Android.Counterclank infecting 5 million users ?

A massive Android malware campaign may be responsible for duping as many as 5 million users into downloading the Android.Counterclan infection from the Google Android Market.
A list of infected Apps here
Now the question would be to have a antivirus ! With all the Mods and root access..
Which one would the XDA community suggest ?
Turns out they were wrong...

NO!!!!!
As of windows7 the antivirus market for the PC has dropped, as windows now offers FREE antivirus for their system... So now antivirus companies need another lucrative market and they have been aiming at android ,using a very aggressive FUD campaign to boost their sales, and catch the unsuspecting and unknowing user in their trap.... In the end (and some hate hearing this ) its up to you.... from the list provided, it is my opinion that IF these were Trojans (and they are NOT.. the guy before me has a link that says they are not ) ,THEN any one who did download these would deserve the end results .... but such is not the case ...
In the end, the best advice is this
1... watch what you download ...
2... don't get trapped by antivirus companies FUD schemes ...

Antivirus apps can be helpful in guarding against malware by checking if apps are sending your data out etc but your right that as of new windows antivirus companies are going to really push whatever big customer market they can with scare tactics, that market is android because its big and has many users who can be easily persuaded with such stories.
To their credit lookout turned round and showed symantec were simply including add supported apps. As many apps use ads if you claim them as viruses then you get a huge amount of "infected" systems that in reality are not infected with anything.

Well the super user app is your best friend for now, till they figure out a way to bypass it ...... Again paying attention to what download on your unit is very important.....
ALSO if you grown up enough to have, as they say, 'all my important info on my phone', then you should be grown up enough to know that if you download an app called sexy girls puzzles, for FREE, there might be a possibility that it may contain something that, might be a danger to my important info .... This is just my opinion .......!
There was a test about antivirus solutions in november:

Can any rom have Trojan viruses?

I was wondering with all these reports on Chinese hackers. Can we be vulnerable to malicious roms. I know that some apps in the play store can be malware.
Is it possible that a Trojan virus may be hidden in a popular rom. Like maybe miui? Or other roms floating around on the web.
Here's one example of a popular game with Effed'up agendas.
http://bit.ly/HA4JwI Angry Birds? You'll be FURIOUS - fake game infects Android handsets and lets foreign cyber-criminals ... #MailOnline.
I starting to wonder all this when I had people hack me personally and steal banking information. Also my girls email account was being logged in by some one in China.
If any one has some real insight and professional knowledge of this. I would love to hear any input that might be helpful.. since I'm always flashing roms.

Not an expert, but definitely!
I'm not an expert, but I know that definitely the answer is yes.
A couple of months ago, there was a linux desktop OS that claimed to be made by the hacktivist group "Anonymous" that was filled with trojans and malware. Here is the article from Tom's Hardware.
Therefore, I don't see how flashing custom ROMS is any different. Just like you posted with the angry birds virus, a developer could easily put programs or scripts into a ROM that could do the same. However, the key thing is only flashing the trusted sources. I really only trust this website and don't go to any others Also, I always review and study everything I flash to my phone. I read what the developer says and the feedback from other users.
Hope I helped a little!
I think we should not use roms from china. They are not to be trusted. We should have all Telecom stuff made in USA to protect USA national defense. But then again the USA govt has back doors into our devices that we don't know about.... yet.

[PETITION]Spice to release kernel source|GPLViolation|

Dear all members,
As you all probably know about a popular brand in India which manufactures Android devices. It is SpiceMobiles.Inspired by the petition signed against Karbonn Mobiles Petition i also thought to do the same.
This brand has been consistently rejecting to release kernel sources for any of their android devices which is direct violation of GNU GPL v2. And as a consequence of which we senior members have initiated a petition in order to get the sources released so we members/developers can utilize the full potential of these devices.
I request all the persons to sign this petition whether they are Spice or NON-Spice users to please support us by signing the petition at Change.org

I also request you all please send this letter to Spice over HERE
Requester: Enter your name.
ID (E-mail): Enter your email address.
Country: Select your country.
Inquiry Type: Select "Request for Kernel Source Codes".
Model: Enter "Your Phone Model No and name".
Message:
Dear Spice,
We, the development community, are striving very hard to achieve that objective. Many users of Android based Spice devices want to make the phones released by you truly inspirational and surpass any competition. These powerhouses will achieve its true potential only when the development community get the source code of their kernels
It not only benefits the end user but will also be highly beneficial for Spice in the long run, as these customers will then get utmost satisfaction with their device and will then help in the word-of-mouth publicity of Spice products all over the world.
A truly inspirational product is born when it inspires the masses and is able to mesmerize the entire world. With great phones like Spice Horizon and , we are witnessing a paradigm shift in the mobile industry and need your little help in making this turning point even more monumental.
Besides this, not releasing the sources is a direct violation of GPLv2. It is mandatory for every brand to release the kernel source code for every device they launch.
We hope we will not be disappointed by a customer centric company like yours. Hoping for a positive response.
Warm regards,
A true Spice fan

Any reason why it would be in their favor to withhold the sources? I'd like to hope they're doing it for a rational reason.

The OP header is pretty misleading. It says Malware shipped with Mi4i, where as the story reported in the link says a different think. They say, it was not shipped from the manufacture. Also, it was from the devices used by two companies.
And as mentioned there, the nature of the infection, the variety of handheld manufacturers and models, I think, someone in that company sent a malicious link and every one clicked on it...

smartphones security

hi guys
i've heard some months ago, about how arab countries are spying on their citizens through their phones, the most strange information was that they were using a software capable to introduce any phone only by its number, at that time i didnt believed such thing, yesterday major news portals confirmed this information, i just have one question, how they do that ?! something like bruteforce from a satellite ???
from reuter article :
The attacks utilized a cyber weapon called Karma. As Reuters reported in January, Karma allowed Raven operatives to remotely hack into iPhones by inputting a target’s phone number or associated email address into the attack software. Unlike many exploits, Karma did not require a target to click on a link sent to an iPhone, they said. Apple declined to comment.

As far as I know, it takes advantage of a flaw in Apple's iMessage system
Sounds like an app exploit...
