I got my phone yesterday and I set up the fingerprint sensor. I read in the reviews that it is extremely accurate and good, however I don't find this to be the case. After I unlock my phone it will take at least 2-3 tries before I manage to unlock it. Do you think I should try for a new phone, or it isn't something abnormal?
I have noticed that if I press the power button, and then put my finger on the sensor I don't always get a match. When I wake with the home button and leave my finger there I get it right 99% of the time. Trying to understand if or why my positioning would change/affect the sensor.
No problems here try re-register your fingers make sure it's oil free, wash hands and dry clean then register...
I'm having the same experience as the OP. Very inaccurate for me
Very accurate for me. I registered my thumb presses sideways cause that's the angle my thumb actually hits the button.
Yeah I registered sideways. Even registered a couple of different times but still same issue

While taking notes in my calc class this morning, my screen suddenly started zooming in and out very rapidly for a second or two. Afterwards, my screen failed to recognize any touches besides the S-Pen. I noticed that one of the corners (Above the left speaker when held in landscape mode, I believe) of the tablet were fairly warm, which I'm assuming is the battery. Because of this, I wasn't able to zoom out while using S-Note (Although, at one point, I could zoom by sliding only one finger. I'm assuming the touch screen was recognizing the heat of the battery as one point, and my finger as another. This only worked once, and it was only for a second or two).
*I was taking notes for approximately 90 minutes, with "Power Saving" mode on and screen brightness set between 15% and 20%.
*S-Note's finger edit rejection setting was on, and I was recording audio while handwriting my notes.
*I tried using finger taps and slides outside of S-Note, and they weren't recognized. S-Pen worked just fine.
*After shutting off the tablet for 30 min, finger interaction was recognized again.
*The tablet was resting upon a protective sleeve when the event took place.
Has anyone else had similar issues? Should I look into an exchange/repair?
Thanks in advance for any responses.
I haven't had this issue. And some days i can take a few hours worth of notes during business meetings.
I never use the power saving mode- i have heard others have diff issues with it in power saving- not sure if this is what caused it. Additionally i have not had my battery feel hot even after a few hours of note taking.
Is this the first time you were taking notes this long? curious if you had the heat issue before...
good luck.

This was not the first time I had taken notes for that amount of time, but was the first time I'd encountered the issue. I don't recall the battery getting that hot before, either. I'll turn off power saving mode and see ifnit happens again (though it won't be 'til next Fri that that I'll be repeating the same conditions. I'll post an update then).
Thanks for the reply.
I've done both but didn't have either issue. I've used it well over 2 hours taking notes in both power saving and regular mode, at over 60% battery. Do you have any mods or any changes in your kernel by any chance? Rooted? Also, this is the 8013, correct?
This inadvertent "zooming" is typically caused by your palm hitting the lower right hand quadrant of the tablet prior to placing your pen tip. This is a bug resulting from the normal zoom feature and has nothing to do with a hot battery.
Although not completely fixed in the leaked JB beta, it is much better. What they really need is a zoom bar as opposed to pinch zooming in the S-Note app. I agree it can be quite annoying.
The current solution is if this happens, pinch the screen back to 100% then place your pen tip down on the screen prior to resting your palm. Another option would be to rest only your pinky finger on the screen while writing as opposed to your entire palm if in the bottom half of the page.
@sledgie:
My note is completely stock. Yes, it is the 8013 model. I forgot to mention that the tablet was resting on top of a protective sleeve. Could this have possibly enhanced the heating of the battery via insulation?
@Mitchellvii
Thanks for the tip. However, I am already aware of palm rejection and it's inconsistencies (I'm happy hear it's been improved in the leaked update). The event of the rapid zooming (in and out) took place when my hand was away from the screen. Also, the lack of responsiveness from any further finger interaction (Pinching, tapping, and sliding) leads me to believe there was some sort of physical interaction taking place between the screen's sensor (excluding the wacom sensor) and hardware, especially due to the issue's application throughout the Android OS outside of S-Note. Also, the single finger zoom event suggests that there was another touch point being triggered. I could only surmise it to be the heated battery, and the cooling of the battery remedying the issue lends itself to my theory.
Thank you both for the replies.
First time poster, though been a regular lurker.
It seems I have a slightly dodgy proximity sensor. Have checked with one of the proximity sensor apps and while the sensor detects if I have my hand over it, it is very unreliable when I take my hand off. It can take from anywhere from 1 to 30 seconds or sometimes never.
While ive been through other threads where people have a completely failed sensor, does anyone have this intermittent problem. Also is this a hardware or software issue.
Im currently htc-dev unlocked running Pacman v15.0.
Out there is a tool for recalibrating the sensor, but you would need to be S-OFF I think and it's done with a service tool (a special PG88DIAG.nbh)
Let me know if you are willing to try it, but it is VERY dangerous if you do the wrong things.
I had the exact problem from the very beginning. Got a phone and the very next day had a screen protector applied. For a few days proximity sensor created problems. The screen would go black when the call started, but until the call did not end, there was no way to bring the screen back. So, I used an app just like yourself to check and saw the same thing happening. Ultimately read extensively and realised it was due to screen protector. Took a scissor and cut off the protector above the sensor. A few months later when I had a new protector (of a different company) applied the same problem reappeared, so I had to cut it off from the top. Except that this time around I was sort of expecting it. I hope this help! :fingers-crossed:
I had the same problem and it continued no matter whether i remove the protector or cut the portion....im unable to most awesome ROM's.......only n sense 4.0 im able to re turn on the screen using power button.if there a way to completely disable this turn off during calls irrespective of the ROM its highly appreciated......
Looking forward for the solution

An update to my situation.. I ordered a new proximity sensor on e-bay and have replaced the same on my phone now. While I was at it, I cleaned up the window as it was pretty grimy and could have been the source of trouble. Also cleaned up the contacts with Isopropyl alcohol. End result.. Im still having the same problem!!
Im pretty sure now that its not a hardware problem and has to do with the calibration. What I have noticed that the sensor works fine in bright sunlight but not when there is less light around. Also am not using a screen guard!
Would it be possible to guide me to the right tools to recalibrate please?
Sorry, I haven't done this myself, but I'll search a bit how it's done by HTC.
They are using a special holding station where the devices are calibrated.
I am wondering if anybody else has been annoyed by this:
On Samsung Galaxy S7 edge one had to first press a HW btton (home or power) and only then able to unlock using the fingerprint scanner.
On the S8 this is not so. Touching even for a moment the fingerprint scanner instantly unlocks the device!
I noticed that when the phone is in my pocket I would touch the fingerprint scanner inadvertently causing the phone to unlock.
If we look at the iris scanner:
One has to first press a HW button and then utilize this unlock option. But for fingerprint unlock, no...
I think this fingerprint scanner unlock procedure is solved immaturely by Samsung and would like to see if more agree.
Or am i missing an option somewhere? Comments/advises are welcome.
I prefer it that way, although I find it's in such a bad location that it isn't useable.
Hell no, the entire point is that it unlocks instantly. people dont want to be pressing other buttons first, taking extra time and effort dozens of times a day to unlock it. i cant see many people unlocking the thing by mistake by having their hand in their pocket!! It's hard enough to hit the sensor properly even when TRYING to! The fact it unlocks instantly is fantastic, i was impressed by how fast it is (when I manage to hit the scanner properly).

That's the thing. It's fast, really instant.. That's why a momentous touch in the pocket is quite possible to unlock the phone.
I understand why you like it. And agree is useful.
And may be if there was an option to choose instant unlock OR unlock following a screen on first (by a HW button) would have been nice.
Yeah they could add an option for that but i doubt enough people would want it for them to do it
I prefer it like this and the placement isn't bad at all either.

I was only able to unlock with fingerprint about 50% of the time.
I found out that after using a double tap gesture in Nova launcher to lock the screen, it required my pin to unlock. I disabled that gesture and now the fingerprint unlock works almost as well as it did on my Nexus 6P.
Craziest thing I have heard

All phones with fingerprint sensors on the back will instantly unlock when you put your finger on the sensor. That is the whole point, to quickly and securely be able to log into your phone. For example the Nexus 5x/6p and Pixel phones all work this way. The Galaxy S6/S7 2-step method of pressing the home button and then waiting for the fingerprint to read was a somewhat wonky way of doing things that Samsung is moving on from.
I'm not sure what you mean by "I noticed that when the phone is in my pocket I would touch the fingerprint scanner inadvertently causing the phone to unlock." The phone will not unlock in your pocket with just any incidental touch on the fingerprint sensor. It has to be a registered fingerprint and your finger has to be placed squarely on the sensor. So unless every time you reach down into your pocket you are pressing your finger perfectly centered on the sensor, I find it hard to believe your phone is unlocking due to the fingerprint reader. There is an option called "Keep screen turned off" in Display settings. With this setting enabled, if the phone's proximity sensor recognizes it's in a bag or pocket, the screen will turn itself off after 5 seconds if the power or home button is accidentally pressed, so perhaps you should enable that.

I love this "feature" but yes you're right, it happened to me gazillion time to accidentally unlock the phone in my pocket. My "fix" to this issue is to have the back of the phone facing against my hand - problem solved, I can't touch the sensor that way.
Enjoy your new phone!
The fingerprint scanner works the way it's supposed to. Go buy another phone that has a real scanner & correctly placed (Like the nexus 6p) and test that, then come back.
OP is used to the crap samsung has pulled for many years, front bottom ugly enormous button acting as a scanner. Just look what they've done with the S8/+, Without the button, it's insanely beautiful. I've only owned a samsung within my work, i'd personally NEVER buy one. But the S8+ changed my mind. The position of the scanner isnt even a big problem. Although i'd like to see it in the middle like the 6p and all other correctly placed scanners. But i've got no problems reaching it.
I find the sensor on the S8+ to work very well. I had given up using the one on my Note7, since it failed to identify my fingerprint half the time. But on the S8+ it's much more accurate. And I like that it turns on and unlocks the phone with just a touch (like the Nexus 6P I had before).
I'm even getting used to the placement. Particularly with a case on the phone, the cutout of which helps identify the location by feel, it doesn't seem like a problem anymore.
Works great for me.
Phone is lock in pocket. Pull it out and put finger on sensor and it unlock to home screen..
Works as it should.
Iris scanner works like this if you pick the phone up from wireless charging.
It's really starting to grow on me, especially when Samsung Pay. I don't know how many times I pressed too hard on the Home /fingerprint sensor and ended up closing SP and starting over.

I had a S7 Edge Duos for a day and tried Nova for a short time. I set the double tap gesture and Nova told me about a workaround.
If I wanted it to unlock right away it would ask for a PIN everytime but if I let Nova set a black screen for 5 seconds and then lock itself it would unlock with the finger scanner.
Ontopic:
I totally love that the phone is unlocking this way now. I freaking hated that I had to press a button before the fingertip scanner would unlock the phone and it only lasted 24 hours with me.
Exactly the way I like it. Got used to it on my LG V20.

I hate it too!
I just bought a S9+ and I really hate this feature. I am CONSTANTLY accidentally unlocking my phone. The fingerprint scanner is fantastic in that I barely touch it and it unlocks. Perhaps I just need to delete all of my fingerprints except a pinkie or something weird, so maybe try that. At this point, I just had to turn off my fingerprints together because it was getting sooooo annoying, but I'll probably do the pinkie thing eventually because I loathe having to do a PIN.

I got massive fingers and constantly encounter this issue. Not everyone has fingers the size of rice puffs that accidental unlocks aren't an issue.
My view 10 took quite a tumble today and now the finger print sensor and screen rotation don't work. I tried to add a fingerprint to see if it works, and it recognizes i touch the sensor the first time but thats it, every time i try to add a finger print i get one attempt but never another, and it never works period to unlock my screen or unlock apps like lastpass. Opened it back up after replacing the screen (I know, I'm really hard on phones) and looked everything over really well, no defects noted. The rest of the daughter board works and I reseated the finger print sensor and daughter board connections, as well as the main board connections, and checked all the pressure pins and grounds but still no luck. And I've done a factory reset to verify its not something funky going on. However the sensor itself and the cable and connections are all flawless. Any suggestions on what I should check/replace?
I'd really appreciate any ideas!
A bit of a strange issue. The fingerprint sensor has been working 100% without issue since getting the phone.
I let the kids use my phone for an hour to watch cartoons. After that it started not recognising my finger. I cleaned the glass, removed the case, re created the fingerprint profiles. I made a mistake and tried an OTA update, which then had to fully reset the phone, but that's another issue.
I am using a tempered glass protector. I took it off for 1 day to see if that made a difference and not really. Even being extremely careful after 1 day there were tiny scratches on the screen.
Wondering if anyone else has had an issue like this. I did reload it with the latest Miui 12 stable, but made no difference. Not sure if the kids were pressing it constantly, but no signs of damage.
It will vibrate and attempt to recognise my finger, but just fails. Then the next time it may work, but intermittent and really annoying.
I have found that it seems to work better when out of a case for some reason. Maybe the sides of the case resting on the glass.
Overall I think this is a great phone. Shame about no development happening. As I use it debloated with MicroG it means I can't do ota updates.
I'm considering getting a Galaxy, Oneplus or Pixel phone. Until the possibility of more development happens if ever
We've had ours for about 3-4 days now and I have found the FPS to be crap out-of-the-box. Exactly the same issues as you, and with just the default screen protector on it. Sometimes it works fine at first attempt, at other times I have no choice but to enter the PIN to unlock.
I made the mistake of letting my kids use the phone again a few days ago. After that the fingerprint sensor would sometimes not be detected. The phone randomly won't switch on and have to hold down power for about a minute then it turns on. Very annoying, but doesn't happen all the time. Did it almost all weekend, then today it's working almost fine.
Did test in TWRP and didn't have the same issue. So making me think it's either software or fingerprint sensor related, causing the issue.
Still think the phone is great and there's not really another phone on the market I'd prefer at the moment, just need some custom rom support. A work friend has a Note 8 and his will be 50% battery while this is still about 85% or so

I have the same issue since I got the phone, the fingerprint sensor is ****, I opted to unlock it via bluetooth by recognizing my smartwatch.
Hydrate or moisturize your fingers/thumbs
Much faster accuracy unlock speed
Try to Change the Glass Protector
Your using alcohol based hand sanitizer, these remove moisture from the hands making them dry. Just put some lotion you'll have much better response.
What game were your children playing on phone?
Have you looked at their fingers?
I don't like on screen fingerprint sensors. Maybe too much pressure leads to an issue.

Peel off the screen protector, it is bull***t.
Also, I remember to have activated the "show touches" option on developer settings. It was almost unable to recognise fingerprint. Deactivated again.
Hardware fingerprint sensor is always better. :crying:
