Dear all,
I am new on Android, the Nexus 5 is my first android device. I freshly come from a 5 years old iPhone 3G.
2 Weeks ago I unlocked the bootloader of my device and rooted it following the tutorials provided by the XDA community without any problem.
Today, I saw that the OTA to upgrade from the Android version 4.4 to the version 4.4.2 was available directly from the device.
Since I did not want this update to be a problem with my rooted device, I downloaded the following apps: BootUnlocker for Nexus Devices and OTA RootKeeper (I do realize using RootKeeper was stupid since anyway the last update was released on July 25, 3 months before KitKat...). But anyway, this is what I did. I used those apps to Lock my Bootloader and unRoot my phone, thinking that this will reduce the chances of potential conflict with the OTA update.
Afterward, I downloaded and tried to instal the OTA directly from the Nexus 5. It ends up that I got stuck on the recovery menu. It was then impossible to get back on android and I did not know what to do.
This is where I did something totally crazy. Usually I spend time reading tutorials and finding information before doing anything that I do not fully understand. But at this stage I simply thought that the update could not properly instal due to the root. So I went on Advanced Wipe, I ticked all the options (data, system, Cash, Dalvik... all of them), and wiped the device.
As a result, my Nexus 5 has currently a Locked Bootloader and no OS installed. This means that I cannot activate the developer menu (no OS) to tick the option USB debugging. Thus, I cannot unlock my bootloader and in consequence I cannot instal the factory image and get back to stock.
Please, If you can give me some advice, explain me how can I unlock the bootloader in these conditions. Let me know... I really don't know what to do now.
PS: sorry my english is not perfect but I do hope you clearly understand my problem.

You've got it all wrong. You do not need USB debugging to unlock bootloader. to unlock bootloader you must use FASTBOOT commands, which means you MUST be in the bootloader itself. USB debugging ONLY works in android.

Dear RootSU,
So this means that I am not stuck at all and that I am simply limited by my current knowledge about android?
If this is the case, then "alleluia"! I will document myself to be able to fix this thing.

Pretty much
You should be able to unlock the bootloader as you did before.
Boot phone to fastboot mode, download fastboot and adb kit to you computer... it can be found here on forums easy, and in comand line to unlock bootloader you need type "fastboot oem unlock".
More complete guide you can find here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2507905 =)

It's ok now!
As you said, I could unlock the Bootloader the same way I did before. Then I install the factory image 4.4.2, which I rooted directly.
Thanks a lot RootSu, you've shown me my mistakes and put me on the way to fix my problem.
Thanks also for your concern Biggreen. =)
Problem solved!

Dear RootSU,
One more question, could you explain me why I got stuck into the recovery menu when I first tried to update via the OTA? Will I get the same kind of problem when I'll update with the v4.4.3 in the future?
Thanks

I am not sure on the extact reason. OTA itself will not install with a custom recovery. You have to download the OTA and boot to recovery then manually flash.
There is a good "OTA Helpdesk" sticky thread in general you should read as theres lots of advice there
hi there...i've got the same problem... i wiped everythink and now i'm not able to switch on my phone....i just want to get out of this somehow...i'm very much new to this and i just want to get my stock android back that's it...somebody please help....
Do you see the battery icon when you connect the phone to a charger? Does the LED turn red when you connect the phone to a charger? Maybe leave the phone connected for a couple of hours and then try to power on?
Hi guys,
I've just bought a Nexus 5 that got updated first to 4.4.3 and then 4.4.4 pretty much straight away.
But now I'm stuck, doesn't get Lollipop at all. I've tried the Google Services Trick, I've rebooted, I've tried without sim, I've tried another phone carrier (I'm in Australia and looks like my provider is still testing Lollipop and not sure WHEN it will release it at all).
Any other suggestions on what to try to get Lollipop? I'm an IT guy but I've never done the manual install or that kinda of stuff.. I had so far the Galaxy Nexus with 4.4.3.
If I install manually Lollipop and everything goes fine, what happens next? I mean, when a new version comes out, do I have to do it AGAIN manually? Losing all the data and stuff? Or ....?
Please advise
Nexus 5 4.4.4
Baseband version
8974A-2.0.50.1.16
Kernel version
3.4.0-gd59db4e
Build number
KTU84P
If you're 100% stock, download the OTA and manually flash it using the 'adb sideload' command - you won't lose anything
I bought it through ebay, how do I know if it's 100% stock?
More than losing data now (nothing on, it's brand new) what will happen when the next update will come out? I'll have to do it manually every time?
thanks for the help
If you are sstock there's not going to be any issues - and you'll continue to get the updates as they appear.
Look for the big OTA thread here on the forums.
Edit : You ain't going to lose data if you sideload the OTA - it keeps your storage intact. You only lose data when unlocking your bootloader for flashing factory images . Unlocked bootloader is not a requirement for sideloading OTAs
ok, understood. But to do the "sideloading OTA" the only requirments it to be 100% stock?
how do I find out if my phone is 100% stock?

reboot to bootloader ( volume down and power pressed ). On the bottom of the screen it will say if the bootloader is locked or not . If it's locked , there's a very good chance the phone is stock. If it isn't you OTA will fail but it should not affect anything.

Any other advise? I'll look for a guide or something to sideload the OTA and I'll cross my fingers

You will be master till new version released and there will be no problem for you. You will flash image without wipe or copy data to PC and make a full install or unlock bootloader and wait for OTA again. Even it is possible that you will be on some custom rom.
Just stop to be so scared about anything - the world of android is yours.
Regards, Zagor
I'll do it over the weekend, I'll keep you posted.
Thanks guys
hi guys,
thanks to everyone for the help, I've sideload the OTA 5.0, so easy I couldn't believe it. Reboot the phone, command in terminal and that's it!
As soon as the phone started it found immediately the 5.0.1 update on its own, so I didn't have to do it manually.
AWESOME, I love Lollipop already!
you're welcome!
Another happy owner.
Some quick questions:
1) I am reading about various issues with nougat so i am not upgrading. Is there any way to disable update notification?
2) Do i loose warranty if i root? Can i un-root / relock bootloader it with no traces?
3) Is there any Shield Toolkit program to easily root/unroot ?
4) USB OTG is suuported both in MM and Nougat ?
5) Any double tap to wake option?
Thanks in advance.
Hello :
1- IDK but I think it's possible, and I have no problem with the update, tablet is better with nougat.
2- Easy to relock and get the warranty again, but NVIDIA don't care about unlocked devices so you can keep it unlocked without problem.
3- No, you have to use ADB / Fastboot commands
4- Yes
5- No
1) Probably, I know a custom rom can do it...
2) Just restore it to factory with their packages, and relock the bootloader.
3) Use ADB, it is quite simple. If you have any issues, just update the Fastboot driver to the Shield driver, that helped me.
4) IDK...
5) IDK...
I can't find anything definitive about whether it's rootable or not
Same here i tried every root app possible and failed.

simple , go to about phone and try to find build number,
after you find build number tap on it until it says you are in developer mode
after that head on to developer option (it may be inside about phone section or above about phone section) turn on the option which says allow oem unlock. then,
just reboot to recovery mode either by pressing volume up or volume down key with power button.
after you enter recovery connect usb cable and open command prompt in pc and make sure that lg device drivers are installed on your pc also make sure you have adb and fastboot installed.
ok, after all this type command
adb devices
if any thing shows us then you have successfully connected your device.
after it type
adb reboot bootloader
then your mobile should restart and show fastboot mode in screen
type command
fastboot oem unlock
and done your bootloader is unlocked.

I meant TWRP recovery . After you've unlocked the bootloader where did you get a custom recovery to flash for the LG k51. From what I saw on Team Wins website, there isn't one.

I doubt that's going to work, but let me know if it does. Carriers and manufacturers use a variety of sophisticated security schemes like requiring lengthy codes that only they can provide, etc to purposely make it very difficult to unlock bootloaders. Tmobile gave me a K51 for free. They apparently feel the have to pay for it by spying on me. I bought a moto g7 plus unlocked for $117 directly from Moto and put Lineage on it, no gapps Would love to use thie k51 though if anyone figures it out because it's more waterproof and bigger battery.

Whether device's bootloader is unlockable / device's Android is root-able or not you easily can find out by means of ABB:
Code:
adb shell "getprop ro.oem_unlock_supported"
If returned value is 1, then it's supported otherwise it's not.

Absolutely no of the crap above works at all in any capacity especially sprint. Generic postings like hold volume down and power also doesn't work to go into fastboot so if you guys are following the advice of some of these guys don't because you'll drop more money on a new phone then you will unlocking it some variants verizon is one I think you have to call LG I know I spent 6 hrs on the phone with "tech support" aka "jokes with a screen to read from" to FINALLY get into touch with an engineer who told me the only way "NOW" to unlocked the bootloader is in his office which means it has to be depot to be unlocked which as of this moment lg is not doing that WILL change in the future that was 12/03/2020. Even running external adb with kali linux to hack it broke the bootloader and sends you into an infinite reboot loop

This returns no value on a locked bootloader because even with Dev. Opt. Enables its still read only until bootloader is unlocked this is verified on two carriers k51's sprint and att. However it is unlockable we haven't found it and/or LG has not added this service to their site which is where you will get the info needed for the unlocked.
Oh my. You know you need to do all this from a computer, right? Can't do it in an Android terminal because fastboot commands are only valid in a phone's bootloader environment. And if you didnt know that then rooting and all of the dangers that come with it just isnt for you. But yes, it's rootable. So here you go anyway.
Reboot the phone to download mode.
Install LG's K51 usb drivers, and install adb and fastboot, on your computer.
Open a command prompt and type: fastboot oem unlock
If it does anything other than pat you on the back and tell you it's proud of you and how well you follow instructions, then go back and follow the effing instructions.
Otherwise, type: fastboot reboot.
Download magisk manager.
Do the magisk manager.
Use the LG flash tool on your computer to flash what you just did when you did the magisk manager.
And presto, you're rooted. Or I successfully left out enough info and you dont know how to use Google, leaving your device still not rooted. And thank god for that.

Hello I need a hand, I installed the latest OS version for Rog Phone with the tools provided by ASUS Rog phone Since my updates it is installed very well, but I have a Bootloader message each time the phone is started (see photo) I would like to STOP it but I can't! If you have a simple tutorial I would be happy or a helping hand, thank you all
As long as your bootloader is unlocked like the message indicates you'll get that. You can lock it again if it really bothers you or just leave it as is (recommended to leave it alone, especially if your device is not a true Global).
Thank you I know that this is possible to lock the "Lock Bootlocker" there are tutorials but very badly explain, it bothers me if I want to resell it.
Asus are not great on the Update part, because it explains nothing, no simple tutorial, I had only downloaded the software.APK to unlock Bootloader and since the updates are made it always tells me the Bootloader message and I really want to delete it.
Thanks if you have any other info.

Is your device original WW/Global version? If it is/was originally a Tencent/CH version, take careful note of other users here reporting that you can only unlock it once, meaning if you re-lock it, there is no going back if you one day want to unlock it. Quite important.
If you're all good with above and at own risk, the steps are fairly simple:
1) Backup all your stuff
2) Boot the device into bootloader (Volume UP + Power until you're on the bootloader menu)
3) Connect your device to a PC with a data capable USB cable
4) Execute the command >> fastboot oem asus-lock << (requires that you have Fastboot access and drivers installed of course: Link )
5) Reboot the device. Your bootloader should now be locked.
If it bootloops or you get a red "device is corrupted bla bla.." message, do a factory reset from Recovery or RAW flash a rom. Recommend you make sure you're fully on top of recovering this device from bootloop/soft brick before attempting this, just in case.
If your only concern is about selling the device, I'd suggest keeping it as is and only re-lock it if you decide to sell it. Your warranty is gone anyway since you've used the ASUS Unlock tool once..
