My wife's nexus 5 seems to be shutting off randomly. Now I've had android long enough to know occasional random reboots are unavoidable but hers isn't rebooting it's just shutting down. Like this morning she went to get it off the charger and it was turned off. Also she'll pull it out of her pocket and it'll just be shut off. Hardware issue or known lollipop 5.1 issue? Seems to me random reboots are more common when it's software related. Never heard of a bad ROM causing a phone to shut down entirely
Is the power button stuck?
I have the problem :/

I would highly recommend that you flash completely back to stock kit kat and test, es Kit Kat because many users are have issues with 5.1 currently so it could be a bug.
The only other time I've had the issue you mentioned is when tinkering with my galaxy s insides. So unless you did that and aren't telling then no reason hardware related it should be doing that. hope it helps.
Yeah I never have messed with the insides, hell on her phone it's still stock locked bootloader and all. I did a factory reset which also wiped the user storage partition. Guess I could try kitkat, though she wasn't very happy after the reset lol. But at this point we're talking about making a square trade claim anyway so it's worth a shot

Just rooted my Sensation and everything went just fine. Achived root and all my root apps works. But:
Yesterday I got my Evo 3D battery and to give it the best start possible i turned the phone off (took out the battery and put it back in) to charge it overnight.
When I woke up this morning the phone wouldn't turn on and the led was blinking orange. Luckily I had my old battery so I could just pop that in to get the phone going. Tried to turn the phone completely off with this battery and this won't charge either. Charging will work just fine when the phone is turned on.
Looked over to the Evo 3D forum and there are several users experiencing the same problem.
Anyone got a solution?
Solution: Get the new Clockwork Recovery mod- v4.0.1.5
Same here. Kinda sucks! Hope a fix comes. do you have a link to the thread in the evo 3d section?
Same problem here, on a UK Vodafone Sensation with ENG S-OFF
my phone charge when off maybe somthing went wrong with you guys s-off
Mine charges when off as usual.
T-Mo S4G
Might be seeing the same thing on my S-off Bell Sensation when truly off (not just screen off or HTC fastboot off)...will need to do some more testing to see what is going on...
Samen here.
Phone is off, light goes orange and after 3 sec it starts flashing orange.

It only happens when the phone is truly off. Shut down in the menu doesn't turn the phone off, only hibernates it.

same happened to me, managed to get back in by going into fastboot then recovery then android.
was nearly a trip into town to buy an universal charger.
I just flashed the RCMix3D Aztec ROM by capychimp and my Sensation charges while completely off
EDIT: OK, no it doesn't. An orange light showed up after I removed the battery and inserted the cable, but I looked down and it had gone off. No luck when I put the cable back in, either
Can anyone help as to how to get my phone to turn back on??? Same as everyone else...i get a blinking orange light but it wont turn on!!! Please help!!!

Try removing the battery then turning on as normal.
I too was having this issue. Turned my phone off last night and put it on the charger only to wake up to a phone with the flashing orange light. I pulled the battery 3 times to get it to work and still couldn't get the phone to turn on. Finally I plugged my phone into the charger and left it for about 15 minutes and the phone was then able to turn back on. For some reason the phone never charged last night and the battery was dead, which is why the orange light was blinking.
Edit: Just tried to turn phone off again and charge it and now it's blinking green/orange. Guess I'll just have to charge it while it's on from now on until this is figured out.
ordered one of these just in case so i won't have this worry in future.
universal phone battery charger.

I do not recommend to use "universal" chargers for lithium-ion, lithium polymer batteries.
This can significantly reduce their lifespan.
P.S.
Tmous Sensation, S-OFF (Rev).
Remove -> insert battery, charging working with phone off =\
well im experiencing the same thing when phone is completely off but i was also reading in the htc vo 3d thread that their having the same issue and one person flashed a different recovery img and confirmed that its now working so im guessing the recovery img on the sensation is the problem why it isnt working.
Mine won't charge while off. No biggie since I'm used to that with NAND on my HD2.
Does this mean you cannot charge the phone at all if the phone is off and the battery is completely drained?
I know some of you aren't going to believe this but all I did was plug an HDMI cable in and now it won't turn on. Plugged it into the tv, then the phone. Phone completely locked up and turned black. Was totally unresponsive. Waited a few minutes and yanked the battery. Now it's stuck in a boot loop. I get the motorola logo, virgin mobile logo, and then it restarts endlessly. I rather not return it because of all my personal info on it. Any ideas how to either fix it or wipe all my stuff from it?
...yeah I don't believe you. But what matters lol, I don't think there's anyway to restore your data. You can fix it by installing Clockworkmod and flashing an uploaded backup. Just search a little bit for it.

Yeah, I said that because I wouldn't have believed it either. I swear, I did nothing to it. Was working fine all day. Got an HDMI cable in the mail today. Plugged it in and infinite boot loop...
vol +, vol -, & power is supposed to get you to recovery, no? I just get an android with a "!" in a triangle. Think it's toast?

OMG! I'm back up and running. Here's what I did to fix it:
From start up hold Vol+, Vol-, Power. When you see the android let go of the buttons. Press home once (that's what confused me at first). This will bring up the menu. Vol+ moves up. Vol- moves down. Back arrow is to select. First I wiped cache partition with no luck. Next I chose "wipe data/factory reset". I have to reinstall everything but at least it works now.
I'm too lazy to look for it, but I saw a thread somewhere about 3 weeks ago about cheap hdmi cables toasting people's phones.
Glad to hear it's fixed! Did you try the cable again?
I bought a 15 foot cable from monoprice and it works fine for both mine and my wife's Triumph.

I'm hesitant. I think I'm going to double check it with a multimeter first and make sure there are no shorts.

That's scary. You think you're saving yourself a few dollars buying a cheap wire and it ends up taking out a few hundred dollar device.
i definitely believe it. the hdmi mirroring works fine until i disconnect the cord from the phone. sometimes my phone's screen just remains black and won't respond to anything. only thing i can do is a battery pull. hopefully it isn't an issue with the hardware..
Sorry for the over dramatic title, but it usually attracts in more views.
I'm from Canada, and was using a Lg Optimus 2x p999, which in the states is a tmobile G2x.
The first time i used nvflash, it went through, but the phone wouldn't boot clockworkmod. It just showed the stock android. I re-did it, and it began to work.
I installed cyanogenmod stable 7.10.1, then installed a nightly v.201. IT was in a boot loop, but clearing the cache fixed that. Next, i installed a bad theme that killed the phone (bootloop again). Finally, i reinstalled the nightly, then installed a theme from this site.
so, it had :
Cyanogenmod 7 nightly 201 for lg g2x,
colorized for most roms theme pack (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1121299)
I plugged the sucker in over nighty to charge. It was around ~34% charged when i plugged it in. Now, i get absolutely nothing from it. I tried to plug it without battery, with battery, boot into clockwork, but the phone doesn't respond at all! it's as if it died over night

Might sound dumb but your 100% it was charging? I plug it in sometimes and it is not charging until I move or wiggle it... maybe it just died by the battery. Plug it in leave it for about 10 minutes see if the battery logo comes up. 2nd plug it in to the computer does anything happen computer recognize the device any signs of life?

i'm sending mine to lg tomorrow. thursday night i fell asleep to some talk radio with phone plugged in. friday morning, alarm woke me up as usual. phone was plugged in all night. on my way to work, battery died.???? i plug in my car charger and get nothing from the phone. i then notice the micro usb port is extremely loose. i left it plugged in for an hour or so and it finally booted. i couldn't get the charging screen unless i had the plug just a certain way.
so maybe just leave it plugged in for an hour or so and see what happens.
this happened to me overnight

Hi,
I just bought a 2nd hand infuse 2 weeks back. I was using the stock GB for a while, and the phone was restarting sometimes. To fix this and get ICS features, I rooted and moved to the ICS CM9 ROM. Still the restarting didn't go away. I flashed everything before installing the rom. So, I guess this can't be an issue with either of the roms but probably something else. Also, when the restart happens the battery gets drained significantly.
After some searching, I saw in some threads that memory issues can do this or probably a bad app (I only have popular apps only though). I was wondering is there a way whether I can some info to debug the problem, when this restart happens?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
It might not be a ROM issue but a faulty power button. The are several threads on this. You may want to search "power button".

Hmmm, the power button seems to work alright. But if the power button is always pressed, I shouldn't be able to press it again and make it function properly, right? All the functions of the power button seem to be doing OK, i.e. menus pop up and it puts the phone to sleep mode, etc.
Is there anything more I can check to confirm that it is not the power button?
Is there a way to get a thread dump or any other log at the time of restart?
A few more details -
- I believe it goes to a boot loop when it restarts (loops from the cm logo back to samsung
- goes to a charge loop if I connect to a charger
- long holding the power button at this time restarts the phone and brings it back to normal
- I notice it happens a lot at the lock screen, but it happens at other times too, still to figure out a pattern

I have the exact same problem. Please let me know what you and people come up with.
Battery drops at least 4 or 5% after those random reboots.
I put liquid smooth JB on the infuse and was able to reduce the reboots to maybe 1 or 2 a day but the battery drain is still insane. from full to empty in 7 hours (but the battery usage says 17hrs, so please dont be confused, its really only 7hrs), texting, checking emails but nothing else. no music, or gps or anything that it intense.
The battery usage shows a constant battery drain, everything is at either 5 or 10% usage, except the screen which is at 42 - 60%

Any ideas?
I've managed to get some logs when this happens using alogrec (attached). I haven't worked with the dalvik kernel or android apps much to understand what is going on.
I hope someone would be able to go through them and pick up something. My knowledge on the subject is not enough to pick whether anything is wrong here.
Also, I noticed sometimes the battery drops from around 30% to a whooping 5% when this happens. So, maybe this is a faulty battery problem??

I ordered a new battery and hope that this will fix the problem, if anyone knows anything else please let me know. the battery is only 1 year old.
I had similar symptom (reboot followed by battery indicating lower) once when I had applied too much undervoltage applied.
I've had the same things happen with my phone.
1) the huge drops in battery isn't an actual drop. 99% of the time if you don't plug in a charger the battery will start 'charging' on it's own until it gets to the right amount.
2) just because the power button works doesn't mean there isn't something wrong. The infuse is notorious for messed up power buttons. There is a thread around here somewhere about fixing it. I've not done it because I managed to get things under control.
3) I've noticed that the reboots seem to occur more frequently when a large number of apps ( popular or not) are installed, or apps that are resource intensive. For instance I bought minecraft because my daughter has become adducted to it. Sometimes its fine other times it freezes and reboots. My solution is to only keep apps I use on my phone. I will most likely uninstall minecract until a later date.
4) For me smaller ROMs work better. The current slimrom works the best for me. Also finding time to remember to reboot my phone once a day no matter how it is running helps.
I'm down to a reboot every one or two days now. Unless I try to play minecraft. I blame those damn creepers. Good luck!

Hi,
I have the same issue, received the phone from china yesterday and will only charge when the phone is turned off.

Ive tried different usb cords and wall chargers all the same outcome.
Would it be a software issue?
and would flashing an updated rom fix issue?

Thanks for the help.
So if the connector is disconnected it can still charge and get power?
Though if that is the case ill have to send it back to the supplier as it is 2 days old, which means $30 shipping and a month or so waiting for a replacement.

First before sending check that the drivers are properly installed.
Due to the connector, I let myself to recognize the PC as the connector goes from the load plate to the main board, this problem you happened to many people, after a fall of the phone will even have come to put paper below so as not to release more.
You can do the test pressing on the connector by removing the battery and putting the mobile on a towel to see if it connects, it does not remove it.
(sorry for my English i use google translate)

The supplier got back to me saying the factory informed them it could be a back board issue? whatever that means?
I can return it or they can send out a new back board.
So not sure what to do?
Thinking about returning it and getting a full refund and trying another supplier?
Promblem is with charging iocean x7s! It can be charged only if it is turn off!!
Can I solve this problem?
