nexus 5 cellular data problem - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear XDA community
I have a D821 device and since I started using mobile data I noticed that I was having a very unusual issue. I was getting only 2G and 4G signals with greek carrier COSMOTE GR & VODAFONE GR. Max signal on cosmote was Edge and when on 4G coverage 4G. On Vodafone I'm getting GPRS only. Any member had any similar issue and any solution to Fix it? Can it be a software issue or hardware?

I think that this is just about coverage and signal strenght of your providers.

My carrier works just fine on my z1 compact with hsdpa+ and 3G so that's what concerning me

@VER5Uz
Xperia has better radio then our devices. My son use XperiaU and he get better signal then me in areas with low coverage. Also my wifes N4 is better in this.

So it's just phones antenna not receiving good. Damn I'm on that issue over 2 months and I'm getting so mad having so slow speeds. Is there a utility to confirm if the antenna is not malfunctioning

Buys an LG device, gets crappy LG antenna lol

Change modems and see if it helps.

Desire S Call Issues

Hi,
I have a HTC Desire S which I bought Sim Free and am currently using a Vodafone UK SIM. I notice that a lot of my calls whilst on a HSDPA signal or even EDGE seem to be routed to voicemail even though the setting is disabled and I experience data blocks. Even though I'm shown I have data connectivity I cant use data and calls wont connect.
I was wondering whether you would think this is a SIM or a phone issue. I have had this on two Desire S phones and when using the SIM with a 2G only phone I don't seem to experience this problem. I'm in an area where there should be great indoor and outdoor coverage and the provider has no reported issues at the moment.
I think the problem is with network...
As you said with 2G you don't experience any issues...that proves the point...
I would suggest use only 2G (GSM) mode rather than edge...
until network improves...
Also that would give a better battery life ;-)
I too had a few calls go to voicemail when I should have had signal to receive calls, on t mobile uk, suspect that it's as the signal strength seems to fluctuate sometimes which I have seen, especially when using wifi And/or data.
Although not happened enough to be a really a massive problem.

Yes, like vampire36 said, the problem is in the EDGE & HSDPA network.
Try using 2G for a while with EDGE & HSDPA are closed for a few days then report back.
Hope this works out for you
I'm also on vodafone uk and I haven't had this issue, I'd say call the support line (as foolish as it sounds) as this isn't a problem I have had at all :/
But for the time being just stick to 2G so you can receive calls and such

Thanks for the tips. Vodafone have told me that there are 2 masts down serving my area so there isn't any 3G coverage and when I do very rarely get on HSDPA I experience data blocks because of the insufficient coverage. Even on 2G there are coverage issues because of these masts so now at least I know where the problem lies.
Has been an issue since February and this isn't rural countryside we are talking about but literally on the edge of the City of London! At least they've halved my bill till they sort it out.

AT&T Atrix2 in Netherland

Hi,
Any AT&T Atrix2 users in the Netherland ?
I've just arrived last week and I couldn't get a stable data connections. I know it's not a network problem because my friends don't have any problem. So I'm wondering if for some reason it's my phone (radio incompatibility maybe).
Most of the time it just won't attached to the network, other time it attached to the network but data is not flowing.
SMS/Voice call are doing fine.

Anyway, don't think that the problem is with the app, cause from time to time, I could have connection (a very fast one I have to say), but most of the time, no traffic are coming through.

And you have tried your connection from the same locations as your friends, who are also using the same mobile operator?
I use a SIM unlocked AT&T Atrix 2 in the Netherlands with no problems. I'm on T-Mobile NL and live in Amsterdam.
I have had problems with my phone failing to connect to a data network when I travel outside of the Netherlands, though. It'll get itself into a state where it won't send or receive data even with the "data roaming" option selected. I've always been able to solve it by rebooting the phone, but that's a crappy solution. Does a power cycle fix it for you?
recently ive been all around(Ger,Aus,Slo,Cze,Hun) europe with data roaming on, and i had data(and phone ofc)just fine where i wanted it. im with vodafone.
unlocked att atrix2
I think it might have something to do with the radio. Force my phone to 2G and connection is very stable.
Might be related with me living in Maastricht which is quite close to the border.

afaik the att 3g bands dont cover all the european 3g gsm bands, its rare but you might be unlucky... you have to see specs of a2 and your providers bands.

Some of European providers use 900MHz band for UMTS which not supported by A2.
So in areas without 2100MHz but with 900MHz UMTS our phone will not work in 3G .
What I find it strange is, when I'm on 3G, phone and sms work just fine. I got a full signal also. That's why I don't suspect radio problem.

When you're on 3G, it SHOULD work fine.
If you meant "when you're not on 3G," then that is still normal. Different radio bands handle different tasks from your phone - SMSPhone being examples. You can still be "on network" and not have 3G data connectivity.
If you take a trip to a different city in the Netherlands and your 3G works fine, you'll know the problem is with the radio bands your carrier is using/not using in your home area. If your connection is still bad, then you have an issue with your phone itself.
^^
that is correct. its not so simple as "sms works so data should too"
in this century less and less people are sending sms and calling, compared to the growth of mobile data usage. but the number of bands on the avaliable frequencies didnt grow at all. so networks adapt to it, different bands are becoming data bands, and small unused bands are becoming phone bands, and so on..

[Q] No LTE icon? (my N5 only shows H)

Hello,
I have been using the Simple Mobile $70 plan for unlimited 4G data. Since I got my brand new Nexus 5, I was wondering why I am not getting "LTE" icon on the notification bar. It only shows H/3G which means (I think) HSPDA+. This is weird since the APN is set to T-mobile LTE (fast.t-mobile.com). Can I fix this if I change the service provider to, for example, T-mobile (assuming Simple Mobile 4G is not LTE)? I heard some people are getting LTE icon with Straight Talk and some don't.
Thanks for your advice in advance!

it depends on if u have LTE service in the area you are at. For instance, I only get 3g service at my house , but if i go a block west of my house i get LTE service. Also i have noted that the nexus 5 have weak reception, some spots i can browse and make calls with my Iphone but at the same spot nexus 5 has no service.
And dont trust the T-mobile coverage map, its a bunch of BS. There are so many areas that I know of that have no service at all of any kind and are shown as great service areas on the map. Best way to find out coverage is to just go to different places ( indoors and outdoors ) and test it out.

You are right. The problem is it doesn't work in my house as well as on campus and in any Chicago downtown area. Maybe I need to try another provider? But buying a new sim card, porting, and changing provider are time- and money-wasting.

You should try using an att sim and see what kind of coverage you get. Att is definitely more expensive than t-mobile and you dont get unlimited data no matter what but i see no point of having and paying for a service which you can not use. Also you can ask someone else who has the nexus 5 and t-mobile how the coverage is for them in and around the areas you frequent, it might be a device issue.

My friend just told me the processor might not be compatible with the bandwidth that simple mobile uses. I also read some articles saying that LTE support is somewhat perplexing (http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/170166-nexus-5-excellent-global-coverage-perplexing-lte-support),
and that AT&T is fully compatible (http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/1...y-compatible-with-atts-lte-and-hspa-networks/). Your N5 is working fine with AT&T, right?

Nope. Simple Mobile is an MVNO that operates on T-Mobile's network. The nexus 5 supports all the bands that T-Mobile broadcasts on.
Does Simple Mobile even offer LTE? Because according their website they do not, but they offer hspa+. Which is kind of considered 4g speeds. No mention of LTE.

I dont see the connection between the processor and bandwidth. I have no idea what bands simple mobile uses but thats based on the radio of the device. As far as i know Nexus 5 supports 3g/4g(h)/LTE for tmobile and att, never used sprint so cant say.
Yes i got my phone from T-mobile and i just put my work att sim card into it, all that was needed was a reboot and it automatically picked up att service with LTE. Data speeds are great, getting 8+ Mbps with only 2 bars of service.
I do think that the nexus 5 have reception issues, the same att sim card in an htc one or iphone 5 gives minimum 4 bars but data speeds are around the same (+ 2~3 Mbps) but more consistent. With t-mobile, i was missing calls, receiving texts hours later and the phone was just hopping between LTE, H and No service.

Yes, I remember OOKLA test once peaked 14Mbps, so it's not just 3G. After some research, I found that Nexus 5 works with LTE bands 1/2/4/5/17/19/25/26/41 while T-mobile uses 4 only, Verizon uses 4/12, AT&T uses 2/4/17/29/30, and Sprint uses 25/26/41. Is it a good idea to change the provider to AT&T, or Sprint? Do they support porting in most cases? Thanks.

Actually there is a direct connection between the CPU and the bandwidth support because the radio is part of the snap dragon 800 'system on a chip' CPU.

I would suggest straight talk if you want LTE that. $45 a month. Order their At&t based Sim.

I never really looked into the SOC on the snap dragon, the radio modem being on the die with the CPU would definitely effect the throughput. Thanks for the link, I have some further researching to do

[Q] No 2g (GSM) reception

i know, most of us care about 3g and 4g reception, but my problem is the opposite one.
my Nexus 5 has no reception of 2g (GSM) cells. Already reflashed Stock 4.4.2 image. Still no reception.
Has anyone any other idea what to try before starting RMA?
regards
Bernie
Does your network provide 2g coverage? Mine doesn't. Just thought I'd mention it

Double checked with wifes N4, no Problem on 2g, just lousy download speeds...

[Q] D6603 POOR RECEPTION Bell Canada GSM

Hi,
I've been using my Xperia Z3 D6603 for about 2 weeks now on the Virgin Mobile (Bell Mobilily) network in Canada and the network reception is horrible. The signal keeps bouncing from 2-3 bars to zero bars wherever I go. My habits have not changed since using an LG G3 which I never experienced signal problems with. I think it's something to do with the phone not being able to connect to GSM and connects to CDMA only. I think this bc when I go to GSM only under network settings it won't connect at all.
What I've tried:
- Installed generic Canadian firmware
- Went to GSM only under network setting, and have NO Signal
- Entered Virgin's APN settings
Does anyone else have any suggestions?? This is such a nice phone and would love to keep if I can get the signal issue fixed.

Oh man, I really hope it's not hardware...
This might be a dumb question, but are you sure you have D6603 and not another variant?
