I've seen this mentioned about before. Is everyone experiencing it or is it rom or kernel specific? It's driving me mad!
I'm on cataclysm rom with elementalx kernel
Can anyone else having the issue say what they're running. See if we can get it figured out
Can the people with the issue try this
Type chrome://flags and find this setting (touch scrolling mode at the top) and set it as shown

Latest Cataclysm + Elemental X, Chrome freezes like hell. So Tumblr does.
I have the freezing to.. Ftw . cant use chrome any more
Cataclysm+elemental x
This maybe?
Use Chrome every day. Stock ROM with Code_Blue. Not one freeze.
After reading the link above, maybe I don't have any problems because I use AdAway.
Same problem here with the latest cataclysm + elementalx
Cataclysm 03/16, Franco r72, AdAway, having lots of freezes as well.
Chrome is the culprit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=59487091&postcount=37998

I don't want a logcat. I just fired stock Kernel and it happens exactly the same way, it freezes when chrome is loading the built-in video player when it's loading the page.
Just tried with my One Plus One, stock Kernel, Lollipop, put it on Performance governor - same thing, freezing for like 1-2 seconds with Chrome. It doesn't happen with their AOSP stock browser.
Nexus 9 - same thing.
Nexus 6 - a bit less freezing, but still derps.
Nexus 4 - goodbye interaction, it's jankville.
Heck, it even freezes when using Genymotion running 5.0 for x86 on Chrome. Emulator as well running it with HAXM extension and x86 images, it freezes for like 5 seconds.
This is not an issue with FK, it's Chrome ****ing you.

This is what Artem Russakovskii, Founder of AndroidPolice, stated on g+
Swiffy-converted Flash to HTML5 animated Google AdSense ads cause terrible performance jank in Chrome for Android
I've been trying to figure out what's causing absolutely awful scrolling and general responsiveness performance issues in Chrome onhttp://www.androidpolice.com*lately, and my conclusion is that it's Swiffy that is powering some of Google's AdSense ads with animations. Recently, Google announced that they're now auto converting all Flash ads to HTML5, presumably with Swiffy, but it seems like their own browser takes a huge hit any time it sees them.
The animations themselves are very choppy. We're talking about 2fps.
The browser jank increases 1000%. I tried pausing the Chrome debugger attached to a mobile device via USB debugging and caught Swiffy code using touchstart and touchend, which are known for causing performance issues.
Any time a page loads without animated ads, the performance is fine.
We even tried to apply translateZ(0) to try to force ads to go to the GPU, but don't seem to have much success there.
Any ideas for optimizations that could force ad rendering on the GPU or help otherwise?

Hmm. Now i switch to cataclysm stock kernel and so far so good.
Stock. No problem.
I've had it with stock Android, Custom Roms, Stock and Custom kernels. This is an issue with chrome.
So anyway we can fix? Or are we screwed until an update?

I have adaway installed. But even w adaway I've had the freeze w elemental x but not code blue.
Using Cataclysm + ElementalX Kernel + Adaway. I havent seen any freezes. Maybe its certain sites that cause it. I read it was HTML ads that cause it? I don't do a whole lot of browsing on my phone but every site I have gone to has not frozen on me.
What sites are people experiencing this on?
Using cata 16 mar + eeX 2.11 latest releases and adaway up to date.
Even scrolling down this thread chrome will freeze for anything up to 15-20 secs.
Went back to stock kernal for a bit and didn't suffer the same although never used chrome a great deal.
So is it 100% confirmed its chrome at fault because evidence is misleading?

Recently I've been having an issue with Dolphin browser. I have a Verizon Galaxy S III running stock/rooted.
Sometimes when I long click on a link and then choose open in background, nothing happens. The tab doesn't open/no new tab is created. Maybe it happens 10% of the time. Sometimes I can try the same link 3 times in a row and it doesn't open. I'm sure I'm clicking on the link and then clicking open in background. I'm very careful now that I know of this issue.
The way I sometimes like to browse a forum like this is maybe I open 10 threads in the background and then go through them 1 at a time. If I don't peak at the tab bar after each I open each tab, I may never know that one of the links never opened a new tab. This is definitely a pain.
While Dolphin support was responsive, they were unable to replicate the problem.
Can anyone else replicate this? Just open a forum like this, open 10 or 20 threads in a row in the background and then count and see if that many tabs opened up.
This happens to me too. At random webpages though.
I open them in either backround or in new tab but nothing happens. Afterwards, all these tabs open at once and then Dolphin crashes.
Agreed, this does happen like 90% of the time.
I get the same issue too. I've never really knew why it happened. They never open for me all at once though.
What phones do you all have?
Actually, I tested this out with Boat browser yesterday and I get the same results. That leads me to think maybe it's a Galaxy S III thing or an ICS thing. Don't really know.
Do you get the same thing if you try with Boat browser (or some other browser)?
This is strange.
I was almost expecting this to be an issue with just my phone.
I get the exact same problems. I surf like the original poster, opening 6 or more tabs in the back ground. But when I go to look through them only 2 or 3 actually opened. I have tested it numerous times and it is easy to replicate. It happens almost 50% of the time. It just recently started after "upgrading" to ICS.
MOTORALA droid razr maxx
Dolphin 8.7 browser
Recent ics upgraded android system
I have had the same issue in the past, which is why when I switched to jelly bean I changed my default browser to chrome.
Dolphin would do this probably 25% of the time. It has always happened on my galaxy nexus, so perhaps it is an issue with ics and above. Never had any issues on my og droid when I was on CM7.

Same here on galaxy note custom ics
Wow, never thought I'd have this kind of response. Surprising no one has ever noted this before then.
So, what's in common here? ICS? Someone in here said it happens on JB too though, I think.
Same here.
Samsung Galaxy Nexus toro. Happens on reddit quite a bit.
+1 for me. Happens all the time it's quite frustrating since I want to follow up on multiple links in a page only to find out some didn't open.

I know I started this thread as a dolphin issue, but, for all of you experiencing this, can you replicate the same thing in other browsers?
We really need to find out a common link here.

Is Boat browser using the integrated browser rendering engine? Doplhin is, and I don't know why but I feel like that might be a reason.

Edit: And flash works even with the latest Dolphin. I got the latest flash (v115.12) + Dolphin 8.7.0 and all is good. On CM10 Jellybro

What can I say, I'm too cool for rules!
I went in the default browser and disabled plugins to make it work.
No way. NO WAY. Disabling plugins in default browser actually worked! This has been so annoying! Still occurs with google images search, but much improved. (I'm using motorola XOOM)
If anyone else is having trouble still, just try this: long press a link to open the little menu and hold down on 'open in new tab' instead of just a quick tap. This usually works for me (although a real solution would be great).

What? Are you saying that you went in to your stock browser and set plugins to disabled and after that, you no longer have this tab opening issue in dolphin?
Sorry if this is a bad place to post this question.
With Android 4.4 they have changed the default webview to chromium and now the default browser does not reflow on zoom. I have also tested other browsers based on the internal webview (Lightning and Tint) and they are also unable to reflow on zoom now. Unfortunately, Firefox also dropped reflow recently (WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY FF 24).
I don't remember if chrome ever supported it.
Opera does support reflow!
My questions are
a) Is there any chance that reflow can be fixed in the stock browser by modders?
b) How do you all browse the web without reflow? This is what xda-developers looks like in chrome... Some posts have the font boosted to a readable size but most of them remain tiny and I have to pinch in to zoom then pan across from left to right because it doesn't reflow. Before this "upgrade" the stock browser rendered every site I visit beautifully

Is there anything we can do? Opera is using the Blink layout engine which is to my understanding similar to (a fork of) Chromium. This makes me think that it is feasible to make wrapping work in the new AOSP browser.
ps. Firefox 23 has wrapping and is available from,

I've never used Chrome until after 4.4+ and even then very little. But if I remember right it never did support text reflow. I even went back to 4.3 on my N7 for a couple weeks after the update to 4.4 until I could figure out what to use to replace the AOSP browser. I was a longtime, diehard user of the AOSP browser, effing google screwed that up. So... I've been using Dolphin Browser for a while now and it works great on both my N5 & N7. Has text reflow, scrolling works very well and flash works if you use a modified version of the Flash Player.

Dolphin has reflow because it uses it's own rendering engine. Vanilla android should have it. There was no reason to deprecate the feature from AOSP Browser.
As someone else posted in the google code thread :-

I agree! I was Extremely disappointed to see what happened with the AOSP browser!
The trouble is there are so many goggle/chrome fanbois that refuse to see what is wrong right in front of them, and keep posting how wonderful chrome is... that any pressure to make goggle coders actually produce a good browser falls flat...... or its, horror at the thought, goggle employed shills? because to me it makes no sense whatsoever to be blind to the massive faults of chrome.
basically they can't code a good browser. so resort to breaking others... didn't Microsoft get badly done legally for much less than that?
Dolphin broke my AOSP browser addiction...
I was amazed by dolphin at first. The speed. Flash player. But then it started to become a problem. Just would not load pages. Can't be bothered to fix it

I had this exact same problem! At times there would be 3 different sandboxed processes that would appear on my battery stats and boy did they drain my battery.
As to a fix, I tried everything from clearing chromes cache/data, rebooting, uninstalling chrome updates and even a fresh ROM install but the sandboxed processes still came back. I eventually gave up on chrome and just installed the aosp browser which imho is one of the smoothest/fastest browsers out there! My battery has lasted so much longer now that I stopped using chrome. I suggest you just find an alternative browser

I'm giving Dolphin a spin for the first time in about 2 years. Already I'm blown away by how much faster it is than either Chrome or the AOSP browser. I've never cared for the AOSP browser, to be honest.
Whatever floats your boat man . Still curious as to why these sandboxed processes started popping up out of nowhere though. I went a long time with no such issues using chrome and I believe after upgrading to 4.4.2 is when it began happening. Wonder if there is a screwup somewhere. So strange...

I started having the same from one day to the other. I guess there is no user fix, so it's just up to Chrome devs to manage the memory hog. Is there a fully working (bookmark sync, incognito mode) flashable AOSP browser working with 4.4.2 at this time?

I am having this same issue as well. You would think it would have been fixed by now especially for my nexus 5.... Is the only solution to not use chrome?
I get it too but it doesn't seem ton have too much detrimental affect on the battery, well no more so than you would expect from actually using Chrome.
Are you guys with heavy drain using Chrome Beta?
These sandboxed processes are killing my phone's battery so much. Was looking for a solution and found this thread. So no solution for this issue ?
Just a wild guess but does this happen after leaving Chrome running in the background (multi tasking)? Or even when Chrome is closed.

Happens only while using chrome.
I wont say that this is killing the battery on my Nexus 7; but I realized the chrome.sandbox entries today(2)...had four tabs open in my Chrome browser fresh from a charge..2 happened to have flash content in them. Don't know if that is relevant to the thread or not, but perhaps it might be a useful observation in order to test/diagnose. i.e. maybe its normal and mobile chrome sandboxes threads from pages that contain certain "content". Perhaps this actually makes chrome more secure and stable (anyone ever been on a flash laiden webpage that crashed before?)
Interesting that this is the only thread I've found re: this issue.
I'm forced to restart my phone everyday ,when I don't it becomes really laggy, the phone stutters when I scroll , when I swipe between the homescreen, when I switch between apps, I'm running stock kit Kat with Franco kernel r33, but I remember well the same used to happen when I had my nexus 4 and everything was stock I just had root .
Just closing all opened apps doesn't solve the problem .
Do you guys have similar issues?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I never had to do that with my phone.

Nope. I restart once a week, if that. Never have any lag/stuttering/slowdown issues. Stock rooted.
Sent from my Moto X
Nope. Everything stock at the moment but I've also used Franco r33 and didn't have that problem then either. If you're just using the recent apps screen to close your apps that might not be enough since it'll only list foreground apps and not background services which would more likely be the culprit. If you aren't already, try using an advanced task killer app (I can't recommend any as I don't use them) and try killing services one by one until the lag stops so that you can figure out which app/service is causing it.
There is no reason to use a task killer or to kill all apps.

Not for everyday use, no, but to diagnose which app is being a resource hog what else would you suggest?
I've never restarted my phone due to "lag." My current uptime is about 3 weeks. I'm bone stock.

Never restart. Faux r33 too
Try restoring the factory image and running it for a day or so without any extra apps. At least then you'll know if the phone is faulty. It's likely to be an app or two that are using a lot of memory, but I thought the mighty Nexus could cope with anything!
I have stock ROM, no root, since launch and I've used it everyday 24/7.
No lag problems, never had the need of rebooting it, as a matter of fact sometimes it has been on for more than a month without a poweroff or reboot.
While I've not "had to" restart my N5 due to lag, I have gotten into the habit of restarting it every night when I recharge. I started doing this when google play services (old version) was going haywire and sucking down the battery every now and then.
I only restart my phone when it's really needed (like an app requires reboot and etc)
I restart my phone maybe once every two days or so just to start fresh. Same with your computer restarting it will eliminate processes that you may have started and not ended or background processes running and so on and so fourth.
I only restart when the device doesn't sleep. I find after a day or 2 Google now keeps the device from sleeping. A reboot fixes it right up.
Never experienced lag. Running stock, gravity box, apex launcher and Franco kernel
Sent from my HammerHead
Having to restart your phone that frequently is not normal. Not that it would help a lot, but have you tried switching to ART?
OP, how many apps do you have? Anything else you modified but the kernel? Overclock, underclock, UV, etc.? Give us more infos.
I recently set up my tasker profiles for morning - morning commute - work and home. The last one I have is a nightly reboot at 4am. I just have the tendency to restart my devices daily. Memory dump and fresh start every morning never gives me any issues.
Look into it.

This is what I use as my daily driver and only reboot when an app requires it or once every two weeks when I let it die for battery preservation

I never restart my phone unless there's a need to flash something (ROM update, kernel, etc.).
Also, I think my phone feels smoother than before, especially when I don't clear anything in recent apps.
So i just flashed back the stock kernel and everything went back to normal, I guess I'm done with custom kernels, I've always had bad experiences with them, I don't know if I'm really picky and other people don't notice it, but I can't believe I'm the only one who experiences lag while on custom kernels, maybe the're too agressive trying to save power?

Never faced a lag as yet on my S6. Try a factory reset and set the phone up as a new device without logging into google and samsung. Try not to sync app data from google maybe that will help.
Scrolling in chrome does kind of suck, try other browsers like stock, dolphin or opera

The only time I see lag is when switching apps via multitask, and even then it is not a huge deal. No, it shouldn't have any lag with these specs, but no phone is perfect.
If you have literally "tried everything here and other android sites nothing worked" then sell it now while you can get the most money for it, because it will never be completely lag-free and it obviously keeps you from enjoying the phone.

Are you talking about scrolling lag in Samsung apps, or non Samsung apps, or both?

Force 2d gpu rendering helps to make it less worse. But I know what you are talking about. Those who deny it, are shy to admit it

Browsers lag big time. I still have my s5 and it is super smooth compared to my s6. hopefully it will be fixed.
Tried chrome, stock browser and opera. They all stutter/lag when scrolling whereas the s5 is fast as you like.
EDIT: force GPU rendering does indeed seem to help.
EDIT 2: this thread ( http://forums.androidcentral.com/sa...owser-chrome-facebook-twitter-play-store.html )
suggests that JavaScript is the issue. Turning JavaScript off in chrome does also seem to help a lot!
Perhaps the people who don't see the lag are using Ad blockers which stops it loading JavaScript?

Never noticed any lag and do use AdAway to block ads... never even really tried it without it.
I turned Javascript back on and installed adaway and its still smooth.
Think we've found the culprit!
Maybe it's a bug with JavaScript engine?
This is sunpider JavaScript test running on 5.1.1

Also I noticed certain themes affect the smoothness of the phone.. Some causing to make the phone stutter or glitch when switching orientation.

there is sometimes a bit of lag which i don't mind...but what's really annoy me is the stutter....in the LOG list....try to scroll...you will see it stutter....i was hoping not to run into these but it did happen...sadly
Anything that uses Android System WebView will lag. Anything that uses Javascript will lag. Chrome lags on everything, including Nexus devices.
Forcing GPU rendering helps reduce redraws.
Turning off all window & transition animations (in dev options) removes some eye candy, but those animations just get in the way of doing stuff imo.
A 3rd party launcher like Nova Launcher will make a *huge* difference in your daily usage & satisfaction with the phone.
I have tried all methods. But, I notice scrolling lag only in some of the Google Apps such as play store and play newsstand.
Also, I have got lollipop update for my galaxy note pro 12.2 tablet, which is super fast and lag free compared to s6.
I am hoping some optimization update for Google Apps with respect to s6.

Welcome to android...? Buttery smooth only exists on iOS. However, the s6 line is by far the best when it comes to being snappy.
