[Q] searching does not work

I have just done a search for "XFJP7" and a list came up with no reffrence to XFJP7.
The first result was: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=817703
I did a search in that thread for "XFJP7" and nothing was found.
If this site wants users to search the threads for answers then you need to fix your searching.....
You also need to make it easer to find threads users posted in......
search
hi,
Well me search bought this up :http://www.google.com/cse?q=XFJP7&s...ub-2900107662879704:fs7umqefhnf&ie=ISO-8859-1 with quite a few results.
Not being sarcastic here, but did you ever think to broaden your search field a little to get more results. for example roms, slowdowns, fixs etc?
THe information is out there, you just need to have a little patience and know how to search!
Cheers.

[Q] CM7/AOSP TV Out

I've searched high and low and haven't found this question worded this way. I can't post to the development, so I am asking that someone in here helps me.
If I were to search through the coding and find where the phone directs its display to the screen, then find in the code where gingerbread sends the music to the A/V cable (3.5mm), use the two to write a code to send the display to the same location, and then add a setting to turn it on and off, what would happen?
I need time to go through some tutorials and figure out how exactly to start coding with android. I only have experience in C++, Visual Basic, and HTML. I was just wondering if this was one thing that has been attempted to get TV Out to work. I work around 80 hours a week so it would be very helpful to get input and save me the tutorial time.
ps. First post here ever, and I know I'm not even on a beginner level when it comes to programming android. So only productive responses please.
First post FAIL. There are ROM-specific stickies in the Q&A subforum and this should have gone in the CM7 one. Please do a search before starting a new thread and it is better to post to an existing thread rather than start a new one. Had you searched you would have discovered that TV Out works with Gingerbread.

[Q] Search Issue?

All day today I have had an issue with Searches. I keep getting told it is temp unavailable.
Yet, when I go to Samsung S3 forums and click the links (such as General or Q&A sections they work just fine - my understanding of how forums work is those links are just Pre-set Searches.
I've changed nothing on my PC in weeks, but nobody else seems to be complaining about a problem and I noticed it this morning and it is now 6:30PM.
Is there an issue or is it me in some way?

Your understanding is incorrect. When you click a link, that takes you to a pre-defined place within the forum - as you can see from the forumdisplay.php?f= info.
The search feature goes up and down like a whore's drawers. Not really a problem - you can just use Google to carry out a site specific search if you need something. That's what I do most of the time anyway as I find it to be more accurate (not just for XDA, for for most web forums out there)
I have the same problem on my tapatalk so dont know if it is connected- i keep getting temporary unavailable for sewrch and for my previous oosts where im participating? What is up with that?
Simon i really dont understand ur answer to this question?

The search feature often goes down - that is just life. When it does it affects other features as well, such as the "Participated threads" and "User's posts".
It affects the web-site, TapaTalk and XDA App at the same time and usually comes back up after a day or so - no big deal.
You can use Google if you need to search the XDA forums. Simply put "site:forum.xda-developers.com" before the text you want to search for and it will search XDA only.
Thanks for the explanation Simon. My thinking was that, when you click on (say) S3 Q&A link, the Search had to run to find and sort the threads into presentation order. To be able to take one to that forum without running a Search would seem to me to require every forum to be in its own database - that would seem remarkably inefficient in terms of server use. I just presumed all posts would be in a single DB (or maybe one for each sub-forum choice at top level, and indexed for efficiency.
Maybe I should set up a forum so I can learn how they work...
At any rate, it is working again now...

Different forum software works differently, but most of them keep the forum number in the database in the post's record, so a SELECT on that forum number returns a recordset of all posts in that forum. (The LIMIT clause limits the dataset to the posts you see - the first 10, 26-50, whatever.)
An efficient database can search a recordset of a few million records, with the database equivalent of a Search (a WHERE clause), in a second. The efficiency is determined by the code (which is usually pretty good these days) and the database (and MySQL, the one most commonly used on the web, is pretty efficient).
Search, OTOH, has additional code to "front end" the database with whatever random search criteria you set, so it's actually less efficient.

[Q] Help on searching XDA

People here love to use [Brackets] in their thread titles as described here. That's a great way to identify what the thread is about.
HOWEVER...
I have yet to find a way to search this site and limit my results based on those identifiers. I must be missing something obvious.
In other words, if I want to search a forum for an unroot guide, searching for "unroot guide" will return a gazillion results. I'd rather search for "[Guide] unroot". But the search engine discards the brackets.
Any help?

If you want to search for a particular type of guide for a particular device is what you can do is navigate to that devices section, then go to the devices General section (Where most guides will be posted) or Development section (If the guides are particularly development related guides, I.E compiling a kernel from source, or building a ROM from source for a particular device), and then in the upper right hand corner is a "Search this forum" search box that you can then search for what your looking for. For example building on your example say I wanted to unroot my Nexus 10, I would navigate to the Nexus 10 General section and then using the "Search this forum" search box I would search "[GUIDE] Unroot Nexus 10" or similar search terms and I should be able to more easily find what I'm looking for. For other topics try narrowing your search range by visiting a particular forum section then using the forum specific search box. Another example might be say I wanted to learn more about ROM development I might navigate to the Android Chef Central forum and then using the "Search this forum" search "[GUIDE] Build your own ROM" or similar search time. Overall I would recommend trying to search in a particular forum section to get more accurate search results. Also you can try using Google search for example and including specific keywords like "xda unroot Nexus 10 guide" which would return a guide for unrooting the Nexus 10, while as you mentioned just searching "xda unroot guide" will return many results. Let me know if you still have questions.
Thanks for your reply!

I've tried doing what you've suggested. My problem, however, that the brackets, [], get discarded in the search, such that the results return anything with "guide" (be it a title or message body search). This occurs whether I search from the site or from Google.
I was hoping to limit my searches, for instance, to only threads that specifically have [Guide] in the title, rather that every thread with "guide" in it.

Another suggestion would be click on the search button in the upper right hand corner and then you should be presented with advanced search options. A couple options you could try is the search keywords section selecting the search titles only option, or the search by tag option searching for the guide tag.

It appears "tags" are not the same as the [notations]. In other words, if I go into a particular thread and do an advanced search putting "guide" or "[guide]" in the tags section, I will not get a list of all threads with "[guide]" in the title

Did you try searching the thread title only in advanced search options for the "guide" keyword?

Don't use the XDA search engine. Use El Goog and in the search box put;-
site:forum.xda-developers.com [GUIDE]

as well as the keywords you want.
Not perfect, but more likely to return results for you.

[Completed] [Q] Learning android at a deep level & GPS last fix timer notifier/toast

First, I'm looking for an app that will warn be that the GPS fix in maps is actually from 10mins ago.
Second, Android seems to be a really complex thing.
For example, not many people knew how to trace a wakelock back to the process causing it.
Not many people can tell me how to look at the phone system and show which process is using the GPS and then which app is linked to that process.
So I'm looking for resources. Where can I learn about this stuff as a non-programmer. Many resources seem to be aimed at programmers. I would like to know how to do things as if it's linux, on the command line.
What do I search for to find these threads and resources?
Hi
Thanks for writing to us at XDA Assist. There are several threads/articles on XDA that explain wakelocks and how to track them:
[GUIDE] The Total Newb's Guide to Wakelocks
Wakelocks
[APP][2.1+][12 Jan. - V2.0] BetterBatteryStats
They may take some learning to get your head around, but that's the nature of learning about something new.
Good luck!
Thread closed, thanks.
