Rooting question - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all. Coming from an HTC m7 there has been a small learning curve as far as development etc for Samsung devices for me.
My main question is, though currently I understand rooting trips this Knox counter thing which brake payments (don't care) is it a matter of time until a rooting method that doesn't trip it is figured out? Or is it the only option

If you don't care about POSSIBLY losing the ability to use Samsung Pay, when and if it ever comes out, just use the tried and trusted CF auto root. You could be waiting indefinitely for a method that roots without tripping Knox. The problem is there might be a way as there's a thread in this very forum with some claiming to be working on a way, but that's no guarantee and there's usually never an ETA. For me I rooted the day I got the phone, in fact having root is a prerequisite before I buy that certain phone.

OK that's what I though. It's driving me nuts not having root

I need a reason to do this.

Why should I need to root my phone, I understand about bloatwares from AT&T but need a reason if I root It what will happen? Also once its rooted, will I be able to get update android 2.2? I need a good reason why I should root it. So please help me out with those list of reasons. Thank you.

Seriously, put a little effort into searching this forum. Look at one of the other android forums. If you don't know why you would want to root your phone, then you don't need to do it.
That's the problem, all the search comes out different. That's why I am asking on here cuz nothing comes out right. You don't have to be mean or even post on here if You didn't like to hear it. I just want the real opinion and all those opinions will summerize.

Here's the things I've done since I rooted:
To get rid of the ATT apps (this one is important because they launch for no reason).
To sideload apps right from the phone.
To change the appearance.
To really "own" my phone.
I really don't know beyond that. I guess if you're fine without rooting it then don't. I used it happily for 2 weeks without root, but I couldnt stand the invasive launching ATT bloat.
What about the update, if its rooted, can I still get in air update?

Hacked....my phones are all rooted & busybox...

I'm in desperate need of help and this forum was recommended. Im a nurse, not a techie so bare with me. Going on almost 1 yr of every device, every acct...my whole life hacked. Its a very long story but somehow all my devices end up rooted with Busy Box installed. I never even knew what either meant. So, the 1st time Verizon thought i did it by mistake. 6 phones later...Im a genius, a special kind of stupid...or someone clearly hates me and is determined to make me lose my mind. HELP!!!!

And what's the question?
The question is, how is someone doing this to my phones. I have seen plenty of posts where people are inquring how to root and install busybox. So the likelyhood of someone like me "accidentally" doing this to one phone is pretty much impossible. But 6??? I downloaded the busybox installer. Chose the option to remove it from my system. Factory reset. Downloaded the app again. It still says im rooted and still have busybox installed. I changed phones, carriers, phone numbers. Nothing works.

There is just 2 possible solutions:
1) Someone has physical access to your phones and like to play with them
2) You're buying already rooted phones

Thats tech-support here - PI next door.
You may be installing software that can root the phone without you knowing, or maybe buying rooted phones. Leave the BusyBox Installer uninstalled. It may somehow be rooting you. Install security software on your phone and it will usually tell you about root. And when getting a new phone, only download apps from the Google Play Store, and nowhere else. Any shady apps should be avoided on the Play Store.

There are a couple of other options you need to look into. Once someone have compromised your gmail (or any other email) accounts you're using with your phone, there is really no telling what they can install remotely. However, the few most important aspects are:
Don't ever buy a used or opened-box phone from some "friendly guy who has one too many".
Don't ever let your phone out of sight, where you cannot be sure nobody can touch it.
Don't ever let some un-professional service center handle your phone, especially after you've already been there.
Also, it is clear from your picture that you seem to be a rather attractive woman. This is also a disadvantage, since unfortunately there are a lot of creepy guys out there, with nothing better to do that to try to get some sneak shots and personal info from tech-innocent nurses. I advice you to find a hacker girlfriend to help you find out who's spying on you.
Good luck!

What are chances of root?

Root is one of 2 major things I like with my phones, I knew both had a high chance of not ever being on this phone when I bought it, but I want the XDA communities opinion, is there hope? All this bloat that I thought was going to be removed is really getting to me...I have 2.6gb of RAM used at all time and I can't even begin to understand why, unless RAM is what is making the S6 not a slug like previous Sammy phones. Sucks but is there any hope? Anyone who will work to find a way? What about bootloader unlocks? I know with my old S4 it was never achieved, same with S5. However I only really 'need' root.
Last question, has the community given up on this device before they even started? I know its early but I'm just wondering, haven't been in a Sammy phone for a year.

For root, there is hope, but not all that much of it. Though I'm pinning my hopes for a note 4 root on an exploit for the s6. Hopefully something can be found that works for both.
For bootloader, never.
I came from the verizon note 4 and big as the root bounty got in 6 months we never saw root but it has been phones in the past that got root late so wishful thinking . Also I read rumors that the note 4 might be rooted soon so maybe the exploit will be similar also I'm not an expert but I've heard unused ram is wasted ram on android so you shouldn't be worried about ram usage as long as the phone is snappy and smooth .
It's possible that this late in the game for the Note 4, someone may be waiting for a bounty on the S6 and then release an exploit that works with both.
Highly unlikely. Note 4 has had a few close calls, but nobody has been able to get it done. The s6 will likely never have root on Verizon...unfortunately.
Wow I didn't realize it was so hard to root. I guess I should've researched this beforehand but version sold it the cheapest so I bought it on impulse. If things aren't looking good maybe I'll return it within the 2 weeks and see if I can get a tmobile one for not too much more.

The T-Mobile S6 won't work on Verizon.
Only downside of Samsung root is tripping the Knox counter..And there's no going back from that. So pretty much if they check, your warranty is voided if you ever have a non rooted issue that you can use the warranty on. My old note 3 the screen started to left up and my Knox counter was tripped. Never took it in as fear as id get billed later for something after they swapped it out.
So it may be a long shot but do we want to setup a bounty for gaining root?
I think s6 will see root but not unlocked boot loader

Is anybody close to unlocking the latest bootloaders, or is it unlikely?

I (very) recently got a Verizon Galaxy S6 and (stupidly) allowed the updates to run :silly:. I should have known better, as I went through the unlocking/rooting process with Verizon's S3. I could live with it for a bit if people think it will be unlocked in the near future (I'm on VRU4BOG9), but if there's a reason that it's unlikely that it will ever be unlocked, I can still return it and cancel my plan. I could just change carriers, but it's a little tricky because it involves my wife's phone/line, as well.
Does anyone have any information or opinions regarding this?
Thanks!
I'm with you in the same boat.
It was past the baseband even before i let the updates run.
I doubt there will be anything. This forum is pretty dead. No developers etc. I am going to look into getting a tmobile s6 and see if I can unlock, root and get it working on verizon. I think it can be done I've just not looked into it yet so not for sure.

t-mo has CDMA radio?
or you plan to run LTE only?
i would be interested to find out as well
It's unlikely.. as some of the recent dev posts have made clear samsung is the ultimate anti-developer company... as such most of the dev's that would normally work on this have moved on to other brands. It's also gotten to the point that it's almost impossible to actually unlock.. they almost always work around it rather than unlock it, and there are only so many of these workarounds out there.
It may get rooted again, but it will be very unlikely that the bootloader gets unlocked.. basically our only hope would be a leaked test bootloader thats already unlocked.. But I've only ever heard of this happening once.
Take it back while you can. Had my s6 rooted on 5.0.2 but there was no xposed support or xposed for it. If you enjoy rooting your phone the outlook is not good. Not much going on with this scene. After owning mine for just 2 months I sold mine on eBay and am headed towards a nexus. Not a bad phone but not good for flashing...I will do my research next time before getting a Samsung !

It's Samsung that lets Verizon lock us out. They let companies throw their logo on it still so...
How about Chainfire
EXPERIMENT: Root without modifying /system (you can search for it here on XDA)
I hope it could actually work soon!

Becoming less and less happy that I bought this phone. Especially on the payment plan. I may have to bite the bullet, pay it off and just sell it for whatever I can get. Sucks. I loved my fascinate, my S3, and my S4. Been using my Moto Maxx 2 more and more lately. THAT'S SAD.

Besides the Nexus what model phones are now dev friendly? I was looking at a G4 but apparently LG is just like Samsung with the nearly uncrackable locked bootloaders now.
s5 just got full bootloader unlock..
Is it Verizon or the Exynos chip that's holding back development on this device? ELI5
Sent from my XT1565 using Tapatalk
It's the customized software that samsung builds for Verizon that limits access to root and bootloader. Without having root privileges, you can not make any system changes let alone access it. The chip has nothing to do with this.
s5 just got bootloader unlock BUT the dev has not said he will release anything. It may never happen on this device. having said that the debloater is the key to a smooth device with good battery. If debloating is all you need, that can be done without root.
After debloating about 150 apps on my s6, I can get days and days on battery with minimal use.
This who ordeal with Samsung screwing us on the S6 is making me want to switch to a Nexus...

ROOT: is there a way of not tripping this Knox thing yet?

Hi there,
I just got my brand new S8+. The reason I want to root it is to be able to install Cerberus as a system app, so if it ever gets stolen or lost, I'll be able to track it no matter what. However, I'm worried about this Knox thing. I heard that besides voiding my warranty and "tagging" my hardware, I'll also not be able to use Samsung Pay and some other apps. I wonder if there's currently a way of rooting it without tripping Knox. Maybe by using KingoRoot, towelroot or anything similar? Does any of that work?
What do you guys suggest me?
Thanks!
As of today, none such root exploitation successful.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. You are still able to track, lock, and wipe directly from google and samsung accounts ana there is always Plan B app in play store.

or buy a non-U.S. version phone, which work perfectly with U.S. companies (AT&T type GSM systems).
