[Q][HELP!] Wi-Fi Stuck "Turning On", Multiple Reboots - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Thanks for reading this thread.
My beloved Nexus 5 rebooted 2 days ago and was stuck in a loop. I went into Recovery and cleared the cache, hoping it would stop the looping. I was able to get it stable at first, but then I realized the Wi-Fi is now stuck in a persistent "Turning Wi-Fi On..." mode. The MAC address reads "Unavailable" in the Phone Status section of the Settings.
Things I tried:
Clearing cache
Airplane mode on/off
Factory Reset
Wi-Fi Fixer (app)
Simultaneous Factory Reset & OTA Update to 5.1
Unlock & Root (was previously locked and stock)
Clearing of /data/wifi directory
Modification of .bdaddr and .macaddr files with Hex Edit as per the detailed instructions in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52441901&postcount=47
I believe I have truly exhausted my options. Google phone support merely transferred me to LG tech support, which told me to pay up and ship out my phone before any repair quotes are given. That is truly a last resort to me. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

What you have not tried is flashing the factory images.
Factory reset simply clears the /data partiton. If there is an issue with any other partitions, it will not fix those.
If flashing factory images cleanly does not work, then you have a hardware issue.

I will download the factory image and try that. Thank you in advance if it works.

I'm also have this issue on a clean install of the factory image.

If you have this problem on a 100% clean install with zero modification and nothing installed, you have a hardware issue.

Well, I downloaded the factory images from Google's website & ran the script to install all of them. It took about 10 minutes to run but it completed.
Still no Wi-Fi :crying:
My Nexus exited its warranty period in November, so I'm going to have to see if Google will replace it for me anyway. Something definitely went wrong in the hardware. RIP Nexus

[Q] Can't factory reset, gives strange error in CWM

I have a US Verizon launch day Xoom that has been rooted since day one. It has been trouble free until now. I recently attempted to upgrade to 2.1 Hammerhead from MantaRay and I got this error in CWM verTiamat R4c-100611 while I was doing a factory/data reset "Error Removing /data/data/com.google.android.location/file/cache.wifi."
I noticed the error but rebooted the system anyway. When I rebooted I was now on Hammerhead 2.1, but noticed several problems. One being I lost function in the Home softkey. I also noticed all my apps and data were still intact as I left them on MantaRay. I like to start fresh with a factory/data reset whenever changing roms to avoid issues so I went back and attempted another wipe and flash of Hammerhead. I got the same error in CWM verTiamat R4c-100611. I rebooted to the same problems in the ROM.
Thinking it might be a problem with the recovery, I reflashed CWM verTiamat R4c-100611, flashed Team Rouges CWM v1.0, and finally reverted back to CWM verSolarnz 120511-2030, and got the same error every time I would attempt a factory/data reset.
I then attempted to do a factory/data reset from within the privacy menu in the ROM. I got the screen with the android and the triangle/exclamation point overhead when I tried. I also unistalled a few apps and cleared data on the google ones. No matter what I do I can not erase the data.
I did some searching around but could not find any info on this specific error. Im hoping I missing something and it is an easy fix. I'm running out of ideas tho. Any advice would be much appreciated!
Pic is of the error message I get no matter what recovery I use.

That is strange and troubling, if indeed this problem just came out of nowhere. I know that you can wipe data in fastboot, though I can't remember the exact syntax right now, but it should be available.
On edit: try: fastboot erase userdata. & fastboot erase cache
I think you do need to wipe/factory reset between Manta Ray and Hammerhead as the framework was changed/fixed, among other things.
Thanks Okantomi! Your advice worked perfect.

Weird problem. Cannot factory Reset. Phone keeps restoring previously installed apps.

Hi There,
I have been having the Samsung Galaxy Sl for 2 months now and the software kept crashing. I went to privacy and opted for a factory reset. Funny thing is no matter how many times I do a factory reset the phone restarts, and installs all the apps which i personally installed again. This is not a google recovery problem where all data is backed up in google. But the apps just magically reappear even after formatting the internal sd in recovery mode and reflashing it to the latest firmware. I am at a loss. I got a shock that even after reflashing my firmware to the latest 2.3.4 JKPJ5 it still reinstalls apps such as AVG, the BBC News, Cool reader.. And even my old wallpaper again.
Steps I have taken:
1) Formatted internal sd
2) Used recovery mode and wiped partition and cleared cache
3) Did factory reset and even installed a new firmware.
I have done everything. Pls help. My home button is also not working and the all the corrupted data from my old installation also comes back
Even when I restart my phone, any new apps i install vanish and are again replaced by the old apps.

Funny thing is i tried the reset codes. And only some work. I tried the reset code *2627*3855# . But I get an error saying its a connection probelm or invalid MMI code.
Sorry bangalorerohan. But I am not getting any replies in the Q&A section. I will just continue here for now..
Tell me the method you used to flash the new FW! I will tell you your error!
The probelm began before I even considered flashing my firmware. The sd card will be unexpectedly removed causing forced closes. Did a factory reset using the privacy menu quite a number of times for a few weeks. It helped for a while but the problem will always reocurred though. Then suddenly, factory resets stopped working alltogether. The phone will delete new apps i install every time i reinstall them and reinstall apps which i uninstall every time i restart the phone.
I thought flashing the firmware will fix the problem. But even after flashing the old apps and settings keep coming back.
Here are the steps I used to flash.
1) Removed sim card and micro sd card.
2) Restarted phone in download mode.
3) Run odin and plugged phone in Usb port
4) Checked Repartition, Auto Reboot, and Reset Time boxes.
5) Downloaded pit files.
6) Waited for it to pass
7) Pressed reset
8) Took phone out from usb port, took out battery and turned on download mode.
9) Flashed PDA, PHONE, AND CSC files. By ticking Auto reboot and reset time checkboxes.
10)Clicked Start
11) Waited for pass and started again.
I even tried using the recovery mode to wipe everything but still had the same problem. Apps and settings still keep reocurring from the corrupted android 2.2
I have done everything and am hoping for a solution for this frustrating problem. THinking of reflashing to android 2.2 and sending my phone to samsung for warranty.

I think you have done everything correctly. Maybe it's a hardware problem because your sd card keeps unmounting. Have you dropped it? They best way is to send it to service center for repair.

reflashing back to froyo
Hey guys thanks for your help. but the problem seems to be related to the hardware. I am reflashing my phone back to froyo and sending it to get the warranty. But after reflashing there seems to be another problem. I cant receive calls anymore. But i can make calls..
I need to know if samsung can find out if I have reflashed my phone because I am afraid that my warranty will be void. Is there anyone with experiece regarding samsung warranty?

play dumb, dont mention you flashed, tell them you tried to update with kies and since then the FW is acting up, you can't make calls anymore etc
Interestingly... i have exactly the same problem. I have had this problem for abt 4 months now and i have tried everything (except sending it back to the repair centre). I don't think its a hardware problem but more of a bad flash somewhere in between.
i have been searching the net for ages for a solution... have yet to find any.
Hi all:
I've got the same problem!!
Has any one a solution? I'm crazy with this.
Why do i keep posting on threads that have already been resolved!!

[Q] Wifi XOOM 3.2 boot loop help!

First off, I have done a search and read dozens of threads, none of which solved my problem...
I have a wifi xoom, which I rooted many months ago without any problems. Recently updated to 3.2 like a month ago or so. I have not made ANY changes within the last month, and the tablet has been working perfectly.
A few days ago, I left the tablet to charge. Once charging was complete, I turned it on and its stuck on the boot animation. I just keeps playing over and over again, I've let it sit for 10+ minutes, with nothing happening...
I tried removing the SD card then rebooting, and its the same result....
Please help! If need be, I can go back and look up all the exact steps I've done to root and get it to where it is today. Like I said though, it has been working perfectly, and I have not made any new changes in at least a month... I don't see why this would happen all of a sudden...
Have you tried to reinstall firmware?
Regards.

No need to panic.
When you rooted, did you install CWM Recovery, and if so, do you have a recent nandroid backup? Have you tried rebooting into recovery?
What steps have you followed to get out of your bootloop?
Yes, I have Clockword Mod Recovery 3.2.0.0 R4c 100611-1150
Upon attempting a restore everything appears to work properly until the end when it gets to restoring data, I get an error, regardless of which restore image I use(I tried all the ones I have). It reads as follows:
"Restoring data...
Error removing /data/data/com.noshufou.android.su/cacheError while formatting /data!"
I also attempted a clean wipe/factory reset with similar unsuccessful results. I get an error during formatting data, which reads:
"Formatting /data...
Error removing /data/data/com.noshufou.android.su/cacheFormatting /cache..."
The rest of the formatting appears to run successful for /sd-ext and /sdcard
Have you manually tried to format the system, cache and data? This can be done from the advanced menu.

From the advanced menu I see:
Reboot Recovery
Wipe Dalvik Cache
Wipe Battery Stats
Report Error
Key Test
Partition SD Card
Fix Permissions
Sorry, we're forgot talking about Cwm. It's under mounts and storage.
Still the same result as before... I went to mounts and storage > format /data
"Formatting /data...
Error removing /data/data/com.noshufou.android.su/cacheError formatting /data!"
Try format system first then data and cache.
My suggestion would be to go back to stock and then re-root. You can find the stock download on the Moto Dev home page.
+1. Restocking link. MOTODEV > Produ / Software http:/.ly/sQtpKQ bit cts > Device. Then use universal root method reroot.

Thanks everyone! I was hoping I would be able to fix it without going back to stock, but since I was unable to I just went that route.
Going stock worked, and I am back to where I was before, so thank you for the advice! In case anyone else may have this problem, this is what I did:
Went back to stock using this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1049485
Then rooted using this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1242241
Then got back to 3.2.1 using this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1278214

Nexus 5 not working after 4.4.2 update

So, got the 4.4.2 update , downloaded it and then it asked for a reboot. I did reboot. I am completely stock , no root nothing. Now the update was installing but in the end I got error :/ the image was robot kinda looking like he had heart attack... anyways, it gave me 4 options, so i cliked volume button .. I don't know all the options but from the 2 of them, one was reboot and other was clear cache or something. I thought clearing cache may **** up something on phone so I tried scrolling back on the top.. but to my surprise from volume buttons phone didn't let me go up at all :/
I didn't had any choice but to choose clear cache.. I thought it may help. But it didn't... so I forced reboot it with power button hold for 10 seconds.. Now phone is working but no sim on it starts.. no signal whatsoever. If I try to open my gallery, it doesn't open. says "No storage, no external storage available" .. when I try to connect usb to phone and try to backup my pics and stuff from pc it doesn't open anything. PC does show "Internal memory" but there's nothing in it. My phone doesn't let me even use wifi. So I thought it was time to factory reset, but to my surprise when I click erase everything, it does nothing. So, I thought of rebooting and clicking "power+volume down" , still nothing.. it shows the same robot pic having heart attack... I doesn't have knowledge of root and stuff for now, I am a simple user of nexus 5 who is still on stock. Any help please? I am worried here now
Think you're gonna need to follow one of the guides to flash stock system again

---------- Post added at 04:09 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:59 AM ----------
I did a factory reset and its working now. What a headache Google!
Mistake 1: not allowing the phone adequate time to clear the cache when finished installing the ota. If you force the phone to restart during this process, it will corrupt your cache which causes all of those issues listed above (loss of signal, no baseband info, loss of access to mountable storage, etc).
Cache clearing takes considerably longer than on any other device I've owned prior to this phone, so messing with the phone during that important cache clearing process is the issue.
Mistake 2: reflashing the entire phone to stock. In the event you become impatient and decide to force your device to restart, you DONT HAVE TO revert to stock to get the phone working. What you have to do is restore functionality to the cache portion of the phone. All of your files are in fact still on the phone and accessible, you just have to unbreak your phone. You do this by procuring cache.IMG from the stock image of the phone (available on googles websites), and then you fastboot flash the file in the boot loader (look up adb commands to do this). Once this is done, reboot the phone and everything should be hunky dory after your applications cache is rebuilt and android boots.
Note: you might need to check for root again. Also if you corrupted your cache you will have to set all of your ringtones and notifications again because this cache corruption process unlinked the ability of yours apps that use notifications to "see" the sound files you have on your SD card.

What a savior ... wiped the cache again , gave adequate time this time and it booted again fine
I had the exact same problem! Cleared cache in recovery mode in 4.4.4 and then thought it stalled because it was running for 1 minute (which normally took 2 seconds in previous devices) so I forced a restart. Then I had all sorts of errors: couldn't connect with my SIM card, couldn't download our see my pictures, screen rotation but working, constant Google Playstore crash popups, and more.. I thought I'd bricked it. A few more attempts to clear cache in recovery mode, still took longer than 1 minute (also the same errors in my recovery mode like stated above: "E: failed to mount /cache" ... that sort of things)
A few days later I'd had it. My steps for the SOLUTION:
1. Cleared cache in my settings: settings -> storage -> cache (don't know if this has influenced the outcome but I did it).
2. Went back to recovery mode, errors still displaying, but tried again to clear cache. The only difference now was that I left it running without touching my Nexus 5 for about 10 MINUTES(!).
..........To my surprise it ended with "clearing cash complete" WOW! So I rebooted and everything worked fine again! The only thing was that I had to set some notification sound again. That wasn't too hard
Let me know if it helped in your case

I did that. The fastboot flash cache.img and still have the error...
Try flashing a stock rom, including the userdata.img file. Flash the userdata file last, right after flashing, boot into recovery and perform a factory reset.
. You do this by procuring cache.IMG from the stock image of the phone (available on googles websites),
where to get the cache.img from.
i have searched the folder of the stock rom after extraction, couldn't find one.
and my phone is soft bricked.
also its a asus zenfone 5(501 cg) with 4.4.2 not a nexus but with similar problem(rebooted phone without waiting for cache wipe to finish )

Samsung Unusual Between Boot loop and Softbrick? Data recovery.

Hey guys,
Is data recovery possible after a flash? Also, what is wrong? I have searched but no answer directly hits on this. I am not a tech guy- Biology- sorry for that ahead. To the issue, I dlowded a software update to my Galaxy s3.....and boom froze on Samsung screen. I can turn phone off and on. It would not boot past Samsung. So I went into cache partrition, and tried a system reboot- cannot. So then I seen a program that supposively recovers data after factory reset if you do nothing else to the phone. However, problem I hit te dreaded factory reset- nothing. Over a software update? My computer is not recognizing the device. So I went to Samsung, they tried installing software, however, the computers were recognizing, but not connecting. One tech said they did not have flash- I went back again, the othertech said they did. Anywho, after 4 days, I forked my phone over to a repair guy. He I believe tried Odin- as it currently sits in odin mode. Now it was getting into download mode- but ow I have this message- " Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again." A samsung guy mentioned it might be able to be flashed, as my concern data- not backed up. This info is pretty important, as I have several contacts and mssgs. The two modes my phone can go into: Odin and recovery. I could really use the help, on both saving data, and getting the phone to fire- as it might be able to- but data?
Thanks in advance.
