Stock android experience on MIUI 6 - Xiaomi Mi 4i

What should I do in order to get a stock android experience feel on the MIUI 6?
I was thinking about installing the Google Now launcher, any suggestions apart from that?
Also to keep my phone snappy and lag free, what monthly maintenance should I do? I have had horrible experience with my Galaxy Note and do not want to happen that to my Mi4i
Will it be good enough to use it without a screen protector and external cover??

Got my Mi4i today, installed the Google Now launcher and made it default... But this will not change the pull down notification/toggles shade UI or the lockscreen UI... If you want a full level stock lollipop experience, you will have to root it and then modify the ROM/flash a CM ROM, when it becomes available...
If you head over to mi.com India site, you'll get a sim card tray and screen protector from Xiaomi for free on purchase of Mi4i/redmi 2....

Weekly Maintenance: There is nothing as such which u can do apart from keeping it away from bloat wares
Using without Cover & Screen Guard would depend completely on your usage - If you can manage it like that - Go without them. I personally would be using it without any covers and stuff
If you really want a Stock Exp - Flash CM once its ported for Mi4i or any other AOSP Based ROM.

Thanks, but MIUI6 is awesome!
I used to prefer stock android, but MIUI6 just works, it has a solution for almost everything. And it is very very convenient. I am loving the ROM, especially the fusion of the best of android features with the copied elegance of iOS.
Little things like leaving the screen to where the app was last accessed makes a lot of difference.
Battery life is surprisingly awesome.
I got a screen time of 6+ hours after the first recharge, which is mind blowing.
Hope it continues.
Over all the phone is very cool in the hand and smooth in operation

i got 8+ hrs sot on first charge

MIUI 6 is pretty good!

I agree, I was (perhaps still am) a big fan of the stock experience, but the MIUI 6 is so intuitively designed and looks so gorgeous that I have started liking it!

i got a scratch on screen when it was in same pocket where i kept keys. So don't even think of using without tempered glass or screenguard. :crying:

I feel the same, Some how I do not like MIUI, I always like Stock Android experience.
Only way to experience is b installing Google Now Launcher. But this doesn't work quite well on this device. It shows black pages in App drawer and black rectangular boxes on home page...
Maybe need to wait to get this device rooted.....

miui is lagging like hell, its beauty but is lagging very very very much, i hate it

I just thought the same!
My only reason to stay on MIUI is due to its camera. I was thinking somehow remove all the memory hogging MIUI crap except the camera and install some launcher like Nova.
Need some help regarding which files are safe to remove so the phone + camera app works

non expandable storage kills the mobile or else its good

If you want to switch, flash these -
1)Resurrection Remix (ROM)
2)Snapdragon Camera V2 (Keep the camera quality intact)
3)Viper4Android (Fix bad speaker and greatly improve jack audio)
4)Sensei Kernel (no heating issues - EVER, butter smooth performance all around, nearly a 2 day battery life)
With Snapdragon Camera -
Go to settings, change Contrast, Saturation and Sharpness to Level 6(Sharpness Level 2 is horrible)
Keep in mind that these settings can reset themselves after switching between HDR and normal, so check those first.
Enable Wavelet Denoise Mode too!
For Sensei Kernel -
1) Use zzmove governor for the big cores (high power), interactive for the LITTLE cores (low power).
2) Alucard CPU Hotplug - Max cores on screen on - 8, screen off - 2
3) I/O scheduler - zen, set read ahead to 1024kB
Now head over to Configurations in the Settings menu, go to performance tuning and force GPU for 2D rendering. This will affect battery life a little but will eliminate any kind of lag.
This is all I did and I'm very, very satisfied.

Thanks for the reply . I will give RR ROM a try too.
Though I have installed the SD camera on MIUI itself but the quality is not as good as MIUI camera. I have to say though SD camera is the only replacement for custom ROMs

Power saving mode on lollipop lags more than on preview

This is one thing i have noticed that power saving mode lags a lot more in official uptate than in preview lpx13d. Has any one noticed this. Also does changing kernel n tuning cpu governors n frequencies affect power saver? i generally underclock to 2ghz and my governer is elementalx i/o is row and buffer size is 512
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
I think it's normal.
If you want no lag when using Power Saving Mode, use faux kernel.
Because it has turbo boost, and works good with Power Saving with no lag.
Yeah, I noticed lag too when battery saver was on too. I did not even have but maybe 3 apps open in recent apps. It definitely was not just a little lag either, it was pretty bad. I definitely would not say that is 'normal' considering when you put an M8 or any other device in battery saving mode, it lags absolutely nothing like that. I wonder if it is because they have the CPU too under clocked for battery saving more. Regardless of the cause that is definitely something Google needs to work out.

You can try what I suggest above. On Lollipop, the one I know is stock kernel is not the best anymore.
I personally use Hybrid Kernel. For the moment, I see it as the most updated kernel simply because all of the drivers are updated, and there's some CAF code but it works on AOSP wonderfully.
Keep in mind, there are plenty of other good kernels and I have tested them all. This is what works best for ME.
I noticed the same issue with my S4 5.0.1. Turning on power save mode causes lag especially when scrolling anda tapping. I used Root Booster in Battery mode also if it makes the lag worse.

Power Users: Post Your Optimal Setup!

This thread is intended to have power users post their best configurations so as to guide the rookies in optimizing their MXPs once they get unlocked and rooted. It's also intended to compare the best setups for battery, performance, gaming, multitasking, etc.
My main interest is in battery life, although lately I've been on the XDA Labs app like crazy and it's hurting my drain.
Constructive criticism welcome on how to improve the below records!
ROM: Stock MM Canadian
Kernel: Ultra Kernel R3
Governor: Smartmax
Frequencies: 200 big, 800 little
Xposed Framework modules: Force Fast Scroll, Lucky Patcher, GravityBox (duh!), Use USB For Marshmallow, Xposed GEL Settings
Best SOT: 8 hours
Best Drain (100% to 0%): 120 hours
Other miscellaneous tweaks: Shake Flashlight as a system app instead of double-chop (works great, just don't let go)
Launcher: Still figuring that out...but Nova and DarkLauncher are worthy contenders right at the moment
Voice Assist/Google Now on long-press Home: Disabled thanks to @pijes. Settings > Apps > Gear icon > Default Apps > Voice and Assist > None
Post below, power users! What's your best setup so far?
Bro, I would like you use Greenify and DS Battery saver
As you have xposed framework installed you can use boost mode in greenify and also
DS Battery saver also has a module so activate them and then choose slumberer and phew see your battery stats
Coming to launcher, right now Arrow launcher is good and smooth and I prefer that
Thank you!

Cool man thanks. I'll try the Greenify and DS you recommend. I've seen Greenify a lot around XDA. I'm excited to try it.
Tesla rom(seems faster/smoother then stock/anyother rom) plus Squid kernel. Governor is set to Lionfish and I/O scheduler is set to Row with 512kb readahead. Minimum frequency for the Big cluster is 800mhz and 499mhz for the little cluster. NFC and location disabled. Best battery life I ever got was with stock with the same kernel/settings configuration, had 9 hrs SOT and nearly 24 hrs overall.

I need to learn more about I/O scheduling. I've changed to Row and 512 as you recommend but where will I see the difference? When I connect to my PC? When apps access internal storage?
I've changed my governor back to lionfish. Smartmax wasn't doing it for me. 200 big 800 little. I'll look into that Tesla ROM too.
I was hoping this thread was gonna be more popular. I hope some people have gotten use out of it so far! Grow little thread, grow!

Which is exactly what I was hoping to do! Does anyone know if sweep to wake/sleep is possible with the Moto X Play? It's honestly one of the most useful features I've ever seen from rooting et al.
I'll post my setup. Been using it this way for like 2 weeks so I feel it's stable.
I'm currently running this:
Unlocked BL obviously
Stock Canada firmware (MPD24.65-18)
Rooted
Xposed Framework installed
Squid Kernel r14b
I have gravity box installed and that's really it as far as tweaks and stuff.
Averaging 5 or 6 hours SOT down to about 25% or 30%. Really depends on what I do and what network I use. Performance is great too.
I'm gonna mess around with some of this stuff tonight and see what I can do with it.

Marshmalux. Rooted. Xposed. Greenify. Powernap. Amplify.
Getting sot around 5.5 hours for my usage. Happy with that squid kernel latest r15. Lionfish on both cores

Hey hey. Thanks for posting!
I'm sure sweep to wake is possible on the phone in some way, likely through a combination of rooting and Xposed modules. I know that GravityBox has a double tap on status bar to sleep feature.
One of the nicest features of the X Play is the Moto Display. It's nice to have the phone screen come.on showing notifications without fully waking the phone. Check out the Moto Display app on the Play Store. It's a totally sexy feature.
I'd say this phone is absolutely worth it for the battery alone. I personally feel the camera to be laggy especially with focus, so consider that if you're a shutterbug. I am very hopeful that software updates will being out the power of the camera but it doesn't have optical image stabilization so blir happens more frequently, at least for me. That could be my shake fingers though.
Feel free to ask any further questions!

Good stuff. Interactive does appear to handle web pages better. I did a Wikipedia search for The Simpsons and got a huge page. I flicked down to scroll it all at once and then Chrome froze. Hahahaba. Same with Lionfish though. Maybe I'm getting greedy thinking this phone is as powerful as my PC.
Lionfish was giving me great SOT results. Like I mentored in the OP: 8 HOURS! Was so happy to see that. Blew the socks off my Nrxus 4. I average between 6.5 and 8 usually, but WhatsApp and XDA Labs are hurting those scores now.
I haven't had to Greenify any apps yet - I only hsvr geeky ones installed anyway so they never keep the phone awake.

I think @squid2 deserves a lot of credit for extending the X Play even further. His kernel and work on TWRP make the X Play even more attractive than it is out of the box.
I prefer Ultra kernel personally because I believe the dev for that (@technoander) takes the latest releases of squid's and adds features to them. I may be mistaken but that's my impression. I'll try to clarify and report back. I should do a direct comparison of Ultra and squid's latest to be as objective as is possible with a subjective test. Hahaha.
I guess I should specify a bit further - sweep/tap2wake is really only effectively useful when the phone supports some kind of low-power state for the touchscreen, otherwise the screen has to remain on in order to use it.
I'm sure sweep2sleep would be possible, but if there's no low-power state for the screen, it wouldn't really matter for me in the end. Moto display sounds like exactly what I'm talking about, though I don't know if it includes any low power mode for the touch features, as well as the display.
I'm gonna look into this a bit more, and see if I can dig up any info. It would be a hardware feature, designed-in, so it definitely should be discoverable. I figure if I can find out all the information for one of the people who have written kernels for the phone, they shouldn't have a problem emulating the feature. It's popular enough, and with the low-power state, shouldn't be too complex to implement.

Yes nearly 24 hrs before I had to recharge. As for Row you should notice it with both situations. I use it because of other phones I had before people were saying it was one of the better I/O schedulers.
Actually I have a picture of when I got it. Was nearly 23 hrs not 24 but still.

Row is essentially the best scheduler. Benchmarking is weird, because by design it's an optimized test case and not a use case. Use cases will always be variable, but generally with a smartphone writes aren't too latency-sensitive. That's why Read Over Write generally works the best once your phone is settled, because reading is most of what it does. Doesn't write too often.
There are lots of custom governors, not so many custom schedulers, and lots of suggestions, but generally stock *IS* best, and if you don't understand it, you should not change it. Governors are fun to play with but even they can cause issues if poorly coded. Changing governors will give you a huge impact on battery, but also a relative impact on performance. It all depends on the use context. You'll rarely get much battery life without a performance hit unless you custom-tune settings for your own use context.
As for read-ahead, that value is iconic of exactly what I'm talking about. It is the "chunks" of data that your OS reads in one go. So if it needs 2k, or 2m, it reads a different number of chunks, but each chunk will be the size set by I/O read-ahead. Google likes 512 best. I've been told by the dev for the EX Kernel that internal Motorola devs like 128 best. Benchmarks like the biggest value possible, because they present the OS a massive pile of data and ask it to read it all as fast as possible. In that context, a large chunk size saves time. In most contexts, you read more than you need half the time. So a low value like 128 saves battery and memory.

Android pay does this too, it's a "security" feature built-in by the devs to stop hacking. Not really necessary, but then neither are smartphones, so you take what you can get I guess. No ROM developer can work around this for you. The app is detecting any modification whatsoever. Even root may cause it.

Badass dude. 9 hours SOT is wicked.
I'm finding the phone app drains the battery like crazy. Is this to be expected?
Hey @JohnHorus - thanks for your informative post. I'm currently trying Row 128 and will report back but I doubt I'll see any real-world difference in use. Memory and battery are two soft spots for me so I'm hopeful 128 will maintain solid performance.
Looking forward to reading about others' setups!

Yeah in my experience it drains the battery more then doing other things for some reason. As you can see in my 9 hrs picture I only used the phone for like 2 minutes lol.

RIP CM14.1.1. What is the next best ROM?

I tend to hang on to my every phone for long, and when it's time to upgrade, I just like to slap updated ROM onto it and keep it a bit more. Problem is, It's been years since I stopped playing around with now ancient HTC Desire, so I'm all new to this ROM development jargon... again. And it wasn't like I grasped it fully before.
Anyway, CM is dead, and that was always my choice for Custom ROMs. Stock looking, feeling and performing, with just a few little touches to make ti more usable. Like the profiles that become active on different triggers.
So, now I wonder...
What is the best 7.1.1. ROM for Nexus 5, and by that I mean: good battery, performance, and stock look?
Does recovery play a huge role in it?
What about the kernel?
Anything else that I'm missing?
Youre talking about stock? Fake nexus rom.
I guess the only real stock is AOSP. Right?
Other than that, there are ones that look like stock, and those that are heavily skinned with Comic Sans fonts, weird color schemes and whatnot.
I loved CM for looking like stock, and having a few extra options that don't radically change the way it works.
I'll check FakeNexus ROM. Thanks!
Yes, AOSP is stock.
I personally use the AOSP Nougat ROM by Santhosh with blu_spark kernel and it's giving great performance and battery life.
This ROM is AOSP with some little features added like doube tap to sleep, volume rocker wake and night light
Even the green flickering issue by recorded videos is solved in the latest build in this ROM.

Yes, it is stable enough for daily use: celluar data, wifi, bluetooth, location, hotspot, great performance and battery life, ...
Everything works well on this ROM.
Google Camera v3.2 takes good pictures & HDR works too on v3.2. I can record videos in 1080p without stuttering and green flickering. Pictures and videos looks sharp and clear.
For me, it's like an official update from Google

My favourite setup is Pixel Experience CAF + it's stock kernel, with Servicely from Franco running to prevent wakelocks from social apps. The phone lasts two days with normal usage. Lasts a whole day with 7/8h SOT. The stock kernel is perfect, better battery than Smurf, faster than Blu.Spark, really half-way between those two kernels.
I like OOS 9.0.4 with Smurf too, or OmniRom.
But i love the Pixel 3 feel of PE. Smooth as hell, even more than OOS. On top of that it has Pixel 3 AOD, integrated with the official live wallpapers, Now Playing, Digital Wellbeing, Google Pay, Pie Gestures (which are very fluid and cool to use, unlike on OOS where they are kinda broken and unresponsive, and you can still disable them), everything works like a charm. It also has a system-wide dark mode.
RAM management is also much better than OOS, and you can remap the Alert Slider positions (I set Do Not Disturb on the top position, much better than Silence), and set vibration strengh for calls, notifications, and system.
It's not a ROM that offers tons of customizations though, apart from what i wrote above. But it's polished, super fast, and has very good battery backup.

Everything works including SlowMo, Portrait, Photosphere ... And quality is on par with OOS in lit conditions, but way better in low light. The app is especially snappy and responsive. That's not related to the ROM though, it's mostly thanks to this amazing GCam port. Best i found so far.

No problem ! Remember, this is a CAF build. So you have to Format your whole storage (not just Factory Reset) for it to boot for the first time.
It's a Security Patch issue commom to current CAF ROMs, you have to remove encryption to boot the first time. And the only way is to Format the internal storage.

Stands for "Code Aurora Forums". Basically, it's an AOSP branch maintained by Qualcomm. ROMs built on it (Like LineageOS for example) instead of pure AOSP are optimized with specific code from Qualcomm, so normally run faster and more efficiently on Snapdragon processors.
It's not a new thing, but the more you know !
Comparing the AOSP builds and the new CAF build of Pixel Experience, it is indeed faster and more responsive. Very neat.
But currently, most custom kernels aren't compatible with CAF ROMs (from what i've read anyway, haven't tried myself yet). So you won't be able to use Smurf on CAF ROMs (except if that changed haha).

Auto brightness learns your preferences so it will adapt. When it's too low, turn it up a bit, it will remember. But i never thought it was too dim.
You also have a "High Brightness mode" accessible through a quick setting in the status bar that boosts the brightness. But don't use it for more than a few minutes, it could damage the display. It gets brighter that what OnePlus intended.

Copy everything to your PC, Format your storage, transfer everything back to the phone, and flash the ROM + TWRP two times while rebooting the recovery in between to fill both slots

Hi, actually i'm using Havoc OS, i love GCam but i never could get MotionPhotos work like except. MotionPhoto length is about 1/2 or 1 second, very useless compare to my OnePlus 3. I would like to know if MotionPhoto working good on your setup

Havoc is a good choice !
I just updated to the latest GCam Stable, the 1.4, in red on this page :
https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/
Added the OP6 config file that you can download with it, Motion Photos work in Google Photos.
This build is even better that the one I linked previously, try it !
It even has Focus Tracking, which recognizes objects and keeps the focus on them when they move, it's amazing

Thanks you ! It's a little better, but not have 3 seconds of gif, only 1 second. On my OnePlus 3 with Android 8 i get a longer motion photo, on google website they talk about 3 seconds for Motion photo.
Sometime pics make Google Photo crash, it very annoying because I felt everyone does not care about Motion Photo, i'm alone with my dumb trouble

I've got around 1 second of motion too ! And yes i had a motion photo crash the Photos app once too, but it didn't happen after this ... Probably still not perfectly stable

Ok thank you, i think we cannot get better for now. I find this strange because, i see many people want TopShot feature, but with a 1 second gif, i find it not very useful.

januari stock rom

I personnaly feel this stock rom is worse then previous stock, it's not as fast and verry battery hungry i'm lucky to get 4.5 hrs of SOT. When i open a few apps it grinds to a hold and stopps opening the app all together. I flashed Oreo a few days ago and it's mutch better than the latest stock. I think people want to improve on theire firmware, not go back or down
The general thought I have is that the devices are always better with their launch rom. Every update/upgrade screws something.

Not sure if that applies to every phone but, for this phone it's definitely correct. I was using Pie/Q ROMs for a while and I was happy with them. Until I've downgraded to Oreo. In Oreo the phone is blazing fast and has insane battery life. But some apps don't work properly, especially full-screen apps like Instagram stories or photo viewing in WhatsApp. Other than that, out of all the ROMs I've tried on this phone, stock Oreo (9.6.11.0) was the best in terms of performance and battery. But I remember in my old Sony Xperia Z3 Compact, custom ROMs made the phone a beast. Unfortunately, this phone seems to get worse and worse with every update.

Not all have the same experience, as my Mi A2 Lite was very laggy with Oreo out from the box, even dialer app is very laggy. Until 10.0.3.0 came and it was snappy (not as I wanted to, but at least not as bad as Oreo on my phone). Then the June update came and it was more laggy than Oreo and I called it SD card eater as it also literalky destroyed my 2 SD cards. The jump on custom ROMs did the fix on me and I don't mind the Xiaomeme updates afterwards.
I prefer Pie over Oreo, with every security patches, I feels the phone become more smoother and snappier. I've disabled some system apps that I really don't use too much like Google, chrome and YouTube. Never tested tough with those apps enabled.

With those apps enabled, it never affected with its performance when I was on stock. Its just the June (and I think July) updates were just buggy here.

It does affected the performance, especially when playing games like PUBGM, you'll noticed the difference. Some apps (system nor user apps) do a background check, some of them always on standby state. 4 gb of RAM is large enough for multitasking but Daisy CPU not too high for handling multiple foreground and background activities. Just set your choice through the Developer Option.

I usually don't play games on my phone, and I have 3GB version.
