[Q] App killed when swiped from Recents - General Questions and Answers

I have a bit of problem here android experts. I'm using WhatsApp and recently I started noticing that I only receive the messages when I open the app. If the app is running in background (i.e., not removed from recents screen) then i keep getting the notifications. Once i clear the app from recents screen, then i don't get the notifications unless and until I open the app or go to Settings > Accounts and Sync and manually Sync WhatsApp. I have tried everything from re-installing WhatsApp and clearing the cache and data and also no task killer applications is stopping WhatsApp from running in the background. And even though I don't receive the messages, the WhatsApp service keeps running in the background. I tried sending a message from my friends phone and didn't receive the message but when i checked under Settings > Apps > Running, it showed WhatsApp is running One process and One service. I hard resetted my phone also but nothing happens. Please give me some solution to this problem. The notifications arrive on all other apps except for WhatsApp.
I have checked previous threads on XDA and none seem to solve my problem so I'm posting a new thread

Umm I guess ut was a fault with the device, possibly it was a defective piece. I have given it to the service center as for now. Still the details are :-
Model : Lenovo A606
Rooted : Yes
Rom :- Lenovo A606_S036_150227_ROW
Android Version : Kitkat 4.4.2
Platform : Mediatek MT6582
What does 'Make' mean I am confused in some Android Terms

[GUIDE] Using Apps Ops (or Privacy Guard) 4 blocking wakelocks & saving battery

Before I begin note for:
Everyone:
I am making this thread as much as noob friendly. So if anyone doesn't understand any term or anything please let me know through posting here or PM me.
Moderators:
This is my first guide. I tried to follow all the rules if my thread is breaking any rules please let me know so I can make appropriate changes.
If the thread is in wrong section please move it.
This guide is only for:
- Android 4.3 and above which has app ops (privacy guard)
App Ops (or privacy guard) can be used for:
- denying specific permission to a certain app
-checking which apps are kepping your phone awake and which apps are the one using resources like location, personal stuff, etc ( only if your app ops or privacy guard has " advance" option. watch video to know what it is.)
- preventing app from causing wakelock
-overall it can be sort of used like wakelock blocker, battery saver app ( because of its feature to block wakelock) and noob friendly way of determining apps that causes wakelocks.

(Best viewed on laptops, computer or mobile devices with bigger screen)
I was a little late (actually lot late) to use app ops
It was recently that I started using app ops (now mostly know as privacy guard)
Not only can it be used for privacy purposes but it can also be used as battery saving app or wakelock blocker.
Different Roms have a little different app ops( privacy guard) some provides user advance options some don’t. Some even has little extra option and sort of interactive mode like xprivacy. (like temasek’s ROM which I use)
I am made this video with temasek’s ROM which is my favorite ROM.

Will be soon just waiting for one or two days. I have asked for some screenshots on various threads of different ROMs. So that it will make a better presentation and comparison of different options in different ROMs. If i don't get enough screenshots in two days then i will myself download and flash some ROMs.

I faced same problem once. Don't remember now when and why as ut was long time back. I think it might have something to do with your ROM. If you are using xposed framework try using "app ops" module. I will try to recreate this error when i flash different ROM (Which is at least once a week) if i am able to replicate this error i will let you know why and what caused it.
I flashed one ROM over another after wiping just cache, dalvik and system which lead to same error message except it was when i tried to access "developer option"
So did you change your ROM recently without full wipe or procedure as mentioned in your ROM's thread?

If you are using xposed. Try "app ops" module . uf there is app ops hidden on your device it will unhide it. But from some stock ROMs it has been completely removed. And in some custom ROMs developers might have limited its use(functionality).
Try asking in the thread of ROM that you are currently on. You will known for sure from there where the app ops is on your ROM.

you can give this app a try.
found one article here some text from that is below:
Users of Galaxy S4 Google Play edition handsets have started receiving Android 4.2.2 over-the-air update notifications just a day after the same update was rolled out to Play editions of LG G Pad 8.3 and HTC One.
Android 4.4.2 not only brings in new features and bug fixes, but also removes App Ops from the OS which Google claims was mistakenly tagged along with the Android 4.3 update. The Apps Ops allowed users to control how much access can third party apps have on their personal data.
the app for which i have given you the link installs some customized version of app ops. not sure whether it will work on your phone or not.
Can someone confirm for me what some of the permissions are actually for?
Wi-Fi change
Data change
Bluetooth change
Also, if I allow an app 'Wake up', but not 'Keep awake' - could the app keep waking the phone in an attempt to gain the wakelock which it is being denied?
'Keep awake' only applies if the screen is off, correct?
If I deny 'Keep awake' then an app won't close down while I'm using it, but it could be put into hibernation (don't know the correct term) by Android while it's in the middle of a background task? Like a radio app could just close, or a browser which is downloading something could just terminate the download before it's completed?

wake up means : if device is in standby mode then that app can wake up your phone from sleep. like Facebook app when you recieve some notification it wakes up your phone to show notification.
keep awake means: while your phone is in use. if you are using some app and it is performing some operation and your phone screen times out and display switched off. after a while your phone will go in deep sleep. this permission will prevent it from going in deep sleep mode and keep phone awake. for example if you are downloading something via some download manager. and you have denied that download manager "keep awake" permission. so after you screen times out and there is no other app or process that is keeping your phone awake. this download manager will not be able to keep your phone awake. so download will stop .
so you need to use these permissions carefully. make sure you don't deny some app permission which is essential for its normal function.
you can deny Facebook both these wakelocks if you don't care about getting facebook notification all the time
Wifi Change and Data change is normally shown in apps that uses data. and also have options like sync or download only on wifi or only on mobile data. it is essential for that app to determine the change. so that it can act according to its settings.
For Bluetooth change you need to tell me for which app you are talking about? maybe some automatic profiles app like llama, tasker, etc they need this permission as there are profiles or conditions like switch on Bluetooth when in this area or if connected to this Bluetooth device do this
few people denied "settings" wake up and keep awake permission and they screwed up their phone. they had to reflash the entire ROM . they reported no touch, device not waking up from deep sleep. etc.
so just be extra careful when you are experimenting with system apps.

Weired Shortcut unremovable

Going nuts here. Did a factory reset a couple of times but no luck.
There's a short cut called "Web Games" that keeps showing up on my Home Screen. I cannot trace where it came from. The short cut opens a Website called "h5playlist.com" which is a simple HTML 5 based Game Website with a few random games. The Whois of the Website traces to a Chinese Domain Name Provider, ename.com, and the games are provided by a German HTML 5 Game company, softgames.de.
I have e-mailed both ename, and softgames but I'm not sure if they'll help. I have also tried to clean the phone with security software but nothing has helped so far.
Anyway, please suggest something, as this is bugging me out like crazy!
I tried every single antivirus but no one discovered it !

hi,exactly d same issue is happening to me.it started 2 days ago..i did exacrpy d same steps that you did but nothing solved it.the web games icon appera everytime i go online so it eventually creats multiple icons in my homescreen. there is also a urlresolver app on my app settings which i keep on uninstalling but it keeps on coming back automatically.i dont know if if has something to do qitj the web games icon issue..i have an O+ fabgo android phone
same problem for me with my Phicomm 660 unrooted mobile running Kitkat 4.4.4.Can somebody help to solve this issue?
I installed nova launcher over the default android launcher and it prevents me from seeing the autocreation of the Irritative shortcut on my screen.I think this is the temporary solution as of now.
There must be some adware that has been installed with either a downloaded app or preinstalled app. Removing the contaminated app could solve the problem. If you cannot find the the app that is doing this for example with malware scanners, the way to get rid of this adware is to restore factory settings.
If the problem is still present after restoring factory settings, the current ROM that is installed in the device must be infected. The solution to this would be to flash the device with a new clean ROM.
Solution:
If you are facing with web games short cut, here is answer for you.
Android:
Go to Settings > Application Manager > Click on running process 'All' > Force Stop & Disable "com.androidhelper.sdk".

Huawei Notification Bug

Hello, I am interested in getting a Honor 8 but as a user of a Honor 6 I need to know if they fixed the bug who most annoyed me, the notifications coming up only for the stock app and the ones on the battery managment white list (Facebook, Whatsapp, gReader), I tried every possible way to activate notification for normal apps and games and always failed, I could receive them only with the app always open in the background.
Can someone confirm if games like Fate Grand Order, Granblue Phantasy or app like Amazon, Line, APKpure notify as normal on Honor 8? Without using notifications apps or keeping the app on in the BG.
Thanks to whoever helps, this is a big factor for me in the decision to buy this device.
Go to setting-->apps-->advanced-->igonre battery optimizations

I tried them all, it doesn't work, I just want to know if people are getting notifications on Honor 8 because the 6 is done.
My friend receives notification all the time on his honor 8, also I will reach members and ask them
Honor 8 Notifications & Pop-Ups
Hello, we appreciate your concern about the notification settings on your Honor 8 device. Please note: some setting notifications in Phone Manager is not supported for some apps. To set notifications for such an app, touch Settings > Apps, touch the app, and the touch Notifications. If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out to our knowledgeable Honor Customer Service Team at +1-844-524-6667 and they can assist you further. (NS)
Of course I already tried that.
For being clear, I tried everything, different party launchers, notification apps activating every setting and disabling battery optimazion, etc.
I only haven't tried to install a app as system app because it requires root and I'm not doing that or closing the huawei battery mangment app because it woul create other problems.
I just want to know if Honor 8 had the bug fixed and normal apps give notifications, like games or similar unknown/low rated apps.

What app is not getting notified?
Did you do any official update? If so, did you backup (Huawei backup), factory reset and restore?

Every app not one installed on the device from Huawei from before I got it or not a message related one.
I had problems with whatsapp notifications, after a reset is the only app I got to work fine.
Facebook, Twitter and a few other apps about messaging and high rated in the play store like gReader or Avast always worked.
I recently discovered, when searching for a solution, that Huawei created a whitelist for apps in the their battery management program and every app not listed in it could not work, I tried every possible way to get notifications and not a single one worked.
That confused me, I can't find any explanation to this

So, you got to phone management, battery, protected apps, and selected the ones you wanted to avoid stopping when screen is off.
Also in phone manager, notification centre, you select all options (could leave banners off) for the apps you wanted.
And in phone manager, app auto-launch, you turn on the option for those apps.
I know doze in MM ROMs is tricky but still it works fine. I also noticed when restoring apps from a backup sometimes notifications for those apps don't work well.
I'll repeat it again.
I've.Tried.Everything.
I have this damn thing from 2 years.
I just only want to know if apps notifications work like they should on Honor 8 and most recent Huawei device, is the only thing stopping me from getting one, if the answer is no just tell me, I will go for another brand like Sony, Vernee or Samsung, maybe even Elephone, at least stock android doesn't have this bugs.
Every app will respond differently, but to adjust notifications on your phone, follow these instructions:
To set notifications for such an app, touch Settings > Apps, touch the app, and the touch Notifications.
Note: Setting notifications in Phone Manager is not supported for some apps. You can also adjust individual apps settings by going to the specific apps settings. (NS)

Notifications work fine in H7 and H8.
I'll stop repeating how I already set every setting on and it doesn't work because it seems like is useless and everyone is repeating their advices.
Could someone with H8 list some apps with working notifications? I could try to install them on mine and verify if they are on the white list or the new devices actually work as they should and every app notify.

Dear VooXoo, I think everyone got a bit confused since you posted this on the Honor 8 page. As everyone else mentioned, the notifications are NOT A PROBLEM on Honor 8. Yes they were a problem on your device : the Honor 6 and even Honor 7, but they are not anymore.
I would like some proof, because some people say isn't a problem even on older devices.

Task Manager Apps with Nougat 7.0 and 7.1

Since updating from 6.0.1 to 7.0 on my Nexus 6P I have realized that the task manager I used no longer works. I tried many other popular and non popular task manager apps on Nougat and none of them work. They all display something like "no running apps to display."
So obviously it seems in 7.0 Google updated whatever command is needed for an app to pull the running apps from the system, and no one has updated their task manager app to work with 7.0. I was pretty shocked that in the forums no topic with "task manager" was created with in the past 6 months to talk about this.
So are others people experiencing this with task managers on Nougat? If so, have you found any task manager app that works with Nougat?
Edit: sorry if this the wrong forum to post this, but I figured it applied here since it seem to be related to new API causing these types of apps to not work. Feel free to move it if this topic fits better somewhere else. Thanks!
Why would you use third party task mangers when you already have one built in Android?

Simple! Because ever since Android 5.0 the task manager only shows the average RAM usage. It does not currently show what's running in real time. Only shows the past 3 hour, 6 hour, 12 hour, or 1 day average. It shows apps that are not even running at that very second. That information can be helpful some but not for everything.
In Android 4.4 and earlier it used to show real time what apps were running. Just like on Windows computers task manager shows real time what's running. If an app starts running, it appears on the list. if an app stops running, it disappears from the list. This is helpful for finding a rogue app on your battery, or a rogue app slowing down your phone using a Ton of RAM. It is not as easy identifying a rogue app with averages. Especially if it's an app that's not running all the time in the back ground.

It won't kill apps automatically you can use Greenify for that or you can do it manually every time after you open the app again.
There are two ways
1. Go to app info and force stop it. (recommended)
2. Go to running services and stop it from there.
Once you open the app again all service will be restarted. The first option is easy and straight forward

I know man i was just trying to make a point about still needing task killers, look what permissions greenify needs to do that now: usage access, draw over apps, accessibility permission... Horrific permisions... Android even asked for my fingerprint when giving it accessibility permission and said it needs it cause of encryption...
If that was native in Android (no background running option per app) that would be great.
Might even partially fix poor ram managment in Android...

Grr and how to view what's consuming cpu? Show cpu usage doesn't work properly on nougat s7 for example. And the included ram manager is poor and it slowly refreshing

For ram usage use running services in developer options.
I totally agree with you, moving on to a newer system broke a lot of apps...

Hi, updating here to -1. Agree with posters above, built in is a pita to use.
My old task killer was click app, click kill, job done :good:
Also really useful to quickly see what was running right now and those naughty apps that restarted themselves
Someone must have a decent easy task killer for rooted Nougat
Updating again: Advanced Task Manager free is working just not the pro version I paid for. Looks like they care more about the ads than their paying users. Ok for me anyway. Rooted phones don't have ads
In Android 7.0 Google once again has made undocumented changes and has significantly restricted access to the proc file system. This means that since this new API level it is not possible anymore to retrieve processes info. Task Managers running on devices with Android 7.0 will only show total CPU usage, their own CPU usage and memory usage, but not CPU usage for other processes. Running the app on a rooted device does not make difference. More info on File system changes in Android Nougat - Stack Overflow. Star this Android issue to push Google to implement an alternative API.

Maybe a CPU/RAM monitor that should work in Nougat
I was looking for a CPU monitor before upgrading a TV-Box to Nougat and I found his thread in meantime it seem (I have not tested it) that "System Panel 2" should work with rooted device even with Nougat: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sp

Alternative SMS apps stop working, only native SMS app stay alive, why?

Hello,
I don't have any problems to receive SMS with the native application.
With other apps (QKSMS, Chomp, etc), it works for a moment, but after the night for example the SMS do not arrive anymore.
If I launch the app, it works for a few hours, but the previously sent SMS are definitely lost.
It's like if the system kills the SMS service as long as it's not the native one. But I thought this was Android to manage SMS reception, not the apps... I find nothing on the Web. Do you have any idea of a solution?
(I don't think it's specific but this happens on my tablet Lenovo Tab4 with Android 7.1 rooted.)
Try removing the SMS app you are using from battery optimization. Settings -> battery -> 3-dot menu (I think that's the location on 7).
Thanks, but already tried. I guess these apps are not designed to stay in memory, just receveid a notification from the system.
I don't understand why it seems that I'm the only one with this problem!
Open the problem app, then go home. Open the recents menu, does the app have a padlock icon? If so, lock it. That should prevent the OS from killing the app.
It seems to work. But I still may can close the app by inadvertence, this is not a real solution. Why am I the only one who must do this? :'(
Thanks for your time, I think it's that or using the default app, no other choice.

It's all about battery life. The aggressive methods of killing apps varies from manufacturer and device. Huawei, Samsung, OnePlus and Xiaomi are extremely aggressive at killing off apps. Android 9/10 is more aggressive than 7.
OK, it may be Lenovo the guilty.
I write too fast. It does not work also by locking the app in the recents menu.
So I'm forced to use native application.
Thanks again
PS: I will try by putting a widget of QKSMS, it seems to help...
