Probably not worth it to fix water damage. Better off replacing it

Never power it on immediately after any water damage..
It is best using vacuum cleaner to suck the water or most of the moisture inside the phone and follow with dipping it into a container full of rice for like 2 to 3 days.. you would have much better chances of recovering it back.

There is no easy way out of this, no matter what other guys tell you. You need to open the device, remove the mainboard and carefully inspect it for visible water marks which need to be cleaned away with pure alcohol.
Only after doing so and drying the board, you might have a chance of it working again.

leaving it powered on risks of short circuit no?

If you leave it powered on or with the battery connected the end result is massive corrosion from both the impurities in it and the galvanic erosion ( metal + water + electricity ).
The best course of action is to imediately shut it off , open it up and disconnect the battery . Once you've done that , get a container , fill it with the purest iso alcohol you can get ( besides removing impurities it pulls water out if pure enough ) , gently brush the board , then dry it with either a blow dryer or by putting it in a hot , dry place for a few hours.
I've used canned air successfully to blow the moisture from under chips and overall , so that can work too.
The easiest damaged parts are the display ( if water or alcohol gets between layers ) , charging and power circuit ( since there's quite a bit of power flowing through that area ) , as well as RF components since they are under shield cans that might contain the moisture and corrode over time.
Once it starts showing signs of damage it's going to get downhill fast - and repairing it is no longer worth it - you will race to replace components as they fail one by one.

Water damage

I have woken up with water on my galaxy tab 2 screen, I wiped it off. but the screen isn't responding. Almost half of the screen isn't responding so I can't even unlock the device.
I don't know what to do now, any help is appreciated.

First of all make sure the device is completely dry, follow the next tutorial : http://www.wikihow.com/Save-a-Wet-Cell-Phone.
What worked for me was to put my device for a few hours in dry rice (yes, you read it right, RICE, the kind you eat), just fill a sealable container with dry rice, put the device (phone/tablet) inside, seal the container (put the lid on) and leave it there a few hours. The rice is a very good water absorbent and it should absorb most of the humidity.
Ideally you should take out the battery, but with the Tab2 that's impossible unless you have the right tools.
Hope this helps.

I've dried the device itself, and put it a bowl with rice in it. I didn't put the tablet inside a container, do I have to?

Not necessarily, but it helps because then the rice will only suck the water/humidity from inside the bowl (and of course your tablet) and not from the surrounding environment.

I'll leave it to dry overnight but I just got one question: Is it possible that the damage could be permanent?

It depends on where and how much water got into the tablet. If it was just a little moisture and it didn't do any short-circuit then your tablet should be fine, on the other hand if there was a short-circuit or any of the contacts/circuits got corroded then the damage could be permanent.
There is no 100% way to say for certain, a service could do the estimation more precisely.
For now, all you can do is wait a few hours and see after that if the touchscreen works correctly or not. If it still does the same then you'll probably have to take it to a service.
P.S. most warranties don't cover water damage, you'll have to see what type of warranty you got whether it covers water damage or not, services usually can tell if a device was damaged by water (there are a few paper strips inside the device that change color when they get wet and don't change back after drying).
P.S.2 i've dropped my phone into water twice and both times i got lucky and didn't damage it (it still works correctly after about 6 months since the last "incident"), my girlfriend on the other hand wasn't as lucky, she only dropped her phone in water once but the battery blew (it made a short-circuit) and the entire phone was "killed", the service said they would have to change the entire motherboard, which would have been more expensive than the original price of the phone
Well, I don't think anything went wrong with it. The device itself is working normally except for the touchscreen which wasn't responding. I'll check the device tomorrow.
The touchscreen responds normally now but the device is kinda laggy, will leave it for a couple of hours and report back. Could this be because of some water inside the device itself?

Water damaged nexus 5 won't boot

Hi after coming back from vacation and dipping in the pool with my nexus 5 I have came home and soaked my nexus 5 mother board and parts in 99% alcohol. I have cleaned the motherboard with a toothbrush but the corrosion fades out when the alcohol is covering it but comes back after drying. Also what is the cloth like material on the motherboard?
As for booting my phone can only boot into the safe mode launcher and then goes into battery charging symbol after the google symbol when I press start. My phone also only works when It is plugged into a charger.
Any help would be appreciated thanks. I do not think I cleaned it well enough
Water damage is.often fatal, beyond cleaning with alcohol. Corrosion is not the only problem. Shorts are too. If its not working now, it never will. Cut your losses.

Its too late for this device now but if this ever happens again, turn off the phone immediately and remove the back/battery and place everything in a bowl of uncooked rice for a day or 2 to have the rice extract the fluids from the phone/battery.

[Q] Washing machine vs Nexus 5

So... my n5 was submerged into washing maching for at least 10-15 mins. and I'm using the traditional method, ( dip into rice bucket ) and leave it overnight, for the rice to absorb all the moisture and stuff. :crying:
I've remove the sim tray and cover n5 with rice.
I hope when I wake up later, it'll be able to work.
Is there any method I can restore the phone's files even if it is dead?
For example, using adb to control the phone?
Or better yet, if phone is able to boot, but screen is damaged, can it emulate the *image* to some software and we control from there or something?
Please give me all the possible solutions for getting the phone dry up or restore the files..
Update 1: sorry for not reading the main thread in General, was too furious.
When I wake up, tried to turn on, but fail. Then I went to remove the cover, there's water inside, then remove the screw and battery, there's water inside. After drying up everything, I put to rice again. Now I'm in office, hope my phone will wake up from deep sleep dead sleep later.
But still, any idea to recover the files inside the phone? I hope I don't damage the internal when I tried to turn on just now, how to check if battery or the motherboard is damaged?
Help please :crying:
up, updates.
Shouldn't really bump if it's been less than 24 hours. But, I'd leave it in the rice for two days. Overnight isn't long enough. Good luck!
If it starts up and you are unlocked and have a custom recovery you might be able to save files.

yes, its unlocked and have custom rec and custom ROM installed. I'm just hoping it could boot up or at least show some sign that its still half alive. I really need those files asap. I refuse to use my whatsapp in another phone. And it is my main source of connecting people other than calling.
I would use silica gel over rice

Sorry, but your device is now likely not to boot at all regardless what you try now.
Always , Always , Always open up the phone after a water immersion. Open , disassemble completely , rinse with IPA , then distilled water , then dry with a blow drier . Saved an iphone 3g , a samsung s2 , htc desire and desire x like this. My desire x ( after a 15 min dunk in the river ) still works - and it's been 2 years since then.
Rice doesn't work - at all in my experience. And just leaving the battery in for 24h means you have every chance to kill you phone.
Edit : data recovery will be IMO almost impossible without paying at the very least a few thousand dollars. If the EMMC is fried ad another order of magnitude to the bill.

Don't have and don't know where to get IPA at my country here, will search around later.
how in the world would it takes a few thousand dollars. thats insane!! damn.
Hopefully it'll show me some signal of the phone later when I got back from work. :fingers-crossed: But I have a bad feeling. Lol.
Anyway, thanks for your answer! Will note it down
Most of the time there's no chance of reading the NAND using the phone itself.
That means you need to desolder it ( extremely hard for Nexus 5 since it's epoxied as well , you need to mill the pcb from the back side until you reach the solder blobs ) , prototype a break-out board for it , interface it and read it. No one will give you any warranties for the success of the process.
A brand new NAND without glue , full datasheets and known protocol ? 300$ an hour with a 6 hour minimum.
Water damage + glue ? I never got a quote for that , but it's probably going to be 3000$ an hour - and it will take at least 2 hours just to mill the pcb off. Add another hour to clean it , 3+ hours to proto the board and either make it in-house or have it made at some pcb fab (though they won''t bill you for the waiting time if you are lucky ) , another hour to put the chip in , and countless hours to reverse engineer the protocol and get the data out - probably somewhat corrupted as well.
TLDR : unless you need 64bit variables for your income statement NOT worth it.
If the data stored on the phone is so damn important, why didn't you have a backup of it? Why was the only copy of this data on an easily lost, easily broken, unreliable storage medium in your pocket?
The problem with washing machines is you're not just dealing with water, you have some fairly serious soap too, and this is really what your concern is. Soap is alkaline and corrodes the traces inside the phone. You really need to immediately strip the phone down; rinse the phone thoroughly with distilled water and then dry well for a few days.
You should have just put it in the dryer after its wash

15 minutes , powered on at first in very conductive water ( soap+dirt+hot water) . It's too late for a rinse since I doubt there will be anything working in that phone anymore. Not to mention the mechanical action . If the battery wasn't in it might have survived , albeit with a lot of possible damage.
Ladies and gentleman. My phone survived.

Considering it was in the washing machine, you didn't remove the battery, attempted to turn it on, then water came out when you finally opened it up..
You're lucky it has any sign of life at all.

You shouldn't even try to power it on...now pray. And go as fast as you can to the closest repair center and tell them what happened. Phone has to be opened and cleaned/dryed properly. You can't do that by yourself, or it is difficult to do it even with the tutorials on how to break it apart. All components should be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol and blown dry. Turn it off immediately and go with it to a service center...really
Every second while the phone is charging/powered, increase the chances to end up with a hardware brick. And the repair costs will be higher than buying a new one

Because water is doing damage in time not instantly. The water, especially from pools or even worse sea/ocean, contain minerals, salts and chemicals that remain on the circuits after water has evaporated. They have a corrosive action on contacts and electronic components and posess a high risk of short-circuit that's not immediately observed, making a device totally unusable. The biggest initial risk is to fry a component due to a short-circuit, that's why is recommended to power off and take out the battery from such devices but that's not all. Unfortunately taking out the battery from the One S is not possible as with other phones so parts of the phone/board still remain powered even if you turn it off. Now as time passes by, water and it's components are doing a slow damage unless phone it's not properly cleaned inside. That's why I told you about isopropyl alcohol. Trust me, if your phone still works is a miracle and you still don't know if parts of it are not ireversibile damaged. Any time using it further like this will increase the chances to have it permanently bricked.

Oh no. I told you to go with it at a service center not to submerge it yourself in alcohol. That's not how it should be cleaned. It should be opened and components wiped with alcohol not drowned in it. And surely not when the battery is still connected.
Reboot to bootloader (if you still can) and you have there option to power off. It won't start up again. Leave it like this till you go to a service center, DON'T try to do something yourself again

Ok. Then search on youtube or here on XDA, was posted a video how to disassemble the One S. After you take it apart, disconnect the battery and wipe it with cotton balls and alcohol. Especially the contacts and circuit. Dont rub it hard, just clean it gentle... And don't drawn it again in alcohol. Let it dry completely after that. It might be that camera has been permanently damaged if you seen liquid IN it. Also the screen is very sensible if water or any other liquid gets between it's layers. And you should be very careful with every contact...and light up a candle for it will you, maybe it'll help
Such operation at a service center should cost you less than 100 RON, you should make some calls and ask

man, if i tell you, youre not gonna believe me, but after drowning it in iso and letting it dry in the sun, it works just fine now and the commands that i gave it from the boot menu , which were to erase data and factory reset did not work, i thought they did, but i guess it makes sense because as soon as i pressed them the bootloop would start again. also the initial time when i tried my phone this morning it seemed like it was charging a bit too fat (the percentage), which it doesnt seem to be doing now, and im glad, cause i think that means that whatever problem its had is gone, or so i hope lol.

Water Damage Boots To Black Screen

So I've had this phone water damaged. I left it in rice in a very hot room for maybe 4 months. It boots into recovery and download mode fine and the screen works well. But when i boot it normally after flashing fresh Stock Firmware (It didn't boot before just stuck on splash). I plug phone into charge and the Samsung charger plug sound plays. That means its actually loaded into Android. Any ideas how to fix this?
I thought of replacing the LCD but since Download and Recovery shows up fine then it shouldn't be it?
You need to pull the battery asap after water exposure. The phone needed to come apart right away. Perhaps the mobo has conformal coating but the connectors do not have any protection.
You need to pull the whole thing apart, inspect and dry it completely.
Its long term prospects aren't good.

The battery won't blow up unless you get it really hot. You can't leave water in these devices at all, every minute counts especially if it has a battery.
Sorry but the rice method doesn't cut it.
My Buds case fell in my coffee and sunk to the bottom. Fished it out and tore it apart on the spot. Flushed with RO water, then rinsed with anhydrous isopropyl alcohol using centrifugal force to get as much of the alcohol off (no compressed air in the car) then let it dry.
Amazingly it still is working a year latter; I got lucky, but I was also acted fast and did the right things.
Aside from nose diving it into my full cup of coffee.
I wouldn't invest to much money into this device. Water damaged electronics are insidiously unpredictable and there's no time limit to when it will fail again even if you do manage to get it working.
Dirt minimum; take it apart and carefully inspect it. Pull the micro ribbon connectors and inspect the contacts. Make sure they're completely dry.
Anhydrous isopropyl alcohol (99%) can be used to displaced water. Be careful around LCDs if present as it can poison the liquid crystals.
Exactly the same story with a smartphone at work. The phone starts into recovery with no prolem, the display is working fine. But when I start the system it only shows me the "Samsung Galaxy A51" lettering, "Secured by Knox" and the "Powered by Android". After booting the display remains black but the device gives a feedback when pressing the volume up/down buttons.
Is there any way to reinstall the whole OS? Or maybe authorize the Fingerprint of my PC to check if there's any display output via scrcpy?

It could one of many possible damaged contact surfaces or shorted/open surface mount devices including cpu or ram flat packs or mobo traces. Even after the water is gone if it wasn't promptly removed* damage will continue to surface long after the incident.
You need to tear it apart asap. Even a few minutes may be too long.
Water damage electronics are insidious failures waiting to happen.
Cut your loses.
*prompt removal is no guarentee but greatly improves chances of success.
