Edit: SOLVED
Problem: Water or some liquid mixture with water and other conductive chemicals can leak through the outer edges of the glass screen, causing electrical shorts on any of the navigation buttons. Thus avoid applying direct pressure with damp cloth along the perimeter of the screen.
Solution: Place the phone in a ventilated area as long as needed. In a severe case, this could take a very long time (a blow drier may expedite the process), so you may want to seek instructions on how to dismantle some of the phone components to allow drying, or disable the search key temporarily, or send the phone in for repair(last resort).
---------------Original Post-----------------------
As I type, my Samsung Captivate appears to be possessed with an obsession with clicking the search button all by itself, at random times. I've searched around the forums and have yet to find a solution that works for me.
I'm running Cognition 2.4
The phone is about 1 week old, with the problem starting at about 5 days.
I replaced the phone initially because it would shut down randomly. Now this one seems to have yet another malfunction
EDIT: Also note that the problem began shortly after cleaning my screen with a slight amount of monitor cleaning fluid and microfiber cloth. Whether this is coincedental or not, I don't know.
Does anyone know what might be causing this, or know how I would go about disabling the search button altogether?
i had the same problem, its kinda just went away for me haha
Hmm, I also hope it goes away as mysteriously has it appeared if a solution is not found.
I'm trying to make changes to "system/usr/keylayout/melfas-touchkey.kl" with "droid explorer", but every time I change the file, delete it, or replace it, the file always seems to revert back. Once I figure out how to do this, the problem should be temporarily fixed.
EDIT: My current theory for what causes this is that it occurs due to an electrical short after the screen has been exposed to liquid of some kind. If you look closely, there are thin cracks around the glass of the screen. Whether these cracks are water-permeable or not, I don't know. But due to the nature of this problem coming about randomly, and disappearing randomly for various owners, it would explain the effect of drying. I read someone say that he had this problem on two different phones, so maybe he cleaned both of them in such a way that affected the navigation buttons?
If anyone else can contribute to this theory, please do!
EDIT 2: The frequency of search button activation has increased significantly since the first symptoms appeared. I highly doubt this is software related. There is a apparently an issue with the circuit for that specific button. Considering that my cleaning of the screen was the only possible event that could have impacted the circuit, I am now leaning towards that prospect. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to completely dismantle the Captivate and let it dry.
EDIT 3: I'll focus a fan on the phone over night, then focus a blow dryer on it in the morning.
Had the same problem, it was like that since the first day I got it 07/18. It got worse for a period and now it mysteriously doesn't seem to have the problem anymore. No clue what it is from.

you might also try putting it in a ziplock bag with rice in it. (the rice will absorb the water)
Has the proposed solution worked for anyone?
Hi,
I am wondering if the proposed solution worked for anyone? What do you exactly do? Leave the phone in the sun for it to dry out. With combination of blow dryer?
With the battery out? I've had this phone since August and I initally thought it was a software issue. After couple of hard resets, roots and upgrade to 2.2 the problem still persists.
Any suggestions? Should I try all combinations? Rice Ziplock bag?
Just as a note. Used to have a lot of random search loads. Along with the moisture thing...a lot of us right handers contact the corner and it does need a direct tap of button to trigger as touch screen. If you notice the settings button never randomly pop up. Additionally, from wrar and use the plastic can gain some flexibility. Must my two cents to help avoid letting ATT screw up their phone.

I've had that issue in the past, on stock Eclair, and it was an easy fix for me. All I did was flash a custom ROM. I can't say that I tried it on stock 2.2, but an Odin didn't help, so I went custom and it disappeared.
WOW! Thought i was alone.. I also have the phantom button activation problem... but it's not the search button, it's the home button and back button. I know for a fact my phone has not been exposed to moisture. I noticed it after i flashed an OC'd kernel. I tried every OC/UV setting in the voltage control APP thinking it had something to do with the increased MHZ, but the problem didn't go away. I have since flashed a variety of custom roms and regular non OC'd kernels, but the problem still is present. I saw someone post a little while back about the same issue and that they sent their phone in and at&t replaced something having to do with "LIB." The submitter didn't have any idea whether the "LIB" was related to software of hardware. I'm considering sending my phone in, but i hate the idea of being without my phone for 2-3 weeks. If anyone stumbles upon a fix, please do share.

Try a gingerbread rom.I've had the same problem, back and home key.No matter which froyo rom I run,it would act up randomly at times.I dont spend enough time on eclair to be sure that it does it,but I've been running GR-9 for two days, has not happened once.Coincidence?Maybe....Now running GR-11 for the second day,so far so good.

I agree with the op that the cause is water/moisture in the phone. I have had it on all android versions I have used. And the fact that that it comes and goes is strong evidence in my opinion

It might be moisture in some cases, but....
Post getting old, but new to me! My random search problem is definitely not moisture related(unless high humidity outside is considered a problem for a cappy). My phone stays dry, I even clean it with a lint-less cloth, so water isn't the issue(its in a otterbox). I read some post on other sites that show the only fix is either allowing samsung to work on it, or get a refurb from att. I think this problem is also related to all those wrong contact sent messages to, which has happened to me several times with some embarresing happenings . I updated to gb 2.3.5 and problem still exist, plus I use handcent for messaging, and I havn't sent a mis-message yet.
There's another thread on this (search 'crazy back button' and my tests on many roms indicates that it has to with the blk app that mods the buttons. Many roms come packed with versions of it.
No longer sent from my BlackBerry.
Add me to the list with this problem. At first I thought it was an old screen protector. I changed that out last light but I cleaned the screen first by spraying it with LCD cleaner I guess I'll have to wait for it to dry a bit more. I've also been playing with recent Glitch kernels with BLN issues so I can't figure it out!
Well I got the BLN issues sorted. Still can't figure out the search button. There's got to be some way to disable it completely
I get this problem at random times when using Google Maps / Navigate, while the phone is in the car dock. At random times, the search will just pop up. No idea why
While using the phone in the rain one day, the touchscreen pretty much became inoperable once there were multiple droplets on the screen. Luckily I did not have any seepage under the glass, though.
I also concur with meadhros- I've found that when gripping the phone in my right hand, the edge of the pad of my palm at the base of my thumb sometimes sets off the search, since it wraps around the edge of the glass slightly.
Hey guys.. So I've had my inspire for about 2 or 3 months now, and this thing is driving me apeshhh. Here is why...
For a few weeks now, the phone would randomly restart in the middle of doing something, always random. Sometimes while writing a msg in the stock facebook app. Sometimes when browsing market, sometimes when browsing using the web browser. Today I wanted to download Astro to see if the music I put on the phone went to external or internal SD. As soon as the download finished, the phone restarted. After it booted back up I looked through apps, and it never installed. I went back to market and searched it, pulled it up, and it shows installing.... let it sit for 5 minutes... nothing. Restarted, same thing. Pulled the battery... same thing... I can't cancel it, or try again. It will now no longer install anything else.
I figured maybe it needs to download something that it just doesn't have the network speed to use, and trying turning on wifi. IT WONT EVEN TURN ON. Under the settings menu to turn it on, it says error. When i tap on it, the error msg just goes off then comes back right away.
Anybody else experience this? I really wish SOMEBODY would come out with a decent f**king phone on the AT&T network.... I guess I can now add HTC to the list of people that can't build a decent phone. Just below Samsung... (What a POS line of phones they have released).
Anyway, phone is stock, not rooted, nothing turned off, completely stock.
How does the warrenty work now? I bought the phone outright, cash, $500... for this....
Thanks for any help.
Could be your phone mate. I've had this phone maybe about three months and haven't experienced those issues. Just might be a lemon you have. Where did you purchase the phone?

I bought the phone at an authorized AT&T retailer store. The kind you find in common shopping strips.
Try to see if they will give you a replacement

Back up your stuff and factory reset. If that doesn't work then either Root it and try a different ROM or get a replacement phone.
You might want to look at the thread in here about random shutdowns. It looks like the batteries on these phones can be the culprit. My phone randomly shutdown, sometimes restarted. I thought it was a ROM I had loaded at first. The problem got progressively worse no matter what ROM I used. It would do it maybe once a day & then within less than 3 weeks I have to keep it plugged in all the time. It happened when I opened a power-intensive app like navigation or a game. The battery is covered under warranty.
This issue seems to be rather uncommon, but it does exist.
Nothing compared to what Captivate owners went through.
Lemons do happen, but as suggested, I'd try another battery first. If that doesn't solve the problem, there shouldn't be any issue with getting a warranty replacement.
And that warranty replacement will, with near certainty, be a good one. Again, unlike the Captivate.
I've had mine for about 3 months with none of these issues. HTC phones for me have been great. Even their customer service and support if their products. And I have had Samsung, motorolla, and LG none at the same level of build quality. If you continue having problems get in touch with the HTC support they will help if not let u know if you can get a replacement.

I am a former captivate owner. That phone was so bad that it destroyed it's own internal memory. Every app continously force close, every process, upon startup one day. Restored a backup, got nothing, reflashed, got nothing, mounted it and formated it then ran a memory checking utility on my computer with it, and it showed like 46% of the sectors being bad, after then 2nd test somewhere in the high 50s. I promtly punched in the screen and folded the phone in half, and tore it into 2 pieces... So i think that may be why I'm relatively patient with this phone.. (that was also my 3rd captivate replacement). (Debating using a picture of the phone as-is in a DIY to fixing captivates and post it in that forum... get all your frustration out and buy a new phone.. ha ha.)
I will call HTC and see talk to a rep, maybe they know more about the problem and will be able to determine whether the phone or the battery is at fault.
Also, factory reset did not fix the wifi problem. Instead of immediately going back to error under it's status, and spent about 10 seconds trying to connect, then came up with error. This leads me to believe it's hardware related.
I will most likely push for a replacement phone then. I do have a concern with that though... My phone has never gotten wet, and only has a small indication of falling out of my pocket while sitting in a stadium chair (maybe a 12 inch drop onto concrete). Will this void my warrenty? The scar left behind is hardly noticeable, but if they looked for it, it will be seen. Another thing is, when I pull my battery cover off, there are 2 screws along the side, one is covered by a sticker that reads VOID, black sticker with white text. Is that some kind of indicator of water damage? I'm more familiar with white stickers turning red or pink from water damage... and as said, this phones never been wet.
Thanks again for the help.
At&t is usually good about replacing defective phones and will be faster than dealing with htc. You obviously have experience with at&t warranty having owned a captivate.

Those stickers are intact right? As long as their intact and not "punched in," which would indicate a screwdriver has penetrated in order to get the phone open, you should be good, as far as that's concerned.
Uhh well bad luck for you... I dont think this is a common problem...

So, there I was, eating dinner while my phone read me a book.* And suddenly, it stopped. Because my phone crashed. And the amount of a boot cycle it can get through before crashing has been decreasing ever since. A complicating factor: when I still thought it was possibly a software issue, I booted into recovery, and attempted to re-flash the OS (currently it's on 10.2.1). It crashed partway through the process.
On the off chance this was a humidity issue (and not having a lot of time to mess with it) I opened up the phone, removed battery, sim, sd and the small screws in the main body of the phone, and left it in a dry well ventillated place. Now it will get as far as the initial "samsung" splash screen the first time I've reinserted the battery, and won't boot at all beside that. (It's possible that the power button was behaving weirdly, but the phone's behavior was generally so erratic that I can't say that with confidence.) Also, sniffing at the keyboard there is ever so faint a smell of burnt electronics... maybe. Maybe just platicizers. (I've noticed a bit of
This is the same phone that had screen issues (assumed to be related to a small amount of water** though subsequent evidence suggested a loose connector as an alternative hypothesis) around the beginning of February. It's been fine ever since, discounting the occasional weird usb connectivity issues that seem to be common with this phone.
I'm pretty happy to take the phone apart, but other than a general decase everything and look for loose connectors or other obvious trouble, I'm not even sure where to begin. (Also, I have about twelve hours to put in an order if I want Amazon to send by a new phone by tomorrow. Which is kind of silly, but this is swiftly and impressively dead. And otherwise it'd be no phone until Tuesday, which wouldn't kill me, but which would annoy me mightily.)
Any thought regarding common problem areas for this phone? I'm hoping to be able to leave the lab early today, which should give me some hours of working time. Well set up for tools, always happy to have things to take apart.

** Really, not a lot - none of the moisure stickers showed anything, and I don't think it got into the main body of the phone.
The de-casing was fun, and yet there isn't an obviously damaged component. It was pronounced dead at 6:20 yesterday evening.

Get a new battery for it....had this issue before and placing new battery in it fixed my bootlooping and not being able to flash or get past samsung screen...the samsung batteries have an overcharge feature which has been known for causing errors such as this...
Alright so here's the deal. I had an incident with some liquid. The phone worked for months after that. Then weird things began to happen. First the mircophone went out. Then, after I tried to clean the mic, the screen went blank and I couldn't get anything to show up. After doing some looking around, I found out that the daughterboard at the bottom routes the screen and has the mic on it. SO, I replaced the daughterboard. And now I can get the screen to come on, well, sometimes. And the digitizer is just as touch and go. Occasionally it decides to work, and most of the time it doesn't. So I guess what all this comes down to is, does this sound like a screen & digitizer issue, or is the motherboard (and thus the whole phone) shot?
ANY help is GREATLY appreciated!
Your phone is fried
As soon as I hear phone problem and water in the same post, my advice is usually the same. Move on. ?
Unfortunately with water, it can get time consuming and costly.... You fix one thing, only to find something else doesn't work.... And so on and so on. Water is evil, and in most cases, lethal.
You've seen replacing one part has only partly helped. To me, if a phone gets wet and serious issues follow. Save your time and money for a replacement.
Sorry for the bleak outlook... But fixing water damage is a rough process usually.
Good luck in whatever direction you go! ?
Thanks for the input. I've unfortunately already purchased a G2 to replace it. I've tried, but it's not worth the time and money. Loved my Nexus 5 and I'm sad to see it go.

Hey Guys so i have searched high and low for a solution and still can't figure out a fix. i've read on sony forums that other people experienced the same issue but can't find a fix. I got the phone second hand (risky i know but i took a gamble) and it already have android pie. At first it was working great and i was quite happy with the phone but as i started using it every now and then it would reset itself at random, even in my pocket, then it started freezing when i unlocked it and eventually reset and work again for a bit. from the start the volume up button was not working but i can deal with that. on other threads i have read that some people are having the exact same issue. Help is very much appreciated.
So far i've tried turning off fingerprint unlock, uninstalling apps, turning off auto brightness, turning off the code unlock, factory reset, flashing to android oreo, and running in safe mode and so far none of that has fixed the issue. (although it helped temporarily giving me false hope!)
i'm going to try flashing back to nougat as a last resort but am not going to have too much false hope. Thanks for reading and any help in advance!

You pretty much ruled out a software issue by reverting back to Oreo and all that.
Volume rocker isn't something that just fails on these phones, so that's suspicious to me.
In most cases freezing/rebooting is caused by a faulty current supply (battery) and distribution (conectors, cables, capacitors...), if the software issue is ruled out. Faulty screen, screen connector and cable can cause freezes, the phone itself doesn't freeze up, but the image on the screen does, so it looks like the entire phone freezed, but it didn't, just the screen. Again, this as well can be caused by bad power delivery to the screen.
I would take it apart, take a closer look at the board, connectors, possible corrosion and dirt on capacitors, and replace the battery since it probably hasn't been replaced ever, and it's now a fairly old phone, and second hand, god knows how was it charged and treated in general.
If you never opened a phone before, I wouldn't suggest you start with this one, it's not really "novice friendly". Take it to someone who does board level repairs.
My best bet would be the phone was opened and some service has been done on it, but not properly+bad battery/battery connection.
Volume rocker is very easy to mess up, if you don't reseat it well it can fail to register pushing the button.
There really isn't a simple straightforward answer to you issue, if the software is 100% ruled out, the board and battery needs to be checked out, specially if the phone was opened before.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply, so would system ui not responding also be due to the hardware? I just thought it was strange that some other people had posted pretty much the exact same issues.. Ofcoruse, mostly power delivery. If for example the cpu or the screen isn't getting correct voltage and power, it can missbehave or freeze up as a failsafe to prevent damage.
As I said, I would take a look at the board, and change the battery with a known good one, since I have spares lying arround, to eliminate that variable as well as software.
I presume you're not rooted and you're troubleshooting using oem firmwares. If not, all bets are off.
A faulty battery can be a culprit of many issues that look like software/ui issues, but they're not.
Make a full software repair with latest official version, if it fixes nothing, it's a hardware issue.

I presume you're not rooted and you're troubleshooting using oem firmwares. If not, all bets are off.
A faulty battery can be a culprit of many issues that look like software/ui issues, but they're not.
Make a full software repair with latest official version, if it fixes nothing, it's a hardware issue.

Thanks very much, I'll give that a go first!
If it fails where and you are close to me (Melbourne Aus) how would you like a project?
I share with you my personal experience.
The phone is amazing, is very fast, efficient, amazing sound, amazing screen.
I have the same problem with the volume up bottom but in my case it was caused for a fall incident, I took it apart and I discovered there is one flex connector that goes from the mother board and is shared with the volume bottoms, the power- fingerprint sensor, the camera bottom, the lower speaker and the lower microphone.
In fact due to that fall I am having problems with the volume up bottom as I wrote, the lower microphone, the lower speaker and sometimes the fingerprint function does not work.
I think is still worth having the cel phone, I`ll search for the flex to fix it up
I think most of the description Zagreb does of your case can be adjusted to the reality of what is happening, I think is necessary a technical checking of the hardware.
I'M sorry, of course I meant buttons and not bottoms!
Freezing, unresponsive ui and volume buttons not working properly.
I've had this same issue for a few weeks tried hard resets safe mode, etc, nothing helped. So after much frustration searching forums to no avail I set to and tried a deeper investigation into my own device, I accessed the dev options and looked at power hungry services. The most hungry was Xperia home so I stopped it and low and behold my phone hasn't locked up since, still volume buttons are mostly not working but I'm not locked out any more.
Same here,
First randomly reboot, after factory reset randomly system UI failed constantly , very annoying.
Indeed button up volume is not working (properly).
Someone found solution for this? I already purchased a new battery.
@Chernob0g : how you disabled/stopped Xperia Home so I in meantime can use my phone.
Replaced battery, looks better now.
Volume up still not working, but freezing looks solved.
