OK Google not launching Google now - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone else having a problem getting OK Google to launch gone now? It worked fine when I first bought the phone then stopped after a couple days. Then I rooted the phone and it started working again but then stopped after a couple days. I'm running stock rooted. I even cleared the data on the search app and it still didn't work.

It only works on US English but as the OP said, it did work before and he hasn't changed language so we can assume he is using US English.
It's an issue that I've seen crop up around XDA and Reddit and one I've had myself, so don't worry too much because I assume it'll be fixed in later builds. All that works for me is a reboot, then Google Now will detect 'OK Google' again. Try that.

"Ok Google" may disappear but feature is working
that's what is happening with me. I wiped the Launcher data twice to get back the "Ok Google" on the search bar
but it disappeared again and When I say okay google it works

A reboot definitely doesn't help. The only other time it came back was when I unlocked the bootloader and it wiped the device.

If the microphone on the "Google" search bar of the home screen is filled in, it is listening. If it is hollow (an outline of a microphone) then it's not listening.
Reasons it may not be listening:
A. An app has requested audio access (games, music, videos, camera, even if they're in the background). This is especially common with games that insist on running even when no longer visible. Swipe away the app(s) and the microphone will activate itself again.
B. Not set to US English.
C. Google Now isn't configured.
D. Hotword in Google Search settings is turned off.
Any of those reasons are common and considered normal functionality. If you can eliminate all of them then you're looking at something more in depth like ROM issues, broken hardware, etc.

The microphone is hollow.
A. It isn't a game or app because it doesn't fix with a reboot.
B it is set to us English
C gone now is configured
D hotword is turned on
I haven't changed any of the settings but I have double checked that the settings are correct. I read on Android police that other people are having problems with now but none of the problems are the same as mine.

Not sure if it'll work for you, but changing the language, back to home press the microphone and then changing it back to US seems to work for me.

I cant even activate Google Now cards! Also a lot of the settings are missing on the google search app. My language is set to US but i think google is blocking it here in my country
On my Note II i had it working fine!

The first picture is from clearing the cache and uninstalling all app updates. The second picture is the first page after activating Google now.

Have you tried turning Google Now off and then back on?
So opt-out and then back in?

(Solved) Google now launches browser

Every time I ask Google now, like "what's the weather today", it almost responses a result and a voice answer when suddenly the browser launches and gives me a Web search.
I installed chrome and none of the settings has been modified.
So, could anyone have a solution?

Google Now on cm10

I was wondering why my version of Google search doesn't include Google now (with the cards). I have a nightly of cm10 installed with the 10-11 gapps.
My friend has a full version with cm10 on an HTC phone. Is it just the current development of cm10 on the s3 doesn't support the cards?
Thanks
It has google now. You must have messed up. Check the settings in the google search menu. You might not have opted in yet
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
I've actually noticed this as well. I can make a card come up if I search for like local weather but there's no place to set locations or favorites and cards never randomly come up for me
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
You have a nightly with gapps that are a month old? That could be your issue. If you're running a month old rom, then you most definitely will be missing features. I'd advise you to update your rom, and also you can update google search from the play store as well.
Google now updates through the play store. That isn't the problem

No, I think you misunderstood me. I am running the 11/7 nightly of CM10 with the 10/11 version of gapps. As far as i can tell the 10/11 gapps are the most current on goo.im unless I'm missing something.
Also apparently it asks you to opt in to the Google Now service when you first launch it, but I never remember getting that
If you tap on the microphone on the search widget you will be directed to the search app. In there hit the menu button to go to settings. Now turn on Google Now.
I get voice, search, and privacy settings. No obvious settings in any of them that would fix the issue

Open up Google Now -> Settings -> Google Now -> Make sure it's turned on (top right corner), and if it is, go into each category you need and make sure each is turned on as well.

I'm running VBRLJ1 leaked ROM and it appears I only have Google Search. I see nothing about Google Now anywhere. I've gone through all location settings, web history, etc.. it's all open for google to track me.
I also only get cards when I search for things. No option to "see more cards" or "see sample cards".
Basically I don't have Google Now and this surprises me. Anyone know of a fix for the leaked VBRLJ1 folks? I'm unrooted at the moment.
Thanks.
Same here on CM10. I'm beginning to think it's my university gapps account that is the problem. What kinds of Google accounts do you guys have?

If you just push the widget you won't get cards. Press the blue Google search app in the drawer. Then answer the 4 questions and opt in to it
Thanks for trying but that's the whole problem you never get the option to opt in and you never get the questions. I've tried full data wipes and the option just never comes up

Use titanium to uninstall the current Google search. Reboot. And install the one from the market

Google have blocked access to it in 4.4 so the built-in app is no longer available.
Coming from CM10.2 I was hoping to at least be able to use this with my N5, but alas it's not so .

I believe they blocked the APIs used by the permissions editor which is why it crashes - but I'm struggling to find the reference I read that had this info.......
afaik they removed it completely. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47098228&postcount=2
One of the best features ever introduced to android and they remove it. Might even downgrade my N7 because of this.

I downgraded my N4 back to 4.3. Disabling app ops is terrible. Even apple has this feature: iOS alerts you if any app wants to access your contacts, or your photos, or your camera, and you have a choice to allow or not. Android 4.3 does not alert you, but at least you have the option to dig into the App Ops and revoke access to certain things. 4.4 is the first time an android upgrade dissapointed me (they destroyed the alarm app, the keyboard, the wifi indicator's activity/internet access, and App Ops).
App ops was never an official feature, so they technically didn't remove anything.

So? It's still a feature they included, with easy access, and then took away even though it was nothing but effective for the users...

I'm with you on the users defending Google like the can do no wrong, but definitely disagree about the YouTube g+ integration... They needed to clean YouTube up, and now I can see friend's comments on videos more easily and only view the comments and responses of certain people... That was a good idea..
I think Google is completely wrong by blocking this app ops function, if that's what happened here...

[Q] OK Google on lockscreen

I thought I remembered reading that OK Google should work even on your lockscreen if you use slide and from any other screen as long as your device is awake but it only works on my home screen or Google now... An I just wrong or is something wrong with my device?

Nothing wrong with your device.. This feature is enabled only for US devices.. Although there may be a workaround to activate it on your device I heard.. I'm from India and this feature does not work on my phone

Its not from where you buy it. Its what carrier you are connected to and what is your primary email id on device. If your email id has address/postal code of outside of us then your device is not consider as us device

I have the US version and live in the US and "OK Google" does NOT work from the lockscreen. It only works from the homescreen or Google Now as OP has stated.
Pretty sure it's only supposed to work from the Homescreen where the microphone symbol is present. Confirm/deny?
Actually now that I look it up on all the reviews it says on home screen or Google now... But I remember reading a while ago saying unlocked out lockscreen without password... Whatever.
If it worked on the lockscreen though that would be awesome... So much more useful

OK Google in India
You can still use the feature.. Don't worry..just follow these simple steps:
Menu>settings>language & input
Change the language to English (US).
Now just go back to your home screen.. And say 'OK google'
Worked for me and my friends..
Cheers!!

clear z cache... or maybe you have to much contacts..
For me it opens slowly from the lockscreen (left-to-right swipe), otherwise its pretty fast (from a homescreen shortcut)...
Yeh I have the same thjng, let's see if wiping the cache will help.
I have the same problem, it drives me nuts... thinking about going back to 4.4.4.
Seeing the same thing on N5 Lollipop. I'm also using Google Voice for all calls--maybe related to that?
The phone dialer indeed starts slower on Lollipop (in comparison with KitKat)..
