OTA'd to 5.0.1 - Want to Downgrade for Root - Verizon HTC One (M8)

So after getting my phone from Verizon, the OTA hit and updated my phone to 5.0.1 and I can't find a way to restore it back to 4.4.4.
I see Sunshine is working on getting it setup for Lollipop, but i have no idea how far away that is.
So does anyone know how I can get back to 4.4.4 to downgrade?

Unfortunately, it cannot be done. If you're s-on, and you have taken the upgrade, you're stuck until jcase updates Sunshine to support the latest software.
I really wish there were an option to roll back, my phone is ridiculously laggy since the update.

The last ETA that jcase tweeted was "any day" but it most likely won't support the latest VZW update.

So a factory wipe won't do it?

That just wipes user installed apps and settings

I'm on stock 4.4.4 just got this phone and have gotten root using sunshine so I have s-off with twtp recovery. I want to keep things stock so if I returned to stock recovery And took the update to lollipop would I still have root? Thanks.

Not 100% sure but I think you have to be stock, unrooted or the OTA will fail. Since you're s-off already it's easy just to flash twrp and re-root once you take the OTA

Check Tigerstown's firmware thread first. He was going to post a pure stock ROM today

So, I think i'm in the same boat.. right now I am on 4.4.4, S-on, temp root w/ weaksauce 2.0. 100% stock besides that. I would like to update to 5.0, but want to keep root. Now since there's no root like weaksauce for 5.0, what are my options for updating to LP but still being rooted??
I have run the Sunshine APK up to the point it says it WILL work, but nervous about pulling the trigger and going all the way for warranty reasons. Would I be able to run the current sunshine to get S-off, then flash TWRP recovery, then flash the permanent root exploit and then install SuperSU. Take the OTA to LP. Once that's done, re-install TWRP and then flash root and super SU? As I understand it, S-off carries over through the OTA, but root does not??? All I really want is root to run Wifi tether app when I need to, other than that I really like the stock HTC Sense..
Sorry, but still kind of new and bewildered with the HTC stuff, all my other toys were Moto in the past so that's what I am used to tinkering with.
BTW Jcase said on his twitter @TheRootninja...new Sunshine release tomorrow (3-15-15)

Pull the trigger!
Even if you S-off @dottat has a way to flash a S-off RUU, remove root, lock the bootloader, turn S-on then flash a S-on RUU and nobody could ever tell you were S-off at one point
Your scenario up there is almost correct, except after flashing the permanent root exploit in TWRP you have to flash the stock recovery back if you want to take the OTA. After taking the OTA you then would have to flash TWRP back and root again. A hassle I would not bother with.....
@Tigerstown will post a totally stock 5.0 rom in his firmware thread. He promised it for today - if it's not there already it will come... Just wait with the update until it's out.
So a much easier scenario would be:
Use sunshine and flash TWRP.
Flash the 5.0 firmware from Tigerstown's thread, then flash the 5.0 stock rom from the same thread. Done

I just used it to remove the red text, but you can flash the one for showing Locked and s-on.

So I could flash the Faux HBOOT screen, or clear the tampered and unlocked flags and it's essentially the same thing?

[Stock Recovery] Use 4 OTA

Here is the stock recovery that was pulled from the newest ota.
http://www.megafileupload.com/en/file/520717/stockrecovery-img.html
This can be flashed with fastboot and the latest ota can be installed as normal. You can then flash TWRP or CLOCKWORKMOD recovery back when finished.

Leave S-Off, the OTA neither affects or is affected by the S-Off.
You just need the stock recovery to flash.
Yes.. u don't need to take it back to s-on.
Get back to stock Rom (may be on it now if you haven't flashed any roms)
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash recovery "name of file".img
reboot and flash the ota from settings menu

If you have S-off, this OTA (nor any OTA I have ever heard of) won't take away your ability to root it again.
You will not loose root or s-off. It has been verified! this OTA is safe and was finished before we even had s-off. I do agree not to take an ota until the developers look at it to make sure you wont loose the ability to s-off or root. It is not the case here. If you are on the stock rom you will be fine.

it can be confusing for new users when seeing conflicting posts. nabbed is correct, though. from my reading it's confirmed by those who bring us s-off
never want to take OTA.. it can be pulled and flashed.. no reason to risk losing s-off permanently. and yes it is very possible from an OTA

From a theoretical perspectives its possible for OTA remove S-off. However, as I said, this OTA will not take away S-Off. Keep in mind there are legit S-Off phones out there that would be ruined by such an OTA.
Also, I have never heard of that ever happening, i.e. an OTA S-on'ing a device. If you know this has happened before, please link me to a source.
As far as I know, no OTA has ever caused an S-On. Losing root yes, but that can be easily fixed if you have S-off.

No worries. Didn't meant to sound mean or anything. I have heard the same thing. "Never flash an OTA, ever." ...And if you are S-on, that is true as the OTA could remove root and/or make it more difficult to root/S-off. However, I have never heard of an OTA turning an S-Off device back to S-off.
My question is a genuine one. Has anyone actually shown that at some point an OTA has S-on'ed a device?
After installing the OTA then flashing twrp again I lost root. No biggy just had to flash super su again. Im not one to contribute to placebo but the speed of this build is very noticeable. Just see how much quicker the multitasking button works.
Only thing I'm noticing is my gestures aren't working anymore hmmm....

Stock 4.4.3 root or roll back options.

I have rooted a phone since my GNex and want to get back in the game.
From what I gather a fully stock M8 that got the 4.4.3 update can not root or revert back at this time. Is that correct? Sunshine only works if you have Soff?

install the sunshine APK on your phone from here, make sure you have it enabled to allow 3rd party installs. Once the app is installed, open it... it will go through a series of compatibility tests and, if all is well you will be prompted to pay the $25... once payment is processed just follow the instructions on the screen and you will be bootloader unlocked and SOFF....

Reasonable enough, sorry if this is another dumb question but I havent been paying much attention to these boards since I rooted, I see that recent phones require Sunshine to root, is that because of the firewater method being patched via a software update (4.4.3?) or some other manufacturer change that I shouldnt be concerned with if the old root method already works for me?

[Q] Help: Accidentally let the OTA through

Hi everyone,
I've got a Verizon HTC One M8 that was at Android 4.4.3, and which I have used Sunshine to get s-off so that I could use SUinstaller and get a basic rooting of my phone. I run it using the Xposed Framework and Greenify, so I kinda need root to make those effective.
Anyway, I've been touching "Update Later" for a few weeks now, waiting until I had time to sit down and figure out what I had to do to keep root when I took the update to 4.4.4. Unfortunately the dialog box surprised me this morning when I was going to do something else, and I ended up accidentally hitting the "Update Now" button.
As I got s-off with Sunshine, I assume getting root back isn't gonna be that difficult, but I just don't know how to.
Is there an app to give me root again? Do I need to flash a ROM? I want to keep it pretty stock, I don't necessarily want a custom ROM, and I want to be able to use this new Eye Experience thing that they've added.
Thanks to anyone that decides to help me out,
Chris

All you to do is use ADB commands on your computer. Just unlock the bootloader. Then flash zip for twrp. Once you do that, install a rom. But u may be thinking, maybe I need root. And the answer is TWRP automatically roots your phone because it installs all the Supersu binaries to your phone. Hoped this helped. If it didn't, just ignore it.

Totally not applicable. Guessing you aren't a vzw user? Op is s off via sunshine. Sunshine unlocks bootloader and turns s off. Op needs to simply flash twrp and latest su.zip. Also, on vzw you can't unlock bootloader unless s off. We don't get to HTC dev here... And besides, once s off, what does it matter if locked or unlocked?
Second post in this thread hit the nail on the head. @MotoTurbo

I don't think you understood my post.
the original post stated S-OFF via sunshine. this means bootlocker unlocked and S-OFF. VRZN doesn't allow free bootloader unlock via htcdev.
if this 4.4.4 release via OTA, then firmware updated (this is good). since still S-OFF, just flash lastest TWRP img (via fastboot) and install ROM (VenomONE v3.0 -- if you have 4.4.4 firmware).
you still be good to go... -GA
Yep I had the same question.
If you're S-Off, you should have stayed S-Off. Flash a custom recovery(e.g. TWRP), download Chainfire's SuperSU, and flash it to your phone.

Just got this phone, and have a few questions about rooting.

Hey guys, ive just bought one of these and its on 4.4.2. Its not giving me a notification for the lollipop OTA, but the HTC sync software says there is one. Now my question is, Should I root and unlock bootloader before doing the update or after? Which one would be a less time consuming process? Also, are there any methods of unlocking the bootloader without using the sunshine app? I guess ill pay if i have no choice, but ill have to wait till next month before i have the money to do so and im itching to remove this godawful verzion bloat. One last thing, i bought the phone from a reseller in India, and am using it on a GSM network currently, but will use it with a CDMA one in future (its working now, tested on 2 CDMA networks). I just want to make sure that updating will not stop it from working with Indian CDMA.
You can use the weaksauce method. Then I would flash the 5.1 lolliGPE ROM. Its a well-developed rom.

firewater has been discontinued.
Hey,
Just rooted m8 verizon.
They only thing which is actually works right now it Sunshine.
You can purchase it for 25$ from here:
http://theroot.ninja/
After that, you download SuInstaller, then restart the phone.
Then - install from google play "SuperSu" app.
Enter it, choose - "normal", wait a few secs.
Thats it. You have permanent root.
Good luck, mate

MUCH easier to do on 4.4.2! Run Sunshine - bingo.
On 5.0.1 (and only the earlier version 4.17.605.5 - not on the latest update 4.17.605.9, you have to downgrade to .5 to get S-Off at all) you have to jump through quite a few hoops with King Root for Sunshine to gain root long enough to S-Off.
S-Off NOW.
Then update every which way you like: OTA if you didn't change anything else, flashing a RUU or just the 5.0.1 firmware and a corresponding ROM - your choic

Thanks! S-off now and a 5.0 ROM seems to be the way to go!
5.0 ROM or 5.0 OTA if you don't mind the VZW bloat. I have been putting off loading a ROM on this replacement unit because I very much like Sense and I'm waiting for some stable Sense7 ROMS that don't have a bunch of VZW caveats. Dottat has a stock ROM and a stock debloated ROM which is pretty ok.
You basically just have to pick Sense or GPE or AOSP, once you're S-OFF you really can't go wrong unless you are hasty or don't read instructions.

Hey ive finally got s-off and bootloader unlock via sunshine, but i cant seem to be able to install twrp. it just gets stuck on the entering recovery screen. Ive tried installing it via windroid and flashify(using weaksauce), but neither seems to be working. Any idea what to do?
Flash it in fastboot. If you don't know how then now is the time to learn.

Hey, I tried that and still no luck. Im at my wits end here. Could it be possible that the latest version of twrp is incompatible with 4.4.2?

You could flash this in ruu mode or unzip and flash the recovery.img in it.

I was planning to use your RUU(pre rooted) only. Just one final confirmation, when exactly do i flash the recovery during the install of the RUU?
