I got the Lollipop 5.1 OTA 2 days ago and installed it - everything went smooth and the phone working fine...
But I noticed that if I reboot my router (or turn it off / on again) the Wifi don't reconnect unless I turn on the screen (the second I turn on the screen the wifi connect normally).
I didn't have this issue with Lollipop 5.0.1
P.S.
I know that this is happening because I have a led on my router telling me if any of my Wifi devices is connected or not. And to make sure I also entered the router settings to see if my phone is connected or not.
Anyone noticed that issue with the new lollipop 5.1 ?

I think that your problem is not switching off the router. The problem is when your phone goes to suspension (screen off) and then it drops the wifi off.

I've got some similar behaviour here, both when updated from 5.0, and with a fresh install from the factory images. When I arrive at a place with known WiFi, the phone only connects once I turned on the screen. After that, it stays connected until I move out of range and back again.
It's probably a matter of responsiveness/battery life. The more it polls for networks, the more battery it uses. It should connect, even with the screen off, within a few minutes.
That being said, I have my wifi set to always stay connected, and I've seen it not connected when I turned the screen on, then connect a couple seconds later. So, there's that. Curious how often it does that.

That's what I suspected. Sometimes, the waiting game works, but I've had my N5 lying on my desk – where it usually gets full WiFi bars – for about 40 minutes the other day, still it did not connect until I turned the screen on.
Edit: Just now, my phone disconnected from WiFi when the screen turned off, which leads me to believe that this is all caused by the WiFi sleep policy. Could it be that Google messed up something there?

My "research" has led me to believe this is the case.
Anything in terms of a workaround?
I came across those settings in the developer options (see screenshot), especially the "Always allow WiFi Roam Scans" looked promising. Been playing with them, but so far no luck.

exactly the same issues as yours guys are happening since I received the OTA 5.1 and installed it !
I Guess something messed up with this new update in regard of the wifi... as you mentioned.

(With almost everyone nowadays having data ..it is difficult to notice such a behavior due to the fast wifi/data switching)
I have seen this happen as well. My battery graph will even show a missing area for WiFi indicating it turned itself on and off twice within a few hours and then stayed on after that.
Google just now released LMY47I, has anyone had a chance to see if that version fixes our problem? Once I'm off work (in about 8 hours), I'll give it a whirl and report back.

Could you please elaborate on that? I'm familiar with Tasker, but I can't think of a way of dealing with this, since I'm not sure what actually happens with the WiFi. The settings appear untouched.

I'm sorry, but my phone is now in the service center , and press that I do not remember specifically . The idea is that when you disable wifi, a time interval is forced to connect to a particular network . Look presence on the internet , here is full of instructions.

Almost all of the changes on these different builds are SIM related for specific carriers.

I think the solution is "use vibrate mode on". Get your device to vibrate mod and test it.

Guys, I have a problem with the Transformer and it's Wifi that is driving me mad!
Regardless if I have wifi running in the background or put in Plane Mode when I turn on the screen after a short interval I notice the wifi has dropped and there is no longer an internet connection.
Not only that I can not get it to start again unless I switch off the TF and reboot.
On investigation on the settings, when I click on Wireless & Networks I notice the right hand pane of Wifi & Wifi settings to be flashing as if it is trying to connect but gets locked out over and over. As such you can not access any of the wireless settings.
I would appreciate any assistance you can shed on this problem.

I believe I have now found what was causing the problem and have explained in detail in Post 10 below.
Basically I found it was after updating to v3.2.1 ~ the WiFi Settings/WiFi Disconnection Policy 'When screen is tuned off' & 'Never when plugged in' was interfering with the state of WiFi, causing it to poll and repeatedly try and switch itself back on, thus a constant flash and inability to activate WiFi..

Sorry... what does that mean?
Searched the internet, and discovered two things, I did both.
1) Removed the maps update.
2) Changed the the channel on my router to 6
Works fine now.
I'm having this same problem for the past few weeks. Whenever the WIFI goes to sleep, I cannot turn it on unless I reboot my Transformer. It's sort of annoying.
It's got to be software orientated that is interfering with the TF.
I can not think of anything other than software causing it to continually 'flash' as it tries over and over again to connect.
I need to look into date captured software updates to see if I can narrow down the culprit.
Looks like I have a long job ahead of me..... sigh!

Mine has nothing to do with Maps and it's doing this continuous polling even when woken from Plane Mode and then trying to switch wifi back on.
I have a theory and am looking at it.... Will report back later.

Yes, I've worked out what the problem for me was and was just coming back to report when I read your post....
Basically for me it is to do with Settings/Wireless & Networks/Wifi Settings/Wifi Disconnection Policy.
After I updated to 3.2.1 I changed the policy from 'Never (uses more battery power)' to 'When screen is tuned off'.
Thinking about it the problem has only been since I changed the policy.
So, I changed it back to 'Never' and the wifi remained on and the problem I was getting disappeared.
I then changed it back to 'When screen is tuned off' and the problem came back.
I then altered it to 'Never when plugged in' with the TF not plugged in and the problem was still there.
Plugging the TF in and the problem disappeared.
Only by changing it back to 'Never' when not plugged in does my wifi remain on ~ which if you think about it is exactly what it is meant to do.
Therefore, for me it would appear changing the policy to turn off the wifi is causing this issue of when you wake the phone up from sleep you can not reactivate the wifi and when looking at the wireless settings the whole of the right hand page of wireless settings are continuously flashing thus not allowing you to access and alter them.
At that point the only way you can reactivate wifi is by doing a power down and reboot.
So guys...... Has anyone else noticed the wifi disconnection policy effecting your wifi from sleep?
Mine stopped reconnecting again last night, the tablet would continuously reboot.
The only solution was to reboot the router.
I will try the keep on and I have turnoff wifi location.

How did you get on with changing the wifi disconnection policy?
Changing the disconnection policy never worked, note sure if this is the best solution, as I recon it will drain the battery.

Interesting.... as it is the only way I can get a stable WiFi that will turn back on from Screen Off.
Even though it says the battery may use more power it doesn't seem all that much different if anything at all... Prior to the latest update I had the policy set to 'When screen is tuned off'.
After the update it defaulted back to 'Never (uses more battery power)' and again after changing it back to 'When screen is tuned off' this is when my problem started.
I am thinking this is something to do with my TF as no one else has reported a problem with WiFi and the 'When screen is tuned off' policy.
I just re-read my post.

Thanks.... This now makes a lot of sense in that it points to a possible bug with the WiFi policies.
This is driving me crazy. I have tried everythinig mentioned, but my TF still goes through the wifi connection loop. Gotta be software related...

Did you try changing the Wifi disconnection policy to 'Never (uses more battery power)'?
That sorted it out for me.
It's since Honeycomb 3.2.1 came in I now find I can not use any other disconnection policy.
This happens to me if I select anything other than "Never (uses more battery power)"
I have found though that if I uninstall the google maps update, and deselect Wifi Localization, that I can have the TF set to "Never when plugged in" or "When screen is turned off".

There was a thread around here somewhere that suggested turning off your mobile data helped fix this problem, I think it was in the N5 General forums.....here it is:

I have a similar problem except that there are phases of wifi not working.
Sometimes I would have around 20-30 seconds of WiFi not working and there would be no data transfer.
Speeds are still fast when it is working however.
I played a little with only using mobile data and no wifi, and everything worked. (Small sample size however).
Seems like this is a WiFi only issue.
So somehow overnight the wifi has managed to fix itself, will report back if the problem returns.
The issue with the wifi returned unfortunately.

Don't know if you've tried this but change your WiFi frequency band in advanced setting to either "5 GHz only" or "2.4 GHz only," whatever your router uses. Might be worth a try.
Thanks for the help, but I've tried changing some settings in advanced wifi settings but it hasn't worked. Even what you recommended I've tried that before and it didn't work.

Also I have the same issue - Im connected to router by wi-fi, home and work and time by time (5x a day) wifi stops working. Wifi is enabled in settings, but there is no connection. Restart the cellphone helps, but after that, maybe an hour, it appears again.
Issue was in 4.4 and still appers in 4.4.1.
Yet did not found how to solve it.

The N5 connects seamlessly to my home and work wifi. A few days ago, I flashed the hammerhead factory image, TWRP and the 4.4.1 update.

I have the same problem with 4.4.2.(factory rom, no root or not unlocked). Sometimes the wifi not works and get orange. I must put airplane mode to fix it. Its annoying.
But as well happens to me:
When I go out from office or home (where I have wifi connections saved in phone) the phone automatically switch to data plan from carrier. But when I come back the phone stays with data and there is not automatic switch to wifi. Sometimes it help to put wifi off or always airplane mode on/off for a while.
I do not know if it is normal behave of android but I would like have automatic switch to wifi.
I tried to change wifi details (changing bands, etc.) but not helped.
Please help. Thank you.

For some unknown reason, as soon as I updated my router's firmware, the problem disappeared.

So I had the unfortunate experience of having my wifi go down while on vacation and for 3 weeks I spent a good chunk of time wiping and reinstalling multiple versions from Cyanogen, Paranoid android and 4.4 - 5.1 to no avail. I just did another factory wipe today and installed the new Android 6.0

Read through 30+ pages of other android users with similar experience and some people send their units back to LG and some even managed getting a new handset. There was never any hardware issues with my unit I just couldn't turn on the WiFi but after the install WiFi works? I have a similar issue. Since Lollipop my phone almost never automatically connects to my WiFi anymore. What's wrong?
I'm not sure if this is a Nexus 5 problem or a 6.0 Marshmallow problem but the problem occurred after the update to 6.0 on both Nexus 5s for me and my wife.
There seems to be some bug with my phone while it is asleep (screen is off but phone is on). When it is in this mode, it will not stay connected to wifi. For example, when I enter an area that has wifi, my phone will not connect. It will only connect when I wake the phone. And this isn't just a matter of the phone taking a while to connect. It NEVER connects. Before the update, my phone used to make a connection with my home router before I even walked inside. Now, I can be inside for hours and the phone never connects, until I wake it up. As soon as I wake the phone, the phone makes the connection with no problem. After a few minutes of the phone being asleep, I will wake the phone and the wifi connection will be gone. Now that it is awake again, it connects again with no problem.
I have tried forgetting the network and creating a new one, I have tried different routers, I have tried wiping the cache partition. I haven't tried a full factory reset, and I'd prefer not to, but I guess I will if I have to.
Just thought I would check here first and see if anyone had other thoughts.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, that is what I thought at first also. I meant to say in my original post that my wifi settings are set to "Always On" during sleep. I've tried toggling that between the settings but still have the trouble.
Sorry, my Nex 5 has not this issue on Android 6 build MRA58K.

Yup, have the same issue. When the phone goes to sleep, it seems to disconnects from the wifi and never connects after I wake the phone. I also know it's not a router issue because I've tried this on four different routers (two linksys, one Dlink, one TPLink) All same results.

No idea when this will be fixed, so I build a Tasker profile to toggle WiFi every 15 minutes when not already connected to force a reconnect. I’ve observed it getting disconnected on its own overnight. This should avoid unnecessarily using cellular data.
I’m perpetually waiting for the next release of Android to fix annoying bugs.

Thanks for the update Gary. The comment #6 describes my situation exactly. In doing some troubleshooting of my own, I find the disconnection trouble to happen less while on a 5Ghz network vs 2.5. I still have the trouble of it not connecting initially when I come into range, but I find that it is able to hold the connection while asleep.
I am also experiencing this on my Nexus 5 and also found and starred the thread above.
I just listened to 20min of streaming with Spotify to then realize that it had gone into Doze and used the mobile data!
This is more than annoying...
Maybe by disabling Doze for some specific connectivity-related system app? Anyone tried that?
Yes, I moved virtually all of the services type of apps (the ones with the green generic Android icon) to the battery not optimized list. It didn't make any difference for me.
In some ways it seems like it might be a Doze problem, and in other ways it doesn't. Doze shouldn't be affecting anything when the phone is in my pocket and I walk in the house to my WiFi. It also shouldn't be affecting anything when the phone is being charged, which is when I see frequent WiFi disconnects.
It will be real disappointing if this isn't fixed with 6.0.1.
This is still an issue with 6.0.1. Nexus 5 (2013) 6.0.1 MMB29K updated through OTA ZIP pushed with ADB.
Things work properly for a while right after a reboot and then WiFi never connects until the screen is turned on.
Google Connectivity Services C.1.6.7 (2466695) update didn’t make a difference either.

Does anyone here have Wemo devices? I am reading that wemos, and possibly other devices that emit their own wireless network, may cause problems. I have several of these devices around the house, and wonder if that might be contributing. However, that only would solve the dropped connection bug I have, not the failing to connect while asleep but I have.

Thats my non optimized Doze list:
-Google Play Services
-System UI
Try it and let me know if it works properly.

I had Google Play Services already set to not optimize, but hadn't tried System UI. I will try that out and see what happens.

Welp, that didn't work. Still have the error after not optimizing System UI in addition to Google Play Services.
I don't know if the issue is resolved, but at least for me, it never worked fine so many days after testing some new workaround.
So, this was what I did in my Nexus 5 (latest build, MOB30H).
Uninstall or deactivate Google Connectivity Services, reset your network settings (you will lose your Wifi networks and BT pairings), reboot.
My Nexus 5 has been connecting to the wifi networks even with the screen off for the last 6 days.

Miguun, has the error returned, or still fixed? I just got the May update, so fingers crossed that fixes it. Otherwise, I guess I'll try your fix. I don't look forward to entering the wifi network information again.

I have rebooted my device, but it didn't help me. My phone is not rooted, it has stock 6.0.1 firmware. How to fix it? Despite it's impossible to use wifi now, it keeps draining my battery.

Boot to recovery and clear caches, reboot and see how it is then
done. Sadly, it didn't help me.
edit: I've just used this app but it also failed. If nothing help me I will wait till Monday to show it to my coleagues from Customer Support. Maybe they will find solution

I'd backup with smart switch, and factory reset the phone
Or flash the latest stock ROM over the top with ODIN

I think it may be related with some strange wifi:

I saw it yesterday at work, but not authenticated. Now it is remembered in list. Sadly S7 has no option to forget networks out of range. Todays we have national holidays, but on Monday I will be at work and try to forget this network. I do not want to change rom because rom from my operator has wifi calling enabled and it is awesome.
Is there any chance that WiFi scanning is turned on? I recently saw that WiFi scanning will briefly turn my WiFi on then off repeatedly (shows with an indicator on top and I hadn't noticed that before). This first showed up when I installed Android Auto since it turned on my WiFi scanning option by default. As soon as I turned WiFi scanning off, the WiFi worked as it had before. It may be worth a look.
I've run into the same issue. Started yesterday, which may have come with the latest PJG update... Not sure.
But it's rendered my phone pretty much useless. The constant toast message popping up, saying "Network connectivity is available" gets in the way of the keyboard and I can't type a damn thing!
Like you, I've found it's stuck with reboots and a factory reset, which makes me think it could be the firmware or modem.
Edit: Disabling WiFi Scanning stopped the errors. Root cause is still unknown, though. I've never had to disable that before...

Yep. It was turned on, but I have it enabled since I bought this phone. Turning off neutralized my problem, but why it was broken for last few days when I haven't done anything with my phone? I rely on this feature because of localization accuracy and disabling it is just temporary fix.

Guys, one more thing:
do you have "Samsung Gear" app installed? I think this app is forcing to enable and disable wifi. Under localization it shows battery usage as high and it was updated last week

My phone does not have the Samsung Gear app installed. I do use Samsung Pay regularly and that was also updated (engine and app). I don't know how that would relate to WiFi though.

Turning off WiFi scanning stops the constant switching of WiFi. I tried removing the system settings permission from all the apps that had it (even the Google app) but it doesn't seem to have any effect.
I am seeing the same issue, I did not touch my screen in the following video

-Settings;
-Backup and Reset
-Reset network settings
I was having constant disconnections from wifi and it solved it.

I am using G930F in US on ATT and encountered the same problem in past few days, where wifi kept turning on and off. Was searching this post, and found out that if i turn off wifi scanning i can get wifi to stay off (when i switched off ) and wifi on (when switched to on) and not flip back and forth.
go to settings.
- click on search
- type in improve accuracy
- select from choice
- turn off wifi scanning
Try that and hope that helps.
I have the same problem. The side effect is that it will drain the battery really fast.
As others have mentioned, after I have turned off the WiFi scanning in the location setting the problem is temporarily gone. However it should not be the solution as I really need the WiFi location to work. I don't know what is causing the bug.
P. S. I only see this problem starting from the last week or so. I leave the WiFi scanning location function on since I have bought the phone in May. Mine is Exynos version.
several Samsung devices have this issue.
I and several others have it on a note 4, and some people have also reported having this problem on S6 variants.
The problem is Google Play Services 10.0.84 version. Another cell phones with this version of Google Play Services have the same problem (ej. Google Pixel phone) but not all.
The problem is the Android Wear App. Deinstall the app and wifi works perfekt.
This issue starts with the last update of the wear app.

I tried uninstalling Android Wear but it didn't make a difference. The wifi kept switching on and off.
As mentioned above, it's Google Play Services 10.0.84. Just disable wifi scanning until there is an update. Hopefully google won't take too long to push a fix.

I did a lot of googling and searching through XDA, but never found a solution for my problem, so I might as well try it here.
Recently I updated my Sony Xperia X Compact to AOSP 10. Now when I am connected to wifi (and it does NOT matter whether it is 2.4/5GHz or IPv4/IPv6, I tried everything) and my screen is locked, my system seems to put the wifi connection into some kind of battery saving mode. Notifications then will hardly come through. You can also see this in WhatsApp Web - every two minutes or so, "Phone not connected" will show up, and messages take up to 2 or 3 mins to get delivered. Then I can use Whatsapp Web normally for 30 secs, after which my phone seems to disconnect again. If I unlock my screen, WhatsApp Web will immediately (!) start working normally again, also missing notifications (e.g. Signal) will then come through.
While of course this might be a ROM bug, I am at least 100% sure it IS ROM-related, as I used exactly the same phone with exactly the same router without any problems while on Android 9 LineageOS.
Another interesting thing - if I charge my phone, during charging WhatsApp Web works completely without problems. The moment i UNPLUG the phone, wifi gets somewhat throttled agian.
Does anybody know a working solution for this? I do not have the option "Disable wifi sleep" or something similar - i believe Google has dropped this option somewhere around Pie.

AFAIK there are kind of wifi energy saving options on some devices. But IDK if you can enable or disable wifi when phone is locked
