[Q] Recovering data after root?

I'm about to root my new NS and every guide I see reminds me that the internal storage ("SD card") will be wiped - I'm cool with that. But since I'm unrooted I can't use Titanium yet to back up my apps.
So my question is - once I root, what's the best way to get everything back without manually doing everything all over again?

I see a lot of people say appbrain lets them easily reinstall all their apps after a wipe. Apps, but not app data.
Not sure how that works, i haven't tried it myself. edit: little google search revealed this on how to do it:
Without root, there's no way you're going to save your data that's on the internal storage space.

Yeah I just read some more about it - apparently it's just not at all possible yet, or ever.
Oh well better get to rooting before I have TOO much to lose.

Yeah, that's why I'm an early rooter on all my phones.
App developer's should be encouraged (or allowed by Google) to put their app data into someplace that the user can back up.
I wonder if the reason app data is put in a root-only read place of the device by default is part of the sand-boxing security.

Best backup before root
The only thing I really had to hunt for was to backup Angry Birds. Thankfully there's an app called Angry Cheaters that is both free and gives you save files for Angry Birds.
I just went through this process yesterday. Google actually saves most/all of your apps and will reinstall when you reenter you gmail address. It also restored my wifi passwords (in addition to obvious things like email/contacts). Just be careful if you have to wipe multiple times while exploring root that you let this process do its thing, it forgot a few apps that way. Thankfully appbrain had moved all of my previous apps to another list.
The only other thing I couldn't back up was some auto mileage data, so I just wrote that into notepad and called it a day.
Is there anything else you are specifically trying to get? I was really only focused on Angry Birds.

Hmmm here is a question/thought
If unlocking your bootloader whipes everything clean, would it be a possibility to run data harvesting apps on the device to get w.e data you lost back?
both on the "sd" and /data/data

I use an app called "rsync backup" ... it can generate a DSS key to install on your server of choice, and tell it to back up /mnt/sdcard/ ... the only thing it won't access on the USB Storage area is a folder called ".android_secure" ... but everything else copies just fine.
I routinely sync my phone with this app to my workstation at the office, and a system at home.

haha.. this is why i unlocked the bootloader/rooted my s right away, i didnt have any data to back up. makes it painless

Kinda wish i did this, but oh well.

[Q] Saving my data when trying different roms

I am new to Android but experienced with PC's C++ etc.
Anyway, a quick question. I bought a g-tab today. Immediately installed clockworkmod and TNT lite. All is good and I am having fun.
Is it easy to switch roms without losing my userdata (passwords, bookmarks etc).
I would like to try other roms and don't want to create more work than I need to.
Oh and the viewing angles are acceptable to me as the user

I have been using Titanium backup without any issue for doing it

Yes, Titanium backup!!!

Yes, use Titanium Backup to do Batch backups of Apps and Data before you try other ROMs. I also do a full Backup in Clockwork before I try something new, in case I want to go right back to where I was.

ok thanks guys. New to Android so getting up to speed. I must say very smooth process getting it up and running and tweaking it so far.
I noticed the slower boot time with tnt-lite but last boot it seemed faster. I think it was mentioned in the docs.
It might be interesting if there was a poll for which roms people prefer.

Your First boot is always going to take some time as there is alot going on in the background that you can only see if you are watching Logcat via adb. After the first boot, boot times should drop unless a large number of apps have been installed.

Titanium Backup is awesome, but would be nice if there was a big "Back up All System/Data/Apps" button on the main menu. That's pretty much what everybody wants it for right?

You wouldn't want to restore system data with Titanium anyway. This is not recommended especially when changing roms. Apps and their data are okay. I make full system backups with Clockwork and backup my apps and data everyday with Titanium. My titanium is linked to dropbox so returning from a repartition/reformat is easily done as well.

Since you have experience with this, is there a way to force TB to send the backups to my external SD card? Copying it there manually is not REAL difficult, but it is an extra step.

Not that I know of. Its easier for me to setup the free dropbox account and link Titanium to that. I have the same account on my laptop so it automatically uploads from my tab to dropbox and then downloads to my laptop

[Q] Switch to Skyrocket from GS2?

Now that people have had the device for a few days, I was hoping their to headstart could help potential switchers and as the SR doesn't have it's own forum yet so I'm asking here.
Newbie alert!!!!
I am wondering how easy it will be to move from the Gs2 to the skyrocket? Basically any recommended ways of moving my apps, texts, pictures, etc to the SdCARD and back from the SdCard to the new phone? Contacts are synced with Google Contacts so no problems there, my main concern is with paid apps, I'd rather not pay for them again.
Can I back up apps via TiBU and restore them on the Skyrocket? Or can I just reinstall them on the new phone?

Paid apps are in your google account as well, you will be able to reinstall all your paid apps through the market (without repaying) by just signing in to your same google account.
The only thing you need to backup is your pictures/music.

Here's what I did to migrate to my Skyrocket from my Captivate:
*Duh Alert* Have your original phone rooted and Titanium Pro installed.
Original Phone
1. Backup APK & Data with Titanium.
2. Locate where backup directory is on your phone. Mine was \sdcard\TitaniumBackup
3. Mount original phone and copy backup directory to your computer.
New Hotness
1. Root that bad boy. Search the site, its here.
2. Install Titanium Pro from market.
3. Back up 1 app, pick something silly. That will create the backup directory.
4. Mount the new hotness and copy your saved directory from your computer to the Skyrocket.
5. Restore apps. I did one at a time cuz I didn't want everything installed on the new phone.
95% of the apps and data restored properly.
Simplistic, yes....but it works. Go forth and multiply.

If you want the smoothest experience on your Skyrocket, do NOT use a backup tool to bring over apps, just reinstall them from the Market.
Copying apps and app date with a tool like Titanium does and WILL cause some issues.

To partially agree with you I tried using MyBackUp Pro and almost everything failed. That's what I deserve for buying that one first back in the day. BUT....Titanium worked great. All of my paid apps were as good as gold.
Plus, if you want your saved data, wouldn't you have to use a backup tool?

If your just trying to backup like game saves then sometimes. A lot of times that data can be backed up by just mounting your sdcard to your computer and copying the files. Some games do save the data in funny locations so you do need (easier) to use something like Titanium, but you are always better off starting from as scratch as possible to avoid issues later.
Moving an app to save you from entering your login info for example, is just a bad idea. Most apps have no real data to backup, simple 2 second settings etc....

i have found that most issues with TiBu are do to you trying to restore System Information......i used tibu to restore my apps on the Skyrockert. i just picked APPS only with out system data.
worked fine i have not seen a hickup on any device or install after a flash of new Rom.

TiBu works great, usually, for restoring NON-System apps and their data.
Avoid restoring system apps/data.
Also, if you do happen to run into a problem with a particular restored app, all you need to do is uninstall/reinstall it and then use TiBu to restore the "data only" for that app.
This has always worked for me.

Its basically the same phone, screen tiny bit bigger and it edges r round, and the. 3 faster CPU is not noticeable, and if u don't live in the handful of citys that have lte network what's the point by the time LTE gets fully activated skyrocket will be old phone something way better out, now if u didn't have the gs2 already if say hell ya but since u do wasted money IMO

I travel and never have a solid internet connection or have to pay for one. Is there a way to backup large apps/games to the PC so I can restore them after installing a new rom? I would like to wipe the device and start from scratch without having to re-download the large apps.

So, I've finally received a shiny and new S8 (Exynos).
And quickly enough, I searched XDA & Google to see if there's a stable root solution.
The main reasons I'd like root (& TWRP recovery) for are:
Topmost priority: to properly migrate my apps & data from my current phone (S6) using Titanium backup, so I can start using the new one as my main device.
Giving me the option to choose a custom ROM, when/if I'll find the right one for me.
You can never know when you'll need an app that requires root access.
Having the option to always have a full image backup of the entire device (TWRP).
Debloating the device by freezing/removing unwanted apps (freezing them with Titanium Backup)
I remember that I had to root my device in order to record phone calls (which is very important for me) - I'm not even sure what its like with the S8, but this could also be a reason to root.
After reading, and watching several videos, I understand that there are quite a few things to be worried about:
The chance of bricking your device, as the current rooting solution is immature (Is it? this one scares me the most)
Losing secure folders/Samsung Pay/Samsung Health, etc. (I'd hate to lose Secure Folders - but I'm sure that I can find alternative solutions, I'd prefer not to lose Samsung Pay & Samsung health, but I can live without them).
Losing warranty - not even sure if that's true, read here: https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/...iphone-rooting-android-does-not-void-warranty (Although I can live without the warranty, always rooted my phones while knowing I'll lose warranty).

Since I really want to migrate to the new phone, I've looked for options to safely copy the data without having root:
CloneIT: Didnt migrate the apps' data.
Helium: Apps were backuped, but couldnt restore them. many of my apps are not supported by Helium.
Smart Switch: Not even sure if it can migrate apps' data or not, but unfortunately - it didnt even run properly on my S6, once installed - there's a splash screen coming up, that vanishes after couple of seconds. I've read posts of other users complaining about this very same behavior. couldn't find a solution to make it run. it works find on the S8.
I googled, and found that there are a bunch of companies that sell complete migration tools (that require PC/Mac), did anyone check any of these, and can share a honest review?
None of them is free for use/download.

I've always rooted my phones, so being root-less is a bit new to me. should I just take the chance and root it?
Both Android and TouchWiz are quite mature now, allowing us to enjoy a smooth and slick operation - when combined with the powerful hardware the S8 is equipped with, right out of the box.
What are your reasons for rooting?
How did all of your migrate your phones? started everything from scratch?
If not - how did you migrate from your previous phone?
Is the current rooting solution safe enough? And if its not - and we'll wait until a 'safe' rooting solution is out - how can we keep our apps & data continuously (in my case: S6--> Non rooted S8 --> Rooted S8)?
Does any of the paid solutions I listed above really work?
Would love to hear your thoughts and advises.

I rooted my phone because I would like to customize my own phone as it is mine. DriveDroid, FolderMount, Titanium Backup, smartdisk, and so on. It doesn't matter how good a phone is without root, for me, it is garbage if I cannot customize it. Get a unrootable phone just as powerful as the desktop PC, and I'll find it garbage regardless of smoothness.

Well put me down for wondering if any of these without root will restore app data....
