[Q] Sprint stock BOA6 LOLLIPOP tether - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was on 4.4.4 kit-kat and I was able to use tether. But now that I have updated to OTA lollipop I can not get tether to save my life. I've try many ways that I know and ones I saw in forums but nothing is working. I used wifi tether router app on 4.4.4 and was good but i can't get it to work now. My question is is anyone on the OTA update with tether working. I really don't want to go custom rom but if needed i will. I have root, busybox, supersu, and sqlite installer and editor. What am I missing. I never have issues with tinkering with phones but I'm at a stand still.

Did you try this? It worked for me.

I did. Thanks for the reply. I get the same results. The device will see the wifi then it says "connecting to wifi" then flip to "obtaining address" and just cycle between those two until it times out

This: http://forum.xda-developers.com/not.../app-one-click-hotspot-enabler-menus-t2816159
Install, Open, Press "Enable Native Hotspot". Reboot... Enjoy.

I have hotspot now but thanks. Im on M.O.A.R rom

Wifi Tether Router stopped working for me when I upgraded to 5.0. I spend hours emailing the developer and nothing could get it to work. I used the app in the native hotspot unlocker thread and it works great except that it causes a popup saying "enabling wifi will turn off hotspot" to appear every 30 seconds to 1 minute.

D2G VZ upgrade and Rooted Wifi Tethering

So months ago I upgraded my D2G to Honeycomb with the VZ update. Then I tried to root and get Wifi Tethering back. I found out I could not do that with the new update so I went back to Froyo. Ever since then I have been having to decline the updater twice a day. Annoying. Also there are a lot of quirks with the old Froyo too.
Has anyone figure out how to make the wifi tethering work with new update? Or is there a CM7 mod that works with wifi tethering?
Thanks
Could you explain how did you update to Honeycomb?
I just unrooted and took the VZ update.

You're not running Honeycomb.
Also, you just have to make sure that you're rooted, have updated your SU binary, and are using the latest version of Wifi Tether.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether is where you want to go to ensure you've got the newest version. That'll ensure that you can continue to tether.
I had to get rid of Honeycomb to get my rooted tether to work. VZ put something in the update code to make harder to tether a rooted phone. So are you saying that someone has found a way around it now?
You never had Honeycomb. Android 3.x "Honeycomb" is a tablet-only OS. The last several updates from Motorola for the D2G (firmware versions 4.5.60x through 4.5.629) have all been based on Android 2.3 "Gingerbread."
I am currently running rooted stock 4.5.608. I just installed the WiFi Tether for Root Users app that projektorboy linked, and am posting this from my laptop tethered to my D2G using that app.
---------- Post added at 02:54 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:47 PM ----------
On the other hand, that app does not work seamlessly. When I tried to turn off tethering my phone locked up and I ended up having to pull the battery to reboot it.
Other third-party tethering apps have also been reported to work on the D2G running various Gingerbread ROMs (stock or otherwise), but IIRC they all require root privileges. Either experiment with them on your own to find one that you like, or search various forums for other people's reports (rootzwiki especially has a very active D2G community).
You are correct, Gingerbread is what it is, it has been awhile since I messed with it. And I remember it being a real pain in my rear. So let me get this straight.
You took the update from VZ. Did you unroot before taking the update?
Rooted the new Gingerbread update.
Installed the tethering app that was listed above.
And it all work out well except for the occasional freezing. Back when the update first came out this was not possible so someone must have found a work around.
rooting D2G 2.3.4
I never rooted my phone but wanted to finally root but nothing works, is there a way to install a custom rom w/o phone being rooted. Hence i tried z4root and pete's tools which failed at the abd file. If not can a developer write one for 2.3.4 as there are so many ppl with this model that are trying to root and can't. I would really like to use a firewall on my phone so badly.

I am running rooted stock 4.5.608 (keep refusing the OTA upgrade) (confirmed using root checker basic, have superuser installed). I downloaded the latest wireless tether from the posted link and installed it. The program starts fine, and my laptop tethered to the phone, but as soon as I tried a webpage it goes to Verizon and will not let me surf... Do I need something else to make this work? I am about ready to try to SBF back to Froyo A956 2.4.330 using a file I just downloaded... I mainly use my phone for messenger, email, and a little bit of surfing. I want to be able to tether so I can use my laptop in the car. I don't even use that much data (think my biggest month was about 1GB)...
I swear Version sucks! Trying to get this to work I uninstalled wireless tether, then when I tried to go back to the link to download the apk again, Verizon hijacked my browser and sends me back to their webpage... WTF?
How do I prevent OTA updates once I SBF back to Froyo? Will big brother be able to tell what version I am running on my phone?
As stated previously, if you have root(big if) then there are 3rd party apps that allow tethering. I went from .608 to cm4d2g as stated iin my sig. I use open garden flawlessly...

Why you are going a HARD WAY for Wifi tetering?
Here is an EASY WAY, Just open Market, download and install "FoxFi" then your phone will become a Wifi Hotspot.
Enjoy.

I heard about that app on All About Android. They said wait untill people confirm that they were not billed for tethering. Said it worked great on the supported devices though.

[Q] Too slow tethering

I have been using my samsung conquer with stock rom rooted. I have been using mainly fox fi but also other tethering apps. I always got good 4g speed. I needed to replace the phone because of a broken charger port. When I did there was an update installed that would not root, I followed a guide on rootzwiki (unavailable atm) to flash and root a stock rom with the update already installed. Since then tethering does not work very well. Some sites load very slow some not at all. Google search works perfect but links do not.
How can I tell if this a hardware issue or something else? I have another phone that has the same update but it is OTA not built-in and tethering is fine.
Is there anything I can do to test what is happening? It feels like a firewall...
thanks

[Q] Wifi Tether Not Working

I have wifi tether for root users and it has stopped working for some reason. I soft bricked my phone about a month ago and had to reinstall everything. I used supersu this time and also have voodoo ota root keeper. I have the most current Verizon update and don't know if this has anything to do with it.
When I use the app it starts without any issues. I get the symbol in my notification bar but it does not show the green one that let's me know I have a wifi hotspot active. It also says that it has been given root access. I am using the galaxy s3 profile and have tried the nexus one as well. All of the other settings are at their default value. Thank you in advance for any advice you can give to help resolve my problem!
Are there any other notifications, down where it says root granted? And does it show the mb up/down at the bottom of the app?
Which ROM are you on also... And try using the generic ICS/JB(Wlan0)
same issue
Im having the same issue after i updated to jellybean. I changed all the settings i could think of in the app settings itself. But notting works. It says its tethering i get the superuser granted, but then the download numbers stops at 0.2 kbps, the upload stays at 0.0 kbps and i cant get my computer to connect. Im running thr stock jellybean update rooted and cwm recovery.
P.s. this is my fisrt post and i cant find anything on the web for help till i found this today. Sorry for the problem and thankz for the help!!

Hoping you both are using Foxfi, right? It doesn't work with JB on most devices, it's in the write-up for the program if you look on Google Play (market).

Didnt see anywhere is say that, but thanks foxfi works ok.
I'm able to connect to my N7 with FoxFi but I'm not able to actually get online, any suggestions?
If any of you are still looking for answers to getting wifi tether to work, go to the link that coolfreak provided. I've confirmed that TrevE's modification works perfectly on the new Jelly Bean ROMs.
I'm using "Portable WiFi Hotspot Free" on the Jelly Bean leak and it works great

[Q] HELP.. doing casual on my S3 VRBMF1

Sorry but doing the casual on my Verizon S3 4.1.2 @F1
I did step 1 and 2 and checked supersu as it said to update binary.. Not sure how to update. I've seen the same question many times without an answer. I haven't went any further and I'm still hooked up.. so I guess I am rooted now and unlocked, as I have supersu and titanium backup (root) but I haven't installed one of the 2 recoveries.
I'm not sure how to proceed. I just want to stay at 4.1.2 so I can keep my phone as a hotspot and keep apps on sd car, but I am afraid I might get forced into taking 4.3. It happened on an earlier update when My phone rebooted even though I had checked no updates.
For what I want, I don't know which recovery I should take or which custom ROM. I need good signal strength, stability, to be able to leave my options open, and Tethering ... I have a cabin where I have to use a cell phone amp. to just get a marginal signal. and no Wi-Fi there so want to be able to tether to my wi-fi only tablet.
suggestions appreciated!
Thanks

Native WiFi Tether Mysteriously stopped working yesterday

I am running stock android 4.4 on a Droid Maxx that was rooted on 4.2.2 prior to taking the 4.4 OTA (jcase method). I implemented the elegant native wifi tether enablement via the modified VZWEntitlementServices.apk. All was working well and I used the MobileHotspot many times under this configuration. Last week I unlocked my bootloader using the "China"/ebay method. After successfully unlocking and resetting up my phone, I reconfirmed working root, and tested to confirm that wifi tether still worked. (it did).
Then - yesterday, I attempted to launch the MobileHotSpot and after the "checking subscription status" toast message, instead of starting the hotspot, it displays an "Error" status within the app. I have tried wiping cache, rebooting, restoring the original VZWEntitlementServices.apk / .odex and re-implementing the native wifi tether solution. I also tried installing HotSpotLauncher.apk from a backup taken when my tether was working.
I am at a loss. Anyone else having this problem or had this happen to them? Any assistance would be appreciated. My next steps would be to install Xposed and try the wifitether module or perhaps try some of the tether apps available on the market - but those solutions seem less ideal than trying to figure out why this functionality was working last week and suddenly stopped working. Attaching a screenshot of the "error" condition.
Any guidance would be much appreciated.
Fixed!
I think I have found a solution and wanted to post if anyone runs into the same problem...
Per the below post I found, I deleted the \data\misc\wifi folder and rebooted my device. Once it booted back up, I was able to successfully start (and connect) to my Mobile HotSpot again.
