Soft keys are very dim - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all, for some reason the soft keys on my phone are very dim. So dim that the only time i can see them illuminate is at night.
I was curious, is there something I could edit, maybe in the build prop or somewhere ells to turn them up even more than stock? I have a custom cm12.1 rom already installed, but their turned up all the way already.
I was hoping there was a way to bypass it and turn them up even more. Anyway thanks for any help.

It's a known issue, they're all like that. And no, there's no way to change it.

Are we talking about the on-screen (software) keys, or the capacitive keys below the screen (hardware)?
The capacitive keys are indeed dim. I suspect the lights behind the keys themselves aren't actually dim, but the plastic in front is heavily tinted so it's less noticeable should the owner choose to use on-screen keys instead of the capacitive ones.

Does Froyo fix the button lights timeout issue?

Does anyone with Froyo know if there is a new timeout adjustment for the bottom button lights? I cannot believe that this would not be fixed. It's the single most annoying thing about the phone. Even aside from the problem of the lights going out after like 3 seconds, they don't even light up when you hit the power button to wake up the phone! How dumb is that? My GPS is fine. I want a button light fix!

Unfortunately not.
Haven't you gotten used to it by now? It was annoying for me for the first week. Now, I could press any of those keys with my eyes closed.

Have you tried looking in various settings databases on the device itself?

Yeah, I know where the buttons are without looking, but if you hit them with the tip of your finger, you have to hit them right in the center. In the dark, I end up missing 1 in 4 times. If they were lit up like it should be, I'd never miss them. Since those buttons are used so much, it's just ridiculous that they aren't lit up the same time as the screen, or at least have a setting for them. To me, it's the worst design flaw of the phone, and actually, for me, it's really the only flaw. Since it wasn't fixed, I'm guessing the lights aren't tied to the OS. Maybe it's tied directly to the hardware, which would really suck.

I looked through all of the settings. I don't have Froyo, but climber1872000 said there's no setting for it.

[Q]Two LEDs on the front of phone?

There are two leds on the front of my inspire i obviously know what the one that is under the speaker mesh is for (lights up during notifications) But what is the one to the right for? Iv never seen it light up and i searched and couldnt find any thing about it.
Im basically just wondering, Thanks for any help in advance.
It is a proximitiy sensor, turns the screen off while your in a call. So while its up against your ear, you dont press buttons with your face.
Not 100% on this but Im guessing its used for the automatic screen brightness.
Oh ok, I honestly didnt even think of that lol. It just looks so much like an LED to me atleast lol.
Thanks for the quick answer.

Plus I need 10 characters.

[Q] Configurable BLN

I was reading about BLN and from what I read it appears that you can only turn all of the LED's on or off at once. When pressing any of the capacitive buttons, however, the LED turns off while all the others stay on. Does anyone know what's going on here and would we be able to take advantage of this to configure patterns for BLN (different LED's turn on for different types of messages)?
That pertains to the kernel if its not in the BLN app on the market. I haven't really checked the app but you can to see if it has that configuration. I'm pretty sure it doesnt though. Keep checking kernels for that.

It's one LED for the whole button layout, so you cannot manage them separately.
And the button you press doesn't turn off, you move your finger on it, thats why it's off lol.

Haha. Yes I realize my finger is covering the button. What I'm saying can easily be seen in the lock screen. If you press the edge of the capacitive button you can see the led for that selected button is dimmed (before I thought it was turning off fully but it seems to only be dimmed). There must be an control for each individual LED that we could take advantage of.

I am under the vague impression you are talking about some other phone. Nexus S doesn't do that, I believe Galaxy S does it. None of NS's capacitive button backlights turn off while pressing them. Besides, kernel devs would have found this long ago.

This is very strange that it doesn't occur for you. I have an i9020a Nexus S and this is definitely happening on my phone.
it happens, especially during boot. Pressing on one dims the one you touched.

I've seen it happen on mine too. Never thought much of it.

if you go to the phones main settings, security, lockscreen, then turn off the lockscreen, you can wake the device with the volume buttons.

Yes, this is a way.
There is a lot of way to wake up the phone, for example you can flash a kernel with Touch Wake support (just touch the screen to wake the phone).

Why? Nexus s has a capacitive screen, so if you don't touch it with your fingers or with something that's an electrical conductor, the screen shouldn't turn on...am I wrong?

i would think so too, but..
tell that to my phone that not only opened applications while in my pocket, when i was using touchwake, but once opened the rootbooter app then booted into recovery and wiped my dalvik
You can check al_madd's guide on Nexus S with Power button broken:

You can call your phone, then it will wake up

Backlight seems to not work anymore probably because of Magisk

Hello,
The display of my OnePlus-One is very very dark. I can barely see anything. I think it's because the backlight is not working. The last thing i did was updating Magisk from 12 to 13.1.
Here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3t/help/blackscreen-magisk-update-t3576571 other people also have problems with black screens after Magisk update. But other than them, i also had a blackscreen on recovery menu (There i couldn't see anything, probably because the colours are too dark). Via adb/fastboot i did a factory reset...Nothing changed. I also installed the stock rom again but it didnt help. I dont think it is a hardware error because it happened right after the Magisk Update. Can you please help me? Could it be something with the Kernel?

masterflolo

Looks like a hardbrick.Try this,

Use winxp or win7 to avoid driver issues.READ THE OP CAREFULLY!
Thx for the fast reply. I used the Tool and it changed the Rom succesfully but the backlight still doesn't work. I don't think it is a brick because the phone works normal, it's just the backlight that won't turn on

Then it's a hardware issue, need to change digitizer+LCD(display) of the device.
I tested the phone with a old Display which i changed because the glass was broken. With this Display the backlight still doesn't work. So i don't think it is a Hardware issue. And why should the Hardware break right after i updated magisk? I don't know much about the Kernel, but could it be that magisk changed something there and now it doesnt "tell" the backlight to turn on?

No! A mod (heck, even a non-working kernel!)cannot turn your device's display backlight dead! But yes,it can make your device hard brick.
Can you hear sounds of call and stuff? If yes, then it's definitely the display at fault.
If not, then it's definitely a hard brick,in that case you must try the link that I gave in above posts.
Well time for a new phone i quess.. Yes i can hear sound of call and so on, like i said it works normal. But i tried it with my old Display and it's the same problem. Could something on the Mainboard be the reason for it?

You are hasty to blame Magisk. It would be more reasonable to consider the screen replacement as cause of a screen issue than think of Magisk as the cause.

Yes it was working, the only problem was that it didn't react when i touched near the cracks. But the Display worked.

Can you change the backlight ic without ordering a new Motherboard? Do you know a site where they sell them? Or is it not possible as a newbie because you need to solder it?

No,you'll have to replace the whole motherboard itself.
But I think you should get your device checked by a professional.
