I'm hoping someone can either tell me "it shouldn't work" or "dude, you're doing it wrong"...
Right now, I'm sitting in Puerto Rico. My wife's VZW iPhone 6 gets data everywhere. My M8 hasn't seen data since we left the US. It prompts me into Global Mode, and I occasionally catch a 3g icon in the notification bar, but I never seem to pick up data anywhere.
Is this likely to be a radio band issue, or am I missing something? APN's?
I can't speak for why but I can tell you it should work. At least mine did when I was there.

Not sure what you have/haven't tried already, but just starting off with the basics here...
First thing I would check is Settings > Go Into "Mobile Data"
Take a look at "Data Roaming" and "Preferred Network". In Data Roaming, You would probably want to "Allow access for all trips" checked off. In "Preferred Network" You want to make sure it says Global Mode.
Puerto Rico seems to be a little complicated. If you have the ShareEverything plan, you should be good. Before choosing Allow access for all trips, i would make sure your plan includes Roaming at no extra cost (some older verizon plans dont). Not sure how talk/txting is billed.

Mine worked when I went on vacation last year but I only was able to get 3G while in San Juan.

Hey everyone,
I got an AT&T Fuze (Touch Pro) and Im using it on Fido in Canada. My data is working perfectly fine, my only issue is that my phone keeps switching from 3G to H every once in a while, I was just wondering why and whats the reason for that?
Also, I have a little exclamation mark (in a yellow triangle) in the top right hand corner right beside the 3G/H/E Icon. I don't know why thats there?
Thanks to all for the help!
No, that's neither yours nor your phone issues. Once you' re in the better speed coverage, the phone will jump to H or your phone is accessing the internet.
"little exclamation mark" is a "roaming" indicator.
Heres the thing, it jumps back and forth while even accessing/using data.
Is there anyway to get rid of the exclamation mark?
have you flashed the rom?
I would be interested in how to get rid of the roaming icon too.
I have tried all the registry changes to no avail. The icon, and roaming warnings for things like the weather app, remain. It's about the last thing I need to fix but I seem to be stuck.
Im using RRE's ROM. So far it seems to have fixed itself, but now Im having more issues. I wonder if I should flash to a different ROM.
Hi guys,
I have a somewhat related problem and I hope someone can help me out. I just recently bought an unlocked HTC Touch Pro (not the Fuze version) and I am using it with my Fido sim card. Everything works and I was able to setup EDGE on it, but what bothers me is it keeps saying that I am roaming (for example when I access the Weather app). I am wondering if this is just some sort of a glitch due to the phone being unlocked or am I really roaming? I also get that roaming icon at the top. I am located in Vancouver so I am not out of town or anything. I just want to make sure so I don't end up having a crazy invoice by the end of the month. Thanks very much in advance.

It's because Fido uses Roger's towers now, but the companies are still identified separately and therefore it thinks you're roaming. As long as you have a data plan, you should be ok.
PS. Depending where in Vancouver you are, you should be getting at least 3G (3G), or hopefully HSDPA (H), vs Edge (E).

xda_fanboy, thank you very much for the helpful information. I can finally stop worrying. I do have a data plan with Fido so that should do. However, this is the second day of using the Touch Pro and the only data network I get is Edge. The only setup I did to my phone is what is listed in http://www.iday.ca/2008/11/how-to-setup-rogers-or-fido.html, under the Fido section. Would you mind taking a look and see if that is all that I need to do? I really appreciate all your help. Thanks again.

Please see my post at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3192894&postcount=3 and see if it helps. I believe you also need to go into Settings>Connections>Advanced Network and enable HSDPA/HSUPA to get the full benefit.

I also have this phone and live in Vancouver on Fido. I don't think it will work on 3G, or so it seems. Mine is not the ATT version either, just the stock HTC. Currently it runs fine on the standard network, although as mentioned i have not been able to get rid of the roaming icon, but have never been charged extra. Its too bad we can't use it on 3G, and if any can find a way, that would be awesome, id love to be using the full potential of this phone.
I think we are stuck with no 3G, unless there are any suggestions?
If your not using the AT&T Fuze, then you won't have 3G in North America. Don't worry about the roaming icon. Since the phone (or is it the software?) has no idea that Fido uses Rogers' towers, it thinks your roaming. I have the roaming icon as well, had it on many non-branded Fido phones.
I turned off 3G because I hate seeing my icon go to 3G then H at random times besides when Im using actual data and it seems that with 3G, I get worse reception! Makes no sense I know, I've tried 3 different radio's and all have the same issue. Im thinking if an HTC Touch Diamond Rogers branded Radio will work, then that would probably work the best. Anybody know if/where I can get it?

If you bought a stock HTC Touch Pro (non-ATT, non-North American) then you won't have the NA 3G radio frequency and you're stuck with Edge.
Regarding a ROM, head over to the ROM sub-forum. There's a step-by-step guide on flashing your first ROM. As far as which ROM is best, it depends entirely on what you want from it, and even then varies by personal choice from person to person. There is no 1 "best" ROM. Check out all the ROM threads (there's a Roger's specific ROM available FYI) and pick one based on what you like.

I have a similar problem as Speng2, but I have the HTC Fuze which is the american ATT branded one. I unlocked it, flashed the NATF 4.7 rom and tried many diff radios and can never get more than EDGE. I used to have 3g when it was stock. I live in Los Angeles which is a 3g area. I get full edge signal but no 3g or HSPDA. I have a feeling it has to do with a setting. Pls help.

This thread was specifically for Fido, a Canadian carrier. I have no knowledge of the settings you will require for your carrier in LA, which is the most likely reason you are not getting 3G. I would try contacting them if you haven't already. Otherwise try and find a thread for your carrier, or perhaps check HF (not sure if we can post URL's to other sites). Good luck!

What if you don't have a data plan? It seems that sypod has not been charged extra for Roaming... Does anyone know how Roaming works with FIDO? I just got the HTC FUZE and I don't want to have to pay outrageous Roaming charges. Any Ideas?
Hi there,
Hopefully someone can help because my brain is melting here. Basically I spoke to orange customer services the other day because of totally poor signal. He told me to switch to GSM only, which was fine and I know it can improve your phone signal. The thing is, it's now stuck on there, whenever I try to change it to WCDMA it automatically switches back to GSM?
Any body got any ideas?
Cheers

I feel your pain. I am also a long-suffering Orange customer. Everything was fine until they climb into bed with T-Mobile. Since then my signal has been so erratic I simply can't trust things like Google Maps to work as navigation. Orange have left me stranded twice bombing out the 3G just as I need it to get home.
Anyway, how exactly did you switch to GSM only? There are a couple of ways of doing it.
Menu> Settings> Wireless & Networks> Mobile Networks> Network Mode = GSM/WCDMA auto.
I suspect it was this one. If this is the method that is changing back to GSM, then try this one;
Open you dialer, and dial *#*#4636#*#*
This will open a hidden testing menu, from this select 'Phone Information'
Scroll to the bottom and see what the 'Set Preferred network type:' is set to.
Mine works well with both GSM auto (PRL) and GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)
See if selecting one of these helps.
Let me know how this goes.
Hiya mate,
Yeah I gave that a try earlier. It seems I have to either have a good phone signal or crap data and vice versa? Pain in the ass. Orange told me that it was because of a faulty telephone mast in my area that has been off since last week. Can't see that being right to be honest, since my signal has been ****e since I first got it in April. Thing is, my sister was having the same problem with poor signal, and she wrote to some higher up person at orange to tell them about it. It ended up with her getting out her 2 year contract, bonus! I'm just going to ring and keep complaining and then write to this person my self, and hopefully I can get out of it my self. Orange is the worst network I have been on!
Cheers for your reply
I might give that a try. I still have a year left, but would love to jump ship and move back to Vodafone. I only went with Orange as my girlfriend was on Orange and magic numbers meant free calls. She then went and screwed things up by moving in! Now I don't need to ring her so much! (facepalm)
My housing estate has a dirty great big cell tower mast at the top of it. My fillings could receive a text message. But even with max strength signal still the 3G is off and on so erratically it's not worth using. They keep telling me that "the cell tower in my area is being worked on" too. That's been their excuse since February.
I have no idea I'm afraid why your phone wont stay on a WCDMA setting however. How are your APN settings? Mine once roamed to T-Mobile without me noticing and would only do 2G.
Yeah my girlfriend is my magic number too, and I live with her as well.. Doesn't make a great deal of sense really does it?
I think you may be on to something with that tmobile thing. Does tmobile allow wcdma?

When I used to do a manual scan for other Networks the following would show up;
Orange
Orange 3G
T-Mobile
T-Mobile 3G
If I try to connect to T-Mobile 3G it wont let me. The one that is just 'T-Mobile' doesn't have anything more than 2G. What happened was my Orange signal dropped out, so it jumped onto the 'T-Mobile' one without me noticing. It then didn't go back to the Orange 3G when I got home.
I just tried it again and got;
Orange
T-Mobile UK
The 2G/3G variants seem to have been dropped and merged into a single provider for each network. I can connect to T-Mobile but still only seem to get 2G.
See which one your connected to. It might be that although we are allowed to use T-Mobile for calls/texts the deal doesn't include 3G.

Yip, that's exactly it mate. I go on tmobile and I can get only 2g, I connect to orange and it let's me have 3G. It jumps between the two networks, and as I have poor orange signal all the time it auto jumps to tmobile! So basically it looks like I'm stuck to 2g if I want to actually speak to anyone! At least now I know what the problem is, but it still doesn't make me feel any better about having to make the choice, and having to constantly check which network I'm on before knowing why I'm getting either poor 2g or poor phone signal. What a headache!
Cheers for your help, much appreciated!

Lately, I've noticed some **** with o2 as well which as I previously recall always had good service, since I been with them for as far as I can remember. I'll have full 2G signal, and randomly the data will shut off. Sometimes for a few minutes, sometimes for hours. But the phone signal remains on full... it's weird. And 3G coverage seems to be getting worse instead of better. None of this makes sense either since in March o2 apparently rolled out 900 Mhz 3G across most major UK cities, meaning 3G service on a 2G band, meaning much better 3G service in areas where only 2G service was previously good. I ain't seen **** all of an improvement, like I said it seems to be going the opposite way.
UK used to be ahead of the game when it came to cell networks, it seems most other countries have not only caught up, but jumped miles ahead. 4G is pretty standard in the US now, and they were so far behind in cell networks only a few years ago.
I have a rooted Tmobile phone (Octane) and loving it. This isn't a 'root' question, but a signal issue that I noticed before and after the root (not related to rooting).
Anyhow, when I leave an area (in my vehicle) that has low Tmobile signal, it switches to ATT and says "no service". That's fine, but what I noticed is when I return to the same area, it will take an additional 4-5 miles of driving into a strong Tmobile signal area before it pick up the Tmobile signal.
In my area, there are no agreements to roam on ATT's network, so my phone is dead until I re-enter Tmobile signal area.
My question is, it is a nuisance that my phone can't use Tmobile towers as a priority. It seems to hold onto ATT's towers longer than it should. What can I do to fix this issue if possible?
Thanks in advance!
Edit: My wife has the same phone and it does the same thing.
Have you changed modems? That seems to fix many issues pwople have with connection issues.
Not sure to be honest. I used this process to install Octane's ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1223765
I did see something in Odin about "Modem" but don't know if that is the proper way to install a modem or not.
This thread will tell you how to change the modem.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192436
FB also recommends one in that thread iirc. But other members have better luck with different ones. Im told it depends on your location but nobody has said which modem is better in what part of the country.
Awsome, thanks for the leg work on finding that for me! Is there a way where I could opt out of roaming so my phone uses Tmobile as a priority 'all' the time?
This is just incase the modem doesn't seem to help. Just one idea I had.
Also, KJ6 modem is the one I need correct?
Not sure of the roaming opt out.
FB puts the KG4 modem is his personal build of VB. Im using KG4. I would try all of the GB modems to see the results.

Roaming can be disabled in Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks.
My Verizon Galaxy SIII is stuck on 3G, and will not access 4G. I am using Cyanogenmod 10.2.1 (stable).
The problem started when I was travelling, and used *228 to try and improve reception. I just meant to use option 2 to update the list of towers (Preferred Roaming list), but derped and pressed 1 instead. Option 2 just updates the list of towers, while option 1 also updates the location of my Home switch. No issues making receiving calls/texts etc, but stuck on 3G data speeds.
Once I returned home from my trip, I used *228 option 1 again to fix this, but it did not.

I had the same issue for the longest time... and did everything you tried... I ended up giving up and going into the Verizon store and asking for a new Sim Card (Which is free of charge). After that BOOM 4G again! everywhere!!! I recommend going in and getting a new SIM card!

Ya No Problem....funny thing was the employee there couldn't tell I had a custom rom on my phone... regardless of him being unable to find anything on my phone lol, If worse came to worse I was just going to play dumb and say my friend "did something" to my phone to make it look different.
I did some searching around and found a couple of pages with ideas but they have not worked so far. Here's the deal, my son's said his Nexus 5 was getting pretty bad reception so I took a look at it. After some toggling of the network settings I discovered that it will only connect to LTE, not to HSPA(+) or Edge. Where we are, we have somewhat weak LTE (2 of the three towers have been "modernized" with LTE and band 2 HSPA+, one has not and it's slightly closer to us). We have a Cell-Fi repeater so we get strong HSPA+ signal in our house. His sim works fine in a Nexus 4 with the hybrid radio getting Edge, HSPA+ and LTE. My nano sim with adapter that works fine in the Nexus 4 exhibits the same problems in the Nexus 5. I tried formatting the cache from the stock recovery menu and am now looking to do a factory reset since I never did oem unlock this phone so I can't just flash a radio to test.
My gut tells me it's hardware so I have my son rebuilding his phone environment on the Nexus 4 so that we can do a factory reset to see if that helps and I'll unlock it at that point. If it doesn't fix it, I've already started the conversation with the play store. My question is, anyone else seen anything like this? Anything else I should try out?

if lte is in your area, and not a perfect signal, itll still choose to connect to lte by default. if you lose your lte connection, then itll connect to H or 3G, and so on. if you do not want it to connect to lte, go to the phones main settings, mobile networks, then change the preferred network type from lte to 3G. or you can dial *#*#4636#*#*, chose phone info, then change the network type to wcdma preferred.

Thanks for the reply, I understand all that. I don't know if I asked clearly enough or not but the problem we are seeing here is that this particular phone can only connect to LTE which is weak inside my house. So, when it tries to switch over, it just won't connect. I also tried to make a call which will switch to HSPA+ and that too fails. Going to the info menu and selecting WCDMA preferred nets me a phone that won't connect, selecting GSM results in the same. LTE only or GSM/LTE works only if it picks up an LTE signal. Ditto for selecting 2G, 3G or LTE preferred in the Mobile Networks menu. I've also reset the APN's, confirmed that the settings match my MotoX, etc and still no joy.
Just looking for ideas that someone might have that I can try before blowing away all my son's data on a factory reset or, if that fails, hardware replacement.

ok, i understand now. i didnt know that it wasnt connecting to h or 3G when it should. to me it sounds like a device ready to get an rma. i mean there is a hardware mod that could possibly fix it, but its not worth the trouble. if you can get an rma, get an rma.

Yea, according to the nice person I spoke to at the play store, I should indeed qualify for an RMA and I should find out in the next day or so. I purchased the phone new in box from someone and they were able to find the phone and they are now attributing the phone to me.
I am curious about the hardware mod though. Is this just for Edge/HSPA or is it for signal in general? If it's signal in general then I'm not sure I'd want to try it since this phone used to work just fine.

yup, thats it
but i would chose the rma route, as the nexus 5 shouldnt be behaving that way.

Yes, agreed. OK, just asking around as much as possible. I'm betting he will be getting a new phone.
