I'm looking into this as well. I'm trying out the "Nexus 5 Field Test Mode" app from the play store. Requires root

App installation was successful...However, it wasn't able to bring up any of the engineering/debug menus. No error was given, the app just kind of froze up every time it tried to execute a command. Hope we can find something that works. have you been able to find anything?
(edit) p.s.- The app says it required root, but never requested #su access

Where can I find Nexus 5 Field TestMode
Where can I find this program? In the market it is not. help me please.

Google have blocked access to it in 4.4 so the built-in app is no longer available.
Coming from CM10.2 I was hoping to at least be able to use this with my N5, but alas it's not so .

Wait... They removed the feature that they just added to the last version? Or they removed the old method of enabling it?

I believe they blocked the APIs used by the permissions editor which is why it crashes - but I'm struggling to find the reference I read that had this info.......
afaik they removed it completely. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47098228&postcount=2
One of the best features ever introduced to android and they remove it. Might even downgrade my N7 because of this.

I downgraded my N4 back to 4.3. Disabling app ops is terrible. Even apple has this feature: iOS alerts you if any app wants to access your contacts, or your photos, or your camera, and you have a choice to allow or not. Android 4.3 does not alert you, but at least you have the option to dig into the App Ops and revoke access to certain things. 4.4 is the first time an android upgrade dissapointed me (they destroyed the alarm app, the keyboard, the wifi indicator's activity/internet access, and App Ops).
App ops was never an official feature, so they technically didn't remove anything.

good god, why do the Googlers always have to find every disappointment thread to defend their master. Let me guess, you think the Google+ enforcement on youtube is awesome too?

So? It's still a feature they included, with easy access, and then took away even though it was nothing but effective for the users...

I'm with you on the users defending Google like the can do no wrong, but definitely disagree about the YouTube g+ integration... They needed to clean YouTube up, and now I can see friend's comments on videos more easily and only view the comments and responses of certain people... That was a good idea..
I think Google is completely wrong by blocking this app ops function, if that's what happened here...

Does anyone know where these preferences are stored? I'm mainly concerned with whether or not changing the options will affect an OTA update. If nothing is altered in the system files I'm sure we're good to go.
Sure do love having it again!

OK Google not launching Google now

Anyone else having a problem getting OK Google to launch gone now? It worked fine when I first bought the phone then stopped after a couple days. Then I rooted the phone and it started working again but then stopped after a couple days. I'm running stock rooted. I even cleared the data on the search app and it still didn't work.

It only works on US English but as the OP said, it did work before and he hasn't changed language so we can assume he is using US English.
It's an issue that I've seen crop up around XDA and Reddit and one I've had myself, so don't worry too much because I assume it'll be fixed in later builds. All that works for me is a reboot, then Google Now will detect 'OK Google' again. Try that.
"Ok Google" may disappear but feature is working
that's what is happening with me. I wiped the Launcher data twice to get back the "Ok Google" on the search bar
but it disappeared again and When I say okay google it works
A reboot definitely doesn't help. The only other time it came back was when I unlocked the bootloader and it wiped the device.

If the microphone on the "Google" search bar of the home screen is filled in, it is listening. If it is hollow (an outline of a microphone) then it's not listening.
Reasons it may not be listening:
A. An app has requested audio access (games, music, videos, camera, even if they're in the background). This is especially common with games that insist on running even when no longer visible. Swipe away the app(s) and the microphone will activate itself again.
B. Not set to US English.
C. Google Now isn't configured.
D. Hotword in Google Search settings is turned off.
Any of those reasons are common and considered normal functionality. If you can eliminate all of them then you're looking at something more in depth like ROM issues, broken hardware, etc.
The microphone is hollow.
A. It isn't a game or app because it doesn't fix with a reboot.
B it is set to us English
C gone now is configured
D hotword is turned on
I haven't changed any of the settings but I have double checked that the settings are correct. I read on Android police that other people are having problems with now but none of the problems are the same as mine.

Not sure if it'll work for you, but changing the language, back to home press the microphone and then changing it back to US seems to work for me.

So opt-out and then back in?

CoverMe Texting Application

Hello. I recently moved from the iOS platform onto the Android platform because I believe it provides a lot more freedom than Apple will ever allow. I used an app on my iPhone for a very long time called CoverMe, which is basically a texting/vault application that is encrypted and secure. The older I get, the less I trust those harvesting my data. I downloaded the app onto my new HTC One M8, but unfortunately it does not work. I open it and it immediately crashes, asking me if I want to report the crash to Google. It does work, however, when I am connected to WiFi. I emailed the developers about a month ago, but have received no solution. I'm not sure if anyone on these forums will be able to help, but it's worth a try. If attaching the logs/crash reports will help someone fix my issue, I can attach them.
Does anyone else have this problem with CoverMe, specifically on the HTC One M8? If you've come up with a solution, please let me know.
Thank you.

Just tried it and it crashed. You may want to email the app author.

I've emailed them on multiple occasions. A new update was just released today and I was hoping for a fix, but unfortunately it's still producing the same result. I'm going to attach the new logs in an email to them and hopefully that will help more.

I just launched the app in WiFi and it went through set up and everything. Try WiFi instead of using your cell connections.

I wrote about both of your suggestions in my first post, which you apparently did not care to read. I do not have WiFi at my house and therefore cannot use it on a consistent basis. Thank you for your comments.

If you want to get snippy, that's fine. But your original post only says it works on WiFi and never indicated you tried it on a cell connection. I was just telling you I got it to work.
Surely you visit a McDonald's that has free WiFi. Start the app there otherwise just deal without it. You don't have to be on WiFi all the time, just to connect to the app to accept the TOS.
Sent from my HTC6525LVW using Tapatalk
I was not getting snippy. I thought it would be implied I tried it on my cell connection, as I wouldn't attempt to try it with no connection at all, and WiFi is the only other option. I used WiFi to accept the TOS and create my account a while ago, but it still crashes regardless when I open it and enter my password on my 4g connection.

I've been using the app you suggested for a little while now and it actually works pretty well. The only issue is that it unfortunately does not have an iPhone counterpart. That's okay, it will suffice until CoverMe comes out with a fix. Thank you for your suggestion.

Yeah! Try it only for installation and to set it up. Once installed properly, I think that will work fine after will cell connection.

[REQ] Motorola Assist App Apk

I am fascinated by that recent updates of this app. I know Tasker can do a lot of the things that it does but I'm still interested in trying it. I found the apk on that moto G thread but I couldn't get it to work on nexus 5. Does anyone know a work around to use this app on nexus 5?

I too am very interested in this app. My guess is that it ties into the framework + maybe some other apks. My Google-fu has found nothing on the status of a port.

Has anyone a good experience with an app like Agent? How's battery life with it?

Chrome shows Wiki app is installed

Hi,
Since some update ago, not sure which one, my chrome browser shows that I have Wikipedia app installed when I don't actually have it. I don't know where to even begin to troubleshoot this issue other than add and remove the wiki app.
Attached are some snapshots of the issue.
Your help is really appreciated it, thank you.

Exact same problem on my Nexus 4. I even did a factory reset and the association came back!
Anyone out there with new information?

Before updating to the newest chrome, clearing data in privacy fixed it; but that's not the case anymore. I DID find out that it seems to be linked to my google account. Logged out of chrome, the association went away. Logged back in, repeat the same search, and it's back.
