[Q] Help! LG-D800 Top of Screen Unresponsive! - AT&T LG G2

Hi, new to XDA but I have been having a problem with my unlocked & rooted LG G2 D800 running official 4.4.2 recently. About 2 weeks now.
The top of the touchscreen is unresponsive. Did nothing that I know of to cause any damage to the screen. It started with just a small portion where the notification bar is located. Couldn't drag the notification bar down was pretty much the only problem. Then the area began to get larger. But then it would get smaller. It stretches from one end of the screen to the other short ways. At one point there was a small line that would register touch in between two unresponsive areas. At another point the screen started working fine for 3 days then began to act up again. Now the screen registers touches that aren't happening. Turned on a setting in Developer settings that allows me to see small dots where the screen is touched and sometimes it will register 5, 6, even 7 touches at once all in the unresponsive section of the screen. Sometimes one or two or three. They happen in both short clicks and long presses. Sometimes one point will register and stay in the same spot for a while, happens in random different spots in the unresponsive zone. It is a real hassle at this point because when it starts happening it clicks anything in it's path, pulls down the notification bar, zooms, posts, opens apps, etc.
Tried doing a factory data reset, didn't help in the slightest.
Tried updating touch firmware in the hidden menu, again nothing.
Looked it up and it seems to be a semi common problem with the G2. A lot of people are crying software issue. So what my question(s) would be are, does anyone on xda have the same problem? Has anyone found a solution? Even more specific has anyone found that flashing a different ROM works/fixes the issue? Like CM11 say because it's in a stable build? Maybe it could be a hardware issue, loose connection, something else but it's frustrating as hell and it would be nice to find out it's something easily fixable before I start ordering parts. Thank you! -Damon

I doubt that it is a software issue. The G2 is a pretty tough phone but sometimes the digitizer gets a bit off if too much pressure is applied like when you sit and the phone is in your back pocket. Can you have it checked? You can download screen test apps from play store to run simple pixel based tests to see if its ok or there is a hardware issue.

Press the phone firmly with your fingers or palms. It helped my with my lg g2

LCD Screen Defect or Software/Driver Problem?

Hey guys,
I am going crazy here, searching forums did not help me at all.
The lower section of the screen keeps flicking, and not always, what do i mean by flicking, its like the screen at the lower section keeps doing like a strange low refresh rate, and has an old imprint of some old menus. Happens especially when there is the color of gray.
Made a screenshot of the phone, no problems, there, so its not a software rendering problem, might be a drivers problem though, or a defec tin the screen itself.
Frequency is high but not always, and am unable to determine when does that happen exactly. going crazy here, is this a defect? or all touch pro's have this?
Exact explanation summary:
1CM from the bottom of the LCD sometimes flickers as if that 1CM is having an extremely low refresh rate. Mostly happens when there is light gray, but not necessarily, and a soft reset for the phone does not remove it. It happens on random!
Hey,
Yeah it happens to me too! You don't need to do a soft reset, it actually fades away if you watch it closely! I don't know what it is either, and yes it is random as you have stated! I initially thought it was an application I installed as it only started happening after that, so I did a full hard reset and its still happening! Not sure what or how, but hoping next firmware version stops it!
Cheers,
mpls-te
As it happens, that's exactly why I've logged on here today! Any ideas whta the cause might be?
OK, good to see that others have this, so am not alone here, experts here, any ideas? other touch pro users, can you please leave your statements?
I hope its a driver issue.
But from what i noticed, its like, the screen is OFF, as in blank and no back light, but somehow, the application working on the screen before you turned off the device is somehow printing something on the LCD, something that we don't see, and when we actually start the phone and its back light, that OFF LINE imprint pops on screen. Something like that.
Its completely illogical, but dunno, can't find any sense here and am going crazy
Same thing happened to me and a few others as well.
See my thread here.
What rom is everyone using?
I've noticed a similar issue with mine, except rather than something software it seems like it's the backlight for the bottom 1cm of the screen flickering slightly. I don't see any weird pixels or inappropriate screen information, just a dimming/high speed flickering of the backlight in that same regionas yours. It comes and goes. Sometimes weeks without it, then maybe 3 times in a day for a minute or two at a time. Everything else works fine and whatever screen I go to displays fine.
I'm assuming it's a hardware problem with the LED(s) that light up the bottom portion of the screen, and I'm going to use it as an excuse to get a warranty replacement somewhere near the end of the warranty when the phone's getting a little old and worn.

Lool, evil, lets just hope that this problem DOES occur when you go to their shop for your replacement
Good idea though, might do the same thing except that i have to travel abroad to where i got the phone from to actually get the warranty working. Don't forget to re-enable stock SPL and stock ROM
It happens frequently enough I'll be able to get it on video just in case they need proof, but typically they just exchange by mail.
I just posted in another thread about this issue. I have run into the same thing a few times. The bottom portion of the screen flickers, and when i do things that have a dark gray or black screen I can see a ghost image of the left and right soft keys from my TFL3D home screen. It seems to be most noticeable when the screen brightness is set to max. To get it to go away I usually do a few soft resets, and then, if needed, i will turn off the phone and take the battery out for a while. I have never tried waiting it out to see if it will just go away on its own.

I see that everyone posting in this thread, that has their signature filled in, is using the Energy ROM. I find that very interesting.
i am having the same problems, sometimes touchflo3d will flicker at the bottom, near the edges. I also get text that can be read through other screens. Like on pocketshield i can see the left and right softkey words still at the bottom. its so odd !
P.S im on energyrom
I'm on NATF v2.2, not an energy rom. But then again, mine looks more like a hardware issue, as I've never seen any ghost images of text or softkeys, just flickering.
can somebody post screens?
maybe the same problem here...
hardreset, other roms > problem still there:-(
Same problem here and I am using stock rom!
here are 3 screens of my xda diamond pro, using latest official o2 rom and newest romeOS eng
hope you can see this prob?! same like yours?

Well, i doubt EnergyROM has anything to do with that problem, since my Stock ROMz had same problem, never got fixed with any updates HTC used to release. MAYBE some Cooked ROMs out there have this solved, if any, please let us know And my problem is nothing close to screenshots above :S

Dude, those photos are awful, after seeing them am happy with my phone flickering, its nothing close to this.
You see, in your photos, all three of em, you some kind of shadow effect, where text of a button for example has that same text beneath it 3x6mm, that is not my case at all.
My case is as follows, IF i am on the home screen for example all looks ok, except that the bottom 1CM of the screen is flickering. If i go to another window, either a total black one or any other screen, i would still see a ghost of the old home screen, for example, and only at the bottom 1CM.
Will post photos once i get my cam back. Cheers
similar issue
my issue is kinda similar, instead of getting the bottom 1cm or so discoloration or stuck pixels, I get streaks of red or blue on my screen. I have had this happen on each version of NATF I have tried, but don't remember it happening on the stock version (which I am tempted to try again to see if that's the issue).
Could this be a driver issue?
mind is even worse than all you guys, the touch screnn dose not response, and i have the energy rom on it, before it goes wrong. it just suddenly dose not response, than i send it to HTC, they ask for 425.00 for fix.... I will just send this to Asia and get some one to fix it.
But I hope before i send it out, some one can help me here.... anyway can fix it easy!!!!

[Q] Possible hardware problem of the back button?

I just wanted to share this, since I was able to replicate this issue with three different phones, also asking if other people are having the same issue.
I am using my Samsung Nexus S for three days.
I noticed that the back button (the first capacitive button on the bottom left) appears to have an hardware problem.
Basically normally it works fine, I mean when I'm not using the phone for some hours.
Then if I start to use the phone, after a moderate use (example installing applications from the market, browsing etc) the button gets less and less sensitive.
After some minutes it gets really annoying.
To make it work it is necessary to use a really stronger pressure with the finger, and it is not even always working!
I am planning to return my device, but today talking with some people/colleagues I discovered that two of them have exactly the same problem.
I'm suspecting there is a batch of Nexus S phones with this glitch, I am curious to know how many people have the same problem.
Note:
At first I thought it was a general issue of the capacitive buttons. But I can't replicate the same problem with the other three buttons, they work very smoothly just lighltly skimming the finger over them, even after long usage.
Anyone with the same problem? What is your experience with this button after some usage?
Cheers
I want to say that I noticed something similar the other day, but it was short-lived, and I'm not 100% sure. It wasn't long enough or bad enough to make me think the phone is defective, but I'm a bit used to funky capacitive button responses from my N1 days.
I can't reproduce the issue right now, though. How much usage are you talking about needing to duplicate?
Does your phone get hot, or feel hotter than normal when this happens?
I'd see if there's some particular pattern or software that seems to trigger it if you're interested in trouble-shooting.
The problem goes away when I don't touch the phone for a while (it seems that 1 hour is enough to reset the problem).
It seems "recharging".
Then with normal usage, nothing in particular, just even browsing in the settings/maps/market/browser etc., in few minutes the problem appears. The button definitely loses his "power".
It's very annoying, and my friends confirmed the same behavior.
EDIT:
Forgot to sat that the phone is not getting hotter, everything else is really normal.
Cheers
Mine definitely can be used for much more than a few minutes without the problem you're describing appearing.
I'd take it back. Factory reset the phone to protect your private data before taking it back. After the factory reset, you might want to test the behavior again, if it went away, the phone's not defective, you just had some software glitch.
Reminder, factory reset erases everything on the phone, so if you do it as troubleshooting step, be prepared to have to set the phone up from scratch again...I'm sure you knew this, but just covering my butt in case you didn't. It's a good trouble shooting step no matter what if you don't mind the hassle of re-setting things up.
I have a similar experience with the back button. Not sure what to think yet.

I had a similar problem when I had the Vibrant. Just exchanged it and luckily I got a better one without any problems. I did find out though if you are using the screen protector that came with the phone, it can cause this type of problem.
No problem, I will try everything tomorrow. This is not my primary phone (still loving my rooted Nexus One with CyanogenMod 6.1.1 ;-) I can't renounce to the colored trackball for the different notifications), but just a "dev" phone for testing purposes.

Anyway, today I factory-reset my telephone and the problem of the back button is still there. I am returning the device.
Back button non responsive
Hi,
I just got my new nexus S (about an hour ago) that I was really excited about and am faced with a problem with the back button too.
Its got factory settings, so it cannot be a downloaded software issue. Also, I have not yet charged the battery at all, its still running on the same battery power that it shipped with.
The other buttons at the bottom of the phone (home, menu and search) all respond fine, its only the back button that does not seem to work. After going through this thread, I tried long-pressing the button, hard-pressing it, pressing just above it, below it, etc. It just wont respond. I had removed the screen protector it shipped with, so that cannot be the issue either.
If this is a known hardware problem (i.e. others have faced it too), irrespective of whether it is acknowledged by Samsung / Google, I'll return the handset. I do not want to spend a fortune and be landed with a handset that does not work - forget working as desired, but it does not seem to be working as designed !
Thanks & Regards,
Rohan
Yep. Definitely a problem here with the back button. There's also two other threads here about it.
I'm having similar problems. I have to touch the button just right for it to work properly

I was experiencing the same thing with my Nexus S, wasn't sure if it was the case I was using! Took of case and still had problem. I eventually returned mine cause it seemed like it was getting worse! I have a new one worth no problems, definitely a hardware problem! Return it!

those buttons work over the heat of your finger. thats why after use it doesnt get as responsive. its because the screen is also heated and the heat of the screen is effecting the buttons. thats why you need harder pressure for the phone to understand this is your finger.
same issue was with Nexus 1. less responsive buttons. thats why there is a bigger gap between the buttons and the screen for galaxy S phones. i dont know why they did such a thing again with the nexus S. its like samsung didnt learn from anything from HTCs mistake.
They work with capacitance, not heat. Hence it being called a capacitive screen with capacitive buttons.
I think this is true ...
I have an HTC Desire with AMOLED screen.
When I play a finger intensive game, like "SkyForce Reloaded", after some times, the touch is not registered.
Then I must stop for a while, or change finger
Try that, you will know what I meant.
But, I don't have issue with the back button on HTC Desire because it is a hardware button. I am just trying to explain about loosing touch registration because finger interaction on (s)amoled screen.
PS: SkyForce Reloaded is an old school shot'em up game where you control a little space ship with your finger, shooting enemies.

The Desire's digitizer is the same Clearpad 2000 which is used in the Nexus One (and quite a few others), the problem there is that it's pants.

lol, isnt called like that because it registers the heat from your fingers. thats why if you try to use a pen, it wont register . and thus. the screen is NOT resistive type "where it will recognize anything since its being pushed by force ? "

from your link
"A capacitive touchscreen panel is one which consists of an insulator such as glass, coated with a transparent conductor such as indium tin oxide (ITO).[7][8] As the human body is also a conductor, touching the surface of the screen results in a distortion of the screen's electrostatic field, measurable as a change in capacitance. Different technologies may be used to determine the location of the touch. The location is then sent to the controller for processing.

[Q] Major problems with Sensation screen

Having problems with the touch screen on my sensation and this has now happened on my secound phone! both phones were ok out of box but after a few days first noticed problems from lockscreen as phone would not always unlock when draging app icon into circle then slowly geting worse until would take several swips on screen to even unlock! then started noticing similar problems in norm opperation? sometimes works ok but some times freezes up have tried factory reset and no differance. very strange having this problem on two phones?
Does the touch screen stop working completely?
Mine did that on Monday, had to get a replacement.
it seams to stutter once awake works slightly better? but still not responsive
I've noticed that the proximity sensor and gyroscope are being used aggressively to filter accidental screen presses.
For example, if I place my sensation flat on a table, the lock screen is very hard to unlock. If i place my other hand near the proximity sensor at the same time (or tilt the phone towards me) it unlocks easily. Until I identified this functionality I was beginning to think my right index finger was unsuitable for touch screens (since when placed on a table I tend to use my right hand, but otherwise use my left to unlock).
Hopefully this will be tweaked with future updates.

Many thanks I hope itd that simple?
I am having the exact same problem, for example on the lock screen I would swipe up but the ring will move slightly, and one icon I.e the camera icon will move towards the ring, another grip which is buggin me is that it will miss screen taps, I.e when texting or clicking an icon one tap will go unnoticed by the device resulting in either a missed letter, or the app not opening. This also goes for the 4 command buttons at the bottom, it happens on these too. I also get the occasional lock up.
Factory reset did not work

As I stated before, I experience this problem but it only occurs when the phone is laid flat and my hands are well away from the proximity sensor at the top left of the screen. I can say that the part you are describing with the lock screen is 100% the same problem I come across in certain situations.
Please test to see if the problem is still present when the phone is tilted in your hand and, if you are laying the phone flat when you experience the problem, try putting your other hand near the proximity sensor when you try to unlock.
If this happens as I describe then it is most likely a software bug which only affects users who have particular phone use habits.
Saying that, as you are having quite severe symptoms, during general use, it may be that you have a faulty proximity sensor in your phone - leading to missed screen taps when the phone thinks you are not touching the phone.
Well I laid the phone flat and unlocked it no less than 20 times, each worked flawlessly no problems at all..... Seems to have me baffled
Yes I've been having the same problem. First noticed it when trying to unlock it (phone was lying down), couldn't get the circle to move. Have had one complete touch-freeze. No input possible, however volume and power button worked. Took the battery out, restarted, and it worked fine.
I notice that input can be difficult sometimes, hit and miss or just have to push harder. Strange. Seems like a software issue to me.
edit: just had the same issue - circle wouldn't move. After picking the phone up I was able to unlock it, however still not as easy as it should be, a bit jerky.
Both my evo and my g2 had a grounding issue, for example if I had the phone laying down on the couch or bed, the screen would not respond to touch but if touch the phone with a finger and try to unlock it with my other hand it would work normally. So it seems to be a common problem with some HTC devices

The wildfire (my friend's got one) has this problem too. You have to keep touching the metallic housing for it to detect any taps.
You are correct, aim1126. I never considered grounding to be the cause but after re-testing it clearly is.
I guess it is a side effect of having a conductive unibody. So basically there will be no software fix, we just have to keep constant contact between our hands and the unibody. I wonder whether a rubber bumper would actually make this problem worse?
Edit:
Actually, the screen seems to adapt to not being grounded properly after a couple of presses. It works fine for me by the third time I touch the screen - weird. Well at least it is only a minor annoyance!

My wife uses a G2 and I wouldnt call it a grounding "issue" honestly seems like more of a feature to make sure you ment to engage the screen.. Its kinda cool IMO
As far as the screen being laggy this sucks since I wanted to upgrade from my Vibrant to the Sensation.. I also am not sure its a software issue you guys are having.. I am running Sense 3.0 with gingerbread on the G2 and it is very smooth.. The option to silence a call or tirning on speaker phone by turning the phone over is neeto torpedo..
I'm having the same issue, from lock screen I drag the circle up and it just stutters. After a few tries it usually works, once unlocked the touch screen appears to work fine. I'd expect the issue would continue after unlock if it was a hardware issue.

That's very bad. Flaky lock screen is not good, and the example of not being able to scroll through apps without it running one is a killer. There are many times when scrolling through a list of selectable items is necessary.
Are you going to exchange the phone?

Touch screen going crazy

The random bottom part of the phones touch screen starts to be randomly pressed,
It’s like the phone has a mind of its own, sometime is a few phantom presses and others it’s a full battle to keep the phone from random opening apps and calling people till I hit the lock button or pull the battery.
I have seen a few post about the phone over heating causing this, at 1st it seemed to be my issue, but now the phone does this while feeling relatively cool and right after removing the battery for a bit.
after some time the issue almost stops, this time i have a bit of a dead zone near the bottom right.
can this be calibrated or do i need to replace the part?

Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Free mobile app
Hello, you solved the problem of their touch screen? My work normal, but suddenly begins to do the same as yours.
Newbie Searching for help!
I literally just joined, and this is my first time doing something like this. So, I don't know how to request help for specific issues concerning my LG Zone 3. Can you give me some direction? I chose you because you are a senior member and i have similar complications with my keyboard.
Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon.

[Q] Screen Issue? (XT926)

I received my XT926 as a refurb and I have been experiencing a strange screen issue.
I will often have my phone on a dock, charging and sometimes I will notice the screen is black like it's off, but the touchscreen is responsive. Hitting the power button does nothing but it makes the sound as if I had locked the phone. Hitting the power button a second time will turn the screen on like normal operation.
Very rarely I have noticed the screen will turn off while I'm actually using the phone and it's a weird effect. The easiest way to describe it is that it looks like entire lines disappearing randomly over a period of 1-2 seconds, going from all visible, then to all black, kind of like slatted blinds being closed, but at random. After this, it displays the same symptoms as if I had found the screen off while in a dock/charging.
Now, I don't want to say it's related, but I first started experiencing this on the Stock KitKat update from Verizon. I am currently using Cyanogenmod 12 nightlies and I am experiencing the same issue. It seems to be happening with greater frequency.
I have also experienced the blue screen effect when certain animations/elements/apps are up on my screen, but I think they are unrelated.
Also, there is a faint discoloration bar about 2/5ths of an inch thick uniformly vertically from top to bottom of my phone on the righthand side (just under where the notification bar would be if turned horizontal).
I've tried to find more information about this but my search results have been relatively lackluster (90% of the results are trying to sell me the phone or specification pages)
So I'm breaking down and turning to here. Does anyone know what's going on here? My current theory is that my screen is going bad. I have no intention of replacing the screen on this phone (would rather just buy a new one), so any suggestions that don't involve physical hardware repairs would be appreciated.
I thought i was the only one experiencing it.
The screen turning off with a weird effect happens rarely but yeah it happens. And the blue screen effect, i noticed it only happens when im on the youtube app when the video stops working because of my connectivity issues.
Im not rooted nor is my bootloader unlocked. On the latest system version. Sounds like a software problem but hey im no expert.

i also have this with my referb i made moto give me my money back and they let me keep the phone for me it was very rare but my new phone also had a really bad screen all yellowish and bad white balance in low light if you are unhappy with it call them and say you are unhappy with the replacement here is the white glove number 800-653-7185 they are more understanding and nice but you may lose you ability to unlock your bootloader on the new phone if it comes with the latest software just a warning
I have that screen off with lines slowly disappearing thing, too And, yeah, it's also a refurbished one, bought from one of the sellers on aliexpress... I thought Lollipop was the culprit or something like that. Oh, well... It rarely happens. And luckily I only have that, not the second issue you mentioned
I am having this exact same issue. The weird lines-to-black screen thing, and the flickering blue screen when watching video. Are you saying the solution is to call Motorola and ask for a new phone?
The blue flickering can be prevented by going into Developer Options and checking "Disable HW Overlays".
The discolored stripe on the screen sounds like burn-in; these AMOLED screens are much more susceptible to burn-in than the LCD screens used in older phones. Whomever owned the phone before it was returned to Motorola probably had something running on their screen continuously with a bright-colored bar at the top, likely in a car or desk dock. The screen is very easy to replace yourself with an eBay part, if you're inclined; it involves 2 screws and 2 connectors.
I've seen the lines-to-black thing exactly twice since I got this phone refurb two months ago. Sorry, I don't know what causes it or how to avoid it, but the workaround is quick and simple enough that I'm not worried about it, yet.
