[Q] battery life and scratch resistance - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What are people getting for battery life after months of owning the phone? Also how resistant is the phone's screen from scratches? I want to take off the plastic but dont want to scratch the screen before my case and protector comes in 2 days.

It is easily scratched. I used it two weeks with great care but still got noticable scratches.

I've been using mine with no screen protector or case for 4 months, sharing a pocket with a bunch of stuff including two metal Leatherman Squirt multi-tools, and it wasn't until recently that I found the first scratch on my screen (it's tiny and at the edge in a bezel area without any display under it).
However, depending on which color you get, the anodized coating on some variants isn't as durable. I have a "copper" Z3, but the bottom of the phone now has a lot of bare aluminum. As said above - this is with no case for 4 months sharing a pocket with hard objects.

The front is about as good in scratch resistance as any other flagship phone, its the back I would worry about. The back glass is really "soft", for the lack of a better word.

True, the back part is not really scratch resistant. I have a lot of scratches on the back. They are small and only visible when under bright light but none the less they are scratches. Buy a screen protector for the back too.

Yep, using glass protectors front/back, in my case.

Does the screen easily scratched?

I am waiting for my Galaxy S6 arrives. Does the screen easily scratched? I don't want to take extremely good care of it.
And also does anyone try using tempered glass protector? How does it feel compared to regular?
I have preordered an extended battery case and they promised to give me a tempered glass protector. I'll let you all know how it works once I get them.

Can you please link me to the extended battery case you ordered.
Thank you.
I got the zagg tempered glass protector and it feels pretty solid. IMO the gorilla glass 4 feels a bit better but it's super clear and feels nice.
The S6 is made of Gorilla glass corning 4 so it's pretty tough but it wouldn't hurt to have some sort of protection. I have IQShield screen protectors and it provides full coverage. Check them out on Amazon. Also it's currently on sale.

My screen on my S6 has scratched really really easy, only had a few days and there is a one inch very deep scratch on the screen. in all the years I've had a phone I've never scratched a phone so badly as this. The worsted thing is i have no idea how it happened. had my S5 for about 18 months with not one single mark or anything to the phone screen

Sorry to hear about the deep scratch. I don't have a screen protector on mine yet, though I just received the BodyGuardz Ultra Tough. I've been careful, but I'm not using a case or screen protector at all currently and have just been putting it in my pocket thus far. I would say scratches were much easier to put on my previous phone, which was the crusty old S3.
OP, I think that the screen can and will scratch somewhat easily. I think that if you don't want to take extra precautions with the phone on a day-to-day basis, I would recommend getting a screen protector and/or a case. These just allow you to be a little more clumsy and not have any repercussions. (or fewer repercussions.)

doesn't scratch easily but my oleophobic coating is already wearing and ive had it since april 10th
i've had the phone since launch and been using it without screen protector and have not notice any scratches at all. Im not careful with my phone too. Put it in my pocket with keys and change regularly and put it screen down, since the camera makes the phone slippery when it's on smooth uneven surfaces. With previous phones, nexus 4 and 5, they would have some micro scratches by now. I dont get this obsession over getting scratches on a screen that are not noticeable when the screen is on. You are only going to have this phone for a year or two so i dont see what the big deal is.
I got a small scratch after using the phone for one day. Probably due to a grain of sand in my pocket or something like that. I'm planning on getting a screen protector not only to prevent further scratching, but also to ensure the current scratch won't be visible to the naked eye. Albeit knowing that there already is a scratch truly grinds my gear.

I sometimes miss my old moto x 2013-- that thing NEVER scratched no matter what. I had that thing naked for a two years and I re-sold it in immaculate condition. I dropped that thing dozens of times, and it was never harmed once. I miss that thing...
I had a fine scratch on mine after a couple days of use. Luckily Rogers let me exchange mine anyway cause mine had a slightly looser than normal home button.
Quickly put on a tempered glass protector on both the front and back.

I'd recommend the Tempered Glass Screen Protector,Thin, transparent.
Tempered glass protection screen of mobile phone film is currently the most high-end products to strengthen the protection of the.
The protective layer thickness of only 0.1 mm, can completely cover the original screen surface, prevent external damage, scratches, more shock absorbent, 5 times higher than the standard PET film. The video has no effect on the screen.

Thank you for your opinion-- do you have a brand that you recommend? I think we all know that glass screen protectors are the way to go, but it's a matter of which company you buy from that determines the success or failure of the screen protector.
i scratched the flash/heart rate monitor sensor glass, luckily everything still works and i'm thankful it wasn't my camera lens
I have the S6 for one week nude and no scratches, though I am very careful.
I am just a little annoyed by the reflection rainbow effect the screen does under sunlight, will a tempered glass take it away?

Plastic Screen Protector that actually seals around the edges.

So after several failures with glass protectors and halo effects with all of them, I decided to try a PET version-- just to get some protection on the glass, thinking that I would just have to deal with the feel of it.
I tried amFilm (have used their stuff before, and it was pretty good).
Well, now a few days later, the screen does not have any halo effect. It sticks to the sides very well, and doesn't seem to be up-lifting at all. The feel is still plasticy, but that's about expected. It certainly doesn't feel as smooth as glass, but I'll take it. The glass ones were pealing off, haloing, etc etc, and this is a perfect solution. I'm sure that in time, I will come to grow used to the feel, and it won't even be a hindrance at all.
I am using the same one, someone mentioned this one on the glass SP thread so I gave it a try.
Been using it for a week now, and it's already showing some signs of use, a few scratches, pretty sure it's gonna be all over in a couple of months. I also have misty fingers, so gliding over the screen is painful in times.
One thing I don't like about it is the cutout for the front camera, they could've easily just made a hole instead of how it cuts off on the top. Also, it does lift a little bit when I press the volume or power buttons, I think I have aligned it pretty OK too, but nothing is perfect I guess.

I'll have to watch out for that as I go along. At least there's a lifetime warranty- so when it does wear out, you can get another one for free!
I've been hearing some good things about this products. Thanks, I think that I'll try it out.
Using the same thing, been 2 weeks and it does get scratched easily but good enough for now. Been using amFilm for awhile too. They already made tempered glass for 6s, wish they would make one for our phones.

The TPU screen protectors seem to work. I have one on mine and its holding on really well. They are much like the TPU cases, a soft feeling gel like film. They are completely floppy, so dont try to pull up like the harder plastic films, they are also virtually invisible.
There are downsides, they are very floppy and stretchy, so can be tricky to fit. Im also not too sure how durable they will be. They recover from some marks quite easily, but they can snag. This is the one I have on mine..

Curious to know what's the point of a screen protector these days with the glass being so scratch resistant.
I.e on my iphone 5, i had it for 2 years no protector. only scratches are ones not visible. Unless you throw your phone around like a toy, put it in a pocket full of sand ect, You really wont scratch it.

For me it's "just in case" protection. I'm very careful with my toys, and even more so with this expensive phone. There are times when things happen and by me just being me and it falling off my lap, all it takes is that one unlucky fall when it hits the corner of the chair leg. I've never broken a phone screen, yet...

Gorilla Glass is about as scratch resistant as cheese. Its actually worse than normal glass. Gorilla Glass is somewhat shock resistant and highly flexible, but not scratch resistant.

I'm calling you on this one, I work with glass every day, and i'm around an engineering shop daily, so there's plenty of potential for my glass to scratch. It's held up fine for 2 years no protector.
Glass on the Mohs scale is 5.5
Gorilla glass is 6.8
Diamond is 10.

'Glass' as in soda glass maybe, but plenty of other types are better. 6.8 isnt that great. It certainly doesn't explain why my last phone got a scratch after falling face first on a brand new clean carpet!
Scratching isnt all about hardness anyway, its only part of the story and is sold to us in marketing BS. A softer object can scratch a harder one, all that happens is that the softer one is damaged more. This notion that hardness alone is all there is to scratching or breaking is completely wrong and needs to stop.
A rough piece of metal, almost any metal, will tear up the surface of GG very easily indeed.
I bought a skinomi film that wraps around both edges...there self healing too
Anyone tried Pleson?

scratch resistance VERY CONCERNING

Ive not had this phone for even a month and have never dropped it or put it together with any hard materials like keys. I just noticed a huge scratch about an inch and a half long on the front screen.
This is extremely unnerving especially being advertised as an improved scratch resistance compared to previous model.
How can gorilla glass 5 possibly scratch never having been in contact with any hard surfaces??
It's honestly to the point where it just seems ridiculous. I've had my s7 over a year and not a single scratch and I've dropped it multiple times.
I have same experience. Im taking care of my phone a lot. I dont even put it on the table if i dont out a piece of paper under it. In pocket phone is alone. Most of the time phone is in the case and even after this care the phone have several scratches. So, yeah, the phone isnt so scratch resistant. I hope i can find some proper flagship from metal next year, because as most i love this phone, this is unnerving.
A little help is a dbrand skin. You will get a new look, no scratches, and you can hide front panel behind the glass protector.
My screen has a scratch even though I've never put my phones screen down. Back is protected by cover. The only place screen is in contact with anything is in my pocket. My previous phone had Gorilla glass 3 and scratched only after a year.
Bought the S8 today along with the Samsung Led View Cover, hope that will keep my device from scratching :fingers-crossed:
Yes the scratch resistance of the S8 is not as good as in previous models. Gorilla glass 5 seems to be a downgrade (from version 4) or Samsung hasn't really put gorilla glass on S8.
The glass of my S6 had much more resistance to scratches.
I have only the Samsung Cover Silicone , Curved screen protector dont feet and killed the touch so i take it off
Yup. The back is also supposed to be GG5. I've had a screen protector on the phone since day one. However I went ONE day without a case or skin on it, and sat it down on the table at a restaurant. Result; several micro scratches on the back. There was nothing on the table that was harder than glass, so it should not have scratched.
SO glad I put a TGSP on the front (with LOCA glue). Probably going to get a skin for the back. I had a clear on on it, but the midnight Black shows every speck of dust or bubble under the skin. My wife's Orchid Grey doesn't show dust or anything, and her clear skin is nearly invisible.
I would be interested in starting a class action lawsuit against corning. They seem to be the only ones who don't hold any accountability to produce quality parts or to accurately represent their product improvements.
they'll just deny it until the bitter end like their Note 7 debacle
I noticed some scuffing on the black frame from small debris getting trapped between the frame/body of the phone and the case causing scuffs/scratches when you move around with the phone in your pocket.

That's why I put a skin on mine that covers the back and sides.
People just must not look after the phone to well ive had my s8 for 6 months no scratches nothing and its in my pocket with keys and everything also dropped it 2 meters and not a scratch dent or chip. The front is gorilla glass and the rest is lumia glass as the manual states. Dont know how anyone could scratch the s8 without immense pressure being applied.

I am super careful with my phones and keep my phone in a case and carry it around in a microfiber case as I did my S7 and s6 Edge and this is the first phone that I have ever scratched and could not figure out how it scratched. I have 2 friends with S8s. And both scratched uber easy. The screen should be way more scratch resistant for the price. Maybe just some of the screens are defective, but for the cost the screens should be way more durable.

The screen can get scratched (kind of worn out) if you keep the phone in your jean pocket face down (facing thighs). The stitching seams are enough to scratch it. So I have learnt to keep mine facing outwards.
Honestly, this is the saddest part of the phone. Ever since I got my S8 I have been taking damn good care of it and used a case since day one and at least 4 times per week I wipe it with a microfibre cloth, immediately wipe away fingerprints and still after all this, mini scratches all over the front glass. Even my iPhone 6 which I used for 3 years had better scratch resistance.
I'm in the same situation. I got mine at the end of august and have a scratch an inch long from the top to the bottom.

Any one using S7 without a screen protector?

As the title suggests guys. After spending tons of money in numerous screen protectors i found out that, a protector that's completely clear and covers the full screen doesn't exist. So any one using their phone without one? If yes, then how is it scratching up? Are the scratches too much? I absolutely baby my phone and, after 1 year it looks completely new. As i intend on using it for one more year, how do you think it will hold up without a screen protector? Any input will be appreciated.

Good to hear that. Eases my mind.
Everyday items shouldn't leave any scratches on your phone (keys, coins, tabletops etc etc) its the smaller materials the causes most scratches. Sand is the worst, rock/cement particles and obviously dropping the device will leave marks. I've used my phone since launch and the glass is perfect. Just use a case with a good lip over the glass and your good.

I don't mean to scare you but any unprotected drop over 4ft has potential to crack the screen. Ive cracked the lower left and upper right corners of my S7 flat. There's also a crack from one corner to an edge which passes through the screen. I've since ordered https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B06XHYGG56/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Every day objects are fine, concrete and drops, not so much.

I know that drops will essentially kill the phone. I intend to use a case for that. What i am worried about is how will the screen scratch up in day to day use without a protector.
I have never used a screen protector on any of my phones. I have never had a cracked screen. I don't see how they can really work and they generally look crap on an expensive phone pretty quickly. One thing, the S7 is a pretty heavy phone compared to the S4 which weighed nothing, so if you drop it the screen is possibly more likely to crack if it hits something. I alway use a case and that has saved the phone many times.

I baby my phone too -- always in the same front pocket -- nothing else in that pocket with it, to protect the screen -- always lay it face-down on clean and flat surfaces, etc.
When I got my phone, I searched high and low for a quality glass screen protector too, and you are right, there is none (that works well with a case). I figured I could try no screen protector, because the Corning Gorilla glass these days is relatively impervious to scratches and dirt, so I've been going with a slim case and no screen protector for a year now.
Not a scratch anywhere, and it looks much better than previous phones with screen protectors (especially the plastic ones).

Thank you so much man. I was really confused about using the phone without a protector. Your experience would really help me make the decision.
Okay, so this an update. After so many encouraging info from fellow members, i have been rocking my s7 witnout a screen protector for about a week. And i am happy go say that the display isnt as fragile as i thought it to be. Still no scratch, knock on wood. This is a thank you to all the people who answered and helped me take my decision.

No protector here - and no scratches. I've used two different cases (Spigen and a Diztronic). The screen stays off any surfaces. Ordinary items have not scratched my screen.

I haven't had a screen protector on my S7 since the day I bought it. That was about 2 years ago and there still aren't any scratches on it at all. I always make sure that the screen is against my leg in my shorts/trouser pocket and my right hand leg pocket is solely for my phone. Nothing else ever goes in there besides the phone and that seems to work pretty well. I do have a decent rear cover (VRS Design) that has a nice raised lip around the screen too. I haven't dropped the phone yet though.

I think new batches of S7 are not Gorilla Glass. Mine is 2 months old and in 2 weeks it developed a lot of small scratches and 3-4 very deep ones. I never had a phone with such a bad glass and i wear it with care, never with coins or keys in my pocket or other mistreating. I still have a havey used old S2, S5, OP3, all worn for lots of time by me, all in perfect condition, not a single scratch (never had a screen protector on any of these). However my new S7 is totally ruined as the glass is all scratched. This cannot be Gorilla Glass. It even has a lot of very small scratches in perfectly predictable places on the screen where I touch more often, clearly developed by finger usage because it fits with most used places of on screen controls/menus. It is worse than a plastic protector actually. Tried to return after two weeks because it was clear that any easy touch causes a new scratch. I even doubted it is an original Samsung product. It went to official Samsung service and returned as not deffective (but proven to be genuine Samsung). After this experience I sworn never to buy a Samsung again.

Worth taking off the protective covers?

Hi there,
my Nex S Global ROM was shipped with protective plastic covers glued to the front and the back of the phone.
They feel a bit plasticky and I was thinking about taking them off. Do you think it's worth it?
How easy is it to get scratches on the back and on the screen after doing so?
Do the back and the screen also feel as plasticky as the covers?
Thanks
V

I removed the front protector and kept the back one. I stopped using screen protectors about 4 years ago and have never had a scratch with Gorilla Glass. I kept the back one on for no particular reason because it's always in a case anyway.
I'd keep it on until I got some tempered glass or some kind of protection.
I never got scratches on any of my previous phones, but the Nex S got some small deep scratches within a week of me taking off the plastic. I don't think they use gorilla glass. Definitively something softer as the phone has only been in my jean and coat pockets.
It definitely is not gorilla glass as mine got cracked In top left and bottom right corners when it fell down from pocket while jogging

It is Gorilla Glass but I'm not sure which version. I've had no scratches in the four months I've owned it and it stays in my front pocket like yours.

Gorilla glass protects from scratches and not drops. Impact will crack almost all glass.

The back is definitely softer, lots of small scratches, even though I use a case.

It probably is but it's also the part where the phone rests 99% of the time.
I removed the front protector about 2 months ago still don't see any scratches
I've already bought the same protector for the back in aliexpress for 1dolar ou something like that, but it's exactly the same, and I wanted a 9H protector for the back, not a pelicule...
Has anyone ever tough/seen this?
