[Q] S6 brightness issue - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Didn't have any luck getting good response on my other thread. Posting it here.
Anyway, my S6 keeps randomly changing brightness even though auto brightness is off. And so I found this option via search within settings, which may very well be exactly what I was looking for but couldn't seem find it in the settings menu in developer option(which has already been enabled) . Any help would be greatly appreciated*

[APP] Extra Dimmer Switch - UPDATE 10-03-10 - disabling/enabling of 'Auto Brightness'

Hi People,
I had a problem, I wanted to read a book and browse web sites on my N1 at night, whilst girlfriend was trying to sleep. The Nexus One even on its dimmest setting is quite bright at night and annoys said gf, so I was looking for a way to get the screen dimmer than stock levels, similar to the night mode functionality.
Turns out the job was far more technical than I first thought, and beyond my capabilities. PM'd Cyan, but as you might expect he seems too busy with other projects to help, no surprise there!
The help came from my Android Fandroid mate Richard over at Geekyouup!
He has kindly created an application that will reduce the brightness of my beloved Nexus one to level 10 (the default minimum is 30) from what ever brightness level you are currently on. Click the icon again, and it will restore your brightness to previous levels.
Unfortunatley, due to Android fail safes, he was unable to get the level below 10, (yet) but its a step better than stock minimum for me.
I have attached the apk for your night time pleasure here.
ALL the work was done by my man Rich Hyndman (@geekyouup)
You can also get the version here:
http://geekyouup.com/dimmer.apk
P.S I love the slightly off balanced light bulb icon Rich!!
very useful
thanks!
Just tried it, works great. I've cursed under my breath about wishing I could lower the brightness.. what a wonderful idea.
Hi thanks for sharing. However it does not work when auto brightness is enabled. Is it possible to suggest to the author to support it as well?
On: Toggle off auto brightness and dim.
Off: Toggle on auto brightness.
Wysie - could do, I'm here. I know about the issue when Auto-brightness is enabled, working on it right now....
ok, version 1.0.2 is attached, now supports Automatic Brightness toggling as per Wysie's suggestion. If Automatic Brightness is on it disables and sets screen dim, second press re-enables Automatic Brightness.
Also available in Android Market and at the web link in dipeshb's post (as a 'Juniour Member' I can't post links)
Downloaded from the market and it works great. Thanks mate.

Too high brightness?

Is there a way to lower the brightness of the screen, lower than the Low setting? At the Low brightness, its still to high to use in the dark.
Any reg hack or something?
Bump, anyone?
If you use the adaptive lighting (automatic adjustment), it should be pretty dim in a dark room.
If that's not enough, there are probably regisrty settings that control the brightness at each level, but you'll need to find them and figure out how to modify them.
I suggest starting with the Registry Tweaks thread on the dev & hacking sub-forum. Somebody may have discovered it already. Search is your friend!

I did search, I'll see again, btw, I am using adaptive lightning, and it hurts my eyes. but on manual setting set to low, it's convenient, thx for the reply
wish there was a lower setting as well.
I notice right before the screen auto turns off after 30 seconds, it dims slightly lower than it can be set to via settings.
Did anyone found the registry to change for the brightness?

Have you tried turning off Adaptive Display? It's in Settings/Display/Screen Mode. Try any other mode besides adaptive and see if that fixes it.
If your screen still changes brightness on it's own take it in, it's most likely faulty.

HI thank for the reply. I have switched from modes to modes but it happens randomly(perhaps lighting conditions?) I suspect it's settings shown on my screenshot(according to the description) on the first post that may have been toggled on by default? But I have no luck finding that very option in developer's menu. And my power saving and auto brightness are off. Are you able to find the option?
I have had the same issues with my Note3 and Note 5. Mostly when I'm watching fullscreen video. I have to set it to maximum brightness to see outside during the day in Las Vegas because the sun is bright. But if my phone light sensor (right next to the ear speaker) is not in direct sunlight, then it doesn't keep the brightness for video. Your screen shot isn't visible though I went the rounds thinking it was a Hulu bug for a long time before I realized it happens in ask video players and isn't constant.

Question Anyone with Tasker that can give me the variable for high brightness mode?

Does anyone have Tasker and can go to Tasks > (Create one or use one existing) > Custom Setting > press the magnifying glass > flip the toggle high brightness mode in settings and press the magnifying glass again?
There it should show what kind of variable has been found (global, system or secure) and what its name is.
I want to try if that works on the S21 Ultra with OneUI 4.1 aswell if I set it manually. Thanks!
Couldn't specifically find "high brightness mode", but "screen_extra_brightness" is a secure setting. Tasker says it can toggle this, but if you're not rooted it needs the extra Write Secure Settings permission added via adb
Is this what you were looking for? (I wish I knew more about Tasker)

Unfortunately not, but thank you for the effort. There is a toggle in the S22 Ultra for enabling "extra brightness" (under display settings) that will allow the screen to go brighter. Your screenshot shows a change in brightness due to manual changing or adaptive brightness changing it.
Could you check "extra brightness", toggle it while recording it with Tasker? Really appreciated if you can do this. If not, I totally understand. I hate asking such questions but I gave my S22 Ultra away and forgot to write the name down for when OneUI 4.1 is released on the S21U
Sorry for the delayed response, but hope this is what you need.

Thank you very, very much! It did not work unfortunately, but I'm glad I could give it a shot on my S21 Ultra.
Thanks for the time and effort!

Also thanks for your time and effort! The variable you've posted was the correct one. I just wasn't sure if it isn't the right one or if it is not working on the S21U. Seems like it is the latter. But worth a try. Thanks again!
The app "High Brightness Mode" turns on that extra high brightness by setting the screen brightness to some crazy high value. I think by doing that, it enables the screen brightness to go as high as it needs to. However, the only way to get to that extra brightness is when adaptive brightness is on and it senses direct sunlight. I find that trying to do it manually won't yield any success because it's triggered off the light sensor only and that can't be manually altered unless you're rooted.
