Switching from nexus 5 to new device? - General Questions and Answers

Hello xda,
currently I use a nexus 5 and I'm very happy with it, but I want something new. My sister will get my nexus 5.
I'm thinking about 3 devices
Note 4
Pro's:
Good camera
Big and removable battery
Good display
Con's:
Touchwiz
What about updates after 5.0.1?
Nexus 6
Pro's:
Pure Android
Many custom roms and kernels
Con's:
Camera not so good as note 4
What about screen burning?
Htc one m8
Pro's:
Nice design
Good speakers
Con's:
Camera
What about updates?
Can someone help me by my decision? Or are there any other good devices I have forgotten?
Thanks a lot

Buy a Nexus Phone, if you are a developer, love the Stock Android and want quickest update. Nexus Phones are made for developers. Buy the Note 4, if you want a Great Camera with lots of productivity features. If you love photography, consider the Note 4. Performance is also phenomenal and I assume that it will get updates since updates are important part of competition. Buy HTC M8, if you want to show something to show. Its has great design and good performance.
May be this helps you
Hit the thanks button if helped

Note 4, good phone just has a huge screen. Not many custom roms out there
Nexus 6, great phone, customizable, a lot of support for it regarding modding it.
M8, never had experience with the M8 first hand, however I have heard it is a great phone.
Suggestions:
LG G3, it can be rooted and ROMs are available for it and it has a QHD display. The nexus 6 is more expensive for similar specs. There is also a lot of support for this phone regarding modding.
I had a Nexus 5 and jumped to a G3 and have not looked back. Have it running on CM12 and considered jumping to a nexus 6 when they came out. I was disappointed as the specs were practically the same and it cost about 200$ more. They are easy to manage and also have a removable battery.

An Upgrade to the LG G3 32GB would cost me 200€ extra money. Do you think it is worth it?

I would suggest Nexus 6 (Only for the Roms and community is woth it).
And HTC M8, the build quality of this phone is superb and you have at least the GPE roms.

Yes, nexus used to be the best ratio specs/price but this one... You can choose the M8 anyways, I dont recomend samsung phones, seriously, touchwizz is s****

Short feedback. I switched to LG G3 and very happy with the device. Currently running lollipop 20h not rooted, because looks a little bit difficult at the moment. Sometimes switching between apps is a little bit slow, per haps an update could help. Battery life and camera are awesome.

Personally I would say the Note 3, I am getting mine this weekend. If you really use your phone for videos and gaming and just overall alot of screen time and like big phones/screens, then get the Note 3. If you don't use your phone for other then maybe a few games or apps here and there and don't like big phones/screens get the Nexus 5. The Nexus 5 is a good phone, but all in all it isn't really a multimedia phone in my opinion. Though so might say otherwise.
The Nexus phones are really meant for developers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_Dev_Phone
it should come down to cost and potentially hand size.
The note 3 is slightly better, but significantly more expensive.
If cost is a factor or if you have girl hands, go N5. If cost isn't a factor and/or you have man hands, go note 3.

As a woman, I object to that.
Anything over 4" is too big to hold as a woman, so what does it matter if it is 5 or 5.7"? (Put that thing back in your pants lads, your phallus does not have a screen, let alone the ability to multitask.)
I wouldn't go back to a smaller phone if they paid me for it. No way.

Really now, a note 3 can be compared with a nexus 5? In which area except the fast software updates? I want to know also.

Nexus 5 is a lot cheaper, for the price it's hard to beat. Still though the Note 3 is a much better phone overall.

I think you probably posted in the wrong forum to get an honest opinion.
I've been contemplating this too. Price is a factor. I also like the clean look vs the mess of status bar icons. Although it looks like I can address that through themes etc. The biggest things for me is the bigger screen and battery. I may go back to a Nexus device sometime, but for now I decided on the Note 3

They do have the same processor.
No comparison, the Note has sd card and changeable battery. Those are absolutely essential for me so the nexus doesn't even bear consideration.

Agreed. Those were my factors plus the multi window capability.
I have a Note 3 even though I was going to get a Nexus to receive the updates sooner. When they released the Nexus 5 I feared I would regret buying the Note, but no. I love this device and I don't think Nexus 5 offers a lot more compared to this, and it doesn't have spen. But keep in mind I wanted a big phone to replace a tablet too, so if you want something smaller and don't nees the spen, Nexus is an excellent choice for the price.

Sure it's cheaper and that's why it lacks the 40% of the things that N3 has.
I repeat you cannot compare 2 devices that are in 2 different categories with the biggest different imo the pen. Only phones with pen can be compared. Academically speaking nexus is great device for its price really but honestly if you go for N3 and used to the pen abilities there is no going back. I haven't touched with fingers except some zoom in/out since day 1.

Absolutely but the op hasn't really been clear about what they want from a phone so I stated the only logical reason to choose the Nexus 5 - price.

Go Nexus if you don't care about its poor battery life. At least you will be free of this Knox and locked bootloaders crap. It's also way cheaper and you will have way more roms and customizations available.

Congratulations on your first post I was in the same situation, whether to wait for Nexus 5 (still own Nexus 4) or buy this beast. And as you said it, I never regreted it, absolutely beatifull peace of hardware. And surprisingly, love the amoled and its deep blacks. I am back on Samsung after years of HTC/Google phones. Still need to get used to S-Pen, barely ever using it, but the phone is excellent even without it.
Got a Nexus 5, loved it but had issues with my 3UK home signal box so got a Note 3. Personally I prefer the Nexus 5 as its much easier to handle. Nexus I can use with one hand but when I do the same with the Note 3 I feel like i'm going to drop it. Both are amazing phones but to me 5" is the sweet spot for the mobile phone screen size.

So.. you compare specs.. whats the point ?
What a terrible biased "review" of both devices.
* You buy a Samsung Note series device for the S-Pen first, and whatever they throw in including the kitchen sink is icing on the cake
* You buy the Note 3 for the expandable memory and the removable battery! In which case you can add on a 2nd oem battery or use a plethora of external higher capacity batteries that are available
* what about the triple mic's on the note 3? The adaptive sound dsp?
* How easy to not mention about multi-window use on the note 3, the killer slow motion with 1/4, 1/3, 1/2 speed adjustments, the browse while you stream video window ability with the stock video player, the adjustable AMOLED color profiles, bluetooth 4.0LE, advanced modes, the wifi-direct modes
* what about the screen writing which works amazingly well? The s-Pen command mode with scrapbook, screen write, and the pressure sensitive screen???!!
* Don't forget the sensors on the note 3: Accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass, barometer, temperature, humidity, gesture
* how good the camera really is and no camera focus lag like on a nexus 5
* even if you guys don't like touchwiz, a simple launcher can fix that. But the bulk of the phone is made even better by samsung, really.
* and best of all it works on Verizon's network. Supports simultaneous LTE data and CDMA voice.
The pros on the nexus 5:
* price <---
* OIS in camera but what's the point when the extremely laggy focusing is in play
* IPS screen with ultra pixel density; at least no worries like SAMOLED screen burn
Those are about the 3 pro's going for the nexus in my book. I don't want stock android for it does NOTHING! Samsung threw in all the whiz bang features and if you don't like the features turn them off. At least you have that feature to turn off vs. a stock android which has nothing! I find it interesting the so called hard core android user choose nexus because they choose to have stock everything on the phone no extras. But what is the point of owning a smartphone in which you don't have any fancy features? Why not just get a regular dumb phone and call it a day.
And the article states you rarely change batteries - what a joke - because when my battery gets near 30% which is about 1day to 1.5days/2days time, I just swap it out in less than 40 seconds with a fresh one waiting in the charger. I use a 64GB Samsung mSD card now to hold all the 4K videos and 60fps 1080p videos and also the mic on the note 3 is extremely good! You can even zoom in the mic!
You shouldn't even compare the note 3 to the nexus 5 because the note 3 really is a fantastic phablet. The nexus 5 is a good phone for the price but again, if you want stock android that does nothing, go for it!

If you have the money for the note 3, it is a no brainer.
But nexus devices are still amazing.

Had both - started with the Note 3,sold it for the nexus 5, sold the nexus 5...and there I am, back with a black Note 3
The nexus is a BEAUTY! I love the design, the handling, the screen...I love the speed, the back of the device, the simplicity.
BUT:
I just can't go with a SP on which i can't rely on in terms of battery life. Not a great step forward from the nexus 4 - i am more a heavy user. And folks : if i have to turn off Google now just to be able to get through the day, there is seriously sth wrong. I want to be "power independent" and that is simply impossible with the nexus. And still the camera is kind of bad.
No, the Note wins in all terms. (at least for me)

[Q] Should I upgrade to the S6?

I have a note 4 with T-Mobile right now. I don't mind the lack of a SD slot or removable battery. I also am tired of no lollipop on my note 4. I do want to avoid bloated touch wiz lag and battery issues. Thoughts?
lol, sounds like you need a change of manafacturer.
I have an S6 pre-order but after doing more research I think I'll cancel it, the lack of removable batt and expandable storage not to mention the possible need for two screen protectors front and back(OCD)no IP rating, no USB3.0(S4), its a downgrade from S5.
Camera is same as GN4, same ram, slightly upgraded CPU, smaller screen and all glass this thing is going to be very cold to the touch like Sony device, compared to GN4. Nevertheless I'll try to hold reservations until it is in my hand.

I don't mind a change in manufacturer, but I want to keep the same concepts within my next device: fingerprint scanner, high end processor, good build quality, lot of RAM. I also want timely updates too. iPhone 6+ has too little ram and a high price tag. Waiting on HTC's One Max M9 or LG G4 or Xperia Z4.

You sound like you need a nexus 6! Z4 is questionable because if SONY does shutdown smart phone branch it may never see any future updates. HTC max may be out around the time of Note 5 announcement so you might as well wait a little longer and get that. G4 I think is the phone that might compete closest to S6 IMO, and might beat it in terms of keeping sd, and large removal battery, unless they pull a Samsung!

It's too expensive lol. I am looking to spend no more than $100+ Note 4 money.
I would wait to see how the TW 5.0.x Lollipop behaves on the Note 4 and it should be out soon. I have the same dilemma about upgrading from a much older device (S4) and though I really want a new gadget I just can't justify the move frankly (except for the camera quality).

Install 'Nova Launcher' answer set as your default. It doesn't completely disable TouchWiz functionality but it has proven to be a speed increase and overall better Home Launcher. It's free on the PlayStore.
I've been using it since it was first released and will never use another app for my Android. Enjoy.

I will give it a try, but for now, I am waiting for reviews and to demo the S6.
This describes me exactly. Tired of laggy touchwiz. How could a beast of a phone loke the note 4 seem less than buttery smooth?
Temporarily using a z3 and it's smooooth, but camera is mediocre at best. Gosh darn it, I just want a smooth phone with a great camera. Hope that's s6
I'm not sure how you consider the note 4 a laggy phone. Go check the note 4 vs any other phone and you ll see that it's actually faster than the iPhone 6 And many others.
Once lollipop comes out for your note.. Put your xperia and note side by side and see which is faster.

Man I love the Nexus 6. If only it were 5.5", bigger battery, and better camera, it would be the perfect phone.
I have a nex 6 and I want an s6 after reading this forum and all the previews and reviews. My only issue is I had a note 4 and now the nex 6 and the s6 screen is almost a whole 1 inch smaller. Not a deal breaker but wish it was at least 5.5
90% chance I will buy it anyway

Anyone here switch over from the Nexus 6?

I got my nexus 6 last month when they were on sale but honestly it's just to big. It hurts the sides of my fingers lol. I know the processor is better than the 617 but I am not some benchmark guy who only cares about that. Also I am living abroad in Colombia so I can dump my nexus easily and probably make money since cell phones are very $$$ here. I already ordered 3 A9's, one of each color so I am deciding if I should keep one and sell the other two along with my nexus.
Any thoughts from some nexus guys would be appreciated
I'm not coming from a Nexus 6 but I do have a Nexus 5X and an HTC One M9. I'm not seeing any performance difference between the 5X and the A9. I'm also not really noticing much, if any, performance decrease from the One M9. A9 seems like a really solid device. Fingerprint reader is really convenient and is fast. The size of the device is great too.

I'm considering the A9 coming from a Nexus 5... The 5x build quality is meh and the 6p has that ugly visor that i can't get used to.
The A9 looks like a nice phone for someone wanting to move on from the Nexus 5. I'm used to a poor battery, speaker, and camera. The A9 appears to be an upgrade in the speaker and camera, and a push with the battery.
I'm Nexus snob, so I'm kind of waiting to see how the A9 shakes out, especially with ROMs

HTC One A9 or Nexus 5x?

I bought a 32GB Nexus 5X with the discount from black Friday and gonna receive soon.
I actually wanted this phone(the A9) more but the discount made the nexus really appealing.
Now, here in Mexico I can get a 32GB A9 for less than a Nexus 5x so I could probably sell the Nexus for more than I bought it and get an A9.
Should I do it? Are there any differences that could make the A9 a worse experience than the Nexus?
What do you guys think?
*bump*
Any opinions? I've been reading there are lots of problems with the nexus 5x, that's my main reason for wanting to get an A9 instead
Hope this helps
I'd go for it! or at least that's my opinion.
********Here's why*******
The htc a9 does raise some questions about how it's able to perform. But from experience, as in being an owner of the device.. I've come find that this phone is in fact fast and smooth. The battery isn't the best but keep in mind that quick charge 3.0 is just an update away!
Coming from a good old 64gig sandstone black oneplus one In mint condition (with Exodus and ak kernel). I still happen to own that device, although I've been using my a9 as a daily driver for a good month and now perfer it over the original, all mighty oneplus one.
Go for it!
I have both. I say get the One A9. I think the performance and battery life are better on it compared to the 5X.

My Nexus 5x arrived a few days ago but it was defective... I can't sell it, and bhphotovideo doesn't want to comply with Mexican customs so I can't exchange it for a new one without having to pay import taxes again
The 5X isn't a bad device at all. You'll love it.
Sent from my HTC One A9 using Tapatalk
My choice is 5x because it have super camera, and normal battery and modern chipset. A9 have too many compromises and a lot of questions about them.
I currently have both, and I'm keeping the A9. They're both great devices; it's all about what your specific priorities are.
The 5x will get you:
oodles of development activity, and a pure Android experience. This also translates to much better longevity.
An amazing camera
better battery life
better performance imo
the A9 gets you:
A great amoled screen.
A button on the front of the phone.
A phone you can put in your pocket. The difference in size comparison on Phone Arena is slight, but in the hand, the A9 feels much smaller than the 5x.
I prefer Nexus 5X since it offers a stock Android experience. The performance is also better as we all know it. These two seems to be a hard choice, but after I saw quality issues on 5X I would suggest you to go for HTC A9 since quality issues sometimes depends on your luck.
I do not know the Nexus, but the HTC One A9 is a great Device. I would buy it again.
Not sure if this will affect you, but you may have tethering guard block you from doing wifi tethering. That is my one regret so far getting the A9 of the 5X. I have been using GPE for the last 3 years, so I am kinda used to the cleaner interface.
I have and use both! Have had both from the first day they were available! I'd say it all depends on what is important to you. I have anyway been an HTC fan and love sense and good HTC hardware. On the other hand, since the nexus line has come into play I used the Nexus 6, 6p and 5x and I don't know that I can live without the pure AOSP experience that I can get from custom ROMS like chroma and PureNexus and custom kernels like Franco or Elmentalx or Elite . The make for make for unbelievable battery life and an amazing feature set. . Being able to enjoy custom recovery (TWRP) for full backup and restores and flashing new ROMS/kernels every night if I wish, No adds ever and more features than I can shake a stick at is slowly starting to trump out the HTC experience. Having said that, a more direct compare of the 2.... My HTC A9 is rooted and does have TWRP so I have some of the above mentioned benefits, but as of today there are still no custom roms or kernels, my 5x on the other had has Chroma with elementalx and I have every available feature I can imagine!! ( Even have the HTC Sense calender, music app, Gallery and a few others on it ) Battery life on my 5x is slightly better than the A9 due to all the things I can customize but the A9 has a very acceptable battery life, as good as my M9. Both have excellent finger print readers with the 5x easily winning on the amount of accurate reads but the front placement of the one on the A9 is SO SO SO much better and more useful. I totally love having it on the front. The 5x hands down smokes the A9 on processor speed. I can throw whatever I want at the 5x and almost never see it bog down or become unresponsive where as I can easily make the A9 lock up and become quite unresponsive if I use it hard. Having said that, outside of heavy multi tasking or gaming the A9 still delivers a very usable experience. When it comes to screens ppl will scream you from both sides and say that LCD or AMOLED is better but in this case the A9 clearly has a far superior screen to the 5x on every level. The screen to me is one of the biggest disappointments on the 5x. Build quality, at first glance the 5x feels plastic and cheap but after using it seems to become more and more durable and doesn't impress one as being cheap, but the A9 is a clear winner here. I love the build quality on the A9. Speakers, well lets just say the A9 is a far cry from the previous one series HTC phones. I don't like the A9 speakers, the 5x has better sound. All in all, the one thing that the A9 phone does well is that it doesn't do anything wrong.. It just works. It's not that impressive but also doesn't disappoint. The 5x has some very impressive things but also disappoints in some areas. and lastly, the cameras... Both are great!!! If possible the A9 might actually beat the 5x but both are great and far out preform any of the previous HTC One phones and the Nexus 6. I can provide any stats or photo comparisons or anything like that if wanted
What's up with the A9 and Verizon? Does it work yet? I heard only with LTE... is this true? While I rarely drop LTE at home, I do travel a lot.
I like the 5x, and am typing in it now. But man does the build quality leave me wanting a more premium device.
I tried the 6p but its just too big and cumbersome.
I really want an iPhone with Android! I was hoping the a9 would be it.

It is def your iPhone running android and it has a very premium build compared to the 5x, a much nicer screen and so on, but if your on Verizon your currently out of luck... I just got the 6.0.1 OTA and still data only on VZW with no talk and No text. It will always be an LTE only phone ( On VZW) as it doesn't have a CDMA radio but the plan is for Verizon to support it sometime in the 1st quarter of 2016 as an LTE only device. It's the wave of the future but I'm not sure VZW's LTE network is ready for it yet..
Verizon doesnt support VoLTE or the A9 does not? I'm guessing the phone since there is said to be a software update.
Damn, well, keeping my eye on this.

Pixel 1 vs. Nexus 6P

Hi!
I was lucky and got a Nexus 6P (64GB) and a Pixel 1 (32GB) for cheap.
Due to a broken battery (Nexus) and broken speaker (Pixel) I got two new replacements.
However, I'm not sure which one to keep.
Nexus is a little big, but cam and speed are fine and there are a lot of custom ROMs out there and also 8.1
Pixel is more handy, faster and maybe overall better (cam same) but no custom ROMs and in case I sell it, it will go for 200€ more than the Nexus.
What would be your choice?
I'm coming from Nexus 5
I'd keep the Pixel purely because it's likely 8.1 will be the last official update the 6p will see. Appreciate that if you are a custom ROM sort of person that might not be a big deal
