are "downgrading" to a version compiled from older source.
You can always do a /system partition format and flash a new rom, then see if it will boot without issues. I've also be able to selectively wipe data for problematic apps to fix them.
I really don't like the nuclear option of factory resets, just because it can take hours to bring a phone back to a state similar to the state it was in, and it can affect saved states for some apps that attached to the device ID.

Original problem
I have been having problems restoring apps with titanium backup and so far no one has been able to find the solution, I couldn't find a solution on google and titanium backup support isn't responding to my support request. Anyways, I'm trying to restore apps from pandasa123's unofficial cyanogenmod to matrixzone's unofficial cyanogenmod. When I restore on the free version it opens install window and then when it says installing it changes to app not installed. Suspected problem apps are Bloons TD 5, Drunken Wrestlers and Star Wars: Commander. When I had the free version, it seems after trying to restore drunkin wrestlers and it says app not installed then all the apps after say app not installed except a few like google authenticator. I tried again with the paid version and it still got stuck restoring things like drunkin wrestlers, bloons td 5, star wars commander. I have already tried the troubleshooting steps in tibu and have tried multiple times to restore. I have also tried older versions no luck. I could successfully restore those apps when I went from 4.4.4 to 5.0.
Also would there be any work around to manually restore the apps? Any other backup apps that are good?
Device: Samsung Galaxy S3 SGH-I747M
Rooted: Yes
Anyone?
Please, anyone? I don't want to be stuck with this rom.

And one final tip that i use.........when setting up a ROM from scratch, do not sign in to the Google account until AFTER you have RESTORED all the user Apps with Titanium as the Market will try to restore all your apps from your Market user history, which is OK but will conflict with your BATCH RESTORE using TItanium Backup.

Thanks, I don't restore any of my apps from the play store (unchecked "All Apps" in the restore screens on initial setup of the rom) but do have some games connected to Google Play Games. Would this solution still possibly work?
It still doesn't restore properly and it seems to also get stuck on a new game I downloaded called LogoMania too. I didn't add a Google account at setup until I had to go to the play store to download tibu and tibu pro but made sure auto restore was off in settings. I also unchecked the malware detection in google settings and saved the apps to my internal instead of external sd but still no luck.

So in order to only restore data, I would:
1. Install the app from Google Play
2. In tibu, do a batch restore and select "data only" instead of "apps+data"
Is that correct?

Yes.
One important step before you restore is the verify the backups. Go into TB->batch->Verify Backups. See if everything is okay with no errors.
Also, remember some apps may not be compatible with your upgraded Android version.

I verify every time. Also, I'm on android 5.0.2 already trying to get to another 5.0.2 rom I believe.
One more thing I forgot to mention: if you want to recover an app, try to recover it without data. Recovering data for apps between CM versions, or even app versions, can cause headaches sometimes (especially Google apps).
Also, TB has a website with help. Maybe there is an answer in the docs to help you.
Thanks guys, it worked!

Titanium Backup troubleshooting

So I have been using TB for years now, since back in the day that I had the HTC Hero and I have never had a problem with it until now. There are some certain apps that it will just not restore no matter what I try. It begins restoring the others just fine but when it gets to the same exact apps, it just stops and freezes.
I am using the Restore missing apps with data option.
I have tried deleting all backups and backing up again. I have tried verifying my backups various times. I have also tried not using batch restore for those specific apps (Going directly to that app and restoring just that one app with and without data, and it just hangs as well).
I am using SuperSU with my binary updated and busy box installed. I also changed the application processing mode to indirect. Is anyone else having this same issue? Its not on one specific rom, it happens on every rom I flash may it be stock based or aosp. I have exactly 112 apps backed up so when I have to force stop TB, and go back to uncheck the apps that are not restoring various times to restore the rest, it sucks especially since I am very picky with things working as they should.
Apps it will not restore:
Tippy Tipper
Subway Surfer
Nimble Quest
Battlefriends at sea gold
Commander (Star wars)
Instasize
If anyone has any idea what may be causing this and how to fix it, please let me know. Thank you beforehand!
What kernel do you have installed?
Stock CM that came with the official CM12 rom.
But either way, I have had this issue on every rom I have flashed.

If you go to the play store are you able to install them? I have had a few that i can't restore, but once I've installed them from the play store I can restore the backed up data. I haven't been able to figure out why some restore and others don't (unless they aren't compatible with the DPI and the Android version I've found a few that when you look them up in the play store they are not compatible)

I have been able to install them from the play store without any issue, I just can't restore them using TB no matter what I try. And its weird that its the same apps every time. So it is something that those apps have that does not get along. Can someone manipulate the situation and check on their end? I am running Illusion (Latest version from the 18th) and latest version of TB. See if you can restore those specific apps backed up from any rom.
Try changing the mount namespace separation setting in super su. I got that message when I first installed titanium it was a warning I don't know what it does or if it will fix your problem
I realized today that when backing up the specific apps after deleting all backups (Fresh backup), it rushes through those specific apps like as if it doesn't want to back it up but it doesn't give me an error message.
some apps don't like restoring to a different rom than they were made on.
Have you tried using the option in TB to create an update.zip you can then flash?
Hi there in desperation I come to this thread. Ive tried everything thats suggested in this thread and more.
TT backup Pro home page shows all necessary items like Root etc checked.
Problems with Pro:
1..Nandroid restore crashes immediately on item selection eg as soon as Menu Item Nandroid is selected Titanium crashes.
2..As mentioned by others, some apps wont restore; TT sits there in restore mode with nothing happening. This is on several apps.
3..Menu/Backup data to XML Bookmarks=yes Messages=yes Call log=crash/'Unfortunately, TT bup has stopped.'
4..Several other annoyances in reliability but the above are most important.
I have politely asked Titanium for support but they dont bother answering. After a few days waiting I gave the app a feedback of 1 on Play thinking that would get some response but no!
In 20 years of computer work, I have never had a software supplier with such a terrible support policy, and the feedback page for this app supports this comment.
Im sorry to have to come to this forum asking for help, but the Titanium folks leave me no choice.
As an aside I also use 'Backup Your Mobile' which IMHO is better at restoring settings and reliably restores apps with settings at no cost if you can put up with the ads.
Kind regards,
Alistair.
Since this post and no replies I have submitted 2 more support requests with TTBup support which is done via a web page interface. I even supplied a small video showing the problem. Alogcat does not report any errors which is odd.
Still no replies from TTBup support.

Titanium Backup - Android 11

Has anyone else tried backing up all the new "apps" with TB? I installed my wife's P3 (upgrade with flash-all minus -w) and have no issues at all except that media storage "app" will not backup. It never moves and even after 30 minutes of waiting crashes the system to the point of needing a reboot even if TB is force closed. All other new stuff backed up fine.

It gives me the same failure and I notice that it is mostly because of the root that app is handled with that I am waiting for the root to be able to use it in the betas if it could be rooted but in this version I am suffering the same as you

Not sure what you mean by "root that app is handled with." Canary Magisk is the only root that works on 11, and I wasn't even on the beta 11.

Of course, if in all the betas I even solved it, I already have root, a youtuber who is dedicated to pixels in all android betas made him root and today I root for pixel 3 and I have it

You mean the media storage app backed up? That is the only one failing for me. I just have to remember to unselect it.

Thank God for XDA.
I think the answer to why Titanium Backup can't backup Media Storage is in this article:
Storage updates in Android...
I just can't figure out where. LOL
Have a great day!

Not sure I understand your question, but if Media Storage is included in apps to be backed up you need to force close TB to even make the phone respond to much of anything since it is hung in the backup process that never completes. Either way, you need to reboot completely to function normally again.

Now I get your question. Fortunately, that has not happened to me. I have not had to reinstall or even clear cache/data in TB. The only thing I have done different is I've hit the home button that still responded (once I considered it frozen) and then opened TB in settings and force closed it before the reboot. Everything was fine after that.

Fixed it! Would you share the, detailed, steps needed to skip Media storage?

No real steps. Just uncheck it from the list of "apps" that are checked when you go to batch actions-all/[run]backup new user+system apps & newer versions. Then execute the backup.

I thought I had to create a label to skip a file. lol
Done!
This happened to me too. No update yet for Titanium backup that fixes it.

I think this might cause some issues for Titanium backup:
If your app targets Android 11, it cannot access the files in any other app's data directory, even if the other app targets Android 8.1 (API level 27) or lower and has made the files in its data directory world-readable.

Is this issue fixed now, or not?
Can't run my backup, because it hangs @ Backup "Media Storage", how to fix it?
I use LineageOS 18.1 on my Samsung Galaxy S10+
Same here. Pixel 3 running latest update from March. Titanium freezes on Media Storage.
I get the same hang on Media Storage App on Pixel 4a (5G) with Magisk 22 stable.
Any workaround yet? Also, has anyone actually tested a backup and restore of an app? I read elsewhere that the restores are hit or miss.
I got the same problem here on a 1+9 Pro with stock (rooted) Android 11.
Titanium Backup Will always get stuck on Media Storage 11.
