I´d like to make this a DIY thread, lets put the things we´ve done to spend a little less in accesories, and for sure someone else will make what you did to LETS HELP US ONE ANOTHER!
So guys I wanted to show you how I made my car mount, it´s a little diffucult but well worth it, I used:
1.- Nokia car mount
2.- USB cable
3.- Car lighter usb charger
4.- Aux cable
5.- A lot of tools lol
Guys I know it looks complicated but once you get the hold of it I promise it´s worth it, I reccomend searching for videos on how to open your cars stereo, I had to watch it about 15 times before even dareing to try, when it opened it, I pushed the Aux cable inside and made a hole on the tray passed it through, the USB charger was the same method, close it and you´re done! Im still looking on how to trigger the DOCK function but until now I´m very happy with it,

it seems like the money spent on a one time accessory is still cheaper than replacing an interior dash piece when you're trying to sell the car (if that happens).
i know for me that spending $80 on a hard wired mount kit from pro-clip is much cheaper than getting replacement panels for my S2000...
kudo's for the work, but i guess it all depends on what car you have to determine if it's worth it to be drilling into your interior panels or not.

I'm assuming he means how do you make the mount. But it looks like you used a pre-made mount.
Thread title is a bit inaccurate.
Here are a couple of pictures of my modified orb and the USB cable goes underneath the dash to a car charger that goes into a female port and the two wires that come out of the female port go to the fuse box and the ground. Now the phone is mounted right in my line of sight and it charges at the same time. I've posted this in a few other threads so I hope I'm not getting redundant with these posts but I'm trying to show everybody how simple this is to do and how you can avoid all of the bulk that those aftermarket accessories will give you when you have to mount them to your dashboard or in your cup holder.

Hey guys, I'm back! If you haven't seen the other thread I made, I was asking if anyone wanted to know how to make their own dock. Since I got a pretty good response I decided to write up a detailed tutorial.

--> Part 2 (implementing the functionality)
--> Part 3 (making it look good)
Back Story
I've wanted to make my own desktop dock for some time now and I finally did! I ran into some troubles with it in the end so sorry for the tardiness, but it's done now .
That's all I have to say for now. Happy hacking!

Part 2 Is Complete!
Hey guys, Part 2 of the tutorial is complete and it can be found here:
DIY Galaxy S Desktop Dock (Part 2)
Enjoy!
Not to be a spoilsport
there's something i don't understand :
1-what about fire
2-what for exactly....I didn't notice an external power connector in wiring diagram, so i assume this is just a nice case for listening music....did i miss something ??
Anyway it seems a good job and you work really clean....my own works before (sometimes even after) the final hand are simply horrible !!!!!!!
Curious to see step 3

Haha, "what about fire." Well, the entire dock is going to be coated in Bondo (automotive filler) so the chance of the outside catching on fire is 0%. The inside however, is going to be left bare, but since it will be a sealed unit, the oxygen supply would quickly run out if a fire were to start.
As for the power supply, there is a DC input on the left side of the diagram. I am thinking of stealing power from the USB hub as well, but I have yet to test if it will supply sufficient power if multiple devices are also plugged in. I am also going to be putting in a battery pack so that it can be used without an external power source.
Part 3 will be coming within the next week or two so stay tuned!

Yes, the USB port on the left side connects both the USB hub in the front, and the phone to the PC.

Well if you've used a non-powered USB hub before you will know that it can't supply enough power to fill up all it's ports with power-drawing devices. I've found that I can have my phone and two USB sticks plugged in at the same time and it works fine. But once the fourth port is filled some of them stop working. It was something I knew would happen from the start, but it's not a tough sacrifice to make.
I also thought about using a powered USB hub, but didn't want any more wires sticking out.

However, this isn't needed, as the SGS outputs (analog) audio via the USB when connected to a car dock (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=980937).
I think this can't be used in your application, because you connect to the PC, but if that isn't required, this could be an option.
Ok so I have a minor problem. I want to make a video out cable for the MT4GS. I have the right tools, and know-how. Anyways whenever I just use a 4 3.5mm male jack (has 4 metal contacts instead of 3, don't know what to call it), and use a rca cable and get it hooked up I can use it and it works fine sometimes. It seems that, when I get it working if I open the T-mobile TV app it shorts it out and stops the video out. And sometimes when I just plug it in to the rca port on the TV it acts like its shorting out. I don't have any shorts in the wire and no wires are touching to create a short. The only thing I can think of is maybe the voltage is going backwards into the headphone jack on the phone. Would adding a diode help with this? Anyone have any ideas or helpful information? Also to add I can get the audio out working from the phone to TV working fine, I just seem to have problems with getting video to work properly. I know I could always go and buy a cable, but I want to make one, because its cheaper.

Ehh, well I don't want to wait for shipping, and in stores here they're like $10+. Anyways it's not like soldering is a burden to me. I just don't understand why it's not working. I mean the 4th contact would be used for both mic input and video output so the only thing that I can think of is voltage is traveling back into it instead of traveling out. But TV cables don't have any diodes or anything like that so I don't understand. And anyways it's not like I have anything better to do when I'm not working.
so i got my new dock and with some modification i am quite happy with the results.
now the big problem i am having is that while the dock will put the skyrocket into charging mode it will not pass the audio trough the docks
has anybody achieved this or knows how to make this work?
when i have it on speaker mode playing music and put it in the dock the music will stop playing via the speakers and actually come out of the headphone jack so i believe that is a software issue and not a hardware issue.
anyways i hope that someone can help me.
thx

Looks like the Infuse 4G mount? It works pretty good if it is. It can be used with a very slim case like the TPU, but it is very tight and the USB connector will not work while in a case. If it is the Infuse mount, it will charge the phone but the Audio will not pass through the USB. It has been discussed many times (you might want to do a search on the subject) but I don't think anyone has been able to get audio through the USB yet (though I think some have tried).

I've gotten audio from my SR into my car stereo through the USB port(not the infuse mount, just a regular usb cable). It's a little tricky and weird, but I figured it out.
For me, I have the pull down menu open, connect my phone, as soon as the option to enable access pops up on the phone, I enable. Takes another 20-30 seconds and then it goes nuts with Nav information.
Then I just folder up using the radio dial and get into the music folder on my SD card (for me it is folder #53) There is no track or artist or album info, but at least it works.
I suspect the two metal connectors embedded into the volume rocker could have something to do with putting the phone into a real "car mode." The Galaxy Nexus has three dots on the side of it so it could be this or just some chrome polish.

So after all this time, no images in the thread? Hmmmmm..
Hello everyone, with this post we can confirm that the Galaxy S4's vehicle "DockMode" works perfect with the xProDock. See image where it was checked today against AT&T's and Sprint's version. Friends from Europe have also confirmed it works fine with the International version.
Driving using the "DockMode" combined with a Bluetooth for hands-free is great as it turns your S4 into a virtual driving assistant and entertainment center, all while you stay away from texting while driving. Keeping the phone above the dashboard obviously also increases both cell phone and GPS reception. Stepping out of the car with a charged phone is another nice benefit with using a charging dock.
Connect the S4 into the xPro and go to "Settings-Accessory" and select "Dock Sound", "Audio out" and "Deskhome display" and then download your favorite "docking app". We've found our own "Dock'n Drive", "CarHome Ultra", "Ulysse Speedometer", "TuneIn" and "Slacker Radio" to be the S4 "Dock home" alternatives. We recommend using one of the first three and then have "shortcuts" to your favorite apps.
The aux-out sound to car-stereo through the microUSB cable also works great on the S4. This means the car-dock only needs ONE cable connected and yet at the other end it splits into a USB male connection and 3.5 mm aux-out that you connect into the vehicle's car-stereo (not needed if you have Bluetooth A2DP support). Keep in mind that Samsung's firmware only allows for "App sound" to be transmitted to the car-speakers through the microUSB, NOT phone calls so you must still use a Bluetooth solution for in-and outgoing calls.
Camera view is also free so you can use the S4 as an excellent "dash cam" with one of the many apps available for capturing video using a "loop". All cases are compatible, even Otterbox Defender or Ballistic Maxx type.
We have also started to ship our new "Stick Anywhere" mount with this which means you can attach it directly to the dashboard's hard surface without using the "disc" used for many years with car-docks. If you don't like the suction Mount concept there's an AMPS plate option which allows you to mount the xPro on a KUDA or ProClip mount for example.
You can order the xProDock for Galaxy S4 on Amazon in the US and Europe. Just type in "xProDock" on eBay and we should have it listed there too in most countries.
Feel free to ask questions or use this thread to discuss any product in the category... We'll comment if warranted. Thanks!
Definitely interested in this if we can't figure out what the hell is going on with the Infuse dock on the Samsung branded car dock thread!

The Infuse Dock can't be used with the Galaxy S4 no matter what. This has to do with the fact that Samsung has changed the pin-out configuration when moving to the "new platform" so there's no technical way (to the best of our knowledge) to get it to charge or to start the car-mode. Not sure if this helps?

Oh it helps alright, between this and your comment on the other thread, I'm going to have to give up on the Infuse dock.... it worked great for the Skyrocket and SIII for me, and I should be glad that I had it for those two phones, but now it's time to move on and go with yours - thanks again for your help with this!
I'll be the first to say that this universal dock has convinced someone who has never even considered a universal dock, this is definitely the one to buy if you need a mount for the S4 while driving.... and who doesn't? Samsung realy dropped the ball on this - all these great features to "make life better with your life companion," and they rip out the ability to dock the damn phone on their own dock? This and the TecTiles? Come on, makes me go crazy over here, but I digress - thanks Mikael, much appreciated, great work!
Placing my order right now!!! But wait til you see how I'm mounting it, going to make it mine if it kills me, haha
EDIT - Amazon order number ends in 0420217, can't wait to get this dock installed, thanks again

Will this work with the s-view cover on and folded back?
Swype'd at pace from my Galaxy S2
Very interesting indeed...
I have a question.. There is a long cable that is attached to the dock and end with the car-charger right? So is that a standard USB port so I can use my own charger or does it come with a car charger itself?
Now the issue with many standard USB car chargers is that they don't charge the phone fast enough. With the GPS on, it actually drains the battery slowly. I am going to get an official Samsung car charger soon.. but will I be able to use with with the xProDock?

Yes, the video they have shows a standard flip cover on the SIII working just fine with it, and other cases all the way up to an Otterbox on a damn Note II will work in this thing!

It does not come with a charging solution, they leave that part up to you, thankfully.... If it were attached to a cheap 1A cigarette lighter adapter, I wouldn't want anything to do with it, but since I can connect this to my 2.1A adapter I already bought and used for months on my SIII, I'm certainly happy with that!

How is the USB connector? Can you get the S4 in and out of the dock and connect the USB with one hand easily?
The USB cord is very stable. It is flexible, but not loose. Similar to the feeling of a goose neck stand. It will stay in the bent shape and position you leave it in. The mount is extremely easy to use, and works with any case. The GS4 goes right into dock mode as soon as it sees the usb plug even if its not connected to power. The cord has a built in plug for the audio as well. The cord has the appearance of being permanently part of the mount, but there is a cover on the back that hides the removable plug. The windshield mount is first rate and did not budge until released.
On a related note....while plugged in, I saw NO battery drain as I had on the Infuse while using map apps, Escort Live radar app, or anything else. The unit continued to charge during all of the above. This in itself is a huge improvement over the previous phone/power combos. I would always have horrible drain even when plugged in when using power hungry apps with BT, GPS, etc...

That has more to do with the charging adapter you're using than the cable itself - what adapter are you using, a 2A or a 1A?

Thanks!
Just wanted to post a helpful tip to anyone using this dock and wants to keep the screen on ONLY when docked, not all the time like the phone settings menu allows you to set "while charging." Always on while charging means that if my screen comes on for any reason while propped up on my desktop charger in the middle of the night, it's on the whole night! This just helps to utilize both Dock Mode that iBolt has figured out how to incorporate into their xProDock and the original Android Car Mode that we probably all know and love from the days of the Infuse 4G car dock!
Here's the link to the steps I used to get this working - it's a little hectic, but should only take about 2 to 5 minutes to set up, depending on what apps you may or may not have already installed
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41206483&postcount=11
I have the original iBolt with the cable and it does not work on the S4. The phone doesn't charge and audio doesn't come out. I have CarHome Ultra installed and using BeyondPod.

Is it the xProDock? They developed this new dock for Samsung specifically to address the issue that all the old ways wouldn't work on the S4. Their product page shows old docks and new docks with the old "In Vehicle Charging Dock" as separate products to identify this. It's an issue with Samsung changing things around and not something iBolt did in order to make you buy a new dock.... hell, Samsung even axed compatibility with their previous dock, making buying the xProDock the ONLY solution available to charge and send the vehicle into dock mode! I fought to get the Infuse 4G dock to work with the S4, but Samsung tinkered around with stuff so much, they caused me to have to buy the xProDock too....
Does any know of one? The only docks I can find are just USB 2.0 out the back of the dock.
Thanks!
If you don't mind spending $$ for a high end dock, this one is adaptable to any type of connection small enough to fit, including USB C:

Man here is for the wish that Google makes their own.
I want a dock that does charging, syncing and audio out! =)

That's the one I'm thinking about buying. I wish Everdock supported USB C. It's easily the best looking one out there.

I'm not sure about that one. The reviews seem to indicate that there is fast charging. But the reviews seem kinda sketchy... like they received the dock to write up reviews.

If you don't mind spending $$ for a high end dock, this one is adaptable to any type of connection small enough to fit, including USB C:

Now THAT looks promising. I love the fact that the cables are interchangeable. Thank you! Now if only they could go back in stock so I can buy two!

You know, the car dock cable is interchangeable.
I'm not 100% sure the desk dock is, now that I think about it.
I only bought the car dock and assumed the desk dock was similar in style.

I didn't know about the car dock! I watched the video for the desk dock. You have to install the cable when you get it so I'm 100% it is interchangeable!
Awesome, good news.
I've replaced the cable in my car dock several times.
One time I had a cable with a huge connector on it.
So I shaved the plastic off the sides of the connector until it fit in the car dock.
Worked great.
I still need to order a USB C cable for my car dock and research what type of 12V to 5V adapter I need to buy that will work for 3.0 quick charging.
I'm guessing my 3A adapter will be fine but I need to verify.
I like to hard wire my charging behind the dash rather than use a cig adapter for charging.

I've got car and desk docks that are useless now because they have USB 1 or 2.
The $70 I spent on the Craigsdock several years ago has more than paid itself back due to the future proofing.
Its adjustability even worked with the stupid Note phone's offset USB port location. :good:
What about this one? Looks perfect, right? https://amzn.com/B01DT1D7CY
