New Owner Q re Root/Case and Charger - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok have mine but still yet to mess around with it
Few questions
What is the easiest and simple way to root?
I am looking for a flip cover case any recommendations?
I want to buy a charger but are there usb cables that can do the job?

I would recommend following the guide in the link below and unlock your boot loader first and foremost. You can then flash a custom recovery (TWRP) and root. After that you can leave everything as stock rooted or flash away to your heart's content.
I got the official Oneplus flip case for my OPO and its great, would recommend it.
Not sure what you mean, are you after a charger or just a USB cable? I would recommend ordering a good 2A charger via Amazon or ebay.

The official flip case I will see if any good ones on Amazon. For the charger I take it the 2A charger like the below
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pixnor-UK-p...TF8&qid=1426865664&sr=8-1&keywords=2a+charger
However is there a USB cable that I would specifically require?
What about the One plus toolbox for rooting

Anyone tried this?

Don't use a toolbox. They cause problems. Plus, this phone is ridiculously easy to unlock and root, we have two very easy to follow guides here. And using a toolbox allows the user to do things to the phone without actually knowing what's going on, it bypasses some crucial fastboot learning experience. Anyone who's modifying their phone needs this fastboot experience, because it's fastboot that'll save you if/when something goes wrong in future. I have a guide here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2839471
It's very detailed and easy to follow, and if you have any questions about any of the processes I'd be happy to help you.

DIY Atrix 2 HD Dock * Updated OP*

I have had a project in mind for a few weeks now. I have been contemplating making a homemade HD dock for the Atrix 2. I know the dock is not that expensive, but I just can't justify buying one. Let me know what you guys think.
Enough positive response ill post pictures for it along the way/step by step.
EDIT: I forgot to mention but i will also try to add a powered usb hub so the phone will also be a Usb Host for External Storage, Mouse/Keyboards, and any other things we can think of.
EDIT#2: I have not abandoned you all, just ran into a busy patch with work and home life. Should anyone feel the need to give it a go by all means. Through my research it looks like the only way to create a fully working HD Dock is to modify another one designed for another Phone. I have found posts on the interwebs to suggest this. I dont believe the Webtop Will activate with just a Micro usb and Micro HDMI cable plugged in simultainously. ( Sorry for any typos )
That sounds great! Good luck with it. Please post pictures/instructions if you can.

In for results! I agree i can't justify buying a dock too.
I about broke down and purchased a dock the other day, but now am I glad I did not, good luck, and keep us posted!!
Good luck and please do post pics.

I was thinking about the same thing. I can't see spending the $ for a chunk of plastic with a micro usb connector in it.
It's simple to make a USB powered with OTG host capability.
Is it that what are you trying to do ?
With the hdmi cable/adaptor i think you get pretty close to a dock.

I don't have any docks so I can't experiment with Webtop... however if you can hardware-wise get a DIY HD dock then I'm sure we can figure out how to patch the necessary apks to get Webtop to activate.
cogeary If you go to this Thread it is an app that tricks your phone into thinking its been connected to something that enables WEBTOP or any other dock options for that matter.

Oh OK, thanks... so in that case it means that in order to get a fully functional HD dock you don't have to modify an official one for a different phone, correct?
No, not technically. I was doing this project just so no extra junk had to be installed as well as the option of adding usb ports to work with webtop .

[Q][Solved] Broken USB socket

Morning forum,
My wife has a Nexus S and the USB port is broken. I can see on the inside of the socket the wires are mashed. Basically I can't charge the phone anymore. Does anyone have any ideas on how I could either fix it, or another way to charge the battery short of getting another Nexus S to charge the battery? It is also out of warranty to I would have to pay to get it fixed. That is going to be my ultimate solution but I would rather look at other ways first. Cash is tight.
Shawn
Maybe buy just a battery charger, that can charge the battery without going through the phone.
I decided to take it apart on look at the socket. I have have a friend that works with micro-electronics to solder in a new usb port. I will get it back today all fixed up (I hope). Thanks for the advice. I did see options for that. Good backup plan.

Did you manage to solder a new USB port? I have the same problem and wondered how difficult the repair is as I have ordered a replacement port from eBay. If you have fixed it please could you ask your friend to provide some tips on how to get the port off and on again.
Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

DIY Car Mount

I´d like to make this a DIY thread, lets put the things we´ve done to spend a little less in accesories, and for sure someone else will make what you did to LETS HELP US ONE ANOTHER!
So guys I wanted to show you how I made my car mount, it´s a little diffucult but well worth it, I used:
1.- Nokia car mount
2.- USB cable
3.- Car lighter usb charger
4.- Aux cable
5.- A lot of tools lol
Guys I know it looks complicated but once you get the hold of it I promise it´s worth it, I reccomend searching for videos on how to open your cars stereo, I had to watch it about 15 times before even dareing to try, when it opened it, I pushed the Aux cable inside and made a hole on the tray passed it through, the USB charger was the same method, close it and you´re done! Im still looking on how to trigger the DOCK function but until now I´m very happy with it,

it seems like the money spent on a one time accessory is still cheaper than replacing an interior dash piece when you're trying to sell the car (if that happens).
i know for me that spending $80 on a hard wired mount kit from pro-clip is much cheaper than getting replacement panels for my S2000...
kudo's for the work, but i guess it all depends on what car you have to determine if it's worth it to be drilling into your interior panels or not.

I'm assuming he means how do you make the mount. But it looks like you used a pre-made mount.
Thread title is a bit inaccurate.
Here are a couple of pictures of my modified orb and the USB cable goes underneath the dash to a car charger that goes into a female port and the two wires that come out of the female port go to the fuse box and the ground. Now the phone is mounted right in my line of sight and it charges at the same time. I've posted this in a few other threads so I hope I'm not getting redundant with these posts but I'm trying to show everybody how simple this is to do and how you can avoid all of the bulk that those aftermarket accessories will give you when you have to mount them to your dashboard or in your cup holder.

[Q] Charging Nexus 9 while using OTG cable/usb hub?

As the title says, I want to charge my Nexus 9 while using a keyboard/mouse and other peripherals that I would have connected to the Nexus 9 through a USB hub. I know it is not always possible to charge through the hub, so I was thinking about something like a 'micro USB splitter" that expands the micro-USB port into 2 micro-USB ports: one for the charger that comes with the Nexus 9, and the second port for a OTG cable/usb hub/etc. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
I did read this post here for the Nexus 7 but not sure if the same is true for the Nexus 9.or if any additional options existed for the 9. Ultimately, I guess I'm wondering if it is unrealistic to expect to find something that charges the device at the same time as using a hub/OTG cable without too much modding or hassle? My device is rooted and I've flashed some mods and tweaked some things on previous devices I've had, but am by no means an expert so I would hope to keep the hacking/modding for something like this to a minimum, if possible. Plus, there's an outside chance I may return the Nexus 9 in the next week so I wouldn't want to get too crazy until I knew for sure I'd be keeping it.
I understand that a specific kernel with certain capabilities may be needed, but I'm unsure how to find out which kernel would work and if it would be compatible with stock ROM or CM12 (when it comes out). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Even if it's a pipe dream, I'd at least know not to continue to waste my time looking for a solution that doesn't exist
I tried this one a few days ago but it did not work: https://sites.google.com/site/sonicboomworld/my-projects/otg-and-charging
Maybe it's possible with the right resistor value.
Edit:
Mod for Nexus 7 - needs kernel support:
https://mehrvarz.github.io/usb-host-mode-power-management-nexus7/
Thanks for the reply - is this kernel still being supported by the dev and is it confirmed working on Nexus 9?
I don't know as i do not own a Nexus 7.
But even if he still supports this kernel it would not help much for the Nexus 9:
A kernel is very hardware specific and the OTG changing issues is even more hardware specific.
There is absolutely no chance that you can simply use the N7 kernel on the N9.
One of the amazing kernel developers (who owns a N9) here at XDA would have to look at it.
Generally I think for "OTG + charging" to work the USB chipset on the device has to support it and/or you have to find out how you could trick the device into enabling this mode (with a certain resistor on the USB connector and/or with a kernel modification).
The bad thing is that no device seems to support the official "USB Accessory Charger Adapter" specification. (see section "OTG micro plugs" here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_On-The-Go for details)
Just to give you more information, there was a nexus 7 kernel by flar2 called ElementalX which had OTG + charging support. He is working on ElementalX for Nexus 9 as well, and he said he may or may not add support for it. If you and maybe others are interested, I'm sure that it will get added upon request.

The company I work for is developing a OTG cable that does exactly that: lets you charge your phone/tablet while using a USB peripheral.
We are testing it in the UK market currently, but not selling in the US at the moment. You can check it out here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sansys-Char...F8&qid=1417298449&sr=8-1&keywords=usb+otg+mlc
We were thinking about doing a kickstarter or indiegogo for it, but not sure the amount of interest in a niche device like this.
Can you confirm that it is working on the Nexus 9? (and/or the Nexus 5)?
If it is, I'll order one immediately. I've been looking for such a thing since I had my Galaxy S2.

I can't confirm that it will work on the Nexus 9, but my partner from China is sending me a sample so I can try it out. I have a Nexus 9 and 5 also, and they'll be the first devices I will test it on.
We've also sent a couple out to some Youtube reviewers as well, so there may be a video review on them soon.
We just put up an Amazon US listing for this cable if any of you in the states want to try it out: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OLKFR44/
I should have one in hand in the middle of the week to test out.

This arrived from Amazon today. Unfortunately I can't get it to work. When the micro usb is plugged into the N9 it lights up blue. At that point I'm able to mount a thumb drive, use a mouse and Playstation controller. But once the other end is plugged into a charger the light goes off and whatever is connected stops working. The N9 begins to charge at that point. If plugged into my PC, same thing.
Note: the blue light goes off when other end is plugged in regardless of if anything else is in use.
BTW, running elementalX kernel and Lollipopalooza rom.

I've heard some people say in certain other situations with OTG + charge, you need to plug everything in first, then plug the OTG cable into the device. Try that and see if it works?

Thats a bummer, thanks for the info.
Would we happen to need a kernel that supports simultaneous charging and data transfer? I bought a usb y cable and that only allows me to use one or the other. Which sucks .
Some devices have been known to work with only modified OTG cables such as galaxy tablets and experia phones.
What would this modification be?
I finally got a chance to test out these cables. I thought my first cable was busted so I ordered a 2nd one.
I'm VERY sorry to report that this cable does NOT support USB OTG AND CHARGING AT THE SAME TIME. It is not just your device.
Apparently, there was some miscommunication between me and by business associate in China that lead me to believe that this cable would function this way but it only functions as a USB OTG OR CHARGER CABLE. Language barrier didn't help since I do not speak Chinese and he does not speak English very well. If you read the description, the functionality of this cable is not very clear and obviously written by someone with English as a second language. And also, I can see how the photos can be misleading as well. He went and listed this product on our Amazon account to sell before he even sent me a sample for me to test out and I'm kinda mad at him for doing that.
I was pretty excited at the prospect of it doing OTG and charging at the same time, but now im dismayed that this cable cannot do it. This whole thing was a waste of time to try to bring a product like this to the US that bares little benefit other than being a 2 in 1 cable that can replace a regular USB OTG cable and a Charging cable (albeit a very short charging cable). Sorry that I got your hopes up guys
I do want to clarify exactly what this cable does though: Basically all it does is switch from Charging mode to USB OTG mode depending on how you have it plugged in. If you plug the cable into the mobile device only, the blue light will turn on, letting you know that you can use the USB OTG port. However, once you plug the other end of the cable into a charger, the blue light will turn off, and the cable goes into charging mode. The USB OTG port will not work or light up again until you remove the cable from your charger.
hey there everyone, i'm trying to understand this a bit more. i have the same cable, but my understanding is that it wont work unless the kernel supports it. does anyone know if this is possible to actually fix in the Nexus 9 kernel? i really need this for a project

Ah OK, cause I'm thinking of buying one too, and there's currently a 5% discount
The only thing that bothers me is to Sacrifice the micro USB poort. I don't like that but What can you do.......
So I bit the bullet and bought one and a charging pad. Let's hope they work!
And about the USB port, I thought you'd still be able to use it cause it seemed like it would still allow the cable to go through. Well in any case I only use the port to charge my phone, everything else is done via WiFi
Actually there are 2 questions:
Is it possible to put it under original cover?
Are camera, flash light and speaker OK with this?
ok, the adapter does fit for use inside the phone, although I had to file out the USB port entrance in the back cover. That being said, it won't charge properly due to the layer of foil inside the back cover I presume. It sits now between the phone's back cover an the external silicone cover. Wireless charging is go!
awesome cant wait to try this and build a charger in every table
