I recently bricked my D801 attempting to restore a CloudyG3 (kitkat) nandroid backup over a modified stock Lollipop ROM. I'm thinking it was because I didn't flash the appropriate KK baseband first. Is that so? Why do I need to do that? Does the nandroid backup not include the baseband? So if I had flashed the baseband first would the nandroid restore been uneventful?
If somebody could walk me through these scenarios, I would appreciate it. What I want to avoid is restoring KK stock, rooting, using KK autorec to install TWRP, updating TWRP with Blastagator's newest version, installing a new ROM, restoring apps and data from TIB, reconfiguring all system data. I want to be able to use nandroid backups to avoid all those extra steps.
Scenario 1 (as above): Going from any variation of LP stock back to CloudyG3 KK. What do I do?
Scenario 2: Going from Cloudy to AOSP-based ROM having made a nandroid backup of Cloudy. What do I do?
Scenario 3: Going from AOSP ROM back to Cloudy, hopefully using the Cloudy backup. What do I do?
I have a JDI panel btw so it's imperative I avoid white lines. I understand that using Blastagator's TWRP will help avoid that problem because it auto-switches. I also understand that many ROMs (such as Cloudy) also choose an appropriate kernel automatically. Do all/most AOSP ROMs install a kernel? If not what do I do? If so are most of them auto-switching?
I'm not hard bricking this phone again if I have to use Cloudy KK until I sell it. There are worse things. But I'd really like to be able to go back and forth using nandroid backups as I have with other devices.
Thanks,
Ron

Hello I am new to this forum. I would like to ask if somebody did what I need to do.
Firs I want to say that my nexus s is rooted with the latest CWM (or at least latest enough to install 4.4). First I installed 4.3 from slimroms. One month ago I installed 4.4.2 again from slimroms. All is fine except that with 4.4 I have BIG battery drain. I am thinking of rolling back to 4.3. But I want to do a complete backup of the OS with the apps and settings - all. In case I don't like 4.3 I want a .zip image so I can install back my backup and everything will be just like before. So is this possible or not? I know there are apps that can do a backup but how deep is this? Is it only the apps, or the apps and settings, or u can do only OS image? CWM can do backup too but since I've red it does backup only for the OS -no apps no settings.
Any tips will be appreciated.
Nandroid backup will do...
BACK UP then FULL WIPE then INSTALL
To restore backup...
FULL WIPE then RESTORE
Thanks I will take a look.
If i clean flash a new Rom but restore the data part from a backup i did earlier from another rom from recovery will it work? Im using TWRP recovery.
ive always had mixed results on this. if youre going from a TW ROM to an AOSP or AOKP rom, likely not. If you use TiB and backup your apps and their respective data, and restore them via the same method, that 99.9999% of the time works
I'm considering trying out a different ROM on my T-Mobile Galaxy S2. I've done quite a bit of modifications to my stock 4.1 ROM.
I made a complete backup of my phone using TWRP recovery (both system & data backed up).
Now, if i decide that after trying someother ROMS, i decide to revert back to the stock ROM i was using, can i just restore my backup with TWRP Recovery and all my settings, apps, screens, etc. everying will be restored just like it was before i put another ROM on?
I've been very hesitant to try this for fear of needing to reconfigure everything again.
I assume everythig restores as original but i need confirmation.
Thanks.

Yes, it does....if you do a full backup...
And by the way, questions belong in the Q and A section....cheers!
Hi,
I'm running CM 10.2, and using TWRP 2.7.1.2 Recovery.
I think that when I was "cleaning" my phone prior to installing ROMs, I was a little too thorough, since based upon my poor 3G/4G performance/coverage, I guess that my PRL list is pretty minimal.
I gather that the procedure to fix this is roughly:
Make a Nandroid backup from Recovery
install a stock ROM
update to latest PRL
Restore the Nandroid backup
But I don't understand some of the fine details. In particular:
When preparing the Nandroid backup, what options does one use?
What sort of "wipe" if any, does one perform at this point prior to installing the stock ROM
HOW does one install the stock ROM image asanti_c_sprint-user-4.1.2-9.8.2Q-122_XT897_FFW-5-6-release-keys-cid9.xml.zip ?! It looks a little different than custom ROMs
After updating the PRL, what sort of "wipe" should I perform prior to recovering from my Nandroid backup? I'd like to be thorough, but not so thorough that I wipe out the PRL update. Where does that PRL list reside?
Does the Nandroid backup include the ROM images which I flashed? (CM 10.2 and the corresponding GAPPS) If not, then in what order does one flash ROM images and recover my Nandroid backup?
TIA ...
1. Doesn't matter, whatever you feel you need to restore. At a minimum backup system. Backup data if you want your data saved...
2. None, if you use RSD Lite to reinstall stock it will wipe ALL. Everything will be back to stock (including recovery).
3. RSD Lite.
4. PRL List should not be wipe-able from recovery, AFAIK. Factory reset should be fine.
5. The backup will include whatever was currently running on your phone - CM, gapps, any installed applications, etc. Simply restore your backup, no order of operations here. Of course you'll need to reflash TWRP in order to restore your backup (again, flashing with RSD Lite resets the ENTIRE phone, including custom recovery).
If you had taken a backup of the stock setup, you could skip the whole RSD Lite crap and just restore your stock setup, download the PRL, and restore your CM setup. For future reference, step #1 after getting custom recovery is always always ALWAYS take a backup of your working stock setup before making any other changes.
Thanks for your detailed response. As a Mac user, I believe that RSD Lite isn't a viable option for me. I do have another Motorola Photon Q phone with the stock ICS image, but don't know whether that is helpful in this case.
I guess that I need a strategy using adb, fastboot and TWRP. Thanks ...

The stock backup from that other Q would work. Just do a factory wipe and restore 'system' only from that other Q.
E6683 (dual)
Stock Malaysia ROM (MM 305)
Rooted with rooted stock kernel
TWRP is 3.0.2.0
I've had this setup for months working nicely.
I did a full TWRP backup, tried N, didn't like it (for now) and so did a restore from the backup. Following a restore, it is stuck in Recovery! As in, when I reboot System, it just bounces back to Recovery.
I could try putting stock MM back on and then restoring, but before I do, are there any quicker tricks to getting the TWRP backup working again?
TIA
m
You should have switched back to MM before restoring your backup.
There are no other way around you have to switch back to THE SAME VERSION OF MM you were using during the backup.
Don't try this in the future you could brick your phone

Interesting... thank you. I would estimate I've done a TWRP restore across all phones perhaps 500 times. At a guess, I'd estimate 80% between the same version, so maybe 100 between versions. On this particular phone, this may be the first time I've tried it - I forget, I do so many. So, I'm intrigued: why? Or to put it another way: do you know what it is that TWRP fails to back up successfully or indeed restore successfully that causes this problem in the first place?
EDIT: I restored the MM stock rom (re rooted) and restored the TWRP backup and it worked fine - i'm back on MM.
