Install unlocked firmware - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can I install an unlocked firmware on a device locked to a network?

If it is compatible then yes!

What do you mean by compatible? I know that the firmware must be to my model (SM-G920F).
What I am thinking to do is to apply the firmware United Kingdom BTU. My device is from Vodafone Portugal.

No one has a answer?

The answer is YES... You can

After a bit more of investigation I have read that in some older samsung devices (galaxy S4, ...) putting an unlocked firmware on a branded phone could lead to problems. IS this still the case?

Hi Raimundo , I'm from Portugal and I have a MEO version and I wanted to know the same . I think we have to waited for the unbranded one...

There is already a unbranded one, not for Portugal but for United Kingdom. My reason to do this is to remove the carrier crap and see if I can get a better battery life.

Since the hardware is the same I don't think it does any difference if the firmware is for Portugal or United Kingdom. My only doubt is related to the branded phone with unlocked firmware. Still I would like someone with more experience to shed some light in this matter.

No one care to comment on the possibility of problems in putting an unlocked ROM into a branded phone (locked to a network)?

Yes you can but your device is still locked to the network it came on unless you unlock with a unlock code.

I have installed the firmware and until now no problems. No carrier crap
Now lets see if I see any battery consumption difference!

I was able to unlock mine two weeks ago using www.unlockunit.com. It wasn't locked on a German network, but it worked. You can try them too, maybe it works.

Since most aren't, you have to define what you have and go from there.
Unbranded?
Sent from my SM-G920T
Does it have a carrier splash screen when booting up?? If yes, then it's branded/locked
Here where come my concerns form:
In Germany, 2 times, i have bought unbranded phone and have an de-branded ... what is de branded => it's like a phone de branded (no special app, and for one no clue at starting) but the rom is O2 (or othe operator) branded... and the updates are also with these operator.
No this one has not a carrier branded. so i must be good (i hope)

Latest firmware for 920F?

Just received an unbranded new 920F that is on C0I9 firmware and appears to be from the UAE. Sammobile shows a QOLK from TIM Italy dated Jan 4 2016.
What is the latest firmware I need without getting carrier specific bloat installed (if possible). I don't want UAE firmware.
Thanks!

Thanks.. Is this branded to a French network with boot logo and bloatware? I'm so confused with with these international versions. Also, how will future updates be delivered? I'm on AT&T.

Hi. Yeah...I'm using international versions now as well. You can get updates via Kies...but I've noticed some regions get updates faster and at different times. I've found just keep track of unbranded and Odin them when u feel like upgrading. My phone was originally UAE...I just turned it into DDE (German) OK2 firmware. Runs great....ZERO bloat. It's awesome. I'm on TMO
France XEF gets fast updates trust me, and about bloadtwares it's good enough for me so is for u i hope, and no special boot logo only the original
cheers
I am unable to flash any firmware with odin without error, can you help?

Unlocked SM-G955U

Last year's S7/S7edge had a different model number for each carrier (G935A/T/V/P/R4), but this year they all seem to be using the 955U model with different CSCs for each carrier.
I noticed on SamMobile there's an unbranded firmware available for the G955U with the XAS CSC, what CSC is that? Generic?
The reason I ask this is that because these US variant phones get imported to Pakistan and some people buy them since they're cheaper than the officially sold G955F models here, so if a G955U gets imported here which for example was previously used on T-Mobile in the USA, if one flashes the XAS ROM, will it basically be an unbranded Snapdragon 835 S8+ or is removing the carriers CSC not possible?
All replies will be appreciated.
Cheers

The U version is locked and not able to root. It's used by all USA carriers and they probably made it locked down due to Samsung pay. At some point a root crack will surface but it probably won't be stable

I don't need root though.
Just the possibility of flashing an unbranded ROM with no bloat, something that won't be used with US carriers.

You cannot flash firmware without rooting on this device. That's my point. When you try flashing in Odin, nothing happens. That's why you cannot root or even flash things. Got it? You need root in this case.
I think we are after the same thing; xas is sprint from my understanding. xaa should be the "unlocked" carrier neutral you are looking for. There is a thread in the s8 forum where some people had success flashing parts of the Canadian firmware then refreshing parts of us firmware they had quasi obtained this but I have yet to try
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/how-to/rd-carrier-switch-root-snapdragon-t3597473
I read somewhere that only G955f models can change CSC firmware using Odin.
G955U models won't be able to... I could be wrong...
Then again, we won't really know until someone buys the U model and tries it out for themselves.

What did you find out? I'll try it with mine but I need help. I am by no means a schooled veteran in the world of command lines and tech talk but I can follow direction. I've managed to unbrick a couple LGLS 675 and bypass frp (for myself) a couple hundred times. I'll post a screen shot of my about phone if you guys are interested.

im using a 955f (so could be different on your phone), but just turn the phone around, on mine the S/N stands printed on the bottom of the backside, you can slightly see it ->here<-
and also I'm really not sure about that, but i believe some Serial/IMEI/whatever-numbers do stand in download mode
EDIT: By what i've found google'in, on the 955U, just the IMEI is printed. Sorry

Unlocked samsung s7 flashed with T moblie filmware

Hi guys
I had a Samsung s7 with model number sm-g930t, But it had never been t mobile since I had it. and I am with Vodafone. Now Vodafone has set up the wifi calling and this isn't working because I think I have now changed my phone back to t mobile. Does anyone know if there is different firmware that I can use?
It was unlocked

It will never work properly here (UK) as it's Qualcomm snap dragon and it was build for a different region.
You can attempt to install different firmware from UK or EU but it's really just luck if you get it to work or not.
To get wifi calling to work you will need to flash unbranded firmware, either BTU (UK) or XAS (USA). Even when you flash US unbranded as i said earlier it will not be fully functional in this region as it does not have the required hardware.

Yes if you want to use it in the UK.
Carriers in the US, T Mobile (US), Vodafone (US) etc DO NOT use the same connection standard as Vodafone, T mobile, UK. It is essential you understand this. There is no advantage to flashing UK network branded firmware, unbranded will give you all available connection options but not 100%.

SamFirm tool is a good way to get the most recent firmware files from samsung servers directly.
Otherwise it's firmware rehosts like sammobile or updato
