[Q] Nexus 5 [What After Rooting?] - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Friends.
I know what could be done on iphone after jailbreaking using cydia. But from past few days I have been using Nexus 5 and decided to root it.
But I'm bit confused, what is next to customize my phone as everyone on internet claims that it gives us full access. Please share some of your knowledge.

You don't have to root to customise .... There are many apps you can install for custom experience eg. Nova launcher that I use is amazing for customising your experience and its a great starting point (but does not need root) but rooting itselfbdoes open the door to deeper more functional features using apps like titanium backup to backup literally every bit of info, app and all associated data ....and other apps like tasker that can enable full automation which allows you to do things like set your phone to unlock automatically when connected to your home wifi ...or silence your phone automatically during work hours etc...

Can install costum ROM .. can install multiple ROM's using multi ROM.
Try closed.. Google it
... Mentioning just a few

After rooting, I like to change the DPI (by making a simple change to the build.prop file). The stock value is 480. I like 422. It fits more on the screen.

technically, you don't need to be rooted to run a custom ROM (or a custom recovery). You just need an unlocked bootloader for that.

There are a lot of things you can do after rooting. I have the following installed: AdAway to block advertisements, xposed to customize my rom and apps, IOS Emoji here is a flashable zip I made: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B9UOVv2yynmYeUVWY0tJNGtBanM/edit?usp=docslist_api, install MultiRom to try out different custom ROMs.
Hope you like it.

I want to have Pandora on my device Samsung Galaxy S2 but at the same time I dont wanna root it ? is rooting required in this procedure. I believe rooting will void the warranty on my phone it is not even a week old ? So ideally I dont wanna do it. So by doing this will I lose the warranty on my phone ?

Rooting does void warranty but you can always unroot to bring back to stock to return warranty again. These are the steps you need to follow to get it working outside the US. Again, you have to root sorry. I can provide the apk but it won't help you until you gain root. You will NOT permanently void your warranty unless you brick your device. It shouldn't be a hard procedure.

Ok, First this apk file that you have given is this like an updated file for listening Pandora APP the same App which with its full features and functionalities works in the U.S meaning what I wanted to know is this is not minus some features right ? This is the same thing as people use in the U.S ? I believe the latest ver of Pandora is 3.1.16(105790) so is this apk file the same version?
Secondly If I wanna root my phone only and only for this purpose to install Pandora how do I root it for this purpose and how do I unroot it again ? to regain my warranty back.

Yes that apk is the latest version. This is the version that is found in the US market as of now.
As for rooting you may want to dig around here buddy.

Ok I had one question here now that I have the Pandora apk file, Once I install ORBOT then how do I install the apk file and install it where at what location in the phone ?
Thanks. It works on S2.
Just mention that:
1) ORBOT reboot my phone at first...
2) Cannot search the app in Android Market by switching to "T-mobile", "Sprint'...
Impressive, even after 2 and a half years the nodes are still working rock solid... Thanks a lot Safaraz19889
I've managed to find a modded version of Pandora's apk.. the modded version removes all ads which is good because less data will be used.
-All deleted ads and unlimited skips
-Now W / ASX of New Patch Skip, so now do not get a single break! And Zipaligned.
I'm attaching here, if anyone happens to want it.

Thank you very much Safaraz19889 for the trick!
Orbot is very slow. Do you have other faster proxy services?
Works all very fine for me on my SGS3. Best Radio!
Thanks for sharing guide and apk!
I couldn't connect anymore on these nodes so I looked for new ones: http://torstatus.blutmagie.de

[Q] ST26a uninstall uninstallable apps

Hate to post this, but spend sometime looking and reading different posts and site and need some direction.
OS: v4.1.2
Kernel: v3.4.0 [email protected]
Firmware: 11.2.A.0.33
Bootloader unlock allowed: No
Left the carrier I get the phone from and am on a different carrier. This is my first cellphone as I cancelled the landline since my mom passed and cell is cheaper and more convenient. Tried Titanium backup, but it stated phone needed to by rooted.
There are apps from the original carrier that were useless even if I stayed with them and just taking up space and can not be uninstalled. Example, Satellite PVR. I had added a couple of apps that I needed, but needed to go through and clean data on the phone since there was not enough room as updates were failing. Have about 200MB free now on the internal memory. Going to use the SDK to change the install location to 2 so I can move the apps and will probably install some app to force move some for them to the SD card since Sony does not support moving app to SD (did not know this until I did some searching).
Not really looking at installing a custom ROM as I only use the phone to talk. Besides each ROM has it's advantages and disadvantages and do not want to start messing around with what is currently working as one of the needed app (the reason I needed a smartphone) was not working and need coding work to get it to work on the JLo.
Thanks
hi,
you can't uninstall system apps without root permissions :/ you can root your phone using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2366577
rooting your hone isn't install custom rom or hacking system , it just give administration permission to you. like on Microsoft windows computer normal user & Admin user.
Also, one day you need to install custom rom for your phone, you can't do it. because "Bootloader unlock allowed: No"
however you can install stock based custom roms
Thanks. I read that post about rooting it.
The apps I am trying to uninstall are not android system apps, but carrier added apps that serve no purpose. The example I gave Satellite PVR is if you have as have a satellite system from that carrier and control it remotely (I am sure you knew that!). I have no satellite from that carrier so app is just taking up space.

Sorry, maybe I didn't make it clear. what I was doing is fully wipe and flash CM11 ROM for HTC one X from scratch, and afte rall my google apps abd data is download back to normal from server, and then I flash your mod WITHOUT WIPE. But I don't see any app or other mod inside the system after reboot. I check it with root explorer. So I think I do follow your step, right ? Do you ever try to clean-wipe flash from scratch and then flash your mod ?
i checked it again and it works without aby problems on a clean install

Check if you had system partition mounted when you were installing the package, if there weren't any files installed thetn this might be the problem.
@shiftyHungary did it work for you
Good Luck !!
can any one confirm that it works
Wowza...just beathed alot of extra life into my ZTE Awe. Lolipop launcher and quickboot dont work on my device, but i can live without them. Well done
Quick boot mod only works on official cm11 builds and some other builds like armv6 build but the quick but apk works on any android device
The app just force closes whenever I try to open it. We at the Awe forums on androidforums are running an unofficial build, so it makes sense to me the mod wouldnt work but the app is not as well. Again, I can do without. Everything else, minus the launcher, appears to be working.
Though I can't find any difference when running the "boost" command. What is it supposed to do exactly?
its apically for games
Well again I didn't notice much of a difference with or without running it. Real Racing 3, GTA San Andreas and Modern Combat 4/5 run significantly better than before the mod. I was able to even record some decent game plays on each with Rec Screen Recorder with only about a 10fps drop and minor lag, something I struggled to do initially. All in all, I'll confirm this works and have already spread the word to my fellow Awe users.
Many thanks for your hard work

[Q] S3 issues for simpleton! adblock?, stay rooted?

hi there.
having only had a skim through a few of the samsung s3 developer pages i realise in severely out of my depth here, so please take it easy with me
i have just bought a samsung galaxy s3 and it has been rooted. neatrom v8.2, android 4.3.
i went for the rooted option because i was led to believe that it would then be possible to use something like adblock or ublock [popup blocker] as i use on my laptop. i watch football on a streaming site so adblock [of some kind] is kind of essential.
it came with an adblock app installed but it didnt do the job, and i have since tried a couple of others and neither seemed satisfactory.
so what i need to know is;
1, is it possible to get an adblock type of app [google play store] that will do the job required.
if its not going to be possible to use an ablock popup blocker then will i really need or be able to utilize the functions of the rooted phone. should i just go back to a standard install.
so, my next question is;
2, if i wanted to go back to the original OS is this just a straightforward factory reset, as in accounts>backup and reset>factory data reset>
any help is greatly appreciated.

Google play has stopped support for all adblockers as most the the available (free) apps are advertising based Install FDROID (market) on your phone and then install "AdAway" using FDROID.
You should avoid a gactory reset when you're running a custom rom and not familiar with flashing your phone.
For get it back to stock you can download the original Samsung firmware from SamMobile
If you like to use stock Samsung OS, you can also root it easily.

many thanks... :good:
i have just installed fdroid, then from there installed adaway, opened and updated it, so running. i will check it out on a streaming site and see if it does what it says on the tin.
if it works fine then maybe the root will stay.
if not, then what is the issue with going for the factory reset. will it melt the phone?
im a little confused with the last bit, please type sloowwwweeerrr
i can get the samsung firmware [is that the operating system] from sam mobile [as in your link].
are you then saying you can then root the phone to use the samsung firmware, but it will still use fdroid and adaway.
this would have to be super basic for me to even attempt it...

You can install the stock Samsung firmware, root the device and install any apps you like. Adblocker for android are doing best with in app advertising. Most websites are spam free, too. If you need a really ad free browser you can try Firefox as it supports plugins and you can install the good old "AdBlockPlus" just like its used in your computer browser.
BTW
If you factory reset a custom rom, you wil probably just have the rom itself, not even google services or play store. As for a custom setup you "pick" all the parts you need/want and install it together using a custom recovery.

its not really the browser or apps that im so worried about blocking ads from, its when im watching football on a streaming site, the amount of popups for gambling an sexy lady that also try to inflict virus warfare onto you is just unreal.
i will see if the adaway will do its job. if not then maybe i need to consider other options.
thanks again. im sure i will be back for some more parental guidance :highfive:
i now have found out that every time i turn off the phone the message centre number restores to default [not my network] so unless i re-enter the number every time i turn on im unable to send a text message.
o2 are unable to fix it because it seems the root has control of the default functions and settings.

SM920F 5.0.1 to XtreStoLite tips and help please

Hello I just received a Galaxy S6 from O2 and this is the first time I've decided to keep my smart phone. I would like to install a custom ROM with less bloatware and snappy performance. The one that came highly recommended and I constantly see being mentioned on here is XtreStoLite.
My phone is SM-920F running 5.0.2 Somehow this is suppose to be the better firmware in order to go to custom ROM? In that case I'm glad mine didn't get shipped with 5.1.1.
Can you please suggest to me the best method to use to install a new ROM? Also I heard about KNOX, I don't mind removing it if possible or not tripping it at least. Another question I have is about Kernel. I'm not sure I understand this very much but do I just need XtreStoLite and that's it, or would I have to also get a new Kernel?
Why is there 2 different topics about XtreStoLite? One being called Deodexed?
If I dislike the ROM after few months and find something better, is it again as easy to switch to another custom ROM?
Thank you to all who are feeding me with info on this matter, I don't want to sound like I want stuff handed to me instead of doing my research, but I was hoping to gain some experience and tips while following your guides as this is my first time messing with Android and smart phones in general.
Welcome to the world of custom Android
I'm running that ROM in my phone and its great! You don't need to worry about a custom kernel, that ROM includes unikernel when you flash it.
If you root using CF Auto root or install a custom recovery then yes, you trip Knox. Its not a big deal and to get full customisation you pretty much have to.
Tripping Knox does mean when Samsung Pay is released you WILL NOT be able to use it, so think hard.
Odex means there is an odex file along side the apk for system files, an odex ROM is quicker to boot up and apps load faster.
De Odex means the idea file is part of the apk file so systems like this are much easier to theme (as you only edit the apk).
Basically if you're not too worried about theming then stick with odex ROM.
ROMs are very easy to swap and change yes.
Install a custom recovery (will trip Knox but it is mandatory if you're wanting to flash different ROMs) TWRP is good.
A kernel basically put it the bridge between your software and your hardware, it is the brains if you like.
Custom kernels allow things CPU over clocking and under volting. And lots of tweaks to boost performance or go the other way and help battery life.
A tip for a beginner: ALWAYS MAKE A BACK UP IN RECIVERY IF YOUR CURRENT PHONE STATE.
This will get you out of trouble a lot. So many times you'll flash something or twaek something that will cause your phone to not function correctly or boot loop. If you have a back up of your last stable state you simply restore it in recovery. Simple
Good luck and have fun!
Sent from my SM-G920I using XDA Premium HD app
Thanks I don't really care about Samsung Pay that's for sure. I've been reading more about the Odex and Deodexed Mod and you have it covered pretty well but I also noticed XtreStoLite Deodexed Mod has some extra features such as:
★ 5-Way Reboot Menu
★ Removed High volume warning message
★ Removed Increasing Ringtone
★ All 3 animation speeds at 0.5 at default
★ Disabled Mobile Data toggle warning at default
★ No auto SMS -> MMS conversion with the Samsung messaging app
★ Optional: Alliance Framework v.3.1 (by @Goldie)
★ Optional: Remove ongoing keyboard switcher notification
★ Optional: 3Minit battery MOD
★ Optional: Center Clock
★ Optional: Modded Samsung Camera app to run even on low battery
★ Optional: Modded Samsung Messages app (to disable screen on when receiving message)
★ Optional: Disable Scrolling cache (smoother scrolling when content is for the 1st time on your screen, but a bit less smoother after the first time)
Am I correct to assume these are not on the Odex version? To be honest I think they are worth it even if I have to deal with a bit of slowness no? Which version did you install?
One more important thing, you said you tripped your KNOX which I don't mind but in the guide it says KNOX fully removed! So which one is true? Do you even still have it?
Oh yeah and final question, I didn't notice a guide for me 5.0.2. Is there one or do I need to force myself to update to 5.1.1. I hear 5.0.2 is easier and less hassle to do this job.
Thanks again
p.s I'm planning on doing my custom ROM over the weekend so I better make my choice and right decision fast
