Help, can't wipe screen with wipe button! - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I somehow soft bricked my phone and then restored using TWRP and a Nandroid backup, now everything works fine except that I can turn the screen off using the power button but when I press it again it only turns on the led indicator and not the screen. The only way I am able to turn the screen on again is by restarting or plugging in/out the charger.
Thanks in advance!

Were you previously on a Lollipop ROM and now you've restored a KitKat backup? Or the other way around? If so you need to flash the appropriate matching firmware and modem.

No but as you can see from the topic's name my autocorrect has been damaged as well.
Anyway I might have messed up the firmware I'll try and reflash the firmware. Thanks

[Q] Rooted my verizon s3 with instructions on this forum and now I'm am stuck

Everything was fine with the root however I used a font app installer that got the phone stuck in a boot loop (on the rainbow screen). How do I get back to rooted JB?
Did you do a back up of your original rom? You need to get back into recovery...
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
No I didn't. I didn't see that in the instructions or I missed it. Any thoughts on how to get back to rooted JB?
Well if the font app got you into the boot loop then I don't think you lost root, I would get back into recovery wipe cache and hit reboot... See if that works... Good luck
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Unfortunately, I tried that. I think I did an accidental factory reset too but nothing has brought it back from the boot rainbow screen.
Did you unlock using EZ Unlock v1.2? You only mentioned that you rooted.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
No, I didn't use that. I followed the instructions to root found here (worked no problem until I met that $&#^%#& app) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439 I think I can reset using Odin I just don't know what to use
Aight, well did you unlock the bootloader? Your response dictates the suggested route to resolve this.

I did follow the instructions to unlock the bootloader
If that's the case then you just need to boot into recovery and flash a rom. If you were running just stock rooted & unlocked VRBLK3, it's easier to just flash a rooted stock rom like the official VRBLK3 leak here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2034118
Try just flashing that, without wiping, then boot into the rom.
or
If you were on a custom rom, just reflash that rom via recovery and you'll be fine. Unfortunately you lose all your settings of you wipe data in recovery so try reflashing either option without wiping if you absolutely need to try recovering whatever data already exists in your current rom. If this doesn't work, format data, wipe cache then flash the rom.

I will give it a shot and let you know. Thanks so much! I was on stock ROM btw.
Cool, this should work

Ok, this is a zip file. Does it have to be on the phone? If so, how do I put it there?

Yes it does need to be there. If you have an sdcard just drag and drop onto it directly then flash in your custom recovery. Conversely, you should be able to boot into recovery and try connecting your phone to the laptop then dragging the zip over.
The longer method will be to Odin flash VRBLK3 and start all over from there.

I don't use CWM but did you go to Mounts and Storage and select "Mount /sdcard"? Does it connect now?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I went there but it didn't seem to do anything when I selected mount sdcard and conversely didn't connect either

Aight well since that failed, you have to do this the long way: Odin flash the VRBLK3 rooted image from your laptop onto your phone. Choose one of the two images for VRBLK3 and follow the directions.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984436
Edit: I realize I didn't ask but do you have an sd card?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
That worked! Thanks so much. Now, what is the best practice for backing things up so that I don't have this problem again? Should I root first then backup? Do I still have to unlock bootloader? Just wanting to handle this properly from this point forward.
It should be rooted already if you installed the Odin files from MrRobinson thread. It should come with either SuperSU or SuperUser correct? You also should still be unlocked but you can re-unlock using EZ Unlock v.1.2 from the following thread and you're undeniably unlocked. You'll hear a brief audio message if it worked.
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/32456-app-920-ez-unlock-14-easiest-way-to-unlock-your-bootloader/
Also, please perform a nandroid back in CWM so you have something stable to return to if something goes awry in the future. That backup would have cut all this down to one simple step. You don't need to be unlocked to perform a nandroid however you do need to be rooted with a custom recovery.
Lastly, perform an IMEI backup using the "Comprehensive IMEI Backup" thread in the dev section. Do this and save the resulting Synergy zip from backup methods A and B in more than one place not on your phone. This is more so a precaution because flashing things in recovery can and may result in a complete loss of connection with Verizon.

Problem updating to 4.4.2

Hello everyone! My nexus 5 is stock 4.4 rooted with chainfire, and stock recovery.
I received the notification to update to 4.4.2, and accepted, unfortunately it failed, and rebooted normally. I had frozen some system apps with titanium backup (i.e google play music) and think that might've been an issue. I also altered the files necessary to tether.
Wondering how I can try to flash this again? Where is the update stored once downloaded? Can I just flash it in my stock recovery? Thanks for the help in advance.
I have the same problem. I just uninstalled a few apps like play music. Phone is rooted with twrp as recovery.

Freezing apps is fine, it's the tethering mod that is preventing the OTA from flashing.
You can download the factory image and update that way. Flash them one at a time so your data doesn't get wiped.
This might help - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14

Did you do a lockscreen mod? I just updated to 38R and I had to restore the stock keyguard and kernel and uninstall smooth scrolling before it worked.

Your problem is definitely a modified lockscreen, that's why it mentions cmkeyguard.apk in the error. You must be completely stock.

Get the recovery flashable version of 33R from here:
http://dist01.slc.cyngn.com/factory/bacon/cm-11.0-XNPH33R-bacon-signed.zip
Boot into TWRP, perform a full wipe (system/data/cache/dalvik cache), install the zip. Now you'll be completely stock and can flash the OTA zip over the top.

Go to the smooth scrolling and modified lockscreen threads that you downloaded the mods from. Both developers have uploaded files to revert to stock. For the kernel I just googled stock 33r kernel.

Cannot upgrade from 33r to latest 38r OTA or Manually??

I'm on stock 11S XNPH33R (rooted, unlocked bootloader) with TeamWin Custom Recovery and I'm trying to do the new system upgrade but every time I try the OTA it reboots the phone into recovery and does nothing. I tried a manual upgrade by dragging the update into the root of my phone and flashing it via recovery but then it fails, so what is the problem?

You have a custom lockscreen installed, don't you? That's why the update is failing, you can't take an OTA with modified system files.

Incomplete update.

Hi,
I just downloaded and installed the full update for my Shield Tablet ROW LTE and it seems incomplete. I did a full wipe (via TWRP) before installing and the install seemed to go OK, but when I reboot i get a screen like in the pic attached (sorry for poor quality). No nav bar at bottom, no notification bar, no wall paper, no lockscreen. Any ideas what could be the problem? I've reinstalled a few times but no luck.
Thanks for any help.
Are you sure you loaded the correct file?
Have you tried a factory reset?
Otherwise, try to clear cache in TWRP recovery and reinstall the rom?

Dude the SAME thing happened to me just today! Flashing old backups, and the OTA files, the problem persists.
Edit: Actually, I switched to CWM, and it worked just fine... I can only imagine it has something to do with /boot, which as far as I know you can't wipe in TWRP.
Which version of TWRP are you guys using? The one based on v.2.8.2.0 or v.2.8.5.0?
If v.2.8.5.0, try the v.2.8.2.0 instead as some have reported problems with v.2.8.5.0.

I'll try CWM using latest TWRP and continues to fail. I am definitely using the correct update zip.

Did factory reset, definitely correct update zip, reinstalled at least ten times, wiping cache etc. Nothing works. Will flash cwm later and try with that

OK, to update I tried CWM and both versions of TWRP to no avail. I had to download the full LTE RoW Recovery OS Image and flash it via fastboot and now all is well. Thanks for the comments and suggestions.
