TrueCaller uploads our phonebook? - Android Apps and Games

I recently installed truecaller. I was satisfied with it but then a question raised in my mind: from where does the app collect the caller IDs. I installed the app on one of my friend's mobile & tried to search the numbers of my relatives which are present on my phonebook. I was surprised to see that he is getting my relative's nick names (As I saved their numbers on my phonebook) as search result. After searching on google I am preety sure that this app uploads the users caller ID as well as his phonebook to its server. Am I right?

Unknown people means? It shows it to all the people searching for the number.

It will show the details to the one who enters the numbers. Thats what tc is for.

It means that if anyone searches with the numbers of my relatives their names will be shown. Isn't it a great privacy concern?

Just think, who will search with the number? The one who already has the number will only search it to see who it belongs to yeah:? This is what truecaller works for, when someone calls you and you don't know their name, truecaller will show it to you.

You are not actually getting the concept of TC, bro this app is meant for this purpose.
Call receiving party has all rights to know who is calling them. or can search the number later to know who was it.

If you are calling someone or someone is calling you them its just a matter of picking the call. Then both of you will know each other's name. So true caller is just giving you that information few seconds earlier. And if its that big of privacy concern then uninstall it. Check truecaller settings. You can disable phone book upload from there. And its not that big of privacy issue. If you want to know other's details then be ready to give up yours. It works both ways. You can't just have everyone's info and not give yours.

Then tell me why service providers don't tell us who called me? Even if I give them the number they says "Sir, I can't tell you the caller's name due to security reasons"

built-in privacy guard is good in general. However, it just cuts off so some app crashes plus it is not as fine grained as xprivacy. But if it does your purpose, its good enoguh

use privacy app to block contacts access or uninstall the app. but thats how this app works.
let me again explain you why its not such a big deal.
suppose you have my number in your phonebook. truecaller picks up my details from your phonebook. now it useless to htem at thye moment.
but when i will call someone who has truecaller (i am calling him/her that means chances are they already know my name and if they don't then they will know after they answer the call and i introduce myself. ) they will be able to see my name before they answer the call.
but if they stop using your, mine and everyone's phonebook then it will be useless app. it will have no purpose or use.

with that app you have to add your friends manually. It can't read your XBL account and pull your friends from the list.
search for gsDroid in the Market. i use that. Sign in with your windows ID so no need to add all your friends

No, you can't send messages through it. It does still work if your friends have privacy settings enabled. gsDroid is by far the best Xbox live app imo.
don't get gsDroid
I have to say gsDroid may work really well and all but I wouldn't get it! You have to give them your Microsoft sign in information which violates x box rules for a good reason. That person would have access to your account and possible credit card info. No matter how much you may like the app we really don't know the developer and this could be an opportunity for that person to get your info and scam people.

Best Caller ID App?

What are the Caller ID Apps?
I am compiling a list of the best apps of each category, so leave your opinion and a quick reason to help out the community.
If the app costs $, be sure to say so!
I'll start off--pay app: Super Caller ID
can input phone number to get the name and address of that phone number (kinda scary actually!)

You already broke your own rule about noting the price. Super Caller ID looks to be $3.90
I've been using City Caller ID. I think they were C&D'd out of business, but here's the .apk. If I'm not allowed to post it, feel free to delete and sorry.
It does work great on my Droid X though.
If there's something similar (change position of indicator, change font, etc) and it's free and still gets updated, I'd certainly consider changing.
EDIT: I guess nothing wrong with posting that .apk in this thread since it's still here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=638318
Also, referencing that thread just so you don't worry about getting the .apk from an unknown source, now you have 2 unknown sources
the rule is just to label the pay apps and nonpay apps, so if the vote is for a payapp and readers go look for it, they wont be disappointed not knowing it was not free
i read about the city caller id, they are being sued. i take it they are no longer being updated?

Materials:
GoogleVoice setup and #
csipsimple or sipdroid
android device with data connection/wifis
ipkall number for free calling
Instructions:
Step 1:
Download SIPDroid from the Market Place
Step 2:
Obtain a google voice account
Step 3:
Launch SIPDroid and instruct it to create a PBXes.com account for you with your google voice account information
(attn:sipdroid cannot auto config pbx atm due to shortages so you will have to config your pbx yourself until the issue is resolved )
Step 4:
Go to IPKall
Step 5:
Go to the settings of SIPDroid and write down the first account information (should be [email protected])
Step 6:
On IPKall, put in the XXXX-200 for the sip # and pbxes.com for the sip proxy
Step 7:
Register your IPKall number with Google Voice (if gives an error ask it to Verify the information. It will then dial your SIPDroid software and ask for a 2 digit number. It might take a couple of times before it recognizes it.)
Step 8:
You are now ready to make calls and receive calls.
I will be posting some vids as soon as i have some time...

the delay is close to 2 secs.
I can't seem to get the IPKall number verified through google voice. I keep pressing the 2 digit code google tells you to use but she keeps saying "sorry, I didn't get that" then eventually saying "sorry that you're having trouble, please call back later"

Shame it's only US
Should edit title to say [US-Only]
Even if you manage to activate outside of US using a US #, anyone calling that number will be charged international fees (since its a number in the US) and you can't forward Google Voice calls to your own phone outside of US.

great. however you must setup your delay settings and use a diff stun server if delay or feedback is present. refer to my references under stun servers if this is the case for you. i notice after extensive testing that when im testing while both devices are in the same room, you will have feedback sometimes; however when i call my friends, fam, fiance, they dont hear it.

This is similar to what I am running on my Droid Incredible. I use Sipdroid, with a Soho Pbxes account and GV. In this config I can go internationally, and as long as I have a wifi connection the calls will be free, including inbound.
Guys, I'm moving this to Apps and themes as it isn' strictly ROM DEV

can you post more info on step #3 on how to do this? i'm lost at this point. dont understand sorry.....tyvm for any info
I have been using a similar setup for a while now, but minus the ipkall. If you have pbxes.org hooked into google voice, why do you need the intermediary number? And if you don't, how are you doing outgoing calls? Last I checked, ipkall was incoming only.

[APP][FREE] Call+ : Calls to REAL phones

Hey to all members here,
We have just released Call+ https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.call.plus
The app uses data to place calls anywhere in the world. It comes with a full free day.
To get additional days simply complete an action and get 24hours of worldwide calling on mobiles or landlines.
We created this app to fill a gap between Google Voice and WiFi calling.
I've been on XDA for 10 years (yeah!!) and would love your feedback on the app. We will make it perfect for you guys.
Feel free to post your feedback on this thread. I will randomly give away 1 month of free calling to interesting feedbacks or comments.
Of course, I would LOVE if you could leave a rating on the Play Store.
Thank you XDA and members.
@cizake kindly include Pakistan in call list.

Once prices will go down we will add it.
But the app is working from Cameroon. So your relatives can call you for free.

Suggestions
Decent first version release.Very good call clarity.Impressed
Few things
Call log / recent is a must to quickly access the dialed numbers
Under contact, editing a contact would be great (just to add the country codes if the saved contact doesnt have)
T9 spped dial would be great as a feature
Favorites must be capable of adding a contact from the address book rather than having to type
Contact pics would help find contact easily.
Serbia and Montenegro
Please add Serbia and Montenegro to the coverage list :fingers-crossed:
Does it work with cellular data as well or only with wifi ?
Maybe this is a good substitute to zeroapp. Going to try it, thank you!

Yes you can add a favorite directly from your contact list. Go to Call+-->contacts-->select a contact-->upon tap you have the option to call or add to favorite.
Contact pics not on the docket as we want to keep the app very light.

Yeah..Call logs are available but i meant to just click on it and i can call again so that i dont have to edit the country code if its not appended in my contact and also is there a way to clear the call log?
EDIT : I tried to add a contact to favorite as per your say but its not appearing under favorites section.A small bug probably?
And one more feature request would be to make the screen go off during taking and stay on the same screen instead of unlocking the screen and cutting the call post completion

Company Name to Display while Receiving Calls

There is anyway to show in the receiving calls more details from one contact (ex. company name)?
i Have the stock rom with the last update from oneplus
