[rk2928] Miracast/DLNA HDMI dongle mod - General Questions and Answers

Hello, I have one of those cheap Miracast/DLNA dongles which is based on RK2928-G chip. The problem is that the AirPlay does not work reliably enough so I would like to experiment with the device/rom, thus I started this thread.
I have managed to explore the device with adb shell (by short-circuiting one chip before power-on) and also tried to flash (with RkFlashKit) it once with some other ROM, which semi-bricked it, but was able to flash the original back and it works again, so at least I'm on the safe side when experimenting custom roms.
Has anyone had any experiments with this device? It currently has Android 4.1.1 and the AirPlay functionality is provided by shairport. I have managed to test shairport with my Linux Mint and there it works flawlessly, so it should be possible to get it work with this device.
I'm familiar with Linux and kernel building and also have built custom stuff for my rooted Samsung TV, but Android is a totally new playground for me. Does it mean that the device is rooted if I gain adb access to it, or is there more to it?
This was extracted from the device:

[Q] Installing any linux distribution on htc desire s

Hello,
I have bought the htc desire s in december'11 and I assess that I hate android and all the available custom roms so I try to get some other distribution to work on my desire s.
IMPORTANT: Please don't tell me something about the sense or how nice a chroot works, I am asking for a native installation guide.
All I want is a clean base-system (ubuntu/debian/gentoo/angstrom/...) that will boot.
Does someone know a way (howto/wiki/manpage ) to get a proper distribution to work on this device?
My Workflow:
-> install distribution
-> get wlan access to work
-> boot device with autoconnect (wlan) and sshd (openssh or dropbear)
-> connect via ssh and get an graphical frontend like X-server to work.
best regards
invalid id
Why did you buy an Android phone when you hate Android?
Anyway, are you planning to use the phone to make calls?
If so, you can't use any standard Linux distributions.
If you do some googling you should be able to find a guide to install Ubuntu and run X on it.
I think there's an official version for dual core phones, but unfortunately that does not affect this phone.
Ubuntu doesn't run native, but through chroot.
There are no native installation guides.
If you can remake any distribution to have 4MB kernel and load everything from another partition - you can try to make a native installation yourself. Look at the mounts in loaded system, look at the kernel code and see how you need to compile one, and make it.
Otherwise - sell the phone and buy something else.

[Q] Modules and Drivers Needed for Galaxy Tab 2 (P3100)

Hi guys anyone knows how to compile modules for P3100?
I own a P3100, I want this Tab to run microcom on Terminal Emulator so that I can console/manage Equipments that run Rs232. In order to use microcom, I think I need to attached my Prolific USB to Serial Adapter to ttyUSBx. Furthermore, inorder to attached to ttyUSBx, I need usbserial.ko and pl2303.ko modules.
Although third party apps (Slick USB to Serial) can do this but I would prefer to run it via microcom.
I have successfully run this setup using SGS2 using dorimanx kernel.
Any one knows how to compile kernel, I would be willing to test.
Thanks in advance

[Q] [A700][Port?]Native Ubuntu Port on A700?

Hey guys!
I bought the A700 a few months ago and now I stumbled upon this link in our forum. It's a port of Ubuntu on the A500 running natively with Wifi. Touchscreen runs out of the box, ARM Support is now supported natively by kernel 3.7.
The following things I need to mention:
-rootfs must be on the external sdcard as a ext2/3/4 partition
-sdcard can still be used when partitioned as FAT32/ext
-if internal wifi does not work out of the box, you can connect any wireless usb dongle via usb-host
My question to the devs here would be:
Is it too hard to port this to our A700 as it nearly is the same as the A500?
I hope this wasn't posted beforehand and was answered, but I'd like to support such kind of project so I can use Linux on my device natively.
As nobody answers the question...
After rooting, it'd be possible to use Ubuntu/Debian/Arch Linux via chroot. But I couldn't find links whether media applications , especially sound, is working. The possibility to use Linux fully on my tablet pleases me, but I rather have it boot natively, but for this we need some things I found in the Asus Transformer TF700 Forums(which is one of the first tablets to get dual boot Android/Linux):
-unlocked bootloader (that's quite a major fact in porting linux to our devices. I'm no dev, I can program a little in java but that's it.)
-devs willing to build armhf Linux from source or use Ubuntu armhf /Debian armhf versions(I'd prefer Ubuntu or Debian as both are quite the same but Unity would be better to use on touchscreens)
-compile the tegra drivers in this package (wouldn't be too hard if one package already existed, people could install it after installation for HWA)
-rootfs on sdcards (since Android is still on NAND and it'd be cool to dualboot, but still, the lack of an unlocked bootloader is hardening the entire process
I don't know if it'll work, but if we write an petition to ACER to unlock their bootloader, maybe they could send as a tool like ASUS did?
Or does such a tool already exist? I only know of rooting tools but none to unlock bootloaders (which could explain why you can easily brick your Iconia A700 , i think)
If somebody is willing to help/provide ideas to this project, I could do some work and ask devs who work also on the Linux Kernel to help us out. But we also need a volunteer to lend them their device. But first, and that's priority nr.1: we need to unlock bootloader as fast as possible.
Ninja Edit: Found out that the bootloader is already unlocked, so we just need an .img that boots from sdcard so the Iconia sees it.
So, I played around with chroot+boot scripts to boot linux "virtually" on the A700.
Wouldn't it be possible to leave the ubuntu.img on the sdcard, but get the bootscript on the NAND/internal memory, so it could execute while booting?
I don't know how to accomplish this, but there'd be a way to execute it to run natively. Ubuntu via chroot with keyboard/mouse via USB OTG and HUB works without sound working yet, but it's just a matter of time.
I really hope that more people start helping/providing info on this matter , just to provide more ideas to this project.

[Q] USB OTG and UsbManager

I was trying to communicate with my Arduino Uno by means of the USB Host API. The problem is, that the UsbManager always returns an empty list of devices. I tried this with multiple ROMs:
ViperS 5.1
ViperS 5.2.1
CyanogenMod 11 by Sultanxda
CarbonRom
With ViperS I find the Arduino ( or any other USB devics ) using lsusb.
With the other roms I don't find the Arduino.
Does anybody know what is the missing puzzle piece to get the UsbHost API find my devices?
If no, is there a way to get a USB tty to use it with the arduino (with root) ?
Or does anybody know a ROM where it works?
ViperS
Ok, for now I found out that the cdc-acm driver is used for cummunicating with the arduino. Fortunately this driver is included as module in SebastianFM's kernel, used by ViperS roms.
I just ran
Code:
insmod /system/lib/modules/cdc-acm.ko
and i got /dev/ttyACM0
That means that I am able now to communicate by using root.
That's good for now, but does anybody know how to do it without root?

Help needed updating Mediawave MW22-A32 from 4.4.4 to OS6.0+

Hi all! Android noob looking for suggestions.
Manufacturer: Mediawave PC (now Techland PC)
Hardware Model: MW22-A32
Current OS: 4.4.4
Chipset: Rockchip RK3288 (supposedly capable of Android 8.1)
Rooted with SuperSU
Purchased this 22" touch display off eBay and wanted to load an app that requires Android 6 or higher. The manufacturer does not offer an update package for this device and indicated what I have was a special build for a single project that is now likely being refreshed and hardware liquidated. Tech Support indicated I needed to simply buy a NEW device that already has the OS updated.
I would like to think we can update to a newer version of OS, but I have no idea where to start. I checked a few online videos, but they seemed to point to pre-packaged OS bundles from tech enthusiasts for specific mass market tablet models.
Is an upgrade like this possible without having device specific files/firmware? If so, can you point me to a guide or walkthrough for how to do this as an Android novice? Thank you!
In order to upgrade existing Android OS as 1st thing of all things you need to find a
1. Custom Recovery
2. Custom ROM
both suitable to the mentioned device.

Using the 'Official TWRP App', I created a copy of both the boot and recovery image.
For the next step, if the device manufacturer will not supply an updated ROM, can you use the hardware profile help find a close custom rom that may work here? if so, do you have any suggestions on next steps? I installed the 'Droid Info' app to view hardware info, but it was not as detailed as I had hoped.
Can't answer your questions because I never compiled TWRP at my own.
Were you ever able to update this device? I have one that i want to update as well.
I also bought one of these off of ebay and would like to know if you figure out how to upgrade to Android 8.1.

Rockchip RK3288 model number AIO MW22-A32
I sent an email to [email protected] and will report back once I get a response:
I purchased one of these recently and the OS is Android 4.4.4
Do you know where I can download the ROM, Recovery image file?
I believe that I saw that your website stated the OS to be Android 7.1.
Is it supposedly capable of Android 8.1?
<and thank you very much>
Yet another question...
The unit I purchased seems to have only 1GB DRAM?!?
Any way to increase this? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I did not attempt. TechlandPC did respond and said that this model maxed out at 4.4.4. I was not convinced that the updated firmware will work with this device and could not find anyone specifically doing it to this device - and did not want to brick it. I was able to delete some large system apps and free up some space with OAndBackupX (Andorid 4+)- https://f-droid.org/en/packages/dk.jens.backup/
Interested in this aswell.
I know the topic is a few months old but I’m currently looking at possibly purchasing the 22” or 15” in models and wanted to see if there were any further updates? What is everyone using them for? I hope to use them with home assistant and fully kiosk…anyone know if it’s possible? Seems like there is enough interest, maybe we can get this tablet upgraded?

I purchased the 22" for my 83yr mother. I created a desktop stand for her to use it to view her gmail, facebook, etc. Its fairly limited because of the small space on the device, So I found a way to move many of the apps to an external usb. It also does not have a camera - which would have been nice for her to be able to use to make videochats, but I could not get an external usb camera to work (tried 4 different makes/models). I never did attempt to flash and upgrade it.
Oh wow Don…good on you for getting your grandmother up and going with it. I’m a little scared to take the plunge not knowing if it can run what I need…how good is the browser (is the system sluggish?) They two I’m looking at say they have built in cameras (I too was hoping to use it) but I bet it will be a no go :/

If it says in the description that it comes with a camera - you may be ok. Mine clearly stated that it did not have a camera.
It is responsive and works well. I did do something to make it sluggish but I do not remember specifically... it may have been that I came very close to maxing out the storage which caused the issue.
The other thing that I was really disappointed in is that it does not have an HDMI in. So I could not push video to it. It does have an HDMI port, but I havent tested if it does push video to another device since I didnt have a need to do that.
It’s good to hear it’s responsive (or was lol) maybe I should just bite the bullet and get it…if I can just get it to run Home assistant it will be golden…if you think of anything else or figure anything out let me know!
