TIMMY E86 - 5.5" HD 1GB RAM 1.3gHz Quadcore - cheapest best chinese smartphone? - Android General

Hello,
I have recently ordered 2x TIMMY E86 . I have read only positive reviews on couple sites. I bought in November last year for my mother a Axgio WING W2 which has similar specs for 85$ and it has been working ever since perfectly. She plays daily her Candy crush-like games and has no problems. Battery lasts a day which is fine.
I got an email with this offer for TIMMY E86 and I checked it out. Generally, I don't even look at a phone/tablet unless it has at least HD screen. This has one, an IPS HD and it is a 5.5" screen. That is amazing. I pay more for less. The price is 74.99$ from Everbuying after using TME86 coupon and 500 EB points which I believe I received them free when I made my account. Beautiful, right? The internals are pretty much like WING's: Android 4.4, MTK6582 1.3gHz Quadcore Cortex A7, Mali400 GPU,1GB RAM, 16GB Internal memory(!!!), the camera is 5MP but after reading reviews it performs quite good, excellent Wi-Fi signal and sound, good phone signal. ~17500 AnTuTu score
This phone is sold everywhere and the price is around 90$ I think. I can't believe how it can be so cheap and deliver so much. If you are looking to buy it don't miss the limited offer from Everbuying. I don't know where you find any cheaper.

I made this thread for potential buyers, owners and further owners (like me) for troubleshooting, questions, tweaks etc.

I ordered 2 of these actually myself and they really are nice phones for the price. I had no problems using it in the US with cricket although I had to make sure to set up the apn. I get HSPA+ speeds I believe too, although lte would be nice. It's really easy to root it too, I used iroot without a hitch. Be careful if you have it in your pocket with something else. I had a pencil in mine that left a weird rainbow pressure mark in the middle of the screen, but it's only visible at certain angles.
The speakers definitely sound a bit tinny though and I believe mine is actually 8gb. One gripe about the storage though is that there's 1gb for the system/main apps and there's the phone storage (not sure if this is 2 different things of memory or just the way it's partitioned) which causes the play store to claim it's out of space. However this isn't a big deal with the phone storage and sd card slot. The last part is the battery doesn't last too long and I wish it was easier to upgrade. I'm thinking of trying to find a similar phone with a higher mah battery at the same voltage, but I'll see how that pans out. That said this phone is awesome at around $80, I would definitely suggest it. Oh and if the price isn't too different on shipping, make sure to use DHL global express. I used it and it got to me in like 3 business days from China.

It's takes okay pictures although the flash isn't too good. I'll see if I can post some pictures later (might be a while if I can). The gps works perfectly as well, actually better then my old phone (alctatel fierce 2).

Gyro and ROM
Hi, can you confirm it has gyroscope of 3 axis (simply, install any app for google cardboard and check if the camera moves as you turn the phone in any direction) also, do you know if there is any rom of lollipop for it or if timmy is gonna upgrade it?

Hi I have a timmy m7 amd bought a memory sd card. How do you transfer data as you can't do this in apps or setting or storage. Plz help.

Hi, I know some people will not like this post, especially if their Timmy is working fine... but I have the Timmy E86 and its really bad, the battery lasts 2 seconds, the phone heats up too quickly (as in you put it on charge and two seconds later if boiling hot), it wont let me access any of the apps I downloaded except for facebook and facebook messanger, which at first I thought the apps were just being updated so I borrowed my partners phone as he has the same apps as me (but on an IPhone 4S) and they were working so I thought I would download them again and see if they work but after I uninstalled them I found out that I had no access to the play store even though I was on the Wifi (I live in Britian btw and I'm on Tesco Mobile) if you are considering this phone please way out all your options, there might be a better phone (personally for myself I love my Samsung Galaxy S7 but unfortunately that's had to go in for repairs due to me falling down the stairs and smashing the back on my phone and bending the left side of it, but surprisingly the front was fine xD)

[Q] Vodafone stock issues/Should i buy

Hello all,
Been looking at this phone for a while, want an upgrade my desire as
it just lags bit much more then i like and battery not as good.
My question is:
What is the vodafone stock levels like? Where is the best place to buy i.e. shop , online , phones 4 u.
Ive been looking forums and seen people saying online have been having stock issues , so was just curious?
On a side note , has anyone upgrade from desire/similar and can
say its worth the upgrade? I worked out it only going to cost me around £100 to
upgrade which I'm happy to pay - but is it worth it? (After i sell the phone and cancel my current contract etc..)
Also , how much internal memory has the desire got left to use on first boot?
Not seen a deffinate answer yet? I've heard around 1gb?
Any plus/minus is worth knowing to help my decide?
Thanks
I've heard it's a great phone, with few issues.
But I've heard from some Desire users and DHD users that it's not much of an upgrade, in that you could pass it off as a "Desire-PRO." The feel will be pretty much the same, just with a better camera and touch screen buttons at the bottom. I've also heard that Sense 3 is not that much of a big step up. (the homescreen has a different animation, though)
In my opinion, from a Desire, the only thing your really upgrading to is the new lock screen, speed improvements and more storage.
(There's more RAM, but you get left with 197MB actually available for apps to actually use. On my Desire, I get 155MB left available for apps)
Of course if you a HTC fan, and that's what your looking for, then by all means it's a great phone, after all the Desire was pretty amazing.
If you fancy a change, you could look at the Atrix or GSII (or one of the optimus phones)
Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but I don't actually have a Sensation, but have been intensively reading the forums for the last month or so. (I'm in the process of deciding what to upgrade as well)
If the QHD screen is not the killer feature for you, you can quite easily run Sense 3.0 on the DHD, as many people are doing already.

I agree. qHD is a "failed" technology. It's pretty damn good, but it's an "inbetween technology." It'll be around for 4-6 months and then we're going to have ultra-high-resolutions in the market, which will simply triumph all other displays.

Thanks for that useful stuff!
im seriously thinking now. I think i would love the bigger screen size and quality ,
im agains the samsung simple for the feel of it, i hate the galaxy s , as i class the feel of the phone as one of the most important (as doesnt matter how good a phone is, if you hate the feel in your hand then not very good)
Im confused about the quote, you mention ram at the start then say only
197mb free for apps,
do you mean there only 197mb internal memory spare for apps?
If thats true that is a big minus!

No, by 197mb RAM i mean that, that's all you have for apps to use - RAM is not storage. RAM is Random Access Memory. Basically the more RAM available, the more things the phone will be able to do WITHOUT lagging up and getting slow.
In the beginning i was referring to 1GB of space of internal storage to store all of your apps.
Cheers for that -
Heard any issue with stock? ideally i want to walk into a shop on Friday and pick one up, might ring first just in case
Hi Phil,
I got mine yesterday from Phones4U, they had no stock problems as far as I know.
It has around 600Mb+ free for app installations (plus the 8Gb SD card of course). As previously mentioned, there is about 200Mb RAM free on boot too.
Only lag I've had today has been when updating the Vodafone settings (data plan stuff) which needed a reboot, but I'm guessing it was just a glitch with one of the apps using the connection at the time, as otherwise, its been as fluid as a, erm, fluid thing.
Battery: pretty much constant web, market and facebook chat usage on 3G, plus a few 3 or so minute calls = down to 12% battery by about 2pm (unplugged 7am)
rp-x1 - Does your Phones4U Sensation have Vodafone branding or is it running Generic Europe firmware?

Thanks useful stuff coming from someone who brought it !
And yer the screen and speed are my biggest wants . 600 mb is plenty so that sorted that problem!
Im edging towards it closer and closer! Specially as my desire battery seems to be dieing , i was one first to get one before the release date so had it 15 odd months and battery life getting worse and worse.
Also thinking of upgrade from Desire to Sensation but worried about losing the optical joystick (or whatever it is called). I seem to use it a lot for close up fiddly movements of the cursor. Does new software cope without it? Do any new phones still have the hardware?

I was worried the same untill i played with my boss's desire s (without the trackpad)
HTC/android has some new little arrow buttons you can use to be more accurate which is why the trackpad has been removed on all new phones.
Takes a while to get used to it but it made me happy not getting a trackpad

Hi, it has Vodafone branding, but can only see the Vodafone logo on boot and a 360 app in the list. Otherwise it 'looks' largely untouched

Is this a good phone to buy?

Long story short, I hard bricked my Evo 3D because I flashed the boot image to the wrong partition by not properly editing the updater-script when trying to port Jellybean (very developer NOOB move even though I'm not one by a long shot). So I'm thinking about buying one on Amazon to tie me over until my upgrade next year, because right now, my parents' only option (until I get the money) is to let me use a Blackberry, its torture (-_-)... I've read up on this and I am thoroughly impressed with the specs given it was released in 2010, plus it has ICS Officially. So I just have a handful of questions!
1. How is the Developer scene here? Is it still very active?
2. How good are the 3G speeds on this (I'm not getting 4G)
3. How is battery life
4. Is the phone easily breakable (this determines if I buy a case or not upon my ordering)
5. Can I still have me an awesome gaming experience? I am the Asphalt 6 and Shadowgun type of guy, so gaming is a must.
6. How quickly can someone fill up that 512MB space? and has someone made script that moves the WHOLE app to an external SD or repartitioned the space to give 1GB space?
I'll be sure to add more questions should they come up...
Now I have read that this has no SD card slot, and this would have been a problem. But as of recently, I have become a cloud kid. My Music is on Google Play Music, I have a couple of Movies and TV Shows on my SD Card but I can put those on my box cloud storage, that means that I can use all 16 GB for Game caches and the few movies and shows I frequently watch.
I just want to know your opinion, and the pros and cons of the phone, alongside the questions I asked. Thanks in advance!
Developer scene is still pretty solid. Expect an additional boost in a few weeks when Jelly Bean arrives. 3G speeds and reception should be decent so long as you have a decent provider, it is more dependent on them than on the phone. Battery life is mediocre, though you can pull off 4 hours of screen time a day with a little bit of effort (and compromise). It is generally a pretty stubborn phone. It won't break straight off the bat, but being plastic it will tend to scratch easily from rough surfaces. The screen can take a fair bit of abuse so don't be scared about the lack of "gorilla glass" branding, plus it's curved which is both great to touch and means it's less prone to scratched glass. I've found a case to be good due to the phone being slippery, but have since decided to use it without one. If you intend to root the phone i'm sure the gaming experience will be a good one, and likely even more so with jellybean - though there are certain games that won't even install (some tegra and tablet based games i think, i don't game that much on the phone so don't take my word on this).
As for storage, you have 16GB in the phone classified as "sdcard". It is built in and non-replaceable, with no external sdcard slot. It is partitioned primarily into /system, /data and /sdcard. /system holds the android operating system and is plenty big enough even for development purposes. /data is approximately 1GB and holds the data for apps only, so you have 1GB worth of apps which you can keep installed on the phone. The /sdcard partition is around 15GB and formatted as FAT32, so you can throw all of your music, photos, videos and sd2ext (built in, not a seperate app) apps here, so any larger games would be thrown onto the sdcard if you choose so, generally giving plenty of room. The only drawback for me, personally, is the lack of room for music - but you seem to have yourself sorted there.
And as i said above, if you really want to get every benefit from this phone it should be unlocked and rooted. It loves being free. Otherwise it's just a Galaxy S.

And my decision was solidified with the acquisition of jellybean. I can get a gnex experience for the most part without having to shell out so much money. I just need a gaming device (I'm going to buy chainfire for the coupe of tegra games I want) and an entertainment hub. I will buy a case asap, probably a ballistic case, an some other stuff, thank you so much

One more thing to point out though, if you end up getting the 4G version (the only CDMA version, which i think is what Sprint uses) it may take longer to get JB and I can't comment on CDMA networks 3G. It will be approximately on par with most other phones running on the same network, though.

The Nexus range is the first to get the Jelly Bean update, so it's certain that Google is paying extra attention to it.
As a friend of mine (also owning a Nexus S) pointed out, the development activity is one of the best out there.
In terms of performance, I was happy with it in 99% of time, you can't pretend the same performance as a quad core phone but overclocking the phone at a safe 1200mhz makes it significantly faster.
All in all, it is a very good phone for the price you pay.
Good luck and let us know if you decided getting the phone.

I am aware of Sprint and their inability to push updates properly, so it's expected. I will be rooted and running a slim ICS Rom anyway
, so I can just install JB after they get the update it in rooted Rom style.

I got a little excited yesterday and decided to do research on some other phones that could be possible contenders, but this phone takes home the crown. My parents said that because I broke the phone, I cover the expenses. So I did the math.
If I get a galaxy nexus now:
I have to buy out my contract ($100), and then buy the phone ($150) = $250
If I buy a galaxy S III now:
I have to buy out the contract (same) and buy the phone ($200) = $300
if I buy this phone:
But it from Amazon ($150) and transfer my number (free) = $150
The numbers say it all. I will get this phone . Plus, I want a nexus 7, so I need to save as much money as I can. I will wait until next year to get my upgrade to the gnex

[Q] Anyone has Gooapple V5+ ??

Hi I am interested in buying this phone but i haven't found any reviews of it around exept from a video from android-sale. Does anyone have this phone? Anyone tested yet? thank you!
Mine arrived yesterday from Android Sales.
First disclaimer - it doesn't come with Android 4 as advertised. Only Android 2.3.6 is installed, so I am currently pissed. Trying to contact them. I don't feel like wasting time learning how to root and install custom roms...
The tech specs seem legit - there is a 1Ghz MT6575 chip in there, retina display, etc. The camera seems good to me. The retina display is slightly faulty - it has a light shimmer on the edge, upper half only. Nothing I actually notice unless I have a black screen.
This is my first android, so I am probably not much help with anything else. It crashed on me a couple of times... nothing major, though. Had trouble with the connection, though it imrpoved when using a different SIM. Probably a combination of not so good antenna, crappy wifi and crappier carrier.
well, it supposed to have android 4, so there is a good chance they send you another phone. (perhaps goophone y5). You should contact them immediately. good luck with this!

Hello,
I have got mine couple of days back from android-sale.com (took 25 days-india). The phone looks fantastic and feels solid. Following are the few spec details:
1) Retina screen (same as iphone 4)
2) Antenna similar to iphone 4 (not 4S)
3) 8MP camera and works like charm
4) CPU MTK 6575 1GHz- Smooth UI performance
5) No chinese app. Comes pre-installed with android google play, youtube, google maps, yahoo weather app- all in english
6) Superb software- very stable and identical to iOS.
7) very good wifi and network reception.
This phone is a good value for money. However, there are certain problems
1) Batter performance is poor.
2) Very small amount of internal space left (~ 15MB). You can't install many apps. After installing couple of apps device memory goes full.
3) Due to the space crunch heavy apps like facebook, skype etc. eventally shut down.
4) Boot up screen show android logo instead of apple (not a big issue)
All in all the phone built quality is great and considering the price its among the best iphone 4 clone available in the market.
Hope this will help you. If you have any question you can ask without any hesitation.

Hello I'm very interested in the phone and what you said about the pros and cons. Do you solve some of the cons like the small intern memory or the Android boot logo our the ending of some bigger Apps? Do you think the internal memory would be better on a Goophone y5 our a thunderbird 4s? I want to have a iPhone 4 clone as second phone but I want to have the most important Apps on out too. My first phone is an original galaxy s2 and apart of the multiple crush boots its a good one but the design of the ip4 is awesome and I want it to have Android. So maybe you can help me about my decision. Greetings Chris

Do you think the internal memory would be better on a Goophone y5 or a thunderbird 4s? I want to have a iPhone 4 clone as second phone but I want to have the most important Apps on it too. My first phone is an original galaxy s2 and apart of the multiple crush boots its a good one but the design of the ip4 is awesome and I want it to have Android. So maybe you can help me about my decision. Greetings Chris
Hi Could you please tell me which colour do you have and if its white what does the home button look like is it white or looking a bit transparent?
Greetings Chris!

Hello man do you own a white or a black one? What do you think is it possible to use it all day long? What about the battery and are there China Apps on it? What about play store, you tube ...are the real ones on it?
Greetings Chris!

I've got the GooApple V5+ too from android-sale.com but since 12 december and it's working pretty well for me. I've done some research on it and found some cool things and some things that rafkhan can be fixed.
1. The bootlogo is apple for me but sometimes it changes to Android for an unknown reason.
2. The battery works pretty good for me, it just depends what you have running on the background. I can use it for 1 day and a half maybe? But I usually just use it normal, then play a game for like 30 mins and at night I always recharge it.
3. The low internal issue can be fixed. I changed mine to 2.15 gb check my Signature for that.
4. The phone can be rooted so thats not a problem either.
5. I placed my GooApple V5+ next to a friends / brothers iphone 4s and each time, they think mine is the real one , untill I show the back which shows GooApple haha.
So yeah , I'm pretty much content with this phone.
I'm also trying a lot of stuff like when you go into USB Storage Mode, it shows the android logo, I wanna change this to the iphone kind.
If I do anything nicely, I'll add it to my Signature.
The only cons I have is:
The back shows GooApple -> Can be fixed by buying a real back cover.
The phone doesn't have Dutch (Language in Belgium / Netherlands) -> English ain't a big problem personally
The USB Storage Mode is like Android -> Changing that soon !
I'm even ordering a new one for a friend of mine cause he was pretty jealous

Hello man I'm very thankful for your fast response. As I can read the Gooapple therms to be one of the best clones and with little work it can become even better. Is yours a white or black one I'd its the white one what does the home button look like is it real white like pin the Android Sale video our is it greyish like the other ones was the original google play installed and functional and is there a possibility to get a original looking gallery. What's about the performance and the velocity of the cam and the look of the photos. Thanks for answering.
Greetings Chris!
Hey Chris, I asked some person which was the best iphone 4s replica atm and he responded with the GooApple V5+ so I bought it and still don't regret it !
I do regret that I haven't bought the 32gb but I recently bought me a Kingston 32gb SD Card (class 10) so that has been solved for me too.
Mine is black but you have to know that you can change everything, yup everything of the phone ! The original iphone 4/4s things (cases, covers, usb charchers etc.. can be used on this phone as it's such a good replica. So even if it is grey, you can buy yourself a real iphone 4s white button and put it in there yourself but I don't know how to remove the cover, as I haven't tried yet
It will most likely be a lot like how you remove the cover on the real iphone.
I think it is the original Google Play yeah and it works pretty good ! Have found everything I needed.
About the original looking gallery, there is someone who made it (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1880314&page=24) but you have to look around to find the link.
The photos are very good itself when it's light enough. But I did compare the real iphone 4s with the GooApple V5+ and the iphone 4s is a bit smoother then the gooapple when moving around but who the hell takes pictures while moving right ..
If you have more questions , shoot !

Man thanks a lot you´re the biggest help for me.:good:
Could you please tell me if there are two different kinds of design for the gooapple v5+, one like the ip4 and one like the ip4s?
Because on the original gooapple homepage it looks like you can choose between those two design options.
It isn´t that important for me but if I could choose between the two I would choose the ip4 design. The reason is that the gooapple v5+ has a mtk 6575 with 1,0 Ghz and no Siri so its comparable with the ip4. And the ip4s has double the processor speed and siri. So if someone realizes that I have an ip4s and the one is interested in the phone he would like to have an example how good siri works and I can´t show him. So if it would like an ip4 he wouldn´t ask. Sorry for the stupidity as I said it´s no reason to buy another phone just a thought.
Do you think if you buy the one with the 8gb memory and you change it with a 32gb sd card you can also manage to get 2.15gb of rom like you have it?
I want to buy the white one with the smallest memory because external SD cards are less expensive in the moment but I´m not sure now.
Many Greetings!
I don't know what to compare the V5+ to the most, 4 or 4S.. My brother has a 4S though but I'm liking the one I have so I don't bother too much at comparing xd
But people have told me that the antenna is more like the 4 so I think its actually more based on the 4 (GooApple V5+).
There is something similar to Siri for Android like Andi and Skyvi.
And yeah I think it's better if you get the 8gb one and later buy a 32gb (high class for ex class 10) as I think the standard 32gb they give won't be as good as the one you can buy yourself for almost the same price.
+ If I were you, I wouldn't choose the original iphone back cover if I were you. You can buy it later & cheaper with other things like an original iphone recharcher or a car recharcher or something.
As I noticed my USB recharche cable got damaged pretty fast. I can't get into USB Storage mode anymore with it but it still recharches, so I use that one for recharching at night or in my car.

Hello chris,
Sorry for the late response. In my opinion and whatever research I've done I find goophone Y5 is a better iphone 4S clone (see mayiandjay reviews on youtube). It has the best community support, custom roms and root options. You can tweak the memory storage on goophone Y5. However, Gooapple is cheaper and its factory software is more stable. Im working on the memory part. I have a black version and it is gorgeous and flawless. I cant tell about the white version.

Hello thanks for your response. Another member can give you advise for the memory problem. I don't think that the Goophone is the better phone because without rooting you will have a bunch of Chinese Apps and no functional google play store. The backcover is made of plastic and the display is not the original iPhone one. I think and I hope that if enough people have the Gooapple v5 + the support will get better.
Greetings Chris!

I have to agree with you , the gooapple V5+ is pretty new and its from china so it's pretty hard to get support right now..
But as you read before, it's already rooted, the internal memory can already be increased, soon I'll have another gooapple V5+ of a friend and I might upload the stock rom that comes with it.
So yeah just give it a bit more time and the gooapple V5+ will be pretty known.
& Currently on china-iphone.ru and gooapple forum you can get the most support but it's really hard as it took me 2-3 weeks to find out how to root it. And it's just a couple seconds method x)
I did find another issue I have which could be a lack of knowledge. I can't seem to get the GPS working properly x) as I want to use it offline as a real GPS.
As I told Boyka I ordered mine on the 15th of February after Android Sales holidays. Anything seems to work normal but after I asked for a tracking number they where telling me that its no more in stock by now. I asked for the t.n.after 5 days because I paid 30$ for expedited shipping and it should last 6 to 10 days in complete. So if I haven't had asked I wouldn't knew till now. I would anyone to know that the white one with 8 GB must be out of stock in the moment they will tell me when its back in stock and they send me mine.
So to all wait a few said before you order it.
Greetings to ya from chrisrock

best practices for flashing this rom: give thanks to: @cragains (post #666)
please do a back up in twrp no matter what. Since there isn't a 100% stock rom that has wifi calling working. If you don't do a back up and want to have a 100% stock rom again you'll have to to flash the firmware to do so.
1.Factory reset (you dont have to but I always do)
2.Put in Download Mode
3.Flash ANK3 firmware via Odin
4.DL Mode again
5.Flash Root via Odin
6.DL Mode once more
7.Flash TWRP via Odin
8.Boot into TWRP factory reset (no need to wipe internal storage)
12/13/2014 UPDATE: We have a TWRP recovery!! follow this link: http://androidforums.com/threads/twrp-2-8-1-0-afyonltetmo.887861/ and please thank shabbypenguin.
10/28 UPDATE: We have Root !!!
Please if you just joined the thread be polite and read through the pages before asking questions that have been asked and answered several times in the thread, this is good forum manners.
Instructions:
1. Go to website: autoroot.chainfire.eu
2. Download package for SM-G386T (donate to be a community member)
3. Unzip it.
4. Open Odin3-v.07 on computer
5. Turn off phone.
6. Hold Down Vol, Home, and Power, simultaneously.
7. Press Up Vol to accept
8. Connect phone to computer via USB
9. Confirm that the message in Odin says "Added"
10. Check box for PDA and click on PDA, to select the file "CF-Auto-Root...." that is in the unzipped folder
11. Click Start
12. It'll restart the phone on its own. Odin should say "Pass!" on the upper left.
13. When phone on, download Root Check and run it to confirm that its been rooted.
Thank you all for keeping the thread going and being perseverant at getting a root solution, a custom recovery and a custom Rom. I will keep an eye on the thread and put updates here on the begining to make it easier for everyone. :good::good:

I got the galaxy Avant two days ago from Tmobile. So far I am very happy and impressed, I compared the screen with the S5 side by side, the Z1s, the HTC one M8, the I phone 5s and the LG G2 and I must say that for not being HD it is impressive. at full brightness both the s5 and the Avant with the exact same web page open both screens displayed the exact same content even though the Avant fonts were a bit smaller, however the background white was whiter on the Avant and a bit more yellowish on the S5, then all other phones I compared had whiter whites in the background but the content was very different some showing more and some showing less content ( I can recall which is which.. sorry).
Please share your reviews on the new phone, I think it has impressive specs for a mid range at such a low price. I got mine from T carrier at only $120 with their summer special. With 1.5 Ram, 1.2 quad-core snapdragon 400, 16 GB internal memory plus external micro Sd for up to 64 additional Gb, kit kat 4.4.2 right off the bat plus an unlock app,and full 4G LTE capability this phone has potential for some major development. the camera even only a 5 megapixel takes very decent photos and has nice features like panoramic, shot and sound, sport mode, and a couple more..
By the way... Does anyone know how to root the new Galaxy Avant?
So.. let's talk about this phone and see how good it is and how much better it can become. Thanks.

It's not user error.. it's not willing to be patient.. or just ****ty programming.. "whathaveyou?"
Anyway since my phone came back from the "no phone calls" dead.. I'll just wait it out... or play with the settings until it's fixed..
i just checked.. I still can't dial out.. so now I'm gonna play with wcdma/gsm.. because it did seem to start working after I did that...

Total user error just call them and tell them you were playing with network setting because you have no clue what you're doing and they will walk you through it to fix it. Easy is that. You're phone isn't bricked because you messed with network settings

I picked one up for my daughter without much thought. I can't imagine buying a phone that doesn't have expandable storage or replacabe battery. She's really happy with it, coming from a hand-me-down iPhone 4and has already had fun laughing at small iPhone screens with me.
It's got a good enough proc and memory to run touchwiz I guess, but I'd LOVE to run some AOSP on the for her so she can see what android is really about.
So far I'm excited and happy I bought her this phone and would love to see it get some attention on xda.
Just ordered a few mins ago, I'm on tmo prepaid so no discount.. How ever ordered it threw best buy for 200 and tax, compared to prepaid site which is 256 not including tax.., I'm coming from a lg optimus l9 (which I'm gonna sell and recoup some of the cost)

I don't have this phone, but I am interested in it. If we can get a small developer community around this, that would be even better... at least get us root (I wonder if it's too new/been patched for TowelRoot to work?)
I posted a request for a forum to be created here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54777893&postcount=15177
I ordered one today and I'm also interested in a developer community around this device.
I'm a Linux user/coder myself, but still a little behind the curve on Android. I'll certainly be trying the known root hacks for similar Samsung devices as soon as I get mine.
So glad this phone is finally getting some attention. I switched from my galaxy s2 skyrocket to this one. Although it runs touchwiz its pretty stable with rare hiccups. Its a speedy slick phone. The only drawbacks so far for me have been the camera, 5mp is too low for a new phone. Skyrocket had 8mp. And the screen. Coming from a super amoled to this one the colors are kinda washed out and the white looks kind of blueish. Aside from that root on this phone will get rid of all the bloat and samsung crap and speed it up nicely. So far so good. Must note that this phone is lacking some pretty basic stuff like auto brightness, a dedicated button to turn off data on notification bar, multi window support, the volume is low. On the other hand the minimized call screen widget that appears when pressing home button during a call is a jice addition, along with the ability to quick reply messages similar to how AOSP does it. Hope we get root soon!

I did the same. I bought it for my son he loves it i had bought the Galaxy Light for him unfortunately 4gb of internal storage is not enough. The problem he had was even with an external 32gb not all the apps can be moved but with the Galaxy Avant has enought space and is big enough for him to enjoy so he is happy so am i. btw you can install the Google launcher from the store makes it alittle better with Google now everywhere.

I am also a big fan of the Galaxy S2 from T mobile, awesome custom Roms I have enjoyed that phone until the sim card reader gave up, but I felt it needed a bit more Ram...
About the camera on the Avant, we cannot expect a top end camera in a super budget phone that already has other great specs and quite honestly, after I took a few pics with the camera already and I have nothing to complain; sure not as great as the higher end phones but the pics I took today at a restaurant of my girlfriend with the beauty face mode came out perfect!! I got tons of likes in Facebook.
The screen... it is not as bright and over exposed as the AMOLED ones but... I put it side by side with the galaxy S5 at T-mobile store, opened the exact same web page.. and it blew my mind the fact that the background on this phone's screen had a nicer white/ blue tone rather than the yellowish tone of the S5 and there was a difference in detail but not that huge...
Today I have been all day under the sun in Houston and I was amazed that I had no problem seeing the screen when set at almost full brightness and... the battery... after 22 hours with still 34% left... not bad at all.
So... back to the topic, for me this is like a Galaxy S2 minus camera and screen but with more Ram (1.5 Gb) and more processor Power (quadcore 400 snapdragon 1.2 Ghz), 16 Gb internal memory and up to 64 gb with micro SD, Kit Kat 4.4.2, great size for one hand use, super light; once they get some great roms for this phone optimizing battery, processor and Ram, this phone will be a beast and at the best price in the market!! $216 dollars it is a steal. So this should be candy for the developers to create all kinds of awesome Roms.
I don't think you can expect more for the money... the perfect back up phone if you have a higher end phone as well... Let's hope more people get excited about The Avant...
I just got mine for $120 in the summer special as well. I almost got the LG L90 for $48!!! but its screen has poor viewing angles though it can be rooted now. The Avant is mostly equal to the L90 except a slight smaller screen(4.5 vs 4.7) but the same resolution and the Avant has more memory, internal storage and not only supports LTE but it appears the new 700Mhz LTE spectrum which means even more coverage than most other T-Mobile phones.
I only tested it out in store but plan to open it up tonight and give it a go...
I too want to see this thing at least rooted in the near future.
Anyone unlocked this phone yet without using the unlock app?
I'm looking to buy those phone for my 13 year old brother .. He currently has an iphone 5c but wants an android phone when I switch him to tmobile
anybody try towl root?, what happened if ya did?, I would try but my phone is about to die and im trying to charge it right lol, also anyone know what the software update includes.. Im not gonna apply it till I know
If you are still paying for the phone via extended payments t he only option to unlock is temporary. I believe once you paid off t he phone you may have permanent unlocking.
Towelroot V3: " This device isn't currently supported"
PS. Even then phone is payed off, only temporary unlock is possible (30 days) ?

dang.. go figure, might be able to reconfigure it though... ill have to look into it..
The Avant is the replacement for the Galaxy Light T399. I got the Light shortly after switching to T-Mobile from Verizon and needed something cheap but decent to tide me over until I could get a "real" phone (which, at that time, was going to be a OnePlus One, but not anymore). My feelings on the Light are very mixed. In some ways it performs very well. I get a screaming LTE signal at home (not as good at work, but far better than I did with VZW). I like the small size in the pocket but hate the small screen when using it. It does well on benchmarks, but in real use feels like it's just a bit underpowered, and has some severe lag at times.
The Avant seems to address most ofl the qualms I have with the Light. Bigger screen (but not a huge phone), more internal storage, FM radio. I always felt like the Light could use just a wee bit more RAM to run TouchWiz, and the Avant has that extra RAM. Almost everything about the Avant makes me wish it was available in March when I switched. Then again, I only paid $120 for my Light.
The rear camera on these 2 phones is the same, and I think the 5mp camera takes pretty decent pictures for what it is. Up close it takes great pictures. But farther away, it sufferers simply because of the lack of pixels. Perfectly useable for pics of friends or things to upload to Facebook, but obviously not great for scenic vistas or stuff in the distance. The 2mp front facing camera is obviously an upgrade over the .3mp of the Light, but I never cared about the FF camera.
I do find it curious that it not only supports T-Mobile's band 4 (which AT&T also uses), but also AT&T's bands 1, 2, and 5. Probably the same reason they released that unlocker app, but what that reason actually is, I have no idea.
Although I'm not in the market for this phone (I have a Nexus 4 now), I'm still very interested in it, at the least for recommending to others. On a payment plan, it's the best budget choice phone T-Mobile has. The Galaxy Light and the LG L90 can be had for $100 right now. The Light has LTE, but it's dinky. The L90 is bigger, but limited to HSPA+ 21.1Mb/s speeds. There's the Alcatel Onetouch Fierce, but you don't want that POS. Above that, you're looking at flagships or refurbs for a few hundred bucks more. The only thing in between that's new is the Avant or the Lumia 521 or 635, but who the hell wants a Windows Phone?
Off contract, the obvious alternate choices are the Moto G LTE from wherever or a Nexus 4 off eBay. The Nexus 4 is without a doubt the best spec'd hardware-wise, especially if you're willing to hack it for LTE and play around with custom ROMs and kernels, and can live with 8/16gb storage. Between the Avant and the Moto G LTE, it's a complete toss-up for me. The Moto G has the better screen, but the Avant has a removable battery. I don't consider the extra .5gb RAM an advantage for the Avant since TouchWiz needs it to compete with the minimal needs of the nearly-stock Android on the Moto G. The Avant can support a 64gb microSD card, whereas the Moto G can only take a 32gb (unless you format it to FAT32 and are OK with not having files over 4gb).
BTW, where are people seeing that this phone has a Snapdragon 400? I can't find actual confirmation of the processor anywhere. Both T-Mobile and Samsungs pages on this phone simply list it as a quad-core 1.2GHz. CPU-Z only lists it as quad core ARM Cortex-A7 at 300MHz - 1.19GHz (link).
Hopefully, especially being usable on AT&T's network, this'll become a popular low-mid end phone and will receive more development attention that the Galaxy Light has.

Awesome, thanks. I've been wondering this since it came out. It strikes me as odd that they wouldn't advertize that it sports the SD400/Adreno 305. Bummer about the FM radio though.
How about an Antutu score?

Looking for cheap android phone for dashcam but...

Needs to be able to take 64gb (128gb would be better but not necessary) micro SD card that can handle class 10 or at least 10MB/s write. This isn't a what to buy market thread, it is a suggestion thread in case anybody makes offers. Please note that mods.
Preferably at least 5mp camera but 8mp would be preferred. Capable of taking solid 1080p video, but solid recording @ 720p is fine. OIS would be real nice, but I don't think there are very many low/mid range phones that have that. I've looked at moto E and moto G but from my research they'll take 64gb but only work stable at class 4 or lower with fat32 format. And I would prefer exfat be compatible, very much so, but i will do fat32 if I have to if all other mandatory prerequisites are met.
Also would like it to be jelly bean or higher for stability purposes. I am currently using a Motorola atrix MB860 but it randomly reboots every once in awhile even though I undid my aggressive undervolts. I DO NOT want that worry in case something happens and the incident is not recorded. It is still working awesome, but at well over 3 years old the USB port is showing it's wear enough that I am using a right angle micro USB adapter because the angled pull helps keep the plug in. A straight micro USB falls out every once in awhile.
And I also would prefer a swappable battery or one that is easy user replaceable if it is sealed. The atrix is on it's second battery, though the first one is still serviceable and good enough for backup just in case. And would prefer a phone that has minimum 8gb internal storage, preferably 16gb, but I'll settle for 4gb if all the other prerequisites are met. A decent sensitive microphone would be handy for those situations I might need to record audio with witnesses or police but is not high priority.
To reiterate, I've researched the moto G and E but too many possible compromises without fully testing one personally. I've also checked out my mom's LG e90 or whatever it is called that T-Mobile has discounted to $100 from $250. It takes terrible pictures, the video is questionable and it not being a flagship I don't trust it all that much. Plus adding nova launcher over LG's terrible skin majorly affects widgets that can be added or worse, not added.
I am looking for something in $150 price range or cheaper, but will pay up to $200 if there are no compromises. Used is fine if USB port isn't worn out and camera lens isnt scratched. A led flash, or any kind of flash is not necessary at all, but handy for a quick flashlight.
Sorry for long post but figure this might be handy for other people that might be interested. Daily roads voyager is an awesome app to utilize as dash cam. It has come in handy for criminal/civil incidents twice already and several times to report litterers when I got home and got their license plate. Don't mess with Texas. Lol. I've considered a glaxy s or another atrix but they have gingerbread and I don't wanna deal with that.
So anybody has some good suggestions that I don't know about or come across? Oh, and preferably 4.5" screen or smallest 4". I tried a galaxy note2 and it was awesome in every way, but just too damn big, and the weight made it vibrate way too much and makes it harder to see minute details when it moves around too much. Hope y'all have some goo d suggestions. Thanks for reading this far and if you have thanks for a suggestion if you have one. I will be sure to update whatever I settle on so other people can get in on the dash cam bandwagon.
