i sold the htc one just in time. the htc one plus has just been announced.
i am going to miss that phone for sure.
well lets move to the maxx. right off the bat i accidently updated the os. setup the nokia hands free charger and loaded up foxfi.
i have been reading up on these forums for awhile can someone please answer me
is 4.4 unrootable for sure. i am reading some mixed answers from this forum. if so which technique do i use?
is foxfi working on 4.4 or some alternative? if so what programs
i am unsure is the bootloader unlocked? and are roms, kernals, and bootloaders replaceable? again how>
No root for 4.4 just yet. Bootloader is locked on non-developer phones, and no big ROM action at all. When/if 4.4 pre-root fxz, or root exploit comes out, THEN will we see ROMs
fat-fingered and Maxx-ed out.

I have a quick question about the Verizon variant of the HTC One M8. I just received my HTC One from Verizon. I quickly set to rooting and gaining S-Off. I was able to use Firewater and Weaksauce to gain root and S-Off really easily. Now, I am looking into flashing a different ROM, and here is where I am getting confused. I am wanting to use an AOSP ROM. However, there are very few AOSP builds in the Verizon HTC One forum. I did a bit of digging and I found that Cyanogenmod merged their releases into one device, uniquely named m8. So, my question: Will ROMs developed for just the HTC One M8 work for my Verizon M8? I don't want to flash a ROM and end up screwing something up (of course, I have made a stock rooted backup, but knowing my luck, something will happen and I will be SOL).

It MUST say that it is compatible. Some roms say "for all variants" which means all versions of the phone.

Wow, you're quite lucky to gain Firewater with a brand new device this late after it being fixed on new M8's. To answer your question, not all ROM's developed for the non carrier M8 will work on the carrier M8's (Verizon in this case), some will such as Cyanogenmod but not all. Usually the developers will say whether or not your carrier version (Once more, Verizon in this case) is compatible with their ROM, sometimes they don't but you can almost always find out by reading further into the thread as almost always someone else has asked. Oh and thank you's to @Quadrider10 for this part here(about it saying it's compatible), usually if it doesn't say it is compatible then it isn't but as I said you can always confirm it via replies to the thread or asking yourself.
Onto Cyanogenmod in specific, yes it will work perfectly on your device. I've personally tried it myself and honestly it is quite stable to be a "nightly". Anyways yeah it works and you'll be fine, just as always insure you have a working backup just incase.

You have no idea how shocked I was that it worked. I installed Sunshine and it took me to the payment screen, so I thought I would give it a shot. Took about two minutes and it threw up that beautiful "You are now S-Off" message. Reboot to bootloader and sure enough, it worked. It did prompt me to update on my first boot, but I declined it. I am assuming I either got old stock or Verizon was just being extra lazy.
Anyway, thanks again for the quick responses. Going to give CM11 a shot!
All the guides on rooting need Sunshine, and I don't have $25. I'm wanting to root my Verizon M8 so I can use Xprivacy and perhaps give custom ROMs a go. They took Firewater down, so I can't attempt to use that. I'm up to date on my firmware, so I may have screwed myself there, but I didn't plan on rooting at the time. Please help.
From my understanding, this is considerably more complicated than rooting a RAZR. With that I just ran RAZR Blade and presto. With this it's saying I need to root, use S-Off to unlock boot loader for custom ROMs, and flash a ROM. Please help clear it up for me. I'm pretty confused.

The only way to install a custom rom would be to utilize sunshine. JCase and Beaups are the creators of sunshine. Their tool costs $25 if you want to use it. Fortunately, installing custom roms is not a necessity so you do not have to fork $25 unless you want custom roms.

I don't need custom ROMs at the moment. Maybe in the future I can afford it and I'll just hold off on upgrading to Lollipop until I just flash it already modded from here.
I mainly want things like Xprivacy and Reaver. What do I need to root it just to the point where I can do that without enabling the custom ROMs?

Sorry man....unless you are on really old firmware rumrunner is no go. You can't downgrade either without s-off. I dont believe it ever worked on the m8 TO BE honest either v
Htc dev is blocked for vzw.
If you are on vzw and on 4.4.2 or newer don't waste your time. There's nothing out there but a huge waste of time.

Crap. I guess I'll just get Sunshine when I can afford it. I'll hold off on upgrading to Lollipop when it comes out to ensure there are no issues with that as well.
Thanks for your help.

Got new VZW M8 with 4.4.4. Sunshine is no joy. After fooling around for a week with Weaksauce2 and SS, I do have TempRoot, Superuser (no updated binaries), and BusyBox. Titanium backup works so that's a plus but Xposed will not load. WiFi tether works so the phone is so-so other than the unwritable SD card issue with 4.4.4.
BIG QUESTION is what can I do to assure this does not update while I am not looking?
I'm on 4.4.2 paypal dosen't work in my country :crying:
too bad there's no way to unlockbootloader and s-off

Beats me. I ran it as soon as I got the phone before I put a SIM in and before it was activated. Tried with Weaksauce2 too. I understand that some VZW M8 with 4.4.4 won't take it so I'm waiting for 3.0.
When did you do your M8? i got mine 2/6.

It works for some 4.4.4, others it doesn't. It's the luck of the draw.
I lucked out being able to use sunshine without flaws. After thinking about it, $25 ain't bad, considering all that you get for it.

I want to root, not to be s-off, just root to fix the thetering wifi and install my titanium backup app. It woul be nice to be an s-off to flas a custom recovery and flash custom roms but for now I just need to root my phone but I dont know how. Sunshine ask me for a Root, and when I search to root all post says that I need Sunshine so, I dont know what to do, tried with weaksouce and it freezes and dont work. What can I do?

Hello, I'm a little new the website but I've lurked around before. I've run out of ideas and don't want to break anything. I've recently temp rooted my HTC One M8 and would like to unlock the bootloader and S-Off so I may load a custom rom. I've done this once before on an older android device but with this one I simply cannot do it. Can anyone provide a tutorial on how I should go about this? I understand firewater no longer exists and I dont really want to pay for sunshine unless I have to. Also, my phone is running 4.4.4

Running a HTC M8 on 5.0.1 and I have searched but have been out of the rooting business since my S3. Can it be done? If so, can someone please direct me to the appropriate links? I started to follow the sticky and got to Sunshine and it said no-go. Would love a stock GPE Rom installed on my phone. Any help would be appreciated!

Unfortunately, the sunshine app is your best bet but you (and I) need to wait for it to be updated. There is another method, but it would require you to find someone with a java card. You can find more info about the java method in the forums. I thought about it, but i'm going to try and hold out for an updated sunshine app, hopefully it comes out before our next Verizon update so that any possible exploit is not blocked by verizon..
But until we get root, there are a few things you can do. There is the Google launcher or the Nova launcher, Adblockplus works on WiFi and there is also the Adblockplus browser for when you are not on WiFi, and the greenify app does have some limited functionality without root access.
If any of you guys are near PA I have a Java card and can do s-off

I drove seven hours (round trip) to get it done and it was well worth it. I would FedEx it to dottat in a heartbeat and just use a backup phone in the meantime. Who knows when sunshine will be updated.
Well, We are just waiting for them to get sunshine stable with our phones. Until then, Java card is the only way for those on lollipop

In the exact same boat as the original poster...
The last phone I rooted & installed Cyanogenmod on was an S3 & I loved it. The battery became an issue & I moved on to the HCT One M8 from Verizon. I typically wait until the first year of warranty is up before rooting. Well, never again will I wait as all the exploits are patched & Im stuck w/ the stock ROM & I am really missing Cyanogenmod. I live in the Greensburg area of PA, but not sure about driving to York PA for the Java card, though that is extremely nice of the person who offered. I am subscribing to this thread; as I cant find any root methods & look at least several times a week.

I typically wait until I've had the phone 30-40 minutes before rooting and installing TWRP and a custom rom.
Personally, I'd drive to York if I lived where you do. Since I'm 2,250 miles away I'd send the phone. As always, YMMV.
@dottat, I'm in the Finger Lakes area in NY. Where in PA are you? I may have to come and see you!!
Edit: Any chance you have a card for the M9 too?
The card will work for all. Just give him a pm
