[Q] Combining Battery Saving Tips: Am I Doing This Right? - General Questions and Answers

Hi all,
I am currently sporting a Huawei Ascend Mate 7 with good battery life. But I'm fascinated by the possibility to make it even better. That's why with help of this forum I've done several things. But am I doing it right? Are these apps not working against each other or am I missing something essential?
I am on android 4.4.2, rooted my phone and took the following steps:
1) installing Xposed and Greenify, to hibernate a lot of apps
2) Then I also got Amplify, to limit several well-known wakelocks and alarms (selected with help of the database ofcourse)
3) I also have SetCPU and have used it to create an offscreen powersave profile to underclock my device.
4) Using Link2SD I've linked a whole lotta apps to my sd-card
5) Finally I am also using BootManager to limit apps from starting up after a reboot
Is this a good start? Are there better ways to go? Smarter apps to use? Apps to stop using? What is your setup and what am I doing wrong?
For example: this morning I've installed 2 battery. But there also is Deep Sleet Battery Saver, or Wifi Matic or Smart Battery Saver.
Who can shed some light on this subject for me?

that sounds dam good to me OP!
another trick i use that i dont really read about is airplane mode.
by stand by is **** and my battery drains quick over night.
if no airplane mode my phone drop 15 - 20 % over night.
with airplane mode my phone drop 2 - 6 % over night.
so when your not using it , it really helps.
cheers mate!

Thanks! I've also heard not to use anything except Greenify, and all battery savers are useless. Don't know who to trust yet, but I did laugh when my phone just popped up a message saying 2 battery was using power by running in the background
When I'm sleeping I always go to ultra power mode, which only lets through alarms, calls and texts I believe. A sort of airplane mode, so I totally agree!

how long does your phone last anyways if you fully charge it and let it die on its own with average use?

I took some advice, dont know why exactly but it sounded good, and uninstalled my battery saver. Now I have Greenify running and SetCPU for a screen off profile, and some wakelocks controlled with Amplify.
I'm currently on for 1 day and 20 hours and have 52% charge left. But I must say I'm a very moderate user, 1 day and 16 hours is screen off time. Usually I only really use it a lot in the evening on the couch, but yesterday there was a great movie so I didn't bother. I think I will charge again somewhere tomorrow, making it last around 3 days easy (but ofcourse I still want more )

what i did to get 4% battery loss an hour

*edit: i posted this because i'm actually happy with my battery life*
1) install setcpu and have profiles-- screen off 216/216, overheat 216/600, and a sliding scale based on how much battery is left
2) uninstall battery monitor widget, and instead use anycut to put a shortcut to battery info on my home screen.-- i realized that i was running down by battery by constantly turning on my screen to look at this beautiful widget. therefore, i found an even less battery consuming option AND i limit myself to checking battery percentage once an hour
3) turn down screen brightness completely in the evening and in well lit areas-- aka work.
4) use titanium to freeze bloatware. it was brought up how this bloat showed up in running apps still and i used bloat freezer to freeze them again. HOWEVER, bloat freezer for some reason, made my battery life worsen, so i uninstalled and went back to titanium. however, now, these apps do not show up in running apps, but i have "lost" my account. i.e. can't find it to unfreeze if i wanted to.
5) used battery calibration and ran the phone down until it died, and then charged up completely while off, two nights in a row...
6) changed the secret menu to "auto"
7) removed the music player widget from my homescreen, replacing it instead with a shortcut to my all music playlist
things i did not budge on
there were things that i could've cut down, but would have, in my opinion, dumbed down the phone.
1) autosync both email addresses
2) beejive im is running at all times with push notifications, alert on the first message
3) words with friends also has push notifications enabled
4) i use shopkick constantly
5) "4G" service- its what im paying for, and i enjoy the extra speed, so i never turn it off.

First of all, only calibrate your battery once. The phone needs to take those reading for the battery to drain evenly. It can take awhile for it to read the entire battery. So just charge to 100 percent, clear battery stats and leave it for awhile. Secondly, 4 percent in an hour isn't all that bad. it should be more like 1 or 2 percent but 4 isn't terrible.
What is the secret menu?
I'm losing around 10% per hour.... moderate use.. I calibrated the battery once, and I don't really have any apps in the background. I also froze apps using BloatFreezer. I have no idea what to do at this point.
going to try this tomorrow morning, the phone prior to this replacement was dying in 5 hours with no use and data turned off while I was at work, that is terrible I would be happy if I get 10 hours, haha.
I recently bought the g2x and I must say I'm very disappointed in the battery life. How do you check what the battery % loss per hour?

Thought that maybe there is an app for that....
If there is, not sure what it is haha, but I rather just not download an app for that and just use math But really, the battery life on my phone is horrible, part of me wants to return it under buyer's remorse and part of me wants to wait for gingerbread to see if it works? Not sure what to do. I don't want to end up sticking with a crappy battery life phone.
So how do we access the "secret menu", and what do we change to auto?
for your 4% drop per hour, what was your phone usage? did you pretty much leave the phone idle or maybe 20 min of usage? that makes a big difference

Dial *#*#4636#*#* > Phone Information > Set Preferred Network Type
I'm also getting around 4% per hour. Decent usage too (little over an hour of phone time with bluetooth, couple hours of web browsing over the day, alternating between wifi and cell radio). I got this through a battery calibration only.

This is an average of 4% drop over an 8-9 hour period. Over that time, I probably talked on the phone for about a half an hour, had iming running, so iw ould answer ims intermittently- probably 20 mins of iming, scanned a few things and checked in using shopkick, browsed for an hour cumulatively, read emails as they came in, and read and answered maybe 20 texts?
i would say that is medium/light usage. since i am in and out of meetings, i would only get a 1-2% drop some hours, and since i was talking on the phone, a bigger drop then...

1. i dont believe in those "power saving" apps because sometimes they use just as much battery as it saves.
2. what the point of having a smartphone, or even a cell phone, if youre always on airplane mode?
3. i posted this because i am actually happy with my battery life.
I need stats from a poweruser. People keep reporting 20+ hrs but realistically u let ur phone sit for the whole d day and text once or twice. I use my phone all day. Thats what I bought it for.

Samsung crams SO many features into their phone I doubt you or really anyone uses all of them regularly (it's not like you can't turn anything you want back on). Also some of these are just temporary when you really need to conserve power; like Power Saver, which really degrades the performance of the processor and GCU or switching to 2g data.
Tip No. 11 Turn your Phone Off...
Thanks a lot.. But if turn off the device saves a lot of battery jeje.

- Turn off mobile data when you're not using it. This can save you about 3 days of battery live. In one go.
- Turn off Auto Sync. Did you seriously think something that connects to the internet all the time did not drain your battery?
- Don't use Auto modes. Yes, this includes brightness. IT'S A SENSOR, GENIUS. Sensors require power. Just turn down the brightness yourself. (30% is more than sufficient in ordinarily lit rooms.)

Well have you every been stuck without a way of charging? There's times I know I wont be able to charge my phone and it might die so i do these things in order to improve and prolong my battery life.
Take a brick charger with you :laugh:
Unless you mean to do this when you're running low once in a blue moon, then ok.
Otherwise what's the point of the phone?
I do the literal opposite of your list.
Full brightness (unless I'm in a dark room)
4g
Syncing 4 gmail accounts
Syncing Microsoft exchange calendar
Power saving mode off
Facebook connected
I do have a fully charged original note 3 spare battery on me at all times though.
But I rarely need to use it before 7 pm (12 hours after taking it off the charger in the morning).

Yes, I do have. My solution is tha I will carry 3 oem batteries...plus a 10000 mah battery power bank.
I only got the spare battery yesterday.
I was still running on full mode before the spare battery. I made sure my phone was always charging (while at office, car or home).

Indeed... I do 7 hours a day by train, in which I have a 70% chance that I might have to spend half of that checking the travel advisor for an alternative route. I know what it is like all too well....
To me battery life is more valuable than knowing my neighbour managed to write a Q on her visit to the bathroom.

I think juice defender does that.
The thing I like about the Note 3 is that battery life is not an issue anymore, provided that I can charge it overnight.
Today, I've been on battery for 17 hrs straight, including phone calls, 90 minutes of navigation, Internet use etc. And there's still 28% battery left.
My point is: if the battery life is much less, there's something wrong, and you should investigate that before turning to measures like in the first post. Use an app like Wake Lock Detector or Better Battery Stats to check what is draining your battery.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using xda app-developers app
I don't actually have a Note 3. Still on Note II but I check in here for feedback.
I would suggest people to purchase the Android Tuner app. It ain't cheap unless u buy it in a sale, but it crams many utilities into one program meaning you don't have to run several different apps. These include battery information/tweaks, overclock/undervolt, ram management, screen off tweaks like disable data or wifi when there's no network activity such as streaming music, backup options like titanium pro, etc etc and much much more of varying complexity depending on how far you want to delve into it.
All in all, a wonderful app and worth every penny.

could someone clarify this for me?
when you turn off
"Auto Sync"
or enable
"Restrict Background Data"
what does it do exactly?
does it mean I would no longer get notifications for WhatsApp, Twitter, Gmail?

Looks like I'll have to bring my charger to work..

So I got the s8+ two days ago and I gotta say, I'm not that impressed with the battery, my nexus 6p was more reliable.. Just got home from work and had ~17% left with 3.5h sot. This means that when I get home from work I'll have to charge my phone for half an hour atleast before I can go out and enjoy my spare time, I can't just go out straight from work
Anyone have any pointers?
Some key notes, no wifi at work (working within the government in Sweden is retarded)
And the 4g is pretty weak.
Brightness is around 50% and I have disabled bixby and 100 other services (package disabler)
Played games for like 1h
Some browsing, no video watching
Nobody called me during the say because I'm an asshole
That's pretty much it
Two days isn't really a good test to see what the battery life will be like. Especially since you are installing apps and setting up the phone.

I suggest use a black theme to save battery, as AMOLED screens doesn't need much power producing black color.
Also in the bottom of Battery settings, there's "always sleeping apps". Add all apps here that you don't need running in the background.
Also disable mobile internet if not needed, or at least turn on data saver.

WOW! I wonder what's draining you so quickly? I'm getting right at 7hrs SOT with no WiFi and marginal cell service at work!
You must've disabled an app that keeps pinging the system. Try to enable all apps and go from there. You shouldn't have to disable anything. Just watch for resource hungry apps like Facebook or Snapchat

Yeah im not enjoying this.. it's been 3 hours, barely used the phone and im down to 80% already (30 min sot)
I renabled everything in package disabler again, won't be using it untill people get more comfortable and researched in the subject of matter.
4g signal is pretty bad at work though, and these idiots dont have wifi lol. (getting like 1-2 bars)
Maybe it was package disabler causing the problem, if you disable something which something else relies on it might constantly try and connect to the disabled package causing battery draining
if you do continue to have a poor experience i definitely suggest using a pure black theme, This will boost your SOT buy a few hours minimum

How are people getting 8-9 hours SOT... HOW

You may have a dud. I'm coming from a 6p too and I usually have about 30% batter at the end of the day when I was shutting down right before leaving. Hey man. I had this same issue when i bought my phone. Apparently my phone wasn't going into deep sleep mode. Install an app called CPU spy and you'll be able to see if you're phone isn't going into deep sleep due to an app. If your phone is going into deep sleep but you still have battery drain like that. It could be a defective device. Btw the issue I had was facebook app. I disabled it and now I'm getting at least 8:30 hours sot.

I'll look into that theme, thank you for the tip Vermicious!
I am going to install cpu spy, I do use facebook, i dont know why tbh, might actually disable it and might just use the messenger app whitch is the app i pretty much only use anyways (for social media)
I have verified that I can return the phone unlike my note 3 that I bought a couple of years ago (battery laster 4 hours first charge, wanted to return it but since i had peeled the plastic off they rejekted it lol, such dicks xD)
Other than the battery being a big off the device is absolutely incredible, I am happy I gave samsung another chance, (I had sworn to never use a samsung device again after the note3)
again, many thanks for taking your time to look into my issue!

Using Snapchat with 4G, is location, nfc and bluetooth also turned on?
That would explain the bad battery.
Snapchat is a battery hog, maybe also using some facebook services that you allowed location on and GPS is turned on.
I get around 6h SOT on 4G constant, no facebook permissions and not using snapchat.
Hi,
Thank you for the fast response. I have location turned on because of snapmaps so I will turn that off and limit some of Snapchat's permissions. Is there anything else that someone can suggest please it is crucial for me that my phone lasts all day because eventhough I dedicate quite a lot to Snapchat I also need it for word and Samsung internet for at least 2h each day.
Thank you again
Reduce your time on Snapchat and it'll last longer.
I know Snapchat drains my battery but it's the standby that is killing me and I already have optimised the apps and have Greenify but it seems so far that turning off location has helped quite a bit with general SOT so thank you. Also with Snapchat I only used it for 45mins and I know that it drain a lot but it just goes down too fast in general.

You don't generally need Greenify in Oreo and Pie, since they optimise apps pretty nicely on it's own.
Rather turn on advanced optimizations, look at the permission you gave to different apps (those also include the Gapps, they take too much advantage of all the permissions you give to the each app).
Also do check if you have Wifi scanning always on in the advanced wifi settings, that also lessens a battery by a margin.
Face unlock also reduces the SOT of the phone in my practice.
Some of the advices I saw on the forum, and mainly they work for me.
Also, if Gapps are spending loads of battery go to the recovery and wipe cache, let it rebuild cache with a charge or two and see if there are any results.
Thank you, I have cleared the cache and am letting it rebuild. The SoT now actually seems pretty normal just my phone tends to use 2-3% and hour on standby which doesn't seem normal. Thank you for your help though.
@echo246 Bro,
Move to stock. I am also using 128Gb variant and unlocked, wiped and moved back to stock using mega-unbrick tool. I am on OB3 pie and now I am getting 5 hr SOT + 2 days standby time in pure stock. use the stock battery optimizing features. Don't use any 3rd party app since it need to run in the back ground always to get the result. But then the result will be reverse. Also, don't be too curious and open the phone every 1 minute to check weather the battery is draining or not. Let it sleep. Be patient for one or two full battery circle (100% to 1%) get the result. You will get it. I am also in dual SIM always on 4G, location is in "ON" status. No 3rd party apps using for battery saving. Pure stock is always best and most suitable for every phone. as it made exclusively for that phone
I opened "apps" under settings and went through each and every app + system processes after the end of the first battery circle and which ever process or app used more battery, restricted it's back ground battery usage also all the installed apps too. So now no head ache. getting whats app notification even after optimised it. Not using chrome. using samsung beta browser.
Hi,
Thanks this is great thanks. I need Google pay though I tried what the other suggested and 36mins SoT with 3 hours on standby with a normal brightness without power saving mode on is unheard of for me. Thank you so far but is there anyway to make Snapchat more efficient?

I don't know whether you have replied to me or not. Anyway I assume so and replying.
Sorry I am not a snapchat user. I knew that always Facebook and whatsapp consuming more battery since it is running on background. But if you do anything, you won't get proper notifications. Only way for restricting background service is rooting. So forget all those, let the phone run as it is. OP6 is having a learning system how we use apps and accordingly it will distribute the battery. So let it learn from your usage and it will restrict itself.
(Bro, I was also a SOT + standby hunter like you, but now learned to leave everything to phone itself by controlling unwanted eagerness)
Yeah thanks by limiting the WiFi settings on not to scan and turning off location I have amazing standby now and my SoT without even having power saving on is a lot better now. Most of my problems come from Snapchat anyway but they are rewriting the very old and slow app ATM. Thank you
I have analyzed it and it turns out it is just Snapchat while using it 30 mins of using it and I'm down to 77% and I have used nothing else. Hope that snap Inc get the fix in faster coz they started the rewrite of the android code a year ago so hopefully it is done soon.
Some days I get 15hrs SOT without charging for 3 days. It all depends on how heavily your using the device
I also guess it depends on what apps you use because yesterday I had to do lots of research on my phone (I am a student which is why I need good phone battery and also why I use snapchat so much) and without power saving mode on I used 7% battery an hour (on Samsung Internet). My standby is now amazing because greenify just force closes snapchat now whenever my phone is off and when using snapchat away from home I turn location off (snapmaps) and used every optimisation for it possible. This has fixed that problem really well thank you. Yesterday I used snapchat and Samsung Internet and Excel and YouTube quite a lot and I got 5hrs SoT with only using power saving below 50% and with 14hrs standby. This therefore concludes that snapchat is a killer for every single android phone in existence (verified this on my old S6, my friends S6 edge, a S7 edge, a OP 5 and a Huawei P20 Pro). Thank you for all your help and if someone finds a new way to further improve this, then please also share your trick

I don't have anything special enabled. I just turn data off when I'm not using it, I turn location off when it's not needed. This also includes me playing Clash Royale for at least 3 hours a day sometimes more. When you're using SnapChat and your data you're also using your camera and location. GPS is one of the most battery hogging pieces of hardware on your phone. Right now I'm pushing 6 hours of SOT and I haven't charged my phone in over 24 hours and it's looking like I have 13 more hours left on my battery.

Google App Causing severe battery drain??

Anyone else seeing this? My Google App is causing severe battery drain. It's been off the charger for 3 hours, sot is 1:52 and battery is at 85%. Google is accounting for 17.4% of drain and only active for 6 minutes and background for 12h7m. I have it set to sleep when not in use. I was watching youtube this morning for 14 minutes and it only accounted for 1.3% drain.
Yesterday it accounted for 20.3% drain and only active for 6m and background 13h 21 m. Day before that 11.5% with active 7m and background 8h 14m.
This is weird. Coming from a Pixel 4XL and didn't see this much battery drain with so little use.

Haven't noticed that on the Note 20 Ultra but on my LG V60 it was about as bad as that. I have installed Nap Time by Francisco Franco which puts the phone into a deeper doze. It's a root app but can be used without root with a few adb commands. It's one of the first apps I install on all my phones.

Has it been doing that since you got it? How long have you had it? Because usually Google is saving a lot of your stuff and creating backups in the background but you can deny background activity by going into the app and ticking the slider over to deny background activity but that might preven automatic backups and saves.

I've had it a week and a half and it's been doing that since day one when I look at history. It takes as much as 25% on some days. I cleared the cache today and hoping that may help.
It's dropped 4% since I posted and I haven't used the phone at all. That's in about 20 minutes.

That's not normal.. is there any updates to that specific app or able to tap uninstall on it to roll it back to a possible previous version?
Edit: this is the screen I'm talking about to stop background activity.
I guess it's still not showing the pictures that are being uploaded.. I'm going to talk to the owner.
I'll try rolling back any updates, but I do see when I do a general internet search that other people have had the problem with Android 10 and Samsung devices. Most have fixed it by disabling the app. But that's not an option I want to take. LOL
I've cleared cache and rebooted. I'll see if I still see a large battery drain. If so, I'll uninstall and reinstall and see if that fixes it.

By the way, do you have a ton of apps and pictures and all kinds of stuff on the phone? Because if you do the carrier's don't give very fast upload speeds and if it's trying to save a ton of data it's definitely going to take quite a while on carrier data.. I'd use a business or someone's wifi if possible so it can do it quickly.

I have a lot of apps disabled and yes you can still use it, don't know anything about kilallapps though. If I charge my phone to 100% before going to bed and lay it on the table until morning in 10 hours it won't lose 5%. depending on what apps you have installed may not be quite the same. And yes it puts the phone into a deep sleep. You can have it turn bluetooth, wifi and others off while in doze
