[Q] [CM12S] MX Player not playing in H/W+ anymore - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
Since I have upgraded to Cyanogen OS 12S - or CM12S, as you prefer - MX Player is not able to play movies with H/W+ decoding.
I also noticed a bigger drain in battery over time with this combination (only H/W and CM12S).
Does anyone knows why is this happening?
Does anyone know how to fix it?
I also noticed that, with this update, playback of H.265 is much smoother now.
Thank you in advance.

I have the same issue
Does anyone have an answer for this? It use to work fine in CM11S

Same issue, but worse.
Got the same issue. But now HW stopped working as well. (Including recorded video playback from gallery). Only MX player SW works.
Don't know if it's related to xposed. Planning to do a system upgrade again and check.

I updated and checked, it still didn't work. But HW worked after I disabled developer tools and enabled it back. However, HW+ is still not working.

I could only get S/W working in CM12S.
I'm running CM12.1 nightly now and H/W works, but still no H/W+

I have same problem mx player will not play many vids it used to play easily online especially 3gp and i have the backup players for mx player also they dont help just does loading and wont play all decoders dont work. would somebody please tell me what to do or mx player please fix the decoder issues

From what I read, the problem is not with MX Player, but with Android Media Library in COS12 - some changes that are incompatible with MX so we have to wait if it's fixed in COS12.1.

[Q] Video never starts playing

I just purchased MX Player Pro from the Google Play store and have v1.7.40 (neon)installed on my Nexus 6. Since I have a lot of video files with AC3 audio, I installed the custom AC3 codec found here on XDA (automatic restart applied). After that, I configured MX Player Pro to use HW+ decoding and failover to HW decoding.
I can't seem to get videos to play at all. I open a video and it sits there like it's on pause. I've tried multiple video files and get the same result. Most are x.264, one is x.265. I've tried changing it to HW decoding as well as SW decoding but get the same result. I've force stopped the app and tried again after clearing the app data and telling it NOT to use the custom codec but still get the same result. Am I doing something wrong? I really like MX Player Pro but I'm going to need to refund it if I can't get it to work.
EDIT: On some videos that I start, if I manually fast forward, I don't see any video at all. On the x.265 video, I can manually fast forward and see the video frame of where it's at in the timeline but it just never plays.
END EDIT
On a side note, after launching MX Player Pro for the first time, I was not prompted to install the codec package so I installed it manually.
Thanks so much to anyone who takes the time to read this and/or assist with this matter.
Well, assuming by "codec package" you mean the ARMv7 Codec package on the Play Store, you don't need these codec packages by default. On the contrary, the fact that you installed the custom codec may be what's causing the playback issue.
The Custom Codec on XDA here is purely for AC3 and DTS audio compatibility, and generally shouldn't affect video playback.
To be certain, are you using the stock Nexus 6 ROM? If yes then which build in particular?
Also, if you could collect an error log after it freezes, that would help.

@phoney_stuff
H/W+ may cause issues with certain videos. I don't recommend it to use it as default.
Just try to start the video in S/W decoder (log press the video & from menu > play using > SW decoder.)
Don't resume if it asks.
Let me know the results.
If you still have issues, kindly collect the logs immediately after playing the video & upload here.
@CDB-Man
As you know Custom codec is same as the inbuilt ffmpeg which comes with mx player itself. But, ac3 & dts support is enabled. So, it may not be the issue.
Both H/W+ & S/W decoders use ffmpeg. If the issue is there in S/W it might be an issue related to ffmpeg itself.
Gentlemen,
Thanks for the reply!
I'm running stock Android 5.1.1 on a non-rooted device, latest version, screenshot attached.
My first attempt was without the codec that's is available on the Play store, but with the custom AC3 codec. When that failed, I installed the codec from the Play store and got the same result. Then I tried it again after removing the custom AC3 codec (leaving the codec available from the Play store in place) and, again, got the same result. In a past experience of playing videos in MX Player with AC3 audio without the custom codec, the video would play without audio which is what I was hoping to achieve as a troubleshooting step (to see if the custom codec was causing a problem).
Currently, I have MX Player Pro installed with the codec that is available on the Play store as well as the custom codec to play AC3 audio. This is the config which we're basing our tests on as of now. Please let me know if I should remove the codec that I downloaded from the Play store. Also, I deleted the x.265 video that I mentioned in my previous post and obtained another video encoded in x.264. Regardless of this, it's important to note that I get the same result with ANY video I attempt to play. I'm attaching my loss for your review as requested. In this test, I have HW+ fully disabled in settings and SW decoding fully enabled. I also choose to start the video from the beginning rather than resume. Again, thanks so much for the help. Please let me know if there is anything else I can provide to help troubleshoot this issue.
@phoney_stuff
The issue is not with MX Player.
MX Player is not getting audio focus.
Looks like some other app is trying to keep the audio focus. That's why mx player is not playing any video.
Goto Settings > Player & Disable "Play Alone"
Then try again.
Note:
If you disable the option "Play Alone" MX Player will keeps on playing the video regardless of the status. For e.g it won't pause if you receive a call. So, best solution is that find the app that is stealing the audio focus & uninstall it or if there is any particular Settings in that app kindly adjust it.

That did the trick, or it could be that I'm not currently using the phone that did the trick.... or both. VIC works while I'm on the phone so I guess I was expecting MX Player to do the same.
I'm going to leave Play Alone disabled since I like the option of playing audio our video when I'm on the phone.
Would it be too much for me to request an feature (toggle-able) to have MX Player to pause when it loses audio focus?

As in, using your version shouldn't in and of itself cause playback issues! As in, the issue is likely not caused by the fact that you are using the custom codec, but probably something else!

Enabling "Play Alone" does precisely just that? As in, make MX stop playing when it loses audio focus if another app plays...
@CDB-Man enabling Play Alone also prevents it from playing when it doesn't have a audio focus to begin with.

This is what the issue is.
Just find out the app that steals/keeps audio focus. Disable it or uninstall it.
You can now play even when "Play Alone" is enabled.
This is used to pause MXPlayer when you loose audio focus (like call or notification or alarm or Playback from another player). That's why it's enabled by default.
It's not the fault of MX Player.

Thanks be to you, I found the app that's keeping audio focus is the phone. I like the feature of Play Alone that pauses MX Player when it loses audio focus. However, I it would also be nice if MX Player allowed me to play audio our video) while I'm currently in a call without having to toggle Play Alone on/off all of the time.

MX Player HW+ Problems

Hello I've been having one really annoying issue with my beloved MX player which I love which is that the HW+ decoder either tells me it won't play videos I have through Plex app I have stored on computer or that it switches from HW+ to SW and SW doesn't play the videos properly they lag or play out of sync or the app crashes.
Now I know these videos where HW+ fails to work actually has played in the past though I would say that I recently flashed stock sony rom then using CWM flashed a custom rom but I did all this to try get HW+ to play my plex videos where it wouldn't either switch to SW or not play at all when the videos have played fine in the past.
I use MX player 1.7.40 (ARMv7 Neon)
Custom Codec 1.7.32 for AC3 Audio support
Phoenix Final Custom Rom for Xperia P using Nemeis Kernal 6.3
I understand that you guys need the logcat information and I read the thread about how do do that but I ran into a problem that when I downloaded the logcat app for mx player it returns an error "Cannot access the system log"

If you are using custom rom, they might have modified the Android Media Framework. It will break the MX Player's HW+. If it's not working Just turn it off & use HW instead.
MX Player 1.8 final is expected to get alternative HW+ engine that may work in most of the devices. Kindly be patient till that

MX player stopped working on Nexus 9

Since the last update MX player is no longer working properly on my Nexus 9 tablet.
Strangely enough the option of using HW+ decoding has completely disappeared from the settings/decoder menu.
I use MX player mainly to play HD streams from my satellite receivers via DVBLink TV server.
SD channels still play with SW decoding.
HD/FHD channels so far have always played with HW+ decoding but that option has now disappeared, and these channels will not play properly with SW or HW decoding.
I'm using licenced MX player PRO.
Is it possible to go back to the previous version of MX player?
Is there a versions history somewhere that lets you download?
Would you check if HW+ is sitll not working on 1.8.6?

Sure.
Just updated to 1.8.6 and HW+ is now present again on Nexus 9. :good:
Playback with HW+ seems to work fine too.

Phone crashes when seeking HEVC

Phone: Google Pixel XL
Android 7.1.1
Stock ROM
MX Player v1.8.10
MX Player Custom Codec installed, HW+ encoding enabled
Ok so here's the thing, when i play a HEVC video (any resolution,8 bit or 10 bit doesnt matter either) it plays fine as long as i dont try to forward/seek. As soon as i do that, my phone crashes and reboots. This happens on HW+, but not on SW. Also, i thought the Pixel had hardware decoding for HEVC but im not able to play the video in HW decoder in MX Player.
Since the phone crashes, i dont think i can gather any logs either. Any help ?

Regarding HW+ crash, it needs logs to be collected from ADB as a system reboot will erase everything. I will ask the developer to check it out as I don't have a pixel device to test it out.
Regarding HW issue, are you playing a HEVC on MKV container..? If it's so, It's an issue which is to be solved by google. HW decoder is wrapper of Android Mediappayer API. On Nexus/Pixel devices Google doesn't implemented HEVC on mkv container. If you just remux it to mp4 (I mean without re-encoding), the video can be played in HW. So, MX Player has nothing to do with HW decoder.

Oh ok thanks for clarifying the HW issue.
Btw, if you could point me to a guide on how to collect logs from adb, I'd be happy to help.

So what is the solution for this?
I myself having a OnePlus 3T and having same bug as crashing MX player and rebooting the device by itself when I play HEVC on mkv container.

Try again after enabling Alternative HW+.
Based on another report on another thread, It's basically a firmware issue & user has mentioned that leaked Nougat build has fixed the issue. Just be patient till the next system update.

No hardware decoding on H96 Max

Hi.
Recently bought H96 Max TV-Box and installed MX Player Pro on it.
But player can't play HEVC H265 videos in HW mode.
When trying to switch to HW mode it says it is not supported.
HW+ option is greyed out(not available) at all.
Currently using SW method but video playback is very bad with this method and it is impossible to watch with this method.
TV-Box based on RK3399 processor that claims full H265 hardware decoding support and I know it does because built in players can handle this file without problem with smooth playback.
How can I get smooth hardware decoding in player at this device?
hi, I'm going to receive this TV Box as well,
have you solved this problem? I'm a bit afraid of that...

Hi,
Actually, the issue is that system decoders in your device do not report that they can support HEVC 10bit profiles. So, MX Player does not try the hardware accelerated playbacks as several devices are known to crash when force decoding 10bit HEVC & H.264.
Based on some feedbacks from the users like you, we have decided to make this logic as optional. From 1.9.19, even if the device doesn't explicitly report it's capabilities, MX Player will list the HEVC 10bit & H264 10bit on HW+ Video Codecs list on Settings > Decoder. It can be enabled with a warning. Once you enable the HEVC 10bit or H.264 10bit, it will be tried in both HW & HW+.
We have already started rolling out the new version in stages. If you haven't received yet, you can manually grab the apk from our wesite & try yourself. Kindly leave a feedback after testing the same in your device.
