Has anybody noticed a deterioration in battery life on the Surface RT since the last update last week. My battery seems to be depleting quicker since update and I am wondering if it has to do with some of the tweaks they did to the WiFi, in order to improve connectivity.

I haven't done any tests or anything, but I was thinking the same thing just last night. I'm noticing what is probably around 10-15% less battery life!

This thread isn't about WiFi, it's about battery life.
Right, I had read this thread when the updates came out and thought nothing of it, however this morning I woke up to 9% battery life.
I usually charge my RT every other day and would normally be on 25/30% at the start of the second day, however today I'm on 9%, thats a pretty big drop..
I've not noticed any other issues but battery life certainly seems to have taken a hit for some reason...

I think he's referring to when another post said maybe it was due to WiFi changes from the update

I think I figured it out on mine. I away keep Bluetooth off because I don't need it , and it improves battery life. The latest firmware update re-enabled it by default. I turned it back off so it should help.
Wonder what other settings it reset, as I have done alot of tweaks along the way and don't have a record of them.

Ahh, good spot, didnt even think of checking that..
I've noticed this as well, except I'm using a Surface Pro.
Normally when I hover over the battery bar at 100% charge, I would get around 5 hours, but now I'm reading a max of 4, usually even less!

I'm going to try this to see if it helps. I've noticed a significant decrease in battery life as well.
Do anyone feel that Surface RT performance is a lot better than it is as compared to previous update?
I somehow feel that its the CPU that's taking in more power...

My performance has taken a hit big time since these last two updates. It's not as snappy as it once was. I'm really ready to sell it and wait for the Surface2 to come out. I love everything about my Surface except the performance. Hopefully Windows RT 8.1 will make a difference, but I'm not sure. I think its really the processor where things are getting bottlenecked. I have an i3, i5, i7 Windows 8 machines and they all perform fine. Those aren't mobile processors, but either Windows RT is not ready for ARM, or the problem is ARM.

Thanks for this I guess its just a placebo effect on my end...
Another thing I noticed is that waking the Surface RT from sleep sometimes takes a couple of press before its back up after the recent update.

Goodnessssssssss Yes...! I hate that. I've never had that issue before. Which leads me to believe it could be RT, however, I believe this specific ARM processor isn't powerful enough for RT. My browsing use to be snappy, app launches were snappy, and I only had to click the power button once for it to come on. Now I have that same issue where it takes a few presses for the Surface to come on.

Me too. It's extremely frustrating. The Surface is supposed to be a premium device, but it doesn't feel so premium anymore. I've been shopping other RT devices, but I feel Surface is the best. I also want to keep my loyalty and specifically buy devices made by Microsoft.
Since the last update my battery stamina has slightly increased, I charge my surface every day normally, prior to this latest update I would have 40-50% battery at the end of the day after 5-6h use, but since the update I am ending the day with 50-60% battery.
This week I left my surface off charge from Friday to Monday (UTC+10 so yesterday my time) and I had 20% battery left with close to 8 hours usage over the period.
On the topic of performance like the last few posts mentioned, I have found that the every patch Tuesday update since feb has been improving performance a fair bit. I used to have the issue with sleeping and needing to press the button a few times and then it would go back to sleep while entering my pin randomly, since the April patch Tuesday update this has been happening much less frequently (1 in 20 wakes compared to the 1 in 5 it was before)
I've not had any battery issues, and in fact like the post above this one if anything, it's better. I keep forgetting to plug the RT into the mains and after a full day's use (this is currently my only PC at work) I still have 30+% battery.
Hi, I noticed that phones from lg, g2, g flex and phones from sony, tablet z, z2 all have double tap to wake. I know we have touch control and dt2w/s2w but what I'm worried is that there's the battery drain issue. Or is the battery drain issue fixed yet? Is it stable enough to be used as daily driver? Thanks.

It drains battery on those phones too (probably). At least on the Nokia Lumia phones, there's a warning when you enable that that says "this has a significant impact on battery life" or something really close to that.

I know they will drain battery regardless but I was just tempted to cross the line as i saw someone with touch control switched on but he had only 2% battery drain over 8 hours with elementalx kernel. Thats why I'm asking here to confirm what i know.

That's probably right. It shouldn't drain more than that. I had it on my N4 and I never really noticed any battery drain when using it. This was using the "nexus touch control" app.
I can confirm that Touch Control has no noticeable effect on battery life.
there will be some battery drain because the digitizer must remain on.
I used the DT2W when I was running Bricked Kernel. At that time there was a significant impact on my battery. I don't know if there were improvements since then cuz I haven't used it on any of the kernels I've tried since. I've never tried Touch Control
Just got paid touch control app. On slimkat and I let just install the stock modified kernel so it works.
Works great! Love it! I missed active notification on my Moto x and not having to use my power button. And now I can double tap to wake. Much better.
I'll report my thoughts on battery drain after a few days. Might try a better kernel too.

Well, night one with touch control installed I lost 20 percent over night in 8 hours. Coincidence? Touch control doesn't appear to be the culprit in gsam, but its all I changed. Gonna keep monitoring.

All I hear on any forum is good things about the Moto X, even people who comment on Engadget love it, and they seem to be very brand oriented people (apple, samsung) eg; (no removeable battery plus sd card= BUST) in every comment section.

Can I suggest elementalx kernel? they have a power button toggle for double tap 2 wake. which is useful when you are not going to use the phone for a long period.
Thanks for the feedback, hope to hear from you soon!
Hi
First let me say I'm a noob to this forum and to Rooting, ROMS etc.
I've just installed the latest Pacrom on my HTC One and love it! However since installing my battery life has taken a serious hit! I used to get a good 10hrs plus out of it through average use. The last 2 days though I've been lucky to get 6hrs.
I've tried installing Franco Kernel as I had read that was good for battery life. However, although it says it has installed, when I go to About phone>Kernel version, it simply doesn't appear there.
Has anyone got any recommendations?

give a picture of your battery usage in settings, if PACrom has Governors and I/Os you can mess around with those to find the best battery life/performance. i personally love to use Ondemandx and InteractiveX, they both underclock and stay at that frequency while the screen is off, saving somewhat battery i have used it on a few phones (some highend and some entry levels) the high ends had no problem with them but as i used it on my entrys when waking it on there was a little lag (im guessing for the CPU to speed up since it was at a low frequency) but went away after a few seconds it was pretty noticeable.

Go to Google setting/ search & now/ try to turn off Google Location reporting and see what's happen. It's good for battery life in some devices I've used. Just in case Google Now will not work, if you care about Google Now then don't do that.

So, I don't know if my problem here in particular is unique or new, but this issue started about a week ago.
My Nexus 5, is rooted, and running Cyanogenmod 11, (was) running with ART Runtime, and I was getting pretty decent battery life with the phone. Usually nothing less than 2-3 hours of screen on time, with pretty typical settings (location off, sync off, etc).
Out of nowhere, about last week my battery life began to be much worse. It'll drain from full to 20% in a matter of 5 or 6 hours, and none of my usage really changed at all. I'm well aware of the mm-qcamera-daemon, but according to my battery usage page, it still isn't really in use or bothering my battery life.
What could cause this sudden change? I'm here at work plugging my phone in half way through the day, when normally I can go about 2 days without charging.
I've tried factory resetting, I've turned off ART, I've tried changing the governor on the CPU, and many other things. Is my battery simply going bad?
If anything has a solution for me, it'd be a blessing.
Thanks.

If i was on your place I'd return it back to stock and see how my phone would react. Afterwards if issue has to do anything with hardware I'd unroot + relock bootloader and give it to my provider for a warranty and explain them my problems.

Hmm..
That's not a bad idea. I think I'll flash stock back on to it when I get home tonight. You know, I have insurance on the phone, but I was expecting to have to exchange it for breaking the phone's screen, not for my battery going bad. I hope Stock ROM fixes the problem, or hell.. maybe whenever 4.4.3 ROMs start coming out, that might do the trick to. I've been careful to take care of this phone, since I broke my Nexus 4 two months after I got it.
Thanks.

You're welcome. I hope that you solve your problem as soon as possible. If you take a look how your phone does with stock on your diagnose of a problem would be much easier and from than on if the problem was in software you can try some other roms and kernels. I personally am not really a fan of cyanogenmod 11 at least not for nexus 5 since I've had few bugs using for a few days.

Well, I really liked Paranoid Android for my Nexus 4, and I've had no issues until recently with CM11. :\
I guess stock is going to be my best bet though. I just really hope I can deal with the battery drain issue from mm-qcamera-daemon or whatever.

I've been using SlimKat in combination with Faux's custom kernel for a few days now and I must say that peformance is as smooth as it was never before, speed is absolutely phenomenal and my battery life is more than pleasing (around 24H + 3-4 Hrs of screen on time).

Well, that sounds like exactly I want. I'm not opposed to trying another custom ROM either. Can you PM me a link to the thread with whatever particular build you're using?
If it's efficient and up to 4 hours of on screen time, sounds like exactly what I need.
I'm more than happy to ditch my ROM if I can get better performance, haha.

KERNEL: http://faux.romhost.me/hammerhead/kk44/
I'm using non-ultimate version of the kernel which means that it doesn't support overclocking and I'm also using a bit older build which is very stable and works flawlessly for me.
Ah, great. I'm actually going to download it now, while I'm here at work. Also, does this particular ROM work at all with ART Runtime, because if possible, I'd like to continue using it.

It does support ART. I didn't try it on this ROM though so I cannot tell exactly whether it's working or not. You'll have to test it by yourself but I am pretty sure that if your phone doesn't have any hardware issues that you won't be disappointed with the performance of ROM + Kernel with or without ART! Hit thanks if I helped you anyhow
PS: Though since the ART is still in beta phase of development there is a possibility that it has caused you so much trouble with battery =)

Batteries Can't throttle. However the do degrade with use. You can replace the battery with ease.
settings -> system -> Advanced -> Developer Options -> System Tracing. Uncheck the Trace Debuggable Applications. Enjoy about 15% better battery life.
Make sure to have a before and after record of your battery usage, with same set of apps, and same pattern of usage over couple of charges (like 3-4 days), to see how this affects your battery life. So, don't just rush to make the change, measure it. Your numbers may vary compared to mine.
thanks for sharing, will give it a go.
Interesting. I'll experiment with this for the hell of it. Thanks.
More info here: https://developer.android.com/studio/profile/systrace-on-device
Is is only enabled if you enable developer options? Seems like an interesting switch regardless, less realtime debugging / tracing should lead to better battery I'd think .
Just for someone who doesn't know too much about this, what does this do? Is it okay to turn off? Does it actually enhance battery life?
Thanks! Testing it out.....my average SoT is between 5h to 6,5h.
Thanks for the tip. Trying this out now.
My battery life on my 3 XL has not been great lately. I used to easily get 6h to 6.5h SoT, but not since like December patch, I'm getting maybe 5.5h tops.
Anecdotally this seems to work for me, heading home with 85% battery instead of 60% despite similar usage during the day
I turned it off yesterday. I feel my battery life getting longer, thanks:highfive:
But I noticed my phone is getting some lags sometime
same here will give it a go
When I got my pixel 3 XL last year the battery life was pretty good it was never a amazing but was enough for me. But lately the last couple of months it's turned ****, and I haven't installed any new apps or done anything different with my phone since I got it. I've got it set up exactly the same way since launch.

The Feb update seems to have caused some more drain for me. Battery was fine prior to that update. I'm going to give this suggestion a try and see if it helps.
anyone can confirm?
I can't definitively confirm this is what did it, but I'm definitely experiencing longer battery life.

Yup, the Feb update has definitely messed up the battery life.
Thanks! I also give it a try on my 3 XL.
Up till now, my 2 XL gives always a better batterylife than the 3 XL, hopefully it will be better now on the 3 XL.
This actually worked! thanks!
Discovered that when I do this, I lose the smart lock, which sucks because I'm using AA Mirror to mirror my phone screen to my Ford Sync display. Had to disable this.

Explanation. I don't know for sure, but I can't see any benefit to a non developer having this on.
I'd be curious if it's enabled in the background, or if triggering Dev setting turns it on.
My wife's phone doesn't have Dev on, but mine does. Not sure how I'd do a battery test short of running a stress test of some kind with both phones.
Anyone have an inside contact who would know if turning on dev enables it? Would be illogical to have it running without that right? No benefit...
I'm on a brand new 3xl and battery seems great. I just came from a V20 though, so hard for me to know if my battery is great or good...
