[Q] Phone doesn't boot TWRP Recoveries - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I just flashed the cm12s ota and now I am trying to re root my device. So I tried a couple different versions of twrp but none of them boot up when I run "fastboot boot recovery.img". This command worked very well in kitkat and that was what I used to check if the recovery was okay.
Can anyone please help me?
EDIT: Just flashed and it worked. I have no clue what happened the first few times. MODS PLEASE CLOSE THIS THREAD NOW! THANKS

TWRP 2.7.0.0 doesnt start after flashing

Hi guys,
I have searched long time to find a solution for my problem...no chance.
At the moment i'm on a jellybean rom(viper) and have s-off and hboot 2.15.
I tried to flash a kitkat and lollipop compatible recovery with fastboot. Cmd writes that the recovery was successfully installed but after trying to start recovery i only get a blackscreen and after three seconds a reboot into the rom. Every recovery before 2.7.0.0 works fine. Same problem with CWM.
I hope that someone can help me.

While in recovery (the one that's working for you), mount sdcard and delete the .twrps file from TWRP folder on your sdcard. Then reboot to fasboot and flash again the latest official TWRP. Reboot to recovery and see if it's solved
Sent from nowhere over the air...
I have done that but it doesn't work. Still don't boot. I've tried it several times. Any other solution?

That's strange.... Try to delete the whole TWRP folder in this case, see if it helps

Finally i have solved the problem by flashing an unbranded original 2.15 hboot. I have found the solution in another thread. Thank you for your help.

[Q] TWRP flash says successful... but stock recovery is still there?

Hey Guys. Im running cm12s on my oneplus one, and i would like to switch to oxygenOS because they are getting the touchscreen firmware fixes. Ive flashed recoveries onto multiple phones without this issue before.
I downloaded twrp, booted the phone into fastboot, unlocked it, got the success signal, flashed it, again, success, and then rebooted. Then i powered down and booted to recovery aaaand..... stock recovery. WTF? So i wipe all user data and clear the cache with the stock recovery and try again. Nope. Its still the stock recovery. i dont understand it. I tried with CWM aswell. It says success, so why did it not work? I booted into the OS and checked developer settings, and disabled update recovery and all that, Nevertheless, when i flash TWRP or CWM, it does not work. I dont understand how this could happen.
I followed the steps from the Official guide on the official oneplus forum, It wont let me post a link.
I am using an OEM samsung cable.
Can anyone help me?

Alright, I've just tried that. After flashing it, i Ran this command and as expected it rebooted back to the bootloader. Nothing else todo there, so i rebooted and booted to the recovery. It STILL boots to the stock recovery! So i tried again, but this time, i flashed it a second time after rebooting to the bootloader, but that still has not worked. is my unit defective? I will try now with another computer.

I figured it out!
I figured it out. Instead of rebooting after flashing the custom recovery and allowing cyanogen to re write it, i simply turned the phone off and booted directly to recovery and sure enough, TWRP. Problem solved. I dont understand why cyanogen would do that to me and not anyone else!

CM didn't just do that to you, it's happened to every single person who's tried to flash TWRP after taking the Lollipop update, that's why the question is included in the FAQ thread.

Moto G Bricked?

Hi.
A friend gave me his Moto G1 2013 to install Linage OS but I'm really having troubles with it, first of all it doesn't allow me to install TWRP, when I type fastboot flash recovery recovery.img it says that it installs but it doesn't, when I try to boot on it it just doesn't boot, the way I had access to TWRP was typing fastboot boot recovery.img...
When I got in I did the first step when you install a new Custom ROM that is wipe system, cache and dalvik cache, then I tried to install the ROM zip file but it gave me "error 7" I looked for solutions and I found one that is modifying updater-script file, I did it but it gave me another error about mount system, I looked for solutions too and I found one that is modifying file system format to anotherone and then bringing it back to the original format but still having the same error.
After that I decided to go back to stock ROM, I have flashed many times the stock ROM with fastboot commands but it just doesn't boot into the OS, when I try to boot the phone it boots into bootloader again... Any solution to this? Is it a hardware problem? Please help me I'm so embarrased with my friend.
Same thing happened to me!

Hi! I tried something similar with a similar result. I first unlocked my Moto G's bootloader. Then installed TWRP using fastboot. After that I tried flashing Resurrection Remix rom which failed. I've been stuck in a kind of bootloop since then. My handset powers up, finds something wrong, tries to go into recovery, fails and does this over and over again.
Since I am able to boot into bootloader mode, I tried to flash the stock rom by following instructions from this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47820707#post47820707
I have tried different variations from many different forums (fora?) all with the same result. Still stuck in the bootloop-thingie.
Btw, I also tried the unbricking guide from this thread
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/help/how-to-unbrick-moto-g-falcon-t3394788 without any success. My phone shows up as a Motorola ADB device and also as XT1033 in Device Manager when its plugged in.
Anyone know anything to help me out?

Hi, I found the solution time ago, sorry for answering to late, hope I can still be helpful.
Well, what I did is, I booted into TWRP, then I did a total format to the storage, after that I did something kind of crazy, I switched my storage format to anotherone and then I turned it back to how it was before (example: I was on fat32, I switched to exFAT and then I switched again to fat32) after doing that I tried to flash LinageOS and it allowed me, it booted and now my friend has Android Oreo on his Moto G1
Hope it works for you mate, those situations are very frustrating, good luck

Stuck in Recovery - tried a lot!

Hello,
I have a problem with my OPO7Pro (GM1913) - Bootloader unlocked.
I hope I can find some help here.
I was on 9.5.5 and updated to 9.5.7. Before rebooting, I chose the function in Magisk to patch the Boot image on the inactive slot.
After the reboot, I was stuck on Bootloader.
No I really tried a lot, but couldn get my phone to boot up correctly again.
The only thing that works is booting into TWRP recovery after using
Code:
fastboot flash boot twrp.img
What I have tried:
Used the package from https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-7-pro/how-to/rom-stock-fastboot-roms-oneplus-7-pro-t3931424 (9.5.7-GM21BA-OnePlus7ProOxygen_21.E.11_OTA_011_all_1906040003_25c96-FASTBOOT.zip) --> There it stuck somewhere saying the image is too large?
Used the flashable zip from https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-7-pro/how-to/oneplus-7-pro-global-repo-oxygen-os-t3930585 (9.5.7: OnePlus7ProOxygen_21.E.11_OTA_011_all_1906040003) --> It flashed, but it still did a bootloop
Flashed the patched/stock boot image from the Magisk-Thread --> Only bootloop
I really don't know, what I could try. I have a backup of my data, so this is no problem. I just want my phone to boot again.
What is the correct way?
Can someone please help me?
Thanks a lot!
Try this unbrick
Hi, thanks for the hint! This worked flawlessly! Phone is booting up again. I'm now trying to update and get root again.
Edit:
Fully working again, with root and newest update.
Thanks a lot again.

Fastboot Bootloop

I got my OnePlus 7 Pro today and tried to install Magisk by patching the boot.img. After trying to flash the patched image, I now have an issue where rebooting the devices leads me straight back to the bootloader. Trying to enter recovery also leads me straight back to the bootloader. I tried flashing the original boot.img I extracted from the OTA update file provided by OnePlus, but it still isn't working. I do not have TWRP or any custom recovery installed. Any help would be much appreciated. I noticed similar threads, however they all installed twrp, though I haven't yet as trying to run "fastboot boot twrp.img" always resulted in it booting to a screen saying "fastboot mode" which wasn't terribly helpful.
Edit: Its not the tmobile/5g/carrier version. I purchased it through OnePlus' website though I forget the exact model number.
Well, "fastboot boot twrp.img" does not work on all devices, sometimes you have to use: fastboot flash boot insert_twrp_img_name_here.imgLearned that the hard way, also use the unofficial twrp from mauronofrio.
Had the same problem as you have, and fixed it with that unofficial twrp.

Did you need to completely revert to stock after the issue, or did flashing twrp fix the fastboot loop?
Edit: Trying to flash the stock fastboot rom currently as flashing twrp did nothing probably because me trying to fix it broke everything. Hopefully the stock rom will get everything back to a working state where I can try again, just this time flashing twrp.
Also using windows this time instead of linux....

Ok, so, trying to restore stock seems to have failed miserably.... any advice is most welcomed qq
OK.... so trying to unbrick the device using the msm stuff, I couldn't even make it to the downloader screen. After holding volume +/- and powering off, my screen is now black HOWEVER the phone gets detected by windows when I plug & unplug it. I have no idea what to do anymore. Someone please help
Figured I'd give the solution here in case someone else is in the same exact problem as me:
Follow the instructions over at https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-7-pro/how-to/op7pro-collection-unbrick-tools-t3956595
I tried to de-brick it using the fastboot roms and all that, no dice. The only thing that seems to have worked was following the above and using the msm tool. Everything wiped, but hey, at least the phone is bootable again and now I have a way to fix it should this happen again. Yay for happy endings.
Edit: Also, following Faith1105's advice, flashing twrp to boot instead of trying to just boot it first worked successfully and from there I was able to install magisk.
Edit 2: Now wifi isn't working.... why life, why...
Edit 3: OK: EVERYTHING IS GOOD NOW. Twrp ran into a boot loop issue, used twrp to flash the most recent android 10 zip, rebooted and was greeted by stock recovery, then used that to wipe absolutely everything and reboot. After skipping through initial setup and making use wifi was working I rebooted again and this time tried booting twrp the way the usual instructions say to, this time it worked for whatever reason so once that started I used twrp to flash twrp's installer and magisk. It looks like everything is working correctly now. If you have the same issue maybe this stuff will work for you or maybe not: I don't know, and honestly I'm now brain dead lol.
