dumb question - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys... my s5 is getting a little sluggish.... doing a factory reset won't cause me to lose root or cause me to have to reflash a rom?... sorry, just so far out if the loop with this stuff... told you it was dumb
thanks

There are no dumb questions, only brainfarts, lol. You won't lose root or need to reflash a rom. When mine gets sluggish I wipe both cache and dalvik in recovery though, no data wipe. Makes things fast again. Try that first.

I really effed up my phone

Tried to root my HTC Inspire, did pretty good at that part. Then I installed a theme I found here (that said it was for my phone) and now can't get past the boot screen. I've done factory reset, data reset, cache reset, davlik reset.. everything.
Is there anything I can do to fix it?
EDIT: and no i didnt have a backup
I had a similar problem after installing a theme. Different phone though. What worked for me: Removing battery for a few seconds, then go through the whole factory reset, cache partition, and Davlik cache wipe routine again.
Ok, I'll try that now. Thanks.
Still the same... I suppose I should just get a new phone
if you can still boot, there's still hope
do you have a custom recovery? if you do, you can transfer a custom rom to your phone and flash it

No I don't
I guess it was my fault for trying to do something I wasn't ready for.. I was just so tired of looking at the same damn skins.
I guess the problem was I installed the Lucid theme without CM7 (stupid I know, I deserve this).

[Q] wiping cache and factory reset?

Haii there, i recentley discoverd how to flash roms, i do it almost dailey now, but i never clear dalvik/factory reset, can i get any problems of not doing those steps? cuz i always skip those steps.
Thanks in advance :3

Well dalvik and factory reset are two different things. Do you mean clear data/factory reset? Either way, yes everything needs to be cleared every time you flash a new ROM unless its an update to a ROM that allows you to flash right over. If you haven't had issues yet chalk it up to dumb luck. Luck that surely cannot last forever.

I guess its just luck then, i flashed many different roms, not updated :3
Thanks for awnsering

hahh, i done this stuff once and got boot-loop
I bricked it to, but that was just a stupid fault, i was on ics and tried to flahs back to darkyrom ;p, didnt work out that well

Synergy rom

What would happen if I didn't wipe before flashing? And do I need to flash the 12.2 kernel
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I'm not sure what would happen. It would probably be less stable or not work... You could always try it though.
You do not need to flash any kernel. Only flash LeanKernel if you want to. If you don't want to mess with BusyBox, I'd wait on the kernel.

From my experience on other devices when flashing ROMs and not wiping I would almost always bootloop. Again that is my general experience. I would assume there would be similar results.

I usually backup the current ROM first, then factory reset before wiping cache. I end up with good results that way. The only time I installed a ROM without wiping, it was unstable.
Well, I tried flashing it, and it seemed to work. This is without the wipe.. But the only thing I found incorrect was that the wifi notification didn't go away. That was an easy fix though.
Should the battery life be noticeably better?

Yeah I was kind of retarded the other day and forgot to wipe. I was greeted with a nice bootloop until I pulled the battery and tried again (this time the correct way) then everything worked great..
I haven't wiped for any of the Synergy builds and my phone is running great Running Imos kernel too. Awesome battery life from this thing
So.. Even though I didn't get a boot loop after flashing without the wipe... Do you guys think I should just wipe and flash again?

I'm by no means an expert on the subject, but I'd say if it's working then leave it be..

A wipe may not be completely necessary but if you do run into problems (FCs, etc.) and post a problem the devs or users are going to ask if you did a full wipe or not - and then recommend that you do one. In the end it wouldn't hurt to wipe even if you are fully functional.
I used to hate wiping all the time but with the proper backup applications it doesn't take long at all. I use Titanium Backup to backup apps and then also do in app backups for specific things like nova launcher, minimalistic text, and gosms,

Rom theme removal

Just a quick pointer here, I've seen a lot of questions regarding removing or uninstalling a flashed in theme with inaccurate or poor answers on how to do it with the most common answer of reverting back to nandroid backup and starting over. That will work, but is completely unnecessary and alot of time/work to do that.
Here's the simple easy fool proof way to remove a theme if you don't like it:
Go into recovery, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, DO NOT do a full wipe, re flash CURRENT rom zip, reboot. Theme will then be gone, without any reconfiguring of your setup. That's it.

Not that I disagree but how is this less work then restoring a nandoid? If they made a backup right before flashing the theme they dont have to reconfig any of the setup stuff either.
True, stated as if the nandroid was of a different rom/configuration, not just made. But who wants to wait all that time to create, restore a nandroid? I don't!

Also if you restore a nandroid you would lose a bit of saved data for say....a game or what not. (Basically if you've progressed in a game since you made the nandroid).
Reflashing the rom with out wiping data is the best theme removal in my honest opinion.
I agree, I do not wipe my data cache or dakvik, just flash the rom. I only stated to do those wipes so that there would be a "cleaner" flash of the rom, like flashing a nightly. That way I don't have to get flak if something goes wrong for someone, as unlikely as that may be.

By doing Factory reset your resetting all setting on your phone (clear cache and data] you will be on 2.2..its not downgrading
