[Q] Slow when connected to wifi - Nexus 5 only - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

No matter how much I mess with the settings, or what Lollipop ROM I use, the wifi on my Nexus 5 is unbearably slow. I think it is from the Lollipop upgrade.
My Chromebook, Macbook, PC, wife's iPhone all have fast internet on Wifi.
This is not just my home wifi, it is any wifi network I connect to. So it is my phone.
I have read of others having wifi issues. Is there any fix to this?

I figured it out finally, after a week of searching. Of course right after I finally make a post lol.
I disabled wifi ipv6 on my Nexus 5 and now wifi works blazing fast.
Hopefully Google fixes this issue soon as all my other devices work with ipv6 just fine.

[Q] iPhone tether to Xoom Wifi

I know this topic seems similar to some. But it's not exactly the same.
I am trying to use my iPhone to tether to the new Xoom WIFI model. My tethering app used in iPhone is MyWi
I read the forum and found that Xoom WIFI doesn't support Adhoc. This is probably the reason why I cannot do the internet tethering.
Does anyone know how you can use iPhone to do the internet tethering to Xoom WIFI?
Will this Adhoc problem be solved by our developers here? If so, I could probably wait.
If I cannot find a solution, I have to return this device. I tried Xoom 3G, it supports Adhoc. This is just a bad move from Motorola to disable the Adhoc support on the Wifi model.
Not sure with the iPhone. I can tether from my atrix to the wifi Xoom, but I have the tethering plan.
The 3g xoom does not support adhoc either, you are somehow misinformed.
I am 100% sure that it can be enabled however.

At the moment, the Xoom does not support connection to an ad-hoc network. However, it can be tethered via bluetooth, so if your iPhone can do bluetooth tethering, you should be able to connect.
There has been some discussion of enabling the ad-hoc capability in the development forum, if I recall (it is capable, but either locked or not yet implemented or something), so you may want to check there for any updates.
Im using MyFi in Bluetooth mode and it works great with the Xoom.
You just need to pair the two, like any Bluetooth device and then in MyWi enable bluetooth, then on the xoom under blutooth click the wrench next to the iphone and select tether - Thats it.

Thank you. I tried. It will paired but it won't connect. When I hit the tethering in Xoom.. it will say tethered and then lose connection again. Any idea?
Thanks again
Here's the thread on tethering the iPhone to the Xoom 3G. I followed it and it works flawlessly. I use TetherMe on the iPhone and have no problems. I can even connect the phone to the car stereo (as handsfree) AND use the internet on the Xoom simultaneously. FYI - I have NOT activated 3G with Verizon.
Hope that helps!

Thank you. I finally get it to work using Bluetooth tethering. I used Tetherme from Cydia. The connection speed is slow though (AT&T), I will do more test to see if it is caused by the bluetooth connection.
Thank you all for the valuable inputs.
No problem! We're all in the same boat here. And there's always the "thanks" button

Just noticed that. I clicked all the Thanks button. Good luck ^^
something weird, I have a factory unlocked iphone 4 (with no jailbreak) and I bought a xoom wifi expecting to have trouble pairing to the iphone 4 hotspot based on this thread.
I was testing trying to pair them via bluetooth with the original iphone 4 hotspot option before trying the jailbreak programs bluetooth method. As I was testing this I noticed my xoom displayed my iphone 4 wifi hotspot network name in the wifi networks, so my xoom sees my iphone 4 wifi hotspot and is able to connect to it, i don´t know why but it does.
So maybe my iphone 4 model MC605ZP is not using ad-hoc or my xoom is seeing an ad-hoc network....all i know is a I´m very happy!!
Edit: It seems IOs 4.3 hotspot is in fact Infrastructure so is not that weird lol...
Thanks for the help mate. I can't find the 'thank you' button, I'm posting this reply instead.
Success without Jailbreaking on 3GS
Just got my Xoom from Telstra, took SIM and put into my iPhone 3GS and wanted to tether the iphone to the Xoom.
I was wholly expecting to have to jailbreak as per previous posts, but it worked great out of the box.
Step 1. Put Xoom into Airplane mode
Step 2. Turn on Bluetooth in Xoom
Step 3. Turn on Hotspot on iPhone
Step 4. Pair iphone with Xoom using Bluetooth. It should say paired and not connected ( once off activity - should stick )
Step 5. On Xoom, press spanner icon on the iPhone connection and select Internet Access
Step 6. Browse away
Each time you switch Hotspot on iPhone On you need to manually reconnect to Internet on Bluetooth settings in Xoom. Bit of a pain but minimal.
Interestingly, I can turn on WiFi also while in Airplane mode.......you can't use a Xoom for phone based calls so intrigues me what this mode actually does appart from being a single switch for turning BT and WIFI off together.
Xoom is running Android 3.1
iPhone is running iOS 4.3.5
No other stuff loaded on either device that would assist this in any way.

Internet connection dropping out on wifi

I just received my Nexus 5 today. Got it all set up and I have noticed that the internet connection kind of drops off when I'm on Wifi. I have full bars, but there will be no data. Josh reported similar behavior in his review model on The Verge.
I can't tell if it's a wifi specific issue or not yet. I turned off the "save battery" option under wifi and it's still doing it. The phone will simply stop receiving data in any app. It's not my router. My other devices work fine. I am rooted and do have Adaway installed, but this doesn't affect my Moto X or Galaxy Note 3.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

I've been trying to look at current wireless issues and this one is a little new.
So far (No tethering on Sprint - problems with some T-Mo) and that it doesn't see 2.4Ghz channels past 11 and that it can't see some 5ghz channels either.
I can confirm I have this issue as well, I have got my N5 now for 2 days and the problem started yesterday. I have 2 broadband connection at home and cannot receive data on either router, It was working fine until yesterday when the problem started. I have restarted the device several times to no avail. Am not sure why this is happening , do I have to send this back anyone?
I would play around with the router settings if anything.
See if your router is doing 2.4 ghz or 5 ghz.
DO all possibilities before resorting to the exchange.
Oh god, the Nexus 4 had this problem also. Was something with the Qualcomm-drivers. My Nexus 5 picks up notifications much faster, but sometimes I notice a delay for a few minutes (2/3 minutes), with an app like WhatsApp - if it hasn't been in use for a while. With the Nexus 4, I sometimes received my notifications like 30-45 minutes later.

My router is currently set to auto between 2.4 and 5ghz. Also I have had issues with phone being stuck on edge or sometimes just stuck on gprs and it happens mostly just when I need Internet access. Google is disappointing.
And am at work now and the wifi that was working okay yesterday has now stopped working ... I think this has to go back, such a shame.
I can confirm I have the same Wi-Fi dropping issues on my Nexus 5.
Yes, quite a few threads here describing this same problem. Hopefully a mod will join them soon. I too experience this issue. Someone noted Nexus 10 had that problem at launch which Google fixed shortly after with a software update. I noticed Google support forums also have this reported. Fingers crossed for a quick fix from Google!

Brand New Nexus 5 Doesn't Connect To Home Wi-Fi [URGENT]

I bought a nexus 5 to replace my galaxy s4 which died a couple of days ago.
My home router is a Netgear D6300 and everything (pc, tv and phones such as iphone, samsung and nokia can connect just fine).
My nexus 5 was delivered today and i spent the last 5 hours to get it working with my wifi but NOTHING worked (and, i'm not joking, i got to the point of almost throwing it out of the window).
I tried enabling SSID broadcasting, changing "security options", changing channels, disabling 5ghz network, i also enabled the guest network with no protection but nothing worked.
The only thing i noticed was the when using particular channels (5-6-7) the phone would say "connecting" for a few seconds but then it would go back to "saved, protected with wpa/wpa2".
I also changed some wifi settings on my phone (i disabled wifi optimization and i forced the phone to use the 2.4 ghz network only)
Sometimes it stays on "saved....." and doesn't even seem to try to connect.
After a while i tried creating an hotspot with an iphone 5s and my nexus connected in a second and everything was working.
So the problem should be in my router settings but i already tried everything (and besides everything else but the nexus works just fine).
I'm really desperate because i use this phone for work and i need to get this working asap.
I also managed to update to android 4.4.4 using my mobile network but i can't update to lolipop because it would use all my remaining 3g network data.
Btw i did some heavy modding on my galaxy s4 so i'm not a newbie to android.
I'm also willing to pay for support but to be honest i'm really disappointed that such and "acclaimed" phone has problems connecting to a wifi network that works with basically everything.
Sorry if I missed it in the post, but did you reboot the router.

Yes but it didn't help.
I've had 4 N5's in my possession over the past year or so, and not a single one had any issues connecting to any WiFi network, including Netgear routers. Your problem is either specific to your particular device or your router and not with the N5 in general. I assure you, the N5 deserves all the praise (and criticisms) that it has received.ave you tried a different router? I know you used it with your iPhone's hotspot but I mean an actual router? Also, have you tried resetting your router to defaults?
Are you using MAC filtering on the router?

I just tried a dlink router on my home network and everything works!!!!!
But i want to understand why my D6300 doesn't work with the nexus (its configured the same way as the dlink).
Any suggestions???
In the meantime i'll reset the D6300.

Nope, i've disabled it.
And btw i read on some forums of people using my netgear with the nexus 5 and everything was working just fine.

If your router is handing out DHCP addresses it may have run out of addresses if you have many wireless devices connecting infrequently. But I would thing a reboot would have cleared that up.

wifi issues?

So I've had my LG G5 since day one (in the us) and it was working fine, till it wasn't.
Specs: LG-H830 (Tmo variant)
6.0.1
Build: MMB29M
It seems to only be not working at home. I have a 300mbps line with a Google OnHub router. Whenever I try a speed test it goes up really fast to 30mbps and gets stuck there.
I've tried the following:
Factory reset/Cache clear
Factory reset router
Tried a new router (wrt1900ac)
Forgetting the network
Using different wifi names
installing and trying DNSet
None of these have seemed to help.
Two funny things:
I have a Nexus 6p (running N preview) a Pixel C and they both get stuck at 30mbps
My wife's Nexus 5x while connected to 5ghz band will pull 250+mbps
I'm going crazy trying to figure out what's going on here.
Any help would be much appreciated.
I had the same issue that started about 2 or 3 weeks ago and was very frustrated I found out that it affects most Android phones it's due to a lot of the isp companies starting to use ipv6 and Android doesn't play nice with ipv6. The only fix I found was to disable ipv6 in your router settings and that will fix it.

I've tended to notice quit a large speed difference between being connected to 5ghz versus 2.4ghz networks, the latter of the two always being slower. I see that you mentioned your speed was much faster when using the 5x on the 5ghz band. Have you tried setting your devices to use only the 5ghz band? Unfortunately, this is not a permanent solution, as you'll have to allow 2.4 to work again pretty much every time you leave the house, and as far as I've found, there's no way to tell the phone to prefer 5.0 when available.
Antenna design flaws,Poor contact

WiFi 5 Ghz issues

I've noticed whenever I connect to a 5Ghz network, it's complete garbage. At my house, when I connect to 2.4 Ghz I get a consistent speed of around 75mbps, when I switch to 5 Ghz, I can't get more than 20 consistent. Sometimes it works super quick for a second, and then anything I try to do, web surfing, videos, downloading apps etc.... just suddenly stop as if I have no connection and never start again.
No issues here with 5ghz - can only suggest resetting router and phone, otherwise perhaps you have a faulty handset.
Also no problems here. I find the range off the antennas great.
Did several speedtests and no drop outs.
Just got mine and AC 5ghz works great. Getting 235/23 mbs on my home internet.
I have the same issue. Inconsistent connection and slow speeds on 5ghz, only way to fix is a router restart, but then if i turn off WiFi and re-enable, the problem returns. Possible IP issue?
When I received the phone 2.4ghz was fine (110/110) but 5ghz was not (550/3).
I had to go to setting > WiFi > Advanced (in the "..." menu near the gear on the upper right corner) and uncheck Wi-Fi optimization.
Then I got 550/250mbps
Not sure if it's relevant to your problem, but you could try that.
Good point. Seem to remember something similar on the 10 too. Thanks!
You're welcome Hope it will solve your issue.
Unfortunately, that didn't work. Got a replacement handset yesterday, just to be sure that it wasn't the phone, same problem happens?!
I use a Linksys router, if the op is still on the thread, what about you? Have no issues on other 5ghz networks. Well, the other 2 that I've connected to.

I think I remember a bug with some Android phones on 5Ghz if IPv6 broadcasting was enabled in the router. Are you using this? Tried disabling it?

Thanks, i'll give that a try. I've never had this issue with any other phone, it's very odd and actually frustrating. While I can fix it at home, I wont be able to modify router settings when out and about, so if I struggle to get WiFi on the move, i'll be paying a fortune for data, which may force me to return the phone.
Just tested mine with Virgin Media router and WiFi optimisation turned on. Maxed out at 220Mbps

I'm noticing issues on a Linksys router as well. My wife's old M8 had an issue that would go away when Bluetooth was turned off.
I messed with settings tonight and it seems more stable. I just made 2.4 and 5 on SSID, and changed all band settings to Auto.

If its happening on other connected devices on your wireless network either 2.4 or 5Ghz try changing Router channels.
I've seen this happen on 2.4Ghz. Turns out since I lived in a pretty Wifi congested area the channel my router kept picking as "The best" was actually 6 and all the routers default to that channel. Literally that frequency was so bugged down my internet went from hitting 60-80Mbps down to Kbps. Wifi Analyzer showed all 12 channels were pretty full. I switched to 5Ghz only and immediately saw a difference, but the few channels I do have on my router are getting congested nowadays too.
Nowadays whenever my phones Wifi speeds hit the floor I do speedtest on other wifi devices and Ethernet speeds. If theres a significant difference I quickly use Wifi Analyzer to see if its time to switch channels.
when i got my htc u11 unlocked i had problems with the wifi not connecting at all or if it did it would disconnect. i found that there was a software update so i downloaded it on my mobile data. once installed everything started working correctly. mine will connect at 866mhz to my dlink-879 ACN router
The ivp6 thing or whatever is what I did when I got the m9, it wouldn't connect to my wifi at first and it was 5ghz

I forgot about that option. Had issues with my 10 when it came out a d that fixed it, so far it's working on my 11.
Still having issues with this. Tried above suggestions, not specified a channel, currently set to auto. My M9 and 10 have no issues holding a fast connection. Getting a bored of it now, as trying to stream Le Mans and it constantly cuts signal.
